Hey James, funny how things work out, but thought I would share, but I know this car is probably scrap now, but if the reason was, even after replacing the the rear main seal was still leaking after replacement, there is also a 3rd place it leaks from, which again is an engine out job. But it can leak from the gear box side on the 'alloy cradle' aka crank base plate (which holds crank. So if you to do the engine in order of layers working down it goes cylinder head } head gasket }engine block } sealant } CRANK BASE PLATE } sealant } lastly sump. It leaks on the sealant in top of the base plate, exactly on that corner which would have been easy to see once the gearbox is seperated. You may have known this but I literally found this out a few days ago from a guy who restorers Vauxhall Corsa C and D for a retirement living. Just thought I would share if it was.something that had your head scratching. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I really like these videos. I've never owned a Vauxhall, never want to own a Vauxhall, not my cuppa tea at all. But, the dedication to what the majority of people see as "just a Corsa" is quite something, and it gets a big thumbs up from Me. Enjoy the content, great to chill out to. Hope your channel grows even bigger dude.
Bravo sir, Bravo. I watched this series and even though some would have given up, you persisted and fixed it. And your fixes were not the easy ones either. Thumbs Up!
Loved the vids, please do more. As a fellow driveway mechanic, I felt your pain when you found that coolant leak at the end- you handled better than I would have🤬- I’ve been there!!!!!
The car might not be worth it most people say. But if everybody put the same effort into repairing a car like that and keeping it running the positive impact on the environment would be immense
Congrats on fixing the oil leak. I expected it to be an engine out job. I've done an engine swap on a Corsa C so I know what's involved. How did you get the clutch aligned with so little room?
cheers mate, i did it by eye, you can see around the outside of the friction plate i just made the gap even.. hard to explain but can be done :) cheers
For future reference, I wouldn't make a habit of using that pin for counter torque when undoing or doing up flywheel bolts, the crankshaft socket/cut out for it could easily be damaged. It is a metal cut out in one of the counter weights and all it would take to fail is a small tab of metal to break off. Better to use a flywheel locking tool. It's great to see that you can do this job just by cracking he bell housing open like that. Incidentally, you might not have had room to remove the engine without removing the timing gear and housing.
Whenever I do a gasket like that, I always put a (very thin) coat of instant gasket on both sides of the gasket. I find it just helps with sealing. Great video - thanks and keep it up!
Ugh. This brings up memories of GM 8 valve engines and their perennially leaking cam cover gaskets. But at least they were dead easy to get at! Put my spanners down a long time ago now, good work on the oil seal 👍
the part u was pointing to for the coolant leak was the egr valve housing but on some 1.2 engines the egr wasn't installed but the housing is that but so to find the gasket you'll prob need to search egr valve gasket
Well done! It takes guts to do something you are not absolutely confident about! I did my Corsa's Timing chain and gasket myself without a Haynes manual just vids on RUclips. The oil and water were mixing and resulting in milkshake oil! I saved myself an absolute fortune in labour costs and was chuffed as nuts when i realised it solved the problem. Keep up the great channel content. Good on YOU!
Glad you sorted it out, just subscribed as I have been watching your great vids on the TV and couldn't sign in on the box. Keep the cracking work up. So nice to see every day cars being worked on and kept alive. Your Dad's trike is interesting. Look forward to seeing more on that as it progresses.
Glad, you fixed it. Proud owner of a corsa aswel. This just goes to show you that if you're willing to put the effort in, everything will work out in the end. Really nice content mate. Keep it up.
Thank you The Savage Garage! So far I've learn many things (including this one with oil gasket) about my Corsa C from your videos.👍 If you have time can you make a another video tutorial🎬🎥 of changing a gearbox oil on this model of Corsa C?☺
Good job mate! Glad you didn't give up.. I also have been in your situation with mine( 2002 combo in australia). Fixed one thing and something else came up! Parts over here are really expensive! Good show mate. Well done :)
You should get yourself some red hilomar. The practice of sealer gasket sealer is well used in the industry, I use this method sometimes but try avoid using silicon sealer, it oozes where you don’t want it and after time goes hard, cracks them leaks where as the hilomar never actually sets, it’s oil resistant so not affected and not bothered by heat
Watched this already and saw something but forgot to post a comment. While you're at it, replace the flexi. There's some slight damage on it. The car will go quieter and you'll claw some fuel economy back too. Just did mine and it's dead quiet. Kinda miss the grunt though.
If you can slacken the subframe bolts of do so, but leave the drivers rear corner bolt in, allows the subframe to dropped enough to move the gearbox out and then you can removed the gearbox mount of and move it further into the passenger wheel well, Not sure if you have one, the clutch alignment tools you can get of ebay for under a tenner are not bad for tight spaces (The ones made of plastic)
Well done on fixing that problem,i wouldn't where to start on the clutch flywheel part,so tight in that engine bay its unreal, another leak has now appeared, what a pain.alot easier for sure LOL.
Well done getting that fixed out of interest I think I may have the same problem with my Kangoo nowhere near as bad as yours but every now and then I get a shudder on the clutch which leads you to think of the rear main seal. Renault say too use a special tool to install the seal is Vauxhall the same?? Love the channel thanks so much for all the stuff you do I can well imagine its not easy to film and do the work.
