Not the best ad for the course designer.. also not every challenge was clear for the horses. 2 wide Oxers and then a Corner looking the same at first sight. Yes it's 5* BUT that doesn't mean it has to be unfair.
having spoken to a few of the riders they were of the option that there was nothing in this 5 star to trick the horses. It was the riders job to present the horse to the fence in a manner that the horse could jump the question being asked. This was a true reflection on what a 5 star should be. The question should be asked if the lesser tracks being offered as say 3 star are truly living up to the standard. All the riders and horses had qualified in their own right to be there.
At least there were a lot of the new fences which "fall down" so maybe they knew where the difficulties would be. I'm with you with "the riders job" but as i saw (live) in Luhmühlen some riders are riding without any style. they pumped the horse over the fences and in the last 3/3 of the course some horses looked a bit tired. Well of course it's a Special challenge to ride such a course but it's September so they had the full year in their back to train their horses. I definitely don't know the qualifications the riders have to get to ride a 5* course but at least i thought maybe a score for style (don't know the right english word) would help to prevent these kind of Pictures we saw. I emphasize that i am absolutely NO PRO but this should not be the way our stunning Sport is going to become. Don't missunterstand me, I LOVE eventing from my heart and every eventer knows the danger of this Sport but at least nobody wants to come back from a Event without the rider or the horse. unnecessary to say that the trust is the biggest part of eventing and it's weakened for those riders and horse who fell.
@@R8135003 Maybe, but I don't think that there were this many falls at LRK3DE this year, also 5*-- only 4 were eliminated (compared to 20 at Burghley) and 2 retired (compared to 11 at Burghley). But then again, the field of entries was much bigger at Burghley.... it does seem like Burghley's jumps are bigger and more technical than at LRK3DE and this course in particular looked huge.
@@lynnes11 61 runners,, 30 failed to finish, only one finished within the optimum time. Mark Phillips was interviewed later by Clare Balding and he admitted he got it wrong. He was contrite and said it was not his intention to build a course where thirty did not get around. Considering he has just retired it is not the way he would like to be remembered. The time allowed was very tight. I would love to see Ingrid Klimke and Michael Yueng gold and silver medallists from the European Championship attempt this course. I was looking forward to seeing Class Affair in his first big challenge. and his run out I think was rider error. That skinny needed great accuracy - a tricky, trappy fence open to mistakes. Tokyo is eleven months away and there is a long way to go to find the team GB shortlist. In 2020 all possibles must not be excused Badminton as happened recently. Back in the day that was always the yardstick for the selectors as it is such a level of difficulty, being a hard 5* equal to Burghley. Right now Messrs Funnel, French, Townend, Bullimore, Tattersall and possibly Murray are definites. Roz Canter obviously, Tina Cook and Zara Tindall if she can get the horse right, plus a few others. I thought Emily Philp did very well too. Some must work on their dressage because we ALL know that Klimke et al are just streets ahead in this phase. The Americans too will be in the mix. Munich 1972 was the last time we won team gold and it's not acceptable for a country with such depth of talent, knowledge and sheer numbers to end up always as runners up. London 2012 we were shafted due to some very arbitrary dressage marking and for FTR Rio was a disaster; the selectors sent the wrong team. Same in Atlanta 1996. Given all the horses are sound and ready to run I would hope that we will bring back gold. Can't wait for Badminton!
Oh my there’s a lot of people who are just pulling their horses face off for balance, which I totally understand in some cases but a lot of the time it’s really unnecessary..
I really admire the riders that choose to keep their horses safe and put their well-being above the competition. Those who call it in when it’s clear their horse is not ready. This course is remarkably dangerous and a horse needs a very specific skill set in order to even just complete it, I commend the riders who realise that winning a competition is never worth losing a horse.
Horses do actually like this please watch some eventing GoPro videos and even small eventing RUclips channels. The horses are happy look at the perked ears. I’m not going to fight but do research on the eventing industry and cross country industry as there are MANY Rules to keep not only horses but riders safe. And by saying I like seeing people fall is extremely rude and childish you know what. I’d like to see you fall 😙
@@kennedyalex4523horses do this in their own pastures. Horses love this. Accident don’t happened this much and guess what accidents do happened. Go to some research before you say anything. 😍
Some of these riders look horrible. They pull on the horses face way to much! Poor horses faces and back. I’m a hunter rider though. Not my place to judge.
