There are far too many extreme angles, with wide corners with a limited approach. These are exceptional horses, keen and wanting to gallop on. Cross country shouldn't be set up to catch them out, it's not fair on honest horses doing their best. And it's dangerous. Time for a rethink with cross country course design.
It’s become more of a maneuverability and coordination test than a long distance fitness test. Leave the fancy footwork and crazy combinations for showjumping…..
Aren’t the combinations & tricky lines how they increase the difficulty though? As I understand, back in the day when lots of horses were jumping the straighter lines without a problem they couldn’t go higher+wider to increase the difficulty (for safety reasons) so they went twistier? Could be wrong!
@@myhappygecko2895Except you’re not seeing the horses who did all those difficult lines with ease. Any horse can not read a fence, not land into water well etc etc. this sport is the safest it has ever been
With a course like this, placings are really a matter of dumb luck. The riders can do their best and the horses are trying their hardest, but the course is monstrous; terrible angles, tiny little skinnies, no room to turn a horse, and no where to let up for a minute or two. With the heights of the fences and the length of the course, this is an event that unfairly tests horses and riders. At least the riders have a choice - the horses don’t.
Thank you for putting this together. So often falls are swept under the rug and never shown. This is so unfair to the horses. If we care about them AT ALL, the course should be more about endurance and less about dangerous gymnastic questions.
Was disappointed with some of the jumps being sooo close together. The angles of the triangular jumps so dangerous for horse and riders catching their legs a glancing blow on the points at the triangles. They need to space them further apart. Why try to hurt a horse and rider is beyond me. Why ruin a good horse's confidence?
As an old time eventer, I marvel at how different the obstacles are these days. At this level it isn't fair for anyone to second guess these riders. Having said that, I wish that this compilation was put up using a song that didn't have so much profanity in it. I think it goes against the amazingness of this level of competition.
What in the world was that disgusting music?? I agree with lucy (below) there are too many "trap" jumps. It should be based on endurance, jumping ability, and timing. All the corner fences are absurd.
The collapsible fences are an extremely good idea to stop rotational falls for the horse and rider, pity they haven’t been able to come up other new safety features for other fences
As hard as this course was and there was definitely some hard combinations. I think all in all the course was kinder and more horses completed than usual. A usual sticking point alot of the years is normally in the leaf pit where this year the b element was moved further back. I think this year the major question was the rolex corners, specially the b element. These are the best of the best riders and this is the best of the best course. If everyone made it round we wouldnt have a competition and it would turn into a dressage competition. I think the course builders did a brilliant job to ask questions of the best riders and it was in different ways to usual.
@@gwenlillianlondon3772 It seems that the courses are being designed for the benefit of the audience... Terriblely designed jumps to produce spectacular wrecks keep the audience entertained....at the costbof the horses and riders. THAT is not what eventing was SUPPOSED to be about. Burghley is much more challenging than the Versailles course, which in my opinion was far too easy for a the Olympics. The Olympic; Three Day event is far softer now not only with the short format but the actual courses, where were the drops at Paris? Many of those International riders could not have coped with the Trout Hatchery.
The Olympics was set at a 4 star course so a wider range of horses could compete against each other as well as minimize risk. Burghley is a 5 star course and is one of the hardest courses in Britain. It makes sense that this is harder.
You truly are clueless, do you think these horses can do these kind of things any day? They’re trained for years and years properly incorrectly, and they do what they love. If they didn’t love what they were doing, they would not be jumping those jumps. 🤡
Around 8:10 that horse saved his butt by not trying the ditch and the he makes him go so slow to it. That horse took care of him, maybe not what he wanted but that’s a wonderful horse. Trying to make him take it slow was not a good plan. Horse didn’t even get a pat. All those horses deserve a pat. They are asking them to do very stupid things let’s be honest.
These are the top event horses in the world at one of the very most challenging courses in the world, they love it, and receive the best care of any animals in the world. Sorry you seem so distant from that reality.
No it doesn't.... A light contact is a must when riding x country as no rider wants to restrict their horse if they miss it put in an extra stride... Seat and legs are a must as is a forward rythm..
@@heldysgirls the ones that tripped / fell refused did so because of mostly not being in a good enough rhythm and some put in or took out a stride ... Watch Ros Canter and Harry Meade that's how it should be done

I hate seeing horses crash into the solid log on the other side of the Leap, it must be so painful. And after that there's nowhere to go but fall back down into the ditch and sit down on their hocks. Could they really not just make that second part a hedge only?
@@faithandrobinx not all of them though? And this one certainly can't be or the pin would have broken and the log would have dropped when the horse got stuck on it.

@@faithandrobinxcould you ask him about the thinking on the safety of the Cottesmore Leap? Not being arsey, genuine question. The videos of horses not making it all the way across and landing on the jump are pretty horrific.

@@JohnAllenRoyce it was made safe by collapsible fences years ago, but in doing so turned it into "showjumping" across country, combined training essentially. Some of the fences at Burghley this year were just plain stupid regardless of the star rating and horses that were perfectly capable lost their confidence early on. Unessessary.
Makes me wonder how much more the course designers think they can ask of horse and rider, cause its getting totally ridiculous. Too many angles, and corners, change of direction etc which in turn horses find very tiring especially when the ground is so wet, and the going Too heavy. 🤦♀️

I am sure the course designer here - and the one before him - gets off on constructing the most ball-breaking jumps. Makes the day - and the following depleted jumping round - rather dull for spectators. Still, it is fun to watch riders go for a little dip in the pond.

Yeah, they didn’t want to have a bunch of dead horses and riders at the Olympics.
Because people die in those competitions when they are too hard. We don’t need people dying at the Olympics they will ban the sport from outrage.
Bien dit; le classement relève de cette logique mais un maximum de nations et leurs cavaliers peuvent concourir ce qui est rare.
The Olympics was set out at 3* early then 4* after fence 6 .... You can't compare any Olympic x country course to a 5* ...
If I were a horse, I’d refuse these jumps too. This should be fun and a learning process. No jumps set up to fail. Hugs to these honest horses !
