    Virtual Reality has been lingering in the gaming communities collective mind for decades, but due to limitations in technology, has never been able to reach a mainstream audience. Now, VR is making another run for the limelight, led by the likes of the Oculus Rift, Google Glass, and the proposed Playstation VR. The technology has advanced enough to create stunning virtual worlds, but will it finally be enough to catch on? Let us know what you think the future holds for virtual reality gaming in the comments below!

    I've been thinking recently about Plato's Cave, and how people are trapped seeing shadows until they can leave. The obvious dystopian analogy is that VR will become that cave and we'll forget to step out and can experience the world but I'm more excited about the flip side. Our world is limited by so many laws, but I'm fairly convinced there are so many world that we can convincingly explore that mess with physics at every level.
    Soundself is still one of the coolest VR apps I've seen and I just want to see more of that. MORE!

    Not sure it's going to crack home use mass market yet, but I could easily see it reviving the arcade sector in it's current form, especially the Google 'requires a dedicated room' one (though as something likely closer to the Escape Room model - Rent out a small room for an hour, experiences designed for hour long sessions (either 'one off' or 'that you'll go to about once a week to experience the next episode') rather than the old quarter guzzlers)

    I'd love to see VR used in the classroom. Think of learning history and instead of listening to a boring lecture you are in a virtual world watching historical moments play out.

    Some people think VR is a gimmick that will pass just like how the wii and kinect got old. I don't think that's the case.
    We've always had gimmicks to "immerse" people into a game world, like wii, kinect, and heck, even light guns. The thing I think VR does differently, and why it's more successful than any other gimmick we've seen, is that YOU are actually in it. I think there's a difference between moving around and seeing it translate to a 2d screen, and being inside of the game world, having full control of where you look and are. With VR there's little to no disconnect between you and the virtual world.

    VR now finally has a chance as technology is a) small enough, b) advanced enough and c) affordable for most people in western countries. It all depends now on the gaming industrie to develope games, which make VR interesting and usable.
    So far, there were some nice demos and walking simulators of sort but nothing that really made me invest money in it.

    I grew up in the 90s, and I never gave up hoping that VR would rise again, and now it's finally here! ;D
    I've been following the recent VR community, since Palmer showed up a few years back. Even got the DK1, and DK2, and hopefully my consumer Rift will arrive in a week or so! I can't wait!
    If the amount of preorders Oculus, Vive, and Sony are seeing are any indication, as well as the sheer HUGE number of games coming out on each system at launch and during this year.. Well then VR is going to be HUGE, it's going to take over the gaming industry, and also find it's way into tons of other industries/uses.
    VR is a really powerful technology, and it's not just the evolution of games.. It's the evolution of SCREENS in general, the evolution of our desire to show things, real or fictional, to other people, in a way that totally immerses them.

    Snowcrash by Neil Stephenson was a revolutionary novel that really embodied the idea of virtual reality with its MetaVerse, which was accessed by some using high end goggles. You really should of mentioned this because it inspired a real world software called ActiveWorlds in 1995 and there was even users who had made head mounted monitors for it.

      You know, it would be more possible to believe you if you actually gave examples of awesome VR games. Not that I didn't look through the link you previously provided for Schmelon. The videos shown within that article may appear promising, but I find myself unimpressed. A couple of interesting games and the virtua theatre gimmick is a curious concept. However, I am still not impressed with what people are programming for VR. I don't know, maybe it's because I think AR is more impressive than VR. As a matter of fact, the little bit of AR that was done on 3DS actually surpassed my expectations. Over the years of knowing about VR, even playing a couple VR games, I feel like there's something there that is yet to be tapped into. It could very well be that I was so impressed with AR and the hype around modern VR likely gave me a high expectation that VR simply isn't delivering. Still, I look at it more as the tech not being used to it's fullest. Time will tell if someone manages to tap into VR to do more. Until then, some games won't impress me on a technical level. I say technical because a couple did look interesting when it comes to aspects outside of VR.
      Now, if I come across as condescending, I do apologize. That second paragraph in your response to me did make it hard for me to actually take your post serious. Even if I did take you serious enough to respond with such a lengthy post. Afterall, anyone who simply checks out my playlists, despite how disorganized they are, will see that my gaming interests are far more varied than most people.

      I'll give you that AR is promising, but in general VR will not take off.
      1. People don't want to wear headsets.
      They just don't. I know you've seen lots of reporters doing it, and I'm sure you've tried a rift or something and think it's totally worth the neck ache. It won't sell. A few people will buy it and then when their friends realise how uncomfortable it is, it won't sell.
      2. Depth perception is not a killer app.
      VR (excluding AR) offers nothing over 3D TV or cinema, and that has yet again failed.
      I saw a really great use of VR today. Microsoft's holoportation. Do you know why that won't be a killer app? Because noöne will be able to afford it.
      Lots of companies have put huge bank into 3D cinema/TV and that failed too. Investment does not prove success.

