The course designer is asking too much of horse and rider for my liking, and much the same as Badminton this year. I used to love watching cross country, but I don't now, I don't like to see horses being pushed past their limit. And some of those fences are not horse friendly, and those bloody corner fences need to be banned, and the stupid width of the fence the poor horse got stuck on. This was a very tough course, and I believe quite badly designed and dangerous. Ask yourself, just how far can you push a horse, and is the risk of injury to horse and rider really worth it?. I think you probably know what my answer would be without me even saying it.
I read there have been several concerns and criticisms raised by riders about this year's course (first year for new designer) with formal requests to reviews some of the combination fences that were just too confusing and left riders with little time or ability to safely assess where they needed to be etc. I did notice mad excessive number and letting at one or two and few riders said it was these they couldn't work out their arse from elbow. Suddenly they were faced with a fence directly in front and had to "Shit shit shit go go we have to take this one!!" which explains why more riders than usual were giving a crack to their horse on approach and then retiring shortly afterwards. They quite rightly said it felt too deliberately confusing as though designed to leave horse and riders with little chance to make those assessments and adustments on the hop which you can't do when a slight mistake means a massive risk of serious injury. Be interesting to see what changes and little things have been tweaked by next year.
This is an absolute mess. Considering most of these horses stumbled similarly over the same fences says a lot about how these courses are designed… these all could have ended a lot worse
Just because neither horse nor rider died, does not mean they were okay. The impact on a horse's musculoskeletal system is immense, even if they get up and walk away from a fall. Interesting compilation to see how this years' course has passed the sweet spot into potentially dangerous vanity by the looks of things. Used to love watching xc as a child but no sport is ever worth undue harm to it's entrants, a slippery slope welfare always must be paramount. I hope they revise and tone-down whats' being asked next year as very lucky not to have even worse outcomes going by this upload. nice image quality and editing also.
Honestly they shouldn’t have even tried the fence. They had their horse practically sideways and barely moving and there was no was that poor horse could’ve made it over. It’s like these people forget how to ride and hope their horse will save them.
Honestly the riders weren't great but this course was just setting them up for failure no matter how good/bad they were... this years course was just to far
Omg 8:40 was just flapping like an idiot praying the horse was gonna save their ass. Whipped for the 1st water jump so the horse jumped then couldn't sit it and proceeded to do the exact same thing at the next and by the 3rd the horse said fuck ya 😂 goes to burlghy and their riding ability is lean back pull whip and pray my horse makes up for my shitness. Great form
I noticed that too!! She was a limp noodle and was hanging on the horses mouth while beating it with the whip...She doesn't deserve to be around horses..
Is it me or are these obstacles getting more and more difficult for the poor horse. They push and push. Until it’s fatal,it’s as bad a horse racing this year.
Owners who ride their horses over these jumps make me feel sick. The risk of injury is so high!! This is not a sport. This is just some sick entertainment, used for money. This takes away the beautiful horsemanship and creates fear in these horses, fear that will push them until the end to make their rider satisfied. It's unbelievable how much trust they have in us. Poor creatures
(sorry for bad english) im gonna speak as an eventer here. i love doing xc, and wouldnt give up for anything. but honestly, i dont get how horse and rider can make it over some of these jumps without one or both being injured. i'm glad they're all ok, but some of these jumps are asking a lot/too much (example: the cottesmore leap) and i don't plan on doing some of these.
The sport is turning from a sport where you know your horses limits and when they feel off, to pushing them over ridiculous jumps and asking for them to be injured. Cross country has turned from a lovely sport to watch to a sport where people just watch to see a horse get injured. To use the word "best" falls is ridiculous this is just showing that people are only interested in the horses getting injured. Don't get me wrong their are marvellous riders in the industry that put their horse as their first priority but some of these riders and shitty course designer are horrid to expect a horse to jump some of those combinations.