Some of the riding at this event is obscene. It’s obvious there are a few there simply because they had the money to get them there...not the skills or the horsemanship. The poor horses that are expected to carry these fools around...there are also some really good horseman at this event too. The difference is obvious
It’s George Hilton Jones 😊 I’ve seen this happen through sheer bad luck too. They’re the best riders in the world and I doubt he went out with a tack issue like that ☺️
This course was poorly designed. Most of these horses and riders are seasoned veterans of the 5 star level. And you even saw some of them fall or have refusals. Don’t judge what you don’t know.
@@emmabush8517 Oh, please don't explain the riding to me. Fine riding and fine aids look different. These people are dragging the entire riding world into the dirty!
I don’t think you are qualified to say that as you only ride small xc trails. These are professionals riding and and yes it is dangerous. You wouldn’t be saying that if it wasn’t a failed video. Mistakes happen
@Audrey Greene It really doesn’t matter AT ALL if you ride small XC or big XC. Pretty rude of you to say that. We all can tell that these jumps are getting out of hand for the horse and rider to complete safely and correctly. I find your comment a bit ignorant and rude, just because someone is at a smaller level doesn’t mean they’re wrong. Edit: Just because they’re professionals doesn’t mean they know everything, everyone still learning how animals work even though we’ve been researching for many years.
10:30 Oh, come on! You're not a cowgirl/bow. Smh some of these jumps are way too hard for the horse. I understand it's 5*, but it shouldn't be so endangering to the horse and riders. It's getting worse each year.
I'm really surprised at the number of fallen riders who didn't immediately turn and look to see if their horse was ok. That's the first thing I want to know.
Can we please remember that these fences can be as high as 4 and half feet tall and you take them at galloping speeds? Of course they’re going to get tossed around and be off balance sometimes. Of course they’re not going to look textbook perfect at every jump. It’s cross country! ultimately, these are some of the best riders in the world, so before you comment on their technique, remember that they’re way more talented than you’re ever likely to be. Stop comparing their skills to what your riding instructor told you is the ideal form while you’re jumping your 6 inch cross rails.
2:20 Just because your flash is so tight that your horse cant open his mouth anymore than that doesn't mean your not ripping his god damn face off. If you need that much pull to control your horse you and the horse shouldn't be riding at this level.
11:25 OMG THATS RAZOR!!!!! I RIDE A HORSE NAMED KICKER AT HIS FARM!!!! Omg I can’t believe it !! My instructor has rode him many times and we are friends with the owners!!
Love Burghley but this year was tuff to watch. What let it down was the shear riding of some of the first time riders. Tbh I never thought I'd say this but I was wondering, where around the course the technical delegates were to pull up riders for their bad riding.
Totally agree a lot of these are also due to the horses getting tired, some of the riders should’ve pulled them up and called it a day. A very tricky course this year though and I know there are falls every year but this years I also found particularly hard to watch!
@@ponysrule4life Yea agree, you seen that with Jonelle and Tim Price. Jo pulled up and Tim pulled his 2nd horse up. This was great to see as they new the horses at the time were not coping. No matter what, love eventing with a passion. 👍
Minute 4:09 what a tough little horse and lucky. 💖 In all my years training horses I've never seen, until now, the horse's shoe get hooked on the under strap for the breast collar. Good horse for not landing flat on its face on that drop down rails. 💖 Hope it's rider see's this footage. 👍😎
Wow, shocked at how many bad falls.. used to go to Burghley every year but given it a miss these last few.. never seen so many falls... or riders fighting for control of their horses.. what's going on!?
I thought you had to have a minimum level of dressage and jumping before you do this? Why are half of them pulling on the reigns in the same weird way 😂😂
OMG 😮 4:29 ... freak accident/wardrobe malfunction! Getting snagged on the breastplate connector (or whatever that’s called)That’s just crazy! ( a solid reminder to double check that tack before heading out! )
I Think most of the people there arent good riders...they are agressive, havent a good sit ,are sometimes confused with the rains and not nice to the horse. You dont have to use spears and crops like this 😑
The second rider seems to be pulling the reins a bit too tight. Could be why the horse is refusing. Idk. I ride western and know next to nothing about english, but that's just my opinion. No hate :) huge respect for all equestrians
The amount of almost rotational falls in this is horrible. I wonder if the course design was re-evaluated after so many problems? Good to see the frangible pins doing their job but god this is scary
Like most of the time the riders don't even go after their horse when they fall expecting that someone/a groom will do it all... Wow such a great bond 🙄
amelie_ equestrian Well some of them were being taken by medical care and running might spook the horse further so it’s better to let someone else grab them during the time they are dazed
Some expert equestrians have (correctly, I think) observed that a number of riders this year were not adequately prepared for Burghley. It's a challenging course and if you haven't competed in the run up events you can expect mistakes through inexperience. 3:42 the man could have been dragged, permanently crippled or worse...