    VR's possibilities are truly limitless. They could really help the realm of meditation and relaxation specially for people with phobias or anxiety. I'm still unsure how future control systems would work as we still need our own limbs to interact with it all. Controlling things with one's brain is still pretty difficult (even in the medical realm where it helps patients with paralysis). But if we could borrow from that, this could help tons of people experience the world very differently from what they know.
    Sorry just on a ramble here. This was a great episode! Thanks! :D

    I think the VR world I'm most excited for is an RPG in the vein of Skyrim (except hopefully better.) The first time I played Skyrim, I was super into it. I felt like I was there, walking around and making my way in a cold land of fantasy and adventure. VR would increase the effect tenfold.

    I absolutely want VR to succeed and want VR myself, but I still think and really fear that this will flop massively, at least for a long while simply because it's too much to ask most people to put a thing like that on their heads and over their eyes for day to day use. No matter HOW awesome it is. A lot of people won't stick with it or start feeling like they don't want to put a headset on. Again, no matter how awesome it actually is and works. Not until it's just about able to be built into their prescription glasses. And AR's probably gonna get their first and maybe work its way towards VR. AR wrap-around transparent OLED glasses perhaps? I bet that could happen.

    This is the moment for sure, my uncle work in the VR world and works with many systems like google glass to help industry. First gamers will be the early adopters, companies can invest in these to improve, and as it becomes cheaper and more consumer friendly people will wear them like they carry a phone. But the applications for these are infinite because your painting a virtual life over a real one, who needs things like a phone or smart watch when its all right in front of your eyes. Why not get rid of screens in general when you have one that can project many things. If we can improve the computation power and graphical capabilities you can do almost anything you want with VR.

    • @QuantumSeanyGlass
      @QuantumSeanyGlass 8 лет назад

      gr33ngunner007 One of the things I was trying to say is that AR really isn't very useful. Yes, it is something you could use in your everyday life, but it is a gimmick. It does not have any new application which older devices are unable to deliver unlike, noticeably, VR. AR is just a new way of presenting data you'd likely be able to see anyway.
      Something I'd like to say. Yes, in the very-very-very long term, I think AR will see more users than VR. If the technology used in it becomes so cheap and ubiquitous and convenient that there's no reason to use a smartphone over AR, then, at that point, AR's unlimited uses will overcome VR's limited uses. However, before then, I don't think AR's adoption will be able to hold a candle to VR.

    • @gr33ngunner007
      @gr33ngunner007 8 лет назад

      VR is mainly for simulating, but AR can put anything in front on you. Why take out your phone and google something when you can just do that in front of your eyes. And you can doing while walking or biking. You can give a presentation with slides to a whole board room without a projector and they can see you while watching. VR is better for games, movies, and simulations. But AR could be the next smart phone except on your eyes.

    • @QuantumSeanyGlass
      @QuantumSeanyGlass 8 лет назад

      gr33ngunner007 You can already walk and use your phone at the same time, but common sense recommends against it: you'll bump into things.
      Like I said, AR is useful, but I challenge you to think of one application where it has a significant advantage over conventional tech.
      In your example, it allowed a presentation without a projector or handsfree googling.
      But wait! With maybe a couple minutes extra prep time, you could use a projector, de-necessitating many expensive headsets.
      Or, in the google example, you could spend 2 seconds pulling out your phone.
      While I'm at it, let me think up some AR things that would be cool. One would, as you said, be videogames where you simply ran around a real life space and played a game. Laser Tag could never be more fun; you could have a fully simulated FPS IRL.
      A AR GPS would also be useful; being able to see the directions on the road in front of you and out in the distance would be far easier than understand than a top-down map view.
      I still do not believe that these applications are sufficiently desirable that VR (which, by the way, is far easier to manufacture) would be outstriped by AR.

  • @nottas
    @nottas 8 лет назад

    The main problem with the current VR coming, is going to be the cost which will limit it's deployment and if it's a rarity then developers will not budget much if anything to giving VR it's full potential. I do not believe it will take off until it' is included in part of a console so that every developer who is looking to develop a game for that console can justify spending the money to really take advantage of it because they will know everyone that owns that console will have it.

    Moving forward I think VR will be slow to pick up due to studios needing the time to develop the language of the art and audiences understanding it. Like the language of cinematography. Though, I feel that not far down the road AR will replace the Smart Phone, and at that point VR will see a total take over in the gaming market.

