    I'm torn on this. On one hand I've been using 11" Airs since 2011 and have been waiting for a Retina model for a while but this just doesn't cut it for me.
    It's absolutely a sexy laptop but I do work on my Air all the time like video editing, Photoshop and capturing video. Having to carry around a USB-C adapter and USB hub just to have two USB ports to plug in a card reader and scratch drive defeats the purpose of a thin laptop for me. The Core M is a killer fanless CPU but it's still a downgrade in power from the current Air.
    I REALLY wanted to like this but it's just not for me. Time to move to the 13" MacBook Pro.

      Having 2 or at least one USB 3.0 port(s) would have made it tough to ignore but for now it'll end up more bulky with those attachments.
      The second generation will be the one to watch out for if they manage to add the USB ports. Its quite obvious that it'll be more powerful anyway!

    • @its.n1k
      @its.n1k 9 лет назад +4

      ***** if all Storage media came with USB C ports, adding USB C Ports would be the thing to do. What I'm saying is they should just add a port or two and make it more convenient to use. Using adapters to use adapters is just outright crazy!

      What they should have done is make it a touchscreen with a detachable keyboard (like the Microsoft surface) have it run iOS when I'm tablet mode and Mac OS when docked. Dubbed the iPad pro .. And the just add retina to the MBA line

      Great video! You definitely persuaded me into not jumping the gun and buying one of these. It looks so sexy, but the performance, USB C port, and crappy camera aren't worth it for me. Do you ever sell your old macbook pros whenever you upgrade? I bought a 2009 Macbook Pro on Craigslist and it's been doing well but I feel like it's time to upgrade. I don't know if I'd be willing to shell out full retail price on a new Pro, how much do you think a used 2014 model should run for online? I'm so out of the loop. Lol

    Everything you need to know right here! I'm torn on this one, for the most part it does what I need a laptop to do, but it's an expensive fashion accessory when you can get a 13" MBPr for around the same price. Or you could just rock an iPad Air with a keyboard....which gets you a touchscreen and a 720p camera ;)

    I wish people would stop complaining about the MacBook only having one port. For the people that this is designed for it doesn't matter. The average consumer doesn't have a use for external drives and monitors, but if they do, there are a range of wireless alternatives available that do the job perfectly for their occasional use (iCloud, AirDrop, Airplay) . If you're like me and need to use monitors, endless peripherals and accessories to get shit done; this machine obviously isn't for you. Get a MacBook Pro. But I mean seriously, I don't think I've used a memory stick since 2010.
    Putting my mini rant aside, great video as always Jon.

    • @EpicSeedz
      @EpicSeedz 9 лет назад

      What if you wanted to plug in an apple mouse and charge it at the same time? You can't. The one port is a bloody stupid idea.

    • @willosaurr
      @willosaurr 9 лет назад +2

      EpicSeedz I don't see that as being a big issue considering most people have wireless mice now. The only people I see hanging onto their wired peripherals are gamers, and we all know Macs aren't exactly known for their gaming community.
      I see your point however. Right now we are still very much wired in; not having the ability to plug in two things at once will be a hassle. But this will just make people more interested in the possibilities of the cloud and wireless alternatives, which looking at the way Apple are marketing this is exactly what they have in mind. Lots of people seem to think they're trying to make you buy their overpriced adapters, but really I think they're trying to force you into subscribing to iCloud. It's certainly the smarter business move in the long run.

      Saw it, but not sure I like the concept of sacrificing Changer, USB ports,
      general mouse, or just about anything, just to get a slim laptop or
      notebook and it still costs like an arm or a leg. But we're really not the
      target audience so can't say much. Love the display though.

      @vaibhavawasthy8770 9 лет назад

      Yeah plus we need audio and video editing from time to time. It won't be able to handle that, the cost is the biggest con, but still after saying all that I would love to have that display. It's a real shame that the didn't considered an average consumer's budget while making this.