I would love for any of these riders to list and detail the reasons why it’s necessary to whip a horse so much (I counted 1 riding whip 5 times into 1 jump) and then have the FEI list and detail the reasons why they continue to allow this to happen. Followed by the govt listing and detailing the reasons why this isn’t covered by animal cruelty laws. And just for a bit of entertainment, these people probably call themselves animal lovers 😂
@Jellybean Dakota how come? I have been a three day eventer myself. Not only “been to shows” where I live and where I don’t live, also trained with people who have won Burghley. People are allowed change their points of view. But let me know where I’ll find the answers if I pop along to a few more shows where I live.
At 1:42 I just never seen anything like that and I also don’t want to be like those people but can we just thank the rider! He got right up to make sure his horse was okay, he did not even worry about himself and ran straight to the horse trying to help the horse that really shows he cares for his horse 🐎
Jumps that do not come down easily or cannot be judged on the backside by the house should be outlawed ...the people who put an animal through this is cruel...no respect for them
1:42 real horsemanship here. Just got flung off the horse and you can see he was mad at first but after he realized his horse was caught on the jump, he totally forgot about the competition
Really more it looks like a lot of them cannot actually ride the way they need to, less about control and brakes. Some of them seem to be using the horses faces too much too.
A lot of the horse and riders here were not fit and not up to the calibre of a 5* event hence so many falls refusals run outs and withdrawals. Burghley is a steep undulating course only made difficult by so many related distances and combination fences and shows up the wheat from the chaff in experience and skill. Sadly they were in their droves at this one. Also its dominated with way too much warmblood breeding and the courses are basically showjumping outdoors, little more than high class interval training. Bring back the 3/4 x ID I say and the lovely old fashioned galloping course!
Horses are beautiful animals, which goes without saying! But they can do some damage when they're overwhelmed with something, and that course just looked so dangerous in so many ways, that I don't blame the horses or riders for things going wrong! Whoever designed that course should find another job!
I guarantee you, the creator of this video lied when they said all horses are fine. I'm 100% sure most of them suffered physical trauma due to these events. Not even gonna talk about the mental trauma...
I don't know how many f bomb's I dropped watching this. Some of those angle's and combinations where just hideous. The horses aren't robots, it seems to get more technical each year and not glamorous to watch either.
A lot of these horses seem so disconnected with the riders and the riders seem so disconnected from their horse and what’s around them. This course too is just so complex for such a big height. All around these riders and these horses shouldn’t be riding in this situation. After watching the whole video I’ve come to the conclusion that some of these falls or refusals could have possibly been prevented if the riders could tighten their reins and actually properly balance their horses. Others should have had their horses well normalize with jumps like that and with big crowds with smaller jumps and technical lines. I’m convinced if some of these riders had their reins properly tightened and their horses balanced, they would have had the confidence to jump over those jumps and jump them well (by “jump them well” I mean not hit it and fall over). But don’t get my wrong, I think the course designer/designers are very much apart of this too. The water line was no where good. The horses couldn’t even recollect themselves from the thing they just went over at the speed and energy needed to pop over the next thing. Look, I’m sorry for being so rude in some peoples eyes but in my eyes, I’m telling the harsh truth and that sometimes needs to be told. Do people every test run these things anyways?
I watched this and was repulsed. Whomever designed these jumps needs to be dragged over the jumps behind a terrified horse to knock some sence into them
Some of the jumps this year were over complicated but others were unfortunate crashes due to lack of or too much speed, a horse refusing or maybe a horse slipping. These jumps are designed to test the pair but some were a bit too much.
You said at the intro that horses and riders were all okay but I do not believe you. The riders looked fine but some of the horses not so much. When is too difficult just too damn difficult??
This problem has been getting worse for decades. The course designers and the eventing industry keep saying they are making it safer but this shows something far different. I only competed up thru 3-day prelimary and that was back in the late 70s. But with greed and evil growing in mankind, all horse competitions are actually just cruelty to the animals.