    Technology has certainly come a long way towards achieving Virtual Reality but the equipment is still essentially "a big screen TV over your eyes" and fundamentally not far off from the original Victorian idea and hardware. We're "looking" at things. I have hopes that there will be a new experience with this new generation of hardware coming this year, but as consumer what I ultimately seek from "VR" is a true neurological takeover, akin to a dream.
    Edit: I predict that first person adventures will be a popular genre for the newer devices. I'm calling Elder Scrolls 7 and Fallout 6 will be "VR" :)

    I'm more worried about there not being enough games that have VR support. The differences in specs for each headset isn't going to help either if they end up needing different requirements in a games compatibility. I really think the issue is going to be game developer support and less technology being able to create a satisfying experience. Will one game work with each headset? From what I've read they won't all work in exactly the same way so it seems game creators will need to make their game compatible with one or with each one individually. If that is the case it will splinter the market and either cause it to fail or cause a monopoly on VR.

    The big problems with VR are: 1) Motion sickness. FPS are unworkable with current technology. 2) Space. Who has 20'x20' for a VR room? 3) Neck injuries. Looking around continuously will cause major injuries. Watch, in 2017 all systems will come with warning stencilled on the headsets. 4) Isolation factor of sitting in a room with a bucket on your head. Yeah, parents are going to love this.

    • @QuantumSeanyGlass
      @QuantumSeanyGlass 8 лет назад

      +Chris Harper 1) Motion sickness is only a problem for a minority of people. Most VR experiences are first person, shooters shouldn't be too much of a stretch.
      2) Not only is that being worked on and only a factor for certain types of VR, but it's not nearly as bad as you think it is. If you had enough room for Wii or Kinect, you'll have enough room for most room-based experiences. 3)"Looking around continuously will cause major injuries"
      Hello?? Have you ever heard of something called "Real Life?" I mean, sure, most of the time you don't have something moderately heavy on your head, but soldiers have, for most of history, ran around for days with far more weight on their head. There's also people who mount GoPros on their head while doing sports, and they don't have any problems either. I don't think this is going to be a problem at all.
      4) Parents already don't like it when you sit in a dark room on your computer all day. You think this is going to be different? At least you might be getting up and moving. Plus, who knows, maybe they'll like it too, and steal time on your device for watching shows. It's been known to happen for other things.

    I think we're pretty close to having true VR, but until I can plug myself in Matrix-style, I don't think it'll be anything more than an expensive gimmick. Plus, as Schmelon said earlier, there's no killer app for VR yet. Those two issues are basically the only barriers to VR left, but they are pretty big barriers. I am sure that I'll have true VR in my lifetime, however, so I'm not too concerned.

    Portal would probably melt some brains. The Myst games if redone with a fully rendered world would be incredible. VR is a change to put people into fantastic and impossible worlds and letting them accomplish impossible feats. Although I think FPS games might become really distasteful. By removing the filter of a screen and controller there might be a chance of violence feeling too real.
    I could imagine a vest that provided force feedback every time your character got shot and in gams as detailed as "The division" or the new CoD games this might give some viewers some bad brain times. I wonder if VR experiences could cause or treat mental illness?

    I think it is the 90s all over again. The tech has improved in that headsets are lighter than before but not much else has really changed. People can try to point to how graphics have improved but that is not really something unique to VR. Graphics have improved across the board. The crappy VR graphics of the 90s were about on par with what you would see in games of the time being mostly polygons with little to no textures.
    So other than it being more portable and cheaper I don't really see how this breakout of VR is going to be much different than the 90s. With it being cheaper it might gain in popularity and be more wide spread than it was in the 90s. I see VR as being a fad just like motion control was. Sure the Nintendo Wii had a ton of console sales but not many studios outside of Nintendo hit it big making motion control oriented games. And even Nintendo with it's current gen console seems to be putting motion control more on the back burner while the others have pretty much abandon it.
    VR is also very exclusive by it's very nature. When playing games with friends you can all watch the screen together and see what is going on even if only one person is playing. With VR only the person with the headset sees what is going on unless there is another screen or the other people are in VR themselves.
    Then there is the medical issue, 3D movies as well as VR create the illusion of 3D by putting the images at slightly different positions in order to trick your brain into seeing 3D. The problem with this illusion though is that it is not how your eyes natural see and focus on things which leads to eye strain and headaches with prolonged use. Also the disconnect with what your eyes are seeing and the other senses are feeling often leads to simulation sickness for many people. Even people with high tolerances often can not go for the same length of time they could with more traditional control schemes.
    These very real medical concerns more than anything are what hold 3D movies and VR back. And making the systems lighter and graphics higher res are not going to help fix that. In fact I've seen studies that they could actually do the opposite as more realistic looking simulations have shown to increase the likely hood of simulation sickness due to the mind being tricked even more so that what they are seeing is real and doesn't match what the other senses are telling it.