Mate ure a Legend. I bought a Holden Barina xc/Opel Corsa C (Rebadged) in Aus at Auction with 100,000ks for $300 its never missed a beat BUT i have an oil leak the same. Changed oil filter gasket but still got oil under gearbox. Great video may need it.
The thing to note about the new seal was it was brown, usually indicative of it being a VITON seal, viton is such a vastly superior material and you can get viton sizes in most seal sizes, which like bearings are sized inner-outer-width. Allseals in Norwich is your friend, good video though
Guessing this is a rubber seal and not a ptfe seal? Having major problems with mine, weathers not helping as the seal and getting stiff and hard before installation. Any advice would be great thanks
Had this problem with 2 different Corsa C's, both times turned out to be the Oil Filter housing, nice to see this though, I was sure I could get the clutch out like that but was told it was impossible!
I had the same problem with the sump: brand new gasket, scratch free engine block and sump and, still, leaking. I did the same that you did to solve the problem and, of course, it was solved.
Well done James You're certainly a talented lad glad this job didn't give you too much trouble, it was a good sight seeing no oil leak after!, And despite what some others have said the hat's proper decent really suits you mate 👍
Excellent work on the oil leak. Can you tell me what the coolant problem turned out to be? I have a corsa C with a similar problem and had the gasket changed by the egr mount like you suggested but didn't fix the problem. Could it be the egr valve mount itself?
Well done James, that tea & choccie biccies always a good idea. Glad you didn't give up on it. Great vid, great content. You still selling the Corsa when it gets M.O.T'd? Is the 1.8 legal yet? Looking forward to many more videos. Keep up the good work.
Fair play I’m surprise you managed to get this done the way you did, for frustrations sake I’d just have dropped the subframe and took the gearbox right out.
Good work. My mk5 Astra is going in the garage next week for the same work. 450 quid but thatll include a new clutch to be on the safe side. Its certainly not something id even think about attempting to do myself
Nice job...your a natural mate. Can I ask what method you used to center the clutch plate. If you did want to take the box out completely what would be the best way. Would it be remover the sub frame complete and leave the engine slung on an engine crane or what.
Well done chap. Once you have done a few of these you can do this job in 2 hours. Only ever dropped tge subframe on these when having to replace the gearbox (when they run dry) common problem as you well know.
Very well done James you persevered and overcome the problem. Shows your good character! The cups of tea helped i think...keep up the good work mate. And please say that your atleast thinking about changing mot garage?? Haha cheers mate
great stuff. but one thing that really worries me. You put that bead of silicone around the oil pan, which if fine. But you didn't put it around the area the Oil-Pickup seals!! that OEM gasket is going to be less squished around the outside (where the pickup is half-sealed against), and eventually that seal will fail and you will loose oil pressure!! i would highly recommend taking that sump off again and re-siliconing the entire sealing area! dont want to trash an engine because of that!
think it's amazing the people talking about a hat or should of done it different is a joke if you can do it better get your own videos this lad does great work he didn't say everything he does it by the book and you should do it all his way this is basically a how he managed to get it done and a showing what it intales to get it done great video mate I enjoy watching every time one go's up and looking forward to more astra content
Completely agree kind of sad how when they aren't pulling his work apart they start on what he's wearing. He's a great guy and i personally think he dresses well the hats cool too it suits him i think 👍
Hi I have a oil leak somewhere between the oil filter housing and the egr valve, must I change the oil filter one first? On Corsa C 1.2..does egr valve housing not hold any oil?
Mate . Love the videos just watched this .. I had a Astra gtc 1.6 turbo in 2012 had it a year it had exactly the same oil and coolant leaks from the same places after a year the dealers tried to sort it out under warranty. But just made it worse... so sold the bloody thing.. Vauxhall are still turning car out with the same defects...
hey, when you say "up to temp" its only around 80 degrees? my 2 old corsas use to sit on 90 but the current one i have sits the same temp as yours but heating is shocking thermostat or clear heater matrix?
My old cavalier had a similar issue after many sump gaskets it turned out it was play in the fly wheel causing it to rub on the edge of the gasket and splitting it.
I have alot of oil residue on top of the Bell housing, I've been told it's the gear linkage shaft seal which goes into the transmission on the top. Have you had this problem and is it easy to fix?
if you take the bumper off and the mudguard and jack a little higher you will be able to take the gearbox out at an angle it just makes it a bit easier when doing clutch, flywheel, and slave cylinder jobs😀.
I'm no car expert but as a water pump mechanic, often putting those many layers of sealing on a joint like you did on the carter usually ended up in oil leaks, but hey, no expert
funny how this video is so relevant to me 5 years on. I could see its not really easy indeed the first time. where are you ? can we please do mine i have the same leaks as those..corsa c 1.2
Ive just had a rear main seal, new clutch, in my 1700 cosa diesel, the one with the isuzu engine, why the frick does it get gear chatter now intermittently in neutral.
How did you center the clutch? I need to change mine soon and was hoping to do it like you and move aside the gearbox... A clutch alignment tool doesn't look like it will fit? Did you use a deep socket to align it?
You have done a very good job fixing the oil leak, you should believe in your own ability a bit more as you have done a good job on what was a very annoying and difficult fix. I bet you are pleased that you didn't scrap it now cheers Malcolm
Probably my favourite channel right now. We need to see more of your dads Mondeo. 🙂
nice Cap!
cudos for sticking with it my man!