This was painful to watch… whoever the course designer was needs to retire… in no way were those good combinations and some of those riders need to learn to release and follow contact and maybe pull out before they hurt themselves and their horses… there’s no shame in keeping you and your animal safe
Wow, anyone can see the MAJOR Issues with those corners , that water ( how many full on side flop and potentially ruinous rotation falls on that??!!) and those crazy wide oxers- frangible pins??? Ummm what happened to them? I’m sadly expecting a bunch of falls from these top five stars these days… but THIS WAS EXTREME! Makes you definitely question the sanity of the sport. (Former eventer here- I stopped after recognizing my horse’s anxiety about cross country. )Never looked back
To all the people that think the horses are ok because they stop moving right after their fall, that is likely because they are in physical shock, and unable to move their muscles due to the big impact they just took. They could internally still be critically injured.
The fact so many top combinations missed that corner after the leaf pit indicates there was a major design fail there, and there shouldn't have been that many rotational falls. The guy on the dark horse at 07.53 should have been pulled up by the stewards, as the horse was exhausted and walked away lame following that fall.
looks to me like the horses didn't see that corner at all since it was hidden before they got up the hill, and it surprised them with like half a stride left. I'd refuse that too.
I used to enjoy watching horses do cross country and the strength and bravery of horse and rider, but it’s now gone too difficult and dangerous, there is always a risk in most sports but it’s weighing up risk and this course went too far putting the lives of horses and riders at risk. Anyone who truly loves horses would not allow their horse to be tested on this stupidly dangerous course. I don’t believe the best horse won, it was pure luck who got round in one piece, all who finish this course should be grateful to still be alive.
The difficulty is that these top horses haven’t been out as much over the Covid period, so for some almost 3yrs. The courses designed, to me, seemed like a good step from 2019/20 tracks. The issue is that some combinations just may not be ready. There’s only so much preparation you can do but at the end of the day competitions are completely different. Just look at the police horses for the jubilee and funeral, bomb proof horses, trained daily, you possibly wouldn’t say the occasions were to difficult and testing like these courses as that’s what they’re expected to do but mentally the horses and maybe the riders weren’t ready to be under pressure…
Yes I agree but that's the exact direction eventing seems to be going. I think this will eventually lead to the demise of the sport. However I will say that the 2022 Burghley was a much tamer version than the 2019 Burghley where horses where falling like crazy. (As if that was any consolation!)
the fall @ 7:52 was awful for the horse. i dont support cross country as it has become so dangerous int he higher levels but the rider did a great job on falling and not getting hurt
Wer solche Hindernisse entwirft oder baut ist für mich jemand, dem das Leben eines Pferdes bzw. dessen Gesundheit nichts wert ist! Armes Pferd, die Wucht mit der es auf das Holz knallt! Entsetzlich!
Some have the frangible (spelling?) pins and some do not. It also seems to depend on the angle/force with which they are hit. As a hunter/ jumper rider I am certainly no expert on x country jump construction.
The amount of danger these horse are put in is simply ridiculous! And for what? For rider and viewer, enjoyment and thrill! Even if they have nothing "broken" the amount of pain they must feel after falling on themselves or crashing their legs against a huge solid jump over ridiculous terrain. This is honestly appalling! And no horses don't like to jump this! Imagine throwing your body at full speed again a tree or on to the floor. You'd probably break bones! Why would we willingly put our horses through that risk?
Design Absolutely the Most Dangerous Obstacles for a Heavy Animal with Long Thin Legs to Attempt to land on the opposite side of at Full Speed and it's No Longer Sadistic Cruelty, it's "Sport."
I'm not really ok with "no horse was hurt ", sure they may broke nothing , but you can't fell and take bars in the belly without being sore after... That poor horse falling of all its weight on the bar at 1.30 the leg stuck under, you'll not make me believe it felt nothing. I like cross, it's really impressive, but that race was poorly designed, when all horses struggles ont he same obstacle, it's not anymore an error of the rider or the horse
The rider shouldn't be asking their horses to persevere through this crazy obstacle course yeah I agree that the course designer was asking too much of both horse and rider the rider should know better than to push his horse that far
6:46 horse in water walks out lame behind. I would have called for a trailer for horse at 11:42. Mr. Fox Pitt can’t afford to fall off ever again. Burghley took no prisoners this year. Yikes.