    At the very start with the mention of the photography part - creating an illusion in which we can go into, it's like saying we are choosing to reject reality for an illusion and is that not what gaming has been edging closer towards and now with the Oculus Rift this can be achieved on an even grander scale? How is this a positive thing? What if our perceptions of reality, of life, of others, of ourselves where actually the issue and not reality itself?

    • @NintendoThumb

      +The Reality of Gaming Perhaps; but it wouldn't single out gaming any more than hanging out on RUclips, using a computer, staring at TV, a cell phone, or listening to music or podcasts. At least Gaming can be social while it's enjoyed; Where's the outrage for T.V.?
      Or how about the telephone? Every time you make a call you're rejecting your current reality to join a shared reality with someone else somewhere with the same device. It's funny but I don't see very many people opposed to those, though, they serve a similar function as what VR and online community's have and will become with this tech.

    As I see it, VR is still stuck in the 90's because many still hold a very limited view on how VR works. Not saying third person perspective games and similar won't work, seeing how there are possibilities for those to function in VR. It's more to do with the fact that we tend to have a limited understanding of how to apply the unique aspects that are needed to make VR immersive.
    My view comes largely from how little practical use, when it comes to gaming, was applied when it comes to peripherals like the Wiimote and Kinect. Not to say all of it is bad, seeing how even the motion controls of Sony's sixaxis controller made games like Folklore feel natural. Just that far too often the games are either unresponsive or gimmicky. Until we can improve upon the tech that functions best with VR, VR will continue to feel more like a gimmick than a form of tech.

    Game engines are all ready for it, but the hardware isn't there quite yet, too expensive to be a major success.
    However, the tools are there for people in the game industry to experiment, which will be key in a few years, since the games will be ready when the price will be affordable for everyone.
    That's why for now, it probably will be a tool for engineers, or for architects. it provides a great visualization potential and for instance Epic Games knows it since it is opening itself to architectural visualization, and VR is the best argument to go use that instead of a traditional rendering software. In addition to that, a professional use is more easily worth the price.
    It also has some nice potential in the medical field, to cure phobias for example.
    All in all, it is perfect as is for professional use, while quite not enough mature for mass usage.
    Indeed, there are some exciting things which are more imminently doable for everyone, which will probably cast a shadow on VR for now.

    I think a completely different style of games will need to be made and if there are any action games I think players will need to be eased in the action over the straight into the action style of games. I'm pretty sure you can get PTSD from a realistic FPS but if a game was more like the levels of basic training I'm pretty sure it would be fine. I mean, players may become combat ready and personally I would love to relive the times in basic training and I yes I do mean screaming Drill Sargent and lots of push ups before you are even given a weapon.

    Without controls to match, VR is set for another 90's style flop. Sure the headset and graphics may be great but if I have to interact with the world using a controller it's not true VR right? When we have the tech to recreate something like OASIS from Ready Player One is when VR will really take off.

      inceptional Um no. Try looking up what Augmented Reality ACTUALLY is as well as what Heads Up Displays are. These are two different things.

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 8 лет назад

      ***** Augmented reality is basically projecting fake computer stuff over the real world-it's that simple. Google Glass, Hololens, the 3DS using it's twin cameras to project 3D objects over the real world, Magic Leap: They are all variations augmented reality.
      Heads Up Displays are simply how you display various digital information in front of your face. A jet can have a HUD on it's windshield, a video game can have a HUD on the screen, an augmented reality device can have a HUD, and even virtual reality can display HUDs.
      Google Glass, Hololens, are both augmented reality devices capable of showing HUDs; they are basically the same idea done slightly differently.
      What he is describing at that part of this video is a head mounted display; which is exactly a VR headset (a head mounted display). AR headsets are (usually) also head mounted displays.

    I think that we have one more period of VR going dormant before we get real Virtual reality somewhere in the 2030-2040s, most likely we will hit a wall now in having anything beyond a visual experience until we get a breakthrough in human to computer interfaces, whether that be large immersion pods, brain spikes, or something totally different I have no idea, but we don't have the technology for anything beyond novel just yet.

    wow man, that is so well researched. If you just doesn't look at the professional side of VR. So just ignoring about 90% of the history of VR, just looking away of the fact that VR is already in use in engineering for quite some time. I mean of course if you look it that way Oculus Rift is pretty impressing. But knowing all these facts and more Oculus Rift is not that impressiv. It is just a fucking powerglove, or better to say it was. Instead of paying tons of money it made VR pretty much available for the average person, that is when you consider it at the original price of 300 bucks. Now it cost 800 Bucks and it is far from what it needs to be. Maybe it would be crapyier but you don't make a market if people are not buying. And Considering that it wouldn't be as cheaply made as the powerglove (making a 7000USD instrument into a 30 buck toy) it could change gaming.
    So all in all, do your research man!.

Just fancy-ness of observing environment of virutal reality may save it to the point where people would buy it anyway.