Like the grandad cap
Taylor Haddock this guy is a serious fashion victim he does wrenching in pink trainers or in this vid, pink lounge slipper.
Looks like a victorian chimney sweeper
I love IT too
And i assume you do your car work in gucci flip flops holding your louis vitton handbag? get over it
He’s just walked his pointer and rounded up the sheep in the lower field and shot a pheasant after mucking out his horses didn’t you know...

@@TheSavageGarage could you do the clutch slave cylinder like this?
You usaly remove the gear box to do the crankshaft oil seal its just a lot easier like you showed us
You can't remove the gearbox without removing the whole subframe...

Have this leak on my Astra G since I bought it and still have it 5 years later ! Amazing the oil does not effect the clutch
Glad, you fixed it. Proud owner of a corsa aswel. This just goes to show you that if you're willing to put the effort in, everything will work out in the end. Really nice content mate. Keep it up.
I would of changed that clutch whilst the gearbox was out, it looked pretty worn and close to the rivets for my liking

You still selling the Corsa when it gets M.O.T'd?

Looking forward to many more videos.
Keep up the good work.
Great job. Its a typical Vauxhall always giving bother!
I love how positive you are. I would’ve given up by now. Is that a slight Norfolk twang by any chance?
Well done mate. You have the patience of a saint. I’d have had it scrapped by now.
haha its people like me which is why you see 60's cars still alive! Never surrender
Good to see your work sure this will help a lot of folk.
Fair play I’m surprise you managed to get this done the way you did, for frustrations sake I’d just have dropped the subframe and took the gearbox right out.
Glad you sort things out. Great come back.. Now what, mot and sale? Cheers..
I sold my Corsa c for this exactly reason, I wouldn't know where to start when it comes to replacing the rear crank seal. Good work :)
Ash Bryant how much did you sell it for ??? I’ve got the exact same leak but I don’t know how to fix it 😂
Good work. My mk5 Astra is going in the garage next week for the same work. 450 quid but thatll include a new clutch to be on the safe side. Its certainly not something id even think about attempting to do myself