It's been a very long time since I've ridden cross country but it seems that the obstacles and course designs have gotten way demanding, complicated and dangerous for both horse and rider. The horses are balking and falling over the same obstacles, there's something wrong.
There was some bad riding but there were also a lot of sympathetic riders who understood the mistake, did not punish and either tried again or signaled out.
@@gottasay4766 There's a very distinct feel and atmosphere at Burghley I'm not sure what it is or how to explain it but many competitors say BHT is their favourite of the lot for similar reasons. Just a lot of love, spectators that are so supportive, encouraging and make sure every faller, refusal and rider that just calls it and retires is given a rapturous applause for a superb effort. Felicity Collins calling it after that near miss at 6:20 is a perfect example of how the overwhelming majority know and respect their horses when they've had enough. I do recall a few years ago when one horse refused and the rider (can't remember her name but she was a US rider) really cracked him two or three times in quick succession but in sheer temper and frustration. It wasn't a tap to wake him up either it was sheer anger and every spectator gave a loud collective “Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhh” in disapproval and pretty much shamed her into retiring. You almost never see that type of poor rider though fortunately.
Und bei dem rappen sieht man deutlich an der Galoppade, dass er schon müde und ausgelaugt ist. Der Sturz war vorprogrammiert!!!! Ein pfui schäm dich an den/die ReiterIn!!!
For cross country I thought the jumps looked higher than I've seen before. I've never been a fan of making a horse gallop down a steep hill. The rider gets a whip and a flak-jacket, and the horse has to deal with it. It's also sad and sickening to see a horse stuck on a fence. When is it enough? :(
this is absolutely the most poorly designed xc course ive ever seen. youd think theyd test the course at least a few times before competition day and when practically all the horses refused certain jumps and obstacles just cut those jumps
I love horses and cross country but you are only hurting you horse running this course. I hope someone can tell me I'd someone was able to finish the whole paecour without missing a jump or missing couple of jumps and how many failed
The horse number 38 deff did get hurt from that even if it's just a small thing cause when they walked away you could see he was sometimes not Properly setting the foot.

It is awful to watch most of these riders don't even know the basics, they ride like a Bag of potatoes.....
And they call this cross country? Some of these man-made jumps are ridiculous.
They really are I love xc but this too much
I would do cross country but NEVER jumps like this. You are putting yourself in serious danger doing these really dangerous jumps.
I agree.
These jumps are literally made for the horse to fail. Absolutely ridiculous and dangerous. Surprised none of these horses broke their legs
100% it's disgusting to watch...
Turned off at 3min
@@mountainconstructions i am still on the add didn't even start the video.
Some of them broke the legs .
2:45 what a good horse! Saves himself before he flips and lands on his rider 😌
Happily horses aren't as mindlessly cruel as some people, one of the wonderful things about them...
I mean he did not flip on him but he sure did try not to make him fall
Honestly they shouldn’t have even tried the fence. They had their horse practically sideways and barely moving and there was no was that poor horse could’ve made it over. It’s like these people forget how to ride and hope their horse will save them.
So many rotational falls! Very dangerous...
I also love how pheobe Buckley retired after two refusals you could try again but it would be fair on the horse
Smart rider, knowing when the course is demoralizing her horse and it’s better to walk away.
Such riders should be born again... as horses.
not all, some are very kind to their horses
Honestly the riders weren't great but this course was just setting them up for failure no matter how good/bad they were... this years course was just to far
That poor horse that got stuck. That must have hurt and been scarey.
Zero Care for the Animal this
Omg 8:40 was just flapping like an idiot praying the horse was gonna save their ass.
Amy Riordan The rider only gave his horse a reminder, nothing wrong with that.
Oliver Townend never knows when to stop. I’ve seen him keep pushing tired horses all the time, which nearly always results in falls!
He sits on their backs which makes them tired!
I often help with the filming and editing of this event. I’m glad I didn’t go this year.