Eventing is a hard sport on horse and rider. I'm glad to see those jumps are now folding and not so solid anymore. So many injuries from those big solid obstacles. Way to hang on to the lady in blue and the horse who's show got caught in his breast plate strap, wow, that could have been so much worse. And good job to all for not blaming your horse or treating them badly for refusing, most still have their horse a pat.
So many uneducated comments 🤦♀️ please educate yourselves on cross country and eventing before you cry abuse or that you know better. If any of these horses or riders weren’t up to task they wouldn’t of gone through qualifying events to complete here. As for the jumps it was the course designers last before retirement, yes there jumps look a bit mad but they are within the standards and the frangible pins making these jumps a lot safer than many moons ago.
1:13 This rider’s horse was clearly agitated and then it spooked at the jump. She tried to get the horse to jump over the next one, horse clearly wasn’t having it. And that’s fine, we all have bad days. 2:06 That rider needs to lay off her horses face oh my gosh!!! Now I’m not an eventer but I know jumpers/eventers need tight reins but they usually aren’t ripping their horse’s face off like that. Good grief 🙄 3:38 That one scared the shit out of me. Glad they’re both ok. And to the riders who patted their horses after the fails, good on ya because it wasn’t the horse’s fault ❤
I’m not saying that I could of done any better but the amount of riders that completely used there reigns for Balance is horrible, and the amount of riders that didn’t even pat there horses like wtf your horse is taking you round Burghley and you can’t even give them a pat!!🙄
But yes, I do agree with the person below who pointed out that they comfort their horses afterwards, many of whom are scared about what just happened. This is done better than some showjumpers who treat their horses like machines. The time limits in X-C eventing are getting shorter and shorter, meaning the riders are taking more risks to make time at 4* and 5* events.
@@jeanfish7 I agree, however I think some of of the courses or jumps are way too hard on their legs and dangerous for the riders. Just my opinion of course. 😊
These horses are unbelievably athletic, so they manage just fine over the obstacles. But I do understand why you’d think they’re too extreme for the horses. These horses are bred specifically to have strong legs and a breathtaking ability to move and jump, and usually the (considerate) riders will check more times than you can count that the horse is doing just fine before taking them over the course. A lot of these are simply just bad luck or a small mistake in the tack/user error, it could happen to anyone. But it’s also often the riders fault, you don’t want to know how many awful people I’ve seen on horseback.
Michaela V I do too. I can’t stand seeing animals hurt. But despite these accidents we see here, the horses manage just fine and these falls are (mostly) just coincidental.
Yep thinknit is generally considered one of the hardest 5* meanwhike kentucky, although still very difficult but considered easier. Problem is a lot of the riders at this years burghley (or if not riders, their horses) where first timers at this level.

9:19 you can see the dog on the left side of the jump come running
I always check my horse like that. Loved seeing it as well.
Doug Payne - he's awesome! Great example for the sport in so many ways.
Doug has always been a great horseman
Nice to see some riders actually reassuring and comforting the horses after a fall for once
No matter how much I trusted my horse, I would never put us through this..personally I think these jumps are stupidly meaty no matter the horse xx
I like to see people fall not the horses .
Feel sorry for these horses
I agree. Think it is so cruel putting horses through this!
My horse tripped in the pasture my horse ran Into the fence it was an accident that you can’t control. Eventing is a very regulated sport and has many rules to keep horses and riders safe. Go to some research before you say anything. 😍
Great to see the safety clips save the day in a lot of these videos.
How many horses went home lame?
Amanda Smai no horses were seriously injured however I think around 6 weren’t sound after xc
Amanda Smai the vast majority of the horses in this video weren’t lame after the falls in the clips
Lameness came be caused by many many different things .. including a literal stone being in the wrong spot
Those corner jumps are bad designed
i thought the same thing they are bad design of jumps
Frangible pins saved quite a few from being much worse. So glad the sport is working on becoming safer for horse and rider.
