  • I bought this hot dog making machine for £5.50 off of ebay! An absolute bargain.... or was it?! To be honest They normally retail at around £40+ and are tricky to get hold of these days, so this appeared like a bargain!

      Did you have a subpanel or maybe GFCI outlets somewhere between your breaker box and kitchen? The answer should have been to flip a breaker for sure, but I saw the panel you showed was okay.

      Plugging in something that draws enough current to need a 13 A fuse will burn a fuse with a max load of 3 A, it's just a question if it's a fast or slow burning fuse that determines how soon the fuse burns when the current passes that threshold.

      The funniest bit for me is him getting the frying pan out for the onions, when he could have easily used that to heat up the fully cooked hotdogs he bought. Both the Herta and Unearthed are safe to eat straight from the packet. No idea why he thought they were semi-cooked or raw. Flicking matches at the buns would have done a better job of toasting them. I love these videos but it's almost always not about how bad the gadget is, it's about how Barry follows the instructions to the letter, but gets confused by the food.

      @archaon8853 4 года назад +9

      @Lassi Kinnunen yes UK plugs do. But if it pulled more than the fuse is rated for then the fuse should blow rather than trip one of the circuit breakers. A 13A fuse (which is should have installed) is enough for a 2kw fan heater though, so should be plenty for something like this. Possible that the entire circuit was overloaded but more likely some sort of internal fault with the product. Because it only had a 3A fuse in I'd expect that to blow long before a circuit breaker.

      I worked returns at Wal-Mart, and you'd be amazed the lengths ppl go through to get rid of faulty products. Some will buy a new more expensive item, take it home, open the box carefully (like from the bottom), switch the new with the cheaper old, then return it looking unopened. Yes! We have a power board/strip where you can plug 4 things in to one outlet, it has a surge protector on the side. A little red button, but with how old our house is, if you have the microwave on while the kettle is boiling, it flicks off the kitchen fuse in the fusebox 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

      @HKSkansei 4 года назад +5

      Yep.
      Surge protectors stop the thing plugged into it from getting fried if theres a power surge (lighting strike etc)
      If you want to protect yourself from getting fried you want an RCD protected lead/board.
      An RCD cuts power when it detects a short or ground leak, instead of letting the power go through you and doing the whole death thing.

    Thank you for this! I completely enjoy your gadget testing videos. In our house, we can only run 1 plugged in electrical appliance on the circuit at a time, so when we get out the crock pot, electric griddle, blender, etc, it has to go on one side of the kitchen and unplug the coffee maker. if we put any of these on the other side of the kitchen, we have to unplug the toaster to use something else. it's goofy, but it's a learning curve that took us a little while to figure out.

      I've heard that before. I watch a few channels that deal with old electronics and people like to wrap the cord around them and it would indent the hard plastic shell of the electronic overtime.

      I got one of those nice malluable rubber erasers in an art travel kit. I opened it, used it, put it back in the tray and left it for a few months. When I came back it had completely _fused_ with the plastic tray underneath and ruined the whole eraser -_-

  • @xidahs2000
    @xidahs2000 4 года назад

    Problem was when the unit was steaming inside water built up and caused RCD to trip as current was allowed to conduct between live and earth within the unit
    ....plugging it in to another socket on the other RCD ultimately results in the same ....once it partially dried out with lid up no path to earth = no tripping ....nothing to worry about RCDs are super sensitive only problem I see is the buns are obviously meant to be steamed ....nice looking hot dogs though ...love your videos keep up the great work 👍

    Stuff on the cable was probably polystyrene packaging, looked like the previous owner had gone in from the bottom otherwise it'd be in the polybag.
    Hilarious that the first reaction to a loss of power was "what have you done", I've had machines kill my power but the fusebox has the flippy switch ones that trip the circuit instead of needing replaced if a newer house doesn't have those have a word with the electrician.

    • @atari-staffroom
      @atari-staffroom 4 года назад +2

      @@Okurka. Yes they do. But sometimes a surge may not be long enough in duration as to blow the plug fuse. This is one such case (a lawn mower quickly cutting an electrical cable is another where the blade may only cause a short circuit for a fraction of a second) RCDs and MCB circuit breakers react quicker than wire fuses.

    • @dingo137
      @dingo137 3 года назад

      It may or may not trip first. In my experience they'll both go (if we're talking about RCDs).

  • @albinoV
    @albinoV 4 года назад +1

    For it to not trip a 3A fuse, I reckon it's going to be a leakage issue, like some corrosion bridging a live conductor or heating element and the metal casing.

    “It’s killing all the sockets.” That’s why it was £5.50. Whatever happened to the old cookers with an overhead grill? Best cookers they ever made. Back in the 1950s and 60s my mother had a cast iron cooker with metal on/off taps and overhead grill. So did my uncle. He used to leave the oven door open to keep the kitchen warm as toast in the winter. He was an ex army cook. I remember the lovely meals he used to make. Try experimenting with a Churro Maker. It should cook hot dog sausages and other things.