I love how Harry mutch went straight to help his horse up
At 1:42 I just never seen anything like that and I also don’t want to be like those people but can we just thank the rider! He got right up to make sure his horse was okay, he did not even worry about himself and ran straight to the horse trying to help the horse that really shows he cares for his horse 🐎
Swedish cross country is still difficult but it's not dangerous! These falls are really scary!
The fall at 6:42 looks like a pretty bad fall I feel so bad for all of these horses who fell it looks so scary
The first horse stood by the rider. That’s so sweet ❤️
This course is just plain dangerous and shouldnt be allowed. I get stuff gets harder the higher up you get but this is just insanity. 😰
Jumps that do not come down easily or cannot be judged on the backside by the house should be outlawed ...the people who put an animal through this is cruel...no respect for them
You are absolutely right ✅️
1:42 real horsemanship here. Just got flung off the horse and you can see he was mad at first but after he realized his horse was caught on the jump, he totally forgot about the competition
Those horses are trying thier best and the obstacles look like they're designed to injure/ kill the poor horses and riders. Borderline abuse really.
100% Abuse.... And for what?
Or funny business going on.
It looks like a lot of these riders have absolutely no brakes or control. Bit scary when these jumps are sooo huge!!
Really more it looks like a lot of them cannot actually ride the way they need to, less about control and brakes. Some of them seem to be using the horses faces too much too.
They actually have more control than you imagine.
4:09 WTF happened there? It legit looked like Grandslam was looking so far ahead he just didn't see that fence at all 😮
he is just living up to his name
To me it looks like he stumbled after the first fence and just wasnt able to regain his footing in time to go over the jump or refuse
Horses are beautiful animals, which goes without saying! But they can do some damage when they're overwhelmed with something, and that course just looked so dangerous in so many ways, that I don't blame the horses or riders for things going wrong! Whoever designed that course should find another job!
Completely agree
I guarantee you, the creator of this video lied when they said all horses are fine. I'm 100% sure most of them suffered physical trauma due to these events. Not even gonna talk about the mental trauma...
Horrible horse ABUSE!!! That poor horse hung up on that jump!! You KNOW that hurt like hell the way he slammed into that jump!
I don't know how many f bomb's I dropped watching this. Some of those angle's and combinations where just hideous.
The horses aren't robots, it seems to get more technical each year and not glamorous to watch either.
Horrible putting these horses in danger over courses like this. Riders yanking on their mouths ...its disgusting
If they loved horses, they wouldn't ask this from them. Gruelling and abusive. This is what good horsemanship is not!!
there is no way that the horse @ 1:40 did not fracture his stifle
love the person at 2:35 cause she felt her horse had enough and didn’t keep pushing. she also gave the horse pats after.
Good decisions by the horses who refused to jump, at least they can ‘think.’
The fall at 1:40 made me feel sick
I don’t want to watch horses or riders being hurt.
But with greed and evil growing in mankind, all horse competitions are actually just
cruelty to the animals.
Same fences that create the same accidents? Course designer needs to be sacked.
Jesus Christ, were the course designers actively looking to make someone have a rotational fall?
That’s what I think. Underground gambling
The black horse was out of gas 😢
I hope the person that designed this course isnt aloud to do it again. This course asked way to much out of the horse and rider.
These horses are never okay. Just sad.
WTF are you guys doing with the reins???
The difficulty is that these top horses haven’t been out as much over the Covid period, so for some almost 3yrs. The courses designed, to me, seemed like a good step from 2019/20 tracks. The issue is that some combinations just may not be ready. There’s only so much preparation you can do but at the end of the day competitions are completely different. Just look at the police horses for the jubilee and funeral, bomb proof horses, trained daily, you possibly wouldn’t say the occasions were to difficult and testing like these courses as that’s what they’re expected to do but mentally the horses and maybe the riders weren’t ready to be under pressure…
at 3.00 i love how the horse just stood there and waited for the owner
its hind leg is hurt.