    What I never understand is why people like to talk so much about products they do not like and will not buy. I would never waste my time to write comments about products I dislike and I always have the feeling that those people have to convince themselves that the products they bought are actually better. What the hell, if those people have nothing else to do and no valuable time to spend they have the right to waste their time...
    - I waited for the 12" for quite a while. I was always torn between the Air 11" and 13". Now this is the perfect middle ground. I always liked light Laptops so this is around the weight of the iPad 1 and that is great.
    - The keyboard looks quite good and it is nice to type on the same size as on my iMac
    - I will miss the MagSafe and I wonder why the kicked this great thing. Maybe it is too light to be easily pulled of? Still this a minus.
    - I use my Air just when I am outside of my office. I use a program that is not available for iOS so I need a laptop. I also think that a keyboard and a mouse are needed for excel sheets with complicated formulas so using an iPad is no alternative. The only external things that I really use on my Laptop are USB for charging my iPhone or for syncing my Nike SportWatch (Those days are soon over...). So I really do not need more ports.
    - The cam is the second little minus but I never use it anyway. When I am in a hotel or on the road I only use Factime with the iPhone or the iPad.
    Yes in terms of Laptop Power I am a light user and this Laptop seems pretty perfect for me.

    you guys realize that adapters can either be thought of as pluging into your pc to make it annoying or plugging into your current mouse or what ever your plugging it into and extending that current length meaning its not the macbook thats getting bulkier but the actual mouse or the actual screen cord or what ever it is you need plugged.

  • @fatmike371
    @fatmike371 9 лет назад +52

    The Macbook is such a down grade... The Macbook Air easily out performs the Macbook and the Air gives you those Ports back and the glowing Apple logo. I see no reason to buy this other than the Retina screen and color choices but you can always just buy a black case protector for the air and an external screen.

    • @MeisterYodarkus
      @MeisterYodarkus 9 лет назад +8

      Probably the only reason would be portability, but the Air is really great at that already. Or maybe no noise due to the fanless design, but that is only an issue for very few people.
      I see the MacBook more as a design study to show what is possible in thinness and weight. Exept for the single port which is a hassle for many people this machine will be awesome in a couple of years once fanless CPUs get faster.

    • @fatmike371
      @fatmike371 9 лет назад +2

      MeisterYodarkus I think Apple just went that unnecessary route of what they could do with tech now a days... In my opinion it's too early for something this crazy and thin.

    • @MeisterYodarkus
      @MeisterYodarkus 9 лет назад +4

      fatmike371 It maybe is a bit too early. As it maybe was the first Macbook Air. It was slow, had only few ports and it was super expensive.
      Look at the Macbook Air today. It is fairly priced (for a Mac), has enough ports for most people and is fast enough. I am really looking forward to seeing what comes in the next couple of years from laptops like this.

      There's no downgrading. It's a completely new product line. Although it does seem to be more futureproof than many think. Everyone went crazy when Apple took out the CD-ROM from their laptops but now most other companies have followed in their footsteps. It's going to be the same thing with ports. People use cloud storage and wireless sharing already, why not make the inevitable come sooner? The Air is still there for those living in today's world, but the MacBook definitely looks at computing a good 5 years in the future.

    Great Channel Jonathan! Just found it because of your "12-Inch Macbook" video.
    This Macbook can't get to the store fast enough for me. Both my home and office have all the computing fully covered. Its in between home and office that have always been frustrated me. First I had a Macbook Air. Nice, but no retina. Then got a 15" Macbook Pro. Loved it, but just too big. Then got the iPad Air, but just could not really do my work on it. I think this new 12" Macbook should be great for using in the hotel, on the plane, and everywhere in between. Small size, sharp screen, and full X OS. My needs are: email, excel, web, music, and watching movies.
    For me this was the product Apple was missing.
    Question(s): What are those white speakers that you use with your 5k iMac? Do they come with those stands?
    Many thanks!

    The new macbook is an option. They have other computers with ports etc. I just don't get why someone would want a laptop for its "portability" and "lightness" and be upset that it has one port to rule them all. My idea is that the dongle is useful when the need arises, but gets out of the way most of the time. This is, for me anyway, what a laptop should be, especially in this day and age of cloud computing. I tend to like things simplified. On a further note, I would rather have one dongle with multiple connections in one location than multiple wires and plugs sprawled out from both sides of my computer. That's just my honest opinion though. YMMV.