15:14, The horse is like “ooh, is this jump suppose to be food? Let me eat human!!”
Number 69 (france i think) was absolutely ripping that poor horses face off
Edit: ffs a lot of these people were overly heavy handed
1:09 I loved how she praised her horse even after she had fallen off, now that’s a GOOD rider!
that one horse got its leg stuck i feel so bad and half of these riders use the reins for balance
He leg was stuck in the breast plate strap... that is why you always make sure it's not to long or loose
Some of these riders look horrible. They pull on the horses face way to much! Poor horses faces and back. I’m a hunter rider though. Not my place to judge.
Pony Ponies im friends with people who do xc and ive watched them ride a million times and they’ve never pulled that hard ever
Okay good. I know it’s not all XX riders that do this. These riders just suck lol
Props to every single rider who gave their horse a pat afterwards:)
Two of those jumps were ridiculous. No horse could jump them.
Yes it is possible because I was there this year and multiple people did it because if it was impossible there would be no sj the next day 😂
You are actually false. You’re only saying that as it’s a fail video ☺️
1:04
Yay! My new fav eventer
( even though I don’t know who she is lol )
ME TOO. Some people forget thier animals and if you treat them right they will want to please
That's Ludwig Svennerstål from Sweden ;)
OMG, the horse at 11:25 could have easily broken his neck!!!
Some of the riding at this event is obscene. It’s obvious there are a few there simply because they had the money to get them there...not the skills or the horsemanship. The poor horses that are expected to carry these fools around...there are also some really good horseman at this event too. The difference is obvious
4:25 that's why you can't have a loose breastplate/martingale XD
not laughing at the fall btw
AHJhunterJumper that could have been so bad if he didn’t get his foot out bless him 🙁
i know right😭
It was a mix of that and his shoe being half off
It’s George Hilton Jones 😊 I’ve seen this happen through sheer bad luck too. They’re the best riders in the world and I doubt he went out with a tack issue like that ☺️
Whoever thought that making these jumps this heigh/width was a good idea needs to be spoken too oml
It still seems to be a dangerous sport. Your very brave to leave the comments on.
EMILIE GUILLON - Equitation ikr? Most people on the comment section these days just act like they are qualified riding instructors and know better
I love it whenever I see a rider choose for their horse, and look after their wellbeing and safety after a fall or mistake. Some looked really rough.
good horses with bad riders on their backs. only as a team will you win and with the will of the horse.
I've been riding small cross country trails my whole life but I have to admit that these are too dangerous for the horse
This is poor. Horses are tired. Have no idea where they are going. Seemed totally surprised and unprepared at most fences. Wow
Wende Chamberlin Well it is a compilation of falls and errors, so...duh.
I was watching the way these poor horses where breathing and my god there whole body were convulsing 😪
10:30 Oh, come on! You're not a cowgirl/bow. Smh some of these jumps are way too hard for the horse. I understand it's 5*, but it shouldn't be so endangering to the horse and riders. It's getting worse each year.
I definitely respect the people who take the time to check on their horse (I know sometimes theyre hurt, and cannot). Those are the people who care.
I'm really surprised at the number of fallen riders who didn't immediately turn and look to see if their horse was ok. That's the first thing I want to know.
3:39 and that’s why we put the stirrup to the ball of our foot kids, honestly looks like the most excruciating thing ever
Agree.
2:51 Oh thank GOD that fence came down, omg. I was bracing for a rotational fall
Nightraven Alchemist I was too
8:48 when the rider was checking his horse was ok ! xx made me smile🥰x
3:40 now that is a SCARY fall!! I hope the rider recovered fast and the horse was ok 😳 thank goodness that horse didn’t run off!

Michaela V yes he was fine luckily, his rider won’t be riding him anymore though😭😖
Michaela V he’s going to be an Olympic horse and needs an Olympic rider☺️
I love the safety clips on the fences! Some of the falls could had been much worse without them!
9:45 *Omg thats the most epic save I hafe ever see!!*
@@jamesmcshane2922 I encountered 2 vets on the 2nd half of the course who were recording every horse for signs of excessive tiredness.
@@emmabusk3405 oh that's good to hear, but I know Burghley would be 100% on top of things. I do have a friend who was an offical at the event.