Nice work mate
Great vid! Question what is that rubber grommet for the flywheel inspection actually called please?
Well done James nice work , reading through some comments on here some of these sofa mechanics make me laugh , they haven’t a clue
Thank you for all your vauxhall corsa c videos you have really help me doing mine car bro
Do you think I'd have enough space to change the slave cylinder from that angle?
Well done chap. Once you have done a few of these you can do this job in 2 hours. Only ever dropped tge subframe on these when having to replace the gearbox (when they run dry) common problem as you well know.
Is there a gasket between the oil filter housing and the engine? .i think my car is leaking from there
that's a hell of a job to do on the driveway! well done :-)
you absolute hero! cheers for sharing this, now that i've seen you do this, i will have a go
Think ur leaking money with that corsa 😭🤔
Well done. I have an Astra Mk4 too so interested to see new content on that. Nice way of explaining what you do also. Keep up the good work
Love the sofa spoiler!
Very well done James you persevered and overcome the problem. Shows your good character! The cups of tea helped i think...keep up the good work mate. And please say that your atleast thinking about changing mot garage?? Haha cheers mate
Does this mean I can change the clutch in my same Corsa without dropping the subframe?
Dude, awesome video. Content is really good atm. Wear what you want! Love the hat. Fuck the haters. Keep up the good work 👍👍
great stuff. but one thing that really worries me.

Awesome mate... Hate the UK weather!! Definitely inspiring videos.

Just one question, where is the PCV Valve?
Well done, you didnt give up.
is the seal for the pulley side the same as the transmission side?
Hi I have a oil leak somewhere between the oil filter housing and the egr valve, must I change the oil filter one first? On Corsa C 1.2..does egr valve housing not hold any oil?
Using all that silicone is a sure way of causing sump oil leaks and never oil up the outside edge of a rear oil seal.
Mate . Love the videos just watched this .. I know it's been a long time since you've uploaded this video but is there any chance you would still have a link for the timing tool kit please?
tks
Thank you for the video James and another good job well done, you where lucky in aligning the clutch plate with the flywheel!!! LUCK or SKILL. 😎👍🇬🇧
hey, when you say "up to temp" its only around 80 degrees? my 2 old corsas use to sit on 90 but the current one i have sits the same temp as yours but heating is shocking
thermostat or clear heater matrix?
Well done, fingers crossed it stays ok...Fred.
Was there any locating pins when you put clutch onto flywheel ?
My old cavalier had a similar issue after many sump gaskets it turned out it was play in the fly wheel causing it to rub on the edge of the gasket and splitting it.
Any chance you could link your trolley jack? Im looking for a decent one but not sure which one to choose. Thanks
I have alot of oil residue on top of the Bell housing, I've been told it's the gear linkage shaft seal which goes into the transmission on the top. Have you had this problem and is it easy to fix?

Sorted! Shame about the coolant leak, think your Corsa likes winding you up!!
Ive just had a rear main seal, new clutch, in my 1700 cosa diesel, the one with the isuzu engine, why the frick does it get gear chatter now intermittently in neutral.
Nice one savage garage. Keep up the good work mate
How did you manage to alignment the clutch in that space
How did you center the clutch? I need to change mine soon and was hoping to do it like you and move aside the gearbox... A clutch alignment tool doesn't look like it will fit?
Did you use a deep socket to align it?
S I did it completely by eye, it can be done without a tool
great job man ! cheers from Brazil !

any ideas how to get that rubber cap for the inspection hole in the bell housing? Looked everywhere and cannot find one. Thanks
Plese god tell me you put locktight on the flywheel bolts/ or better replaced them.
obviously :D
the sxi deserves to pass the mot , corsas are the best
Did you put a new clutch plate in? Just because you have it out anyway.
