I got a second hand FrameWork 13 AMD 7640, and 32GB ram for 900$, and it has been wonderful to have an extremely powerful, forward thinking and modular laptop. For those on a tighter budget, FrameWork offers Factory Seconds of 11th gen Intel laptops, for nearly $600. This doesn't include an SSD or Ram though, but you can get whatever 2 sticks of ram and 1 ssd that suits you, and upgrade later.
The reason why the extra price makes sense, to me, is because they will continue selling upgraded motherboards every year for their 13" and 16" chassis. Currently the 7640 MoBo is $420, and a new Intel Core series is about to be released. Imagine trying to find a new laptop for that amount!! You can even turn the old motherboard into a desktop with their 3dprintable case, so there's no waste at all. I love how it all comes together, and if you're looking for a long term laptop that you can upgrade as you need, I don't see any other laptop manufacturer doing what Framework is doing.

What outstanding choices of channels with whom to collab!! I watch all these channels - each video they put out, regardless of topic. I also love how you put Notebookcheck Reviews, whose channel is quite small but produces A+ content (same with Just Josh, though his is a little bigger). Of course, JT and Moooniizzz are heavy hitters, so everyone knows them, and obviously we all are watching them as well (if you're not, you really need to be; if you want to buy any laptop and JT made a video about that laptop, it is a cardinal sin not to watch his review before buying). Anyway, just thought it was cool of a channel this size to showcase some smaller or medium size channels. Thanks for another great video, HC.

I'd highly recommend looking for good refurbished devices on eBay and Amazon for around $100-$400 as they can often still have modern specifications or some even having a dedicated GPU if you work with blender, photoshop, or using Adobe software. My company refreshed lenovos. So I got a bunch of them, one in particular is an e420 running 24x7 as a "proof of concept that will be replaced with a proper server" for almost 10 years. It has three external USB drives connected to it and runs Windows 10. It gets Rebooted every Wednesday. Ironically when I started to migrate to my new server the new server only lasted 6 months so I never fully got off of the Lenovo.

The T480s I mentioned I had used as a server for a while until I upgraded it, so now its just a device I use for programming and for all my school software. They work really well as servers since you can connect a pretty fast dock to them through that thunderbolt 3 interface on 2017-2019 models and for your e420 it looks like its still got good upgrade options :D. Basic computing needs for students that study law, business, or psychology… hmmm…. As someone that’s studying psych and regularly engages in large cluster analyses, data mining, and physiological data research which uses specialized heavy software… I’d not say psychology has basic computing needs. I started out in easy A classes… but by my senior year, I already knew R and Python. Today as a doctoral student in psychology, I am extremely fluent in R, Python, and MATLAB
I love math and statistics, so I am very happy with my research. But you have no idea how many undergrads try to make a career in psychology thinking they’d never have to do a single math operation in their lives and then are faced with learning R and hate their lives

With a good sale on memory and storage + Linux for your OS, a Framework 13 with the 7840U squeaks just under $1200. By many objective measures, it's worse than the listed laptops, but the subjective quality of upgradability and repairability is still potentially important enough to make the laptop worthy a mention.
Matt's absolutely correct about looking for deals, though, which Framework doesn't really do. For example, in July this year, the 4060 G14 dropped to $1099 while it's normally $1299.

If a MacBook 8gb of ram is plenty unless your doing hardcore video editing or 3d modeling etc. not worth the Apple price to increase to 16gb IMO especially just for a back to school laptop. Even the m1 air is great still for school I feel! Great video though and I luv ur channel.

Aliexpress sells cheap power barel connectors to USB C for different voltages. They work great. I can use my USB power adapters to power older 19 Volt HP barel connector laptops. Up to 100 W without a problem.
And I buy my laptops (Yes I own 4 of them) with a small SSD and replace it with a fast (Samsung 990 Pro for example) 2 TB SSD. The performance of the standard included SSDs is often not great.

The surface with x elite is rly speaking to me. Hope they'l be able do iron down and bring a better app support to arm in 2 years(maybe even bring the price down a bit(my optimal configuration was 2k💀) or at least improove the gpu so i'l be worth the money). I still have 2 years of highschool left and my alr 4yo tuff f15 with i5 10300h and gtx1650ti m is still decent but rly beaten up. Like REALY BEATEN UP.

A 2-in-1 is way superior to a laptop, and beats having to lug around a tablet. I just picked up Lenovo Yoga 7i with a Ryzen 7 8840H, and OLED screen for $1150 direct from Lenovo.

i think that for school you can easily use 8 gigs of ram and less than 256 gigs storage for general needs and classes

No mention of the Lenovo Thinkpad? If on a budget, a used version of that laptop is a great deal. New models in the E series could be a good option too, considering you can personalize it to your liking.

Buy used hardware then. It’s a way to get more for your money. New $500 laptop would suck

Honestly the best "back to school" laptops can be found in your local FB marketplace/Craigslist. There's always someone who buys a new laptop, barely uses it, and wants to get rid of it for much cheaper. This way you also contribute to reducing ewaste.

If they are entering college students they should work for it, go for the laptop rental in the meantime.. Then they will be more careful with it once they buy it. Hopefully laptop rental isn't Intel 2nd gen still...

The only good back to school laptop would have to be the 16 inch Macbook Pro with the M3 max chip, with 48GB unified memory. If you're starting college though, I'd recommend at LEAST 96, and only for extremely basic tasks. Mine arrives in 7 days, hopefully 48GB is enough... i mean i dont usually use more than 1440p on RUclips but we'll have to see...

I have a Acer aspire A6 and bought it for youtube watching and emails....recently had to do 5 x8hr zoom meetings with no other windows open and it kept saying low resources and watching tutor videos, sound was fine but picture was frame stuttering like at 2fps,unwatchable and irritating....i also just with youtube at 480p the cpu is running in 90-100% range,i cannot watch 720p with 48meg connection via wifi with excellent signal....will a dell inspiron 16 5635 improve my all round life here?