    The Yoga 2 is the same price and carries the same processor. You also have the Surface Pro 3 that sits around the same price point. While I understand that It also has a touch screen , it restricts or limits you on how or rather where you can use it ,because of the kick stand. It would have to be used on a flat surface. The Google Pixel is the same price also , and while it has 2 USB-C ports , it's a Chromebook that's bigger thicker and heavier.

    Under power, over priced.... Mobile processor? No USB? No SD card reader? Ok am i seeing this wrong; if this device is meant to be portable, yet you need silly dongles to do anything productive. Dont we have Tablets for Portable media? Or phablets and even regular phones for this kind of stuff? Its like they made a $1300 Netbook with a fully (and even still) under powered processor.... like my Oneplus One has better CPU specs and that things a phone and to top it off it only cost me $350..
    Would i consider buying this device ever, or devices like it in the future... No Never. Ill stick with my 2015 xps 13 thank you very much.

      Mr Mike Most importantly, the new Dells have Windows 8, which is what I have been suffering through for over a year now, and is why I am switching to a Mac. One of the best selling points for Macs, at least for me, is that it's NOT a Windows machine. Microsoft has probably sold more Macs than Apple's advertising has.

      I never said I didn't know how to run it. I said I don't like it. Big difference. Windows 8 is crap. That is my educated opinion. You disagree. Fine. Use it. Enjoy it. But don't assume that those of us who dislike it just don't know how to use it. Some of us know how to use it very well and STILL hate it.

    Hey everyone! Apple just dropped the new MacBook, and it broke :( . But now it's .0001 of a nanometer thick! And we raised the price to $3000, and we didn't change the specs at all. You know you want one, so come on to Apple.com so you can get yours. Oh and we have a new deal, buy 2 MacBooks and get an apple with a huge bite mark in it!

    Why they didn't just redesign the Macbook Air to look like this I will never know. And they gave us a 480p camera so that next year they can come up with a "brand new 720p" camera and have another feature. They cripple the features on purpose just like all their products.

    I come from an 11inch air i7 macbook air with 256 ssd and I actually really like this new macbook. it represents everything I want from a laptop. Sure the speed could be better and more ports as well as price but I like it enough to keep it over my air and thats coming from an 11 inch i7 variant this says alot.
    I can still game on the new macbook on low to medium based on the testing on did on my channel and I can still video edit/render. so than whats the problem. a hub may be an extra device that attached to my wired mouse but I still don't mind enough,
    this new macbook represents a different slice/market of individuals that demand there laptops to be "nicer" with premium features and thats something I really like.
    How ever Next years model needs more performance Or I will not keep it.

  • @texal

    I think they might drop the Air line and go back to just MacBook and MacBook Pro. Also have they shown the power adapter for the new 12" would be so nice if they included a usb-c port on it so you can charge and use a usb drive but they probably won't.

    This is a total consumer based laptop for the ecosystem where all the user's principal photography and video is done with an iPhone, with heavy reliance on iCloud and iCloud Drive, thus, hardly any real i/o on this device, if you are trying to get along with just the charge cable and not a lot of adapters. I would have to go with the Macbook Air in order to have an essential SD card slot for my non-iPhone photography.

    Not having a separate power connection is a real downer. You're forced to run on battery whether you like it or not, especially when you connect things to do that needs power. Bad idea. I power connection on the right side and a USB-C on the left side is how you do it. That's big deal that makes the decision for me.

    It's really impractical, but it's sooo sexy though! That MacBook in spack grey looks absolutely heavenly! It's a shame it's a downgrade in terms of performance and practicality. They needed to slowly introduce type C and atleast keep 1 usb 3.0 port with it if nothing else.

    I'm not really digging the new Macbook yet. Personally, I think the 13" Air and retina Pro are much better options for the price. Both are way more powerful, and more versatile with the amount of ports there are. That being said, I think the Macbook is pretty cool, but I think it will take a few generations to take off, just like the Air.

    My around five year old laptop has a better processor than this thing, and probably the same quality webcam, and I only paid around six hundred when I got it. He didn't mention if the drive is SSD, but I'm assuming so, mine came with a 500GB non-SSD but that hasn't been an issue for me, I did recently upgrade it to a 1TB drive just because I was running out of space to store my files.
