Great review and comparison! Definitely some compelling real life photos from the Samyang.
Still using Zeiss Batis 85mm who is stabilized
The earlier version is also weather sealed and has less joints needing seals.
Hi Matthew. Maybe (I can't really open the lens and test the inside sealings), however, this is the way the innovations of the MKII are mentioned on the Samyang website so we mentioned that in the review.
Sigma surprisingly sharper than expensive Sony GM at 1.4 4:53
The Sony is a very old design. We expect it to be replaced this year (not sure if this will be 1.2 or 1.4 or both at some point). The Sigma is a great lens (we own it), although its corner sharpness is not amazing. The AF, however, is top-notch - basically Sony-level AF (85mm 1.4 lenses in general are not amazing AF performers but it is as good as it gets).

Sony claims the GM has Linear Response Manual Focus.
In our testing, it was much better than the two others in this respect but not truly linear (and if it's not 100% Linear then it's not Linear at all in my view - you can either repeat a pull or not). This is unless of course there is some hidden camera setting I am not aware of that changes the lens to fully Linear (I talked to Sony about that in the past - not specifically about this lens but more in general). I would assume the next one will be 100% Linear, but we will see.

@@LensVid this is one of the best reviews I have seen so far of the these lenses comparison, thank you for that. I am strugglying in deciding on these lenses based on two factors, linear focus and breathing. I wonder how bad is the breathing of the sigma and samyang in terms of usability in the real world application for video creation and also in terms of controling focus for some slow pulls, or moderate speed, is it still doable fairly well? What do you think?
@@alexanderkubak6029 I am not much of a focus puller so its hard for me to comment on that. All 3 lenses have a lot of breathing - I guess its this focal length...

This felt very biased against the Samyang.
I can't comment on other people's "feelings". This review is based on our tests and those alone as we always do. If you have any specific issue with any one of the tests feel free to share them.
@@LensVid I felt like I'm general you understated when the Samyang dis better, but overvalued when the other lenses did better. Tone of your voice, and choice of words. Seems very biased and for that reason unprofessional.

Sort of agree with this comment. While it might be based on tests, it's still seems biased against Samyang.