Minute 4:09 what a tough little horse and lucky. 💖
In all my years training horses I've never seen, until now, the horse's shoe get hooked on the under strap for the breast collar.
Good horse for not landing flat on its face on that drop down rails. 💖
Hope it's rider see's this footage. 👍😎
9:40 One of the most amazing saves I've ever seen
Wow, shocked at how many bad falls.. used to go to Burghley every year but given it a miss these last few.. never seen so many falls... or riders fighting for control of their horses.. what's going on!?
I thought you had to have a minimum level of dressage and jumping before you do this? Why are half of them pulling on the reigns in the same weird way 😂😂
Do the vests they have inflate when the rider is about to fall? Is it something the have to activate manually?
Havoxious they are ”attached” to the saddle by a trigger so when they fall so the trigger releases the airbags starts to fill
You dont have to use spears and crops like this 😑
I like how at 1:01 Instead of like yelling at her horse she pet it and probably gave it a treat afterwards. So cute
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE EXPLODING VESTS AND THE FRANGIBLE PINS!
The second rider seems to be pulling the reins a bit too tight. Could be why the horse is refusing. Idk. I ride western and know next to nothing about english, but that's just my opinion. No hate :) huge respect for all equestrians
I can’t understand Why some of them just cept going, i would stop direktly!!
Same I stop for sure
When the stewards come out to help grab the horses, are they filming? Such as at 3:51 and 9:17-9:20. Can anyone explain this? :-)
If you look close and good you see a dog thats run to the horse he was bite him
Sorry for bad english am Dutch
I think they were checking to see if the rider was okay, just a guess
Oh my gosh! Some of these riders shouldn't be allowed to compete in cross country! These poor horses. It's disgraceful the way they are treated.
How could u say this is good
The bunny bushes are so cute
Can we retitle this to: Burghley Horse Trials 2019 - Worst falls and refusals that probably hurt the horse and rider a crap tonne.
11:25 that made me feel sick😣
It was a rotational fall😰
I loved how many of the riders who beat their horses just before the jump took a tumble over it.
I loved the way the 2nd rider kept patting his horse afterwards
11:31 I saw that coming from a mile away
The amount of almost rotational falls in this is horrible. I wonder if the course design was re-evaluated after so many problems? Good to see the frangible pins doing their job but god this is scary
5:53 riding backwards, squeezing the horse's sides and pulling back at the same time, definetely the reason for refusal
I think the course design has a huge role in why these horses keep falling and mistaking them as a bounce
I love how many of us had the same reaction when that guy got rolled on then having his foot hung up. Could’ve have been a 1000x worse. Good horse.
Good grief 🙄
3:38 That one scared the shit out of me. Glad they’re both ok.
And to the riders who patted their horses after the fails, good on ya because it wasn’t the horse’s fault ❤
9:12 The horse was like "oh shoot, sorry bro"
I’m not saying that I could of done any better but the amount of riders that completely used there reigns for Balance is horrible, and the amount of riders that didn’t even pat there horses like wtf your horse is taking you round Burghley and you can’t even give them a pat!!🙄
I love the people that stop when they know it’s too much. Those are good people
Ok...stop exactly at 10:42 wehere is the leg and where is the stirrup?
But yes, I do agree with the person below who pointed out that they comfort their horses afterwards, many of whom are scared about what just happened. This is done better than some showjumpers who treat their horses like machines. The time limits in X-C eventing are getting shorter and shorter, meaning the riders are taking more risks to make time at 4* and 5* events.
Oh, that guy was wearing a helmet when his horse fell on him. He’s def protected. 🤔👍
When people say horse back riding is easy 🤨😂
I feel bad for those horses. Too extreme on my opinion. Why they have to make it so difficult for the horses????
Lol, a lot of these horses THRIVE on the cross country...They get lazy at show jumping and hate dressage...they LOVE the jumps and runs...
I loved the second one how she patted the horse
3:40=ouch!!! I am glad that the man got his foot out of the sturrup and that the horse did not bolt off. P.S my spelling is bad
is it just me, or is Burghley bigger and more technical than LRK3DE?
Yep thinknit is generally considered one of the hardest 5* meanwhike kentucky, although still very difficult but considered easier. Problem is a lot of the riders at this years burghley (or if not riders, their horses) where first timers at this level.
@ 9:46 My god! I thought that was incredible how the horse allowed her to grasp onto it's neck and pull herself back up. A big rapport between the two of them?