Am i supposed to laugh at BeST FaLl AnD ReFuSaL bec i am mad not HaPpY and is more like painful fall and refusal.
Who here agree with me.
Unfassbar, wer sein Pferd liebt geht nicht so ein Risiko ein.
Exactly
The horse at 7:50 seemed so exhausted, poor horse
What an unnecessary fence 😢
Wer solche Hindernisse entwirft oder baut ist für mich jemand, dem das Leben eines Pferdes bzw. dessen Gesundheit nichts wert ist!
Armes Pferd, die Wucht mit der es auf das Holz knallt! Entsetzlich!
Seems that downhill jump got everyone.
What happened to fences being pinned so they fall if a horse gets caught? 😬
Some horses like jumping, mine drags me over jumps half the time?
I agree with you 💯 👍
Alot of these riders are yanking the crap out of their horses mouths. A horse in pain wont do what u ask
Poor horses. That guy at 7.58 was riding his horse much too hard.
Design Absolutely the Most Dangerous Obstacles for a Heavy Animal with Long Thin Legs to Attempt to land on the opposite side of at Full Speed and it's No Longer Sadistic Cruelty, it's "Sport."
@S Equestrian Not when they land on two front feet.
I like the way you ride your horse Nannette
Should be remained "Animal Cruelty"
I'm no greeny but this is disgusting..
I'm not really ok with "no horse was hurt ", sure they may broke nothing , but you can't fell and take bars in the belly without being sore after... That poor horse falling of all its weight on the bar at 1.30 the leg stuck under, you'll not make me believe it felt nothing. I like cross, it's really impressive, but that race was poorly designed, when all horses struggles ont he same obstacle, it's not anymore an error of the rider or the horse
what brave horses and riders. hope everyone was ok.
Sadly there's a thin line between brave and stupid 😕
Not much consideration for animal welfare
Only hope the poor horses 🐎 are ok, dont care about the riders hew forcing😡 the horses to jump 🤬higher and👎 whipping them 😳😡
Could someone explain how they got the horse at 1:45 unstuck?
They probably got a group of people to lift the horses back end over the jump
The rider shouldn't be asking their horses to persevere through this crazy obstacle course yeah I agree that the course designer was asking too much of both horse and rider the rider should know better than to push his horse that far
6:46 horse in water walks out lame behind. I would have called for a trailer for horse at 11:42. Mr. Fox Pitt can’t afford to fall off ever again. Burghley took no prisoners this year. Yikes.
The rider of the horse that was lame said everything is alright now and that they would make a soft end of season for this horse :)
Just a reminder 3 horses died this year
Doing what?
@@sidilicious11 Doing what your watching!
It's been a very long time since I've ridden cross country but it seems that the obstacles and course designs have gotten way demanding, complicated and dangerous for both horse and rider. The horses are balking and falling over the same obstacles, there's something wrong.
Sometimes enough is enough. That one horse was gassed and she just kept pushing
There was some bad riding but there were also a lot of sympathetic riders who understood the mistake, did not punish and either tried again or signaled out.
Agreed
What a disgusting cruel Video barbaric torture, poor horses 🐎 shame on you cruel riders 👎😠😡😣🤬
Und bei dem rappen sieht man deutlich an der Galoppade, dass er schon müde und ausgelaugt ist. Der Sturz war vorprogrammiert!!!! Ein pfui schäm dich an den/die ReiterIn!!!
Could care less about the riders they CHOSE to go out there , the horses did not ,😣
i wish people would just ride horses other than making them do this crazy stuff
Also I do think it’s kinda nasty the way they smack the horses like that
Why, sometimes the horse needs a hard smack.
Are they trying to kill horses and riders
this is absolutely the most poorly designed xc course ive ever seen. youd think theyd test the course at least a few times before competition day and when practically all the horses refused certain jumps and obstacles just cut those jumps
Poor horses 🐎 getting whipped SPURS should be banned 😡 its very cruel animal abuse to kick the spurs in the horses sides 👎😠😡😣🤬
And number 51. The neck that must have been actually painful and he was breathing really fast after
