  • With the latest release of Firefox, we now have a native .deb package to install the browser directly from Mozilla without Snaps. Here is a guide on doing just that.

    Yet another video showing that Snaps are not the end all be all. Also I'm glad to see Firefox making a .Deb version for those who need it, & that they are rejecting Snaps, but I'm so glad Manjaro has a native version in the official repos that's installed by default apon distro install, that they don't push Snaps, or Flatpak on people, & don't even have an official option to enable Snaps in Pamac.

    MX Linux does a great job keeping all their browsers and kernels up to date with AHS (Advance Hardware Support) version. 👍

    It's good to see that Mozilla is now pushing .deb's for mainstream users now instead of just the nightly build testers as tarballs always was a pain in the bottom.

    This would be great for Debian as well if it works there, as Debian only ships Firefox ESR which isn't my cup of tea, even though I understand why they ship it.

      Yes, it does work in Debian.

      Well now we do have the option of installing the updated Firefox as a Deb and there is also Waterfox. Which you can also do by adding the repositories. I use Waterfox but I think there still should be a choice.

    so I followed the steps to switch to the deb package and have been pleased with the result and boost in performance. However this morning something in my system made a call to 'snap install Firefox' in the background, without any direction from me. I suspect it was the snap-store / snapd service looking for updates on log-in and going rouge. Got those disabled now, so well see if it happens again, but looks like if you want Firefox deb, you cant use ANY snaps.

    Mozilla also includes information about installing Firefox as a local user and not system wide. Any thoughts regarding installing FF in this manner?

    Snap alone is reason to abandon Ubuntu IMO.

    Why not just use the Mozilla Firefox binary as recommended by both Mozilla and Debian (it also works in other distros)?

    OCD kick every time seeing that Firefox is the only app who's bottom corners are not rounded in Ubuntu.

      there's are several extensions for "rounded corners" , they work pretty good .Give them a shot.

    I do not see the difference between this .deb package of FF and the version supplied via Linux Mint. The FF version of Mint is neither snap or flatpak, so what's the point?

    • @XerographicPaper
      @XerographicPaper 5 месяцев назад +1

      debian users can use it too, which is nice since debian stable only ships the esr version. mixing mint and debian packages is not considered good practice.

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  5 месяцев назад +2

      In Linux Mint, there is not a lot of point in doing this (which is why I did the video on Ubuntu). LM has packaged a deb version of firefox for a while now, so it is pretty moot on that distro, but many downstream of Ubuntu does not have a deb version of firefox.

    Pushing snaps so hard was the sole reason i left ubuntu and now run endeavor and debian instead.

      Well worth it, even for those that believe it's work to install. For me, this is the best and only way to install your software. Otherwise, you are getting pushed towards an Apple/windows type system, locked down with no privacy, choice, freedom. Too many want their Linux to be windows and Mac. Why even switch to Linux, then?

    • @SwitchedtoLinux

      On Ubuntu, that means you will get the snap version. If you are OK with that, go for it!

      This is one reason I moved away from Ubuntu. I love Debian, but got tired of hoops to jump through to install wanted apps. I'm no Arch fanboy, but it's works for me. As long as we're not supporting Microsoft all is good 😊

    Good to know but the snap works perfectly. Deb is an old package whom needs to install dependencies manually...Snaps have problems but Deb too

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  5 месяцев назад +3

      No, this is the new Mozilla packaged deb It is more up to date than the snap, and it updates before the snap

    • @kevinvoiceactor9694

      The snap one still has the "feature" where it expects user home directories to be mounted at /home/. This is an issue at my work because we have NFS mounted directories elsewhere for pseudo roaming profiles.
      Deb version works just fine for our case.

      Elitism
      Everything Canonical does is evil , apparently.
      When they introduced Unity and not GNOME shell they were evil and got years of hate.
      When they retired Unity and switched GNOME shell they were evil and are still getting years of hate because everyone loved Unity. Aside from the fact that Unity is now available and no one uses it.
      It probably stems from some people hated windows and when they switched to Linux they missed hating something.

      Incorrect, both of you. It is because 1.) it is totally forced on people who do not want it, and 2.) it is centralized 3.) The distribution method of installing snaps is proprietary 4.) They are not audited for the code 5.) They are breaking some packages just to have snaps 6.) they are relying on snaps rather than packaging software with the distro.

    • @PaulG.x
      @PaulG.x 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@SwitchedtoLinux It is no more "forced" than rpm and deb packages are "forced" on the users of distros that use them.
      I have switched from snaps for Firefox and Libre Office when I had reason to. When the problems I encountered were corrected in Firefox I switched back to the snap.
