Spot on with the note about them not being able to talk. You'll notice in the MV that none of them are actually singing along until the very end when they get to the "I don't wanna wife" section
This one was a pre-release for their "2" album, with an intention of being a promotion to get attention in a busy release season. It WORKED. It's controvercial, talking about the expectations of a Korean Wife in marriage, and the hinted sexual lyrics banned it from the radio. Still amazing to hear all the members rap and, as usual, make a point beyond the music. Only I-DLE. =)
Yep, you pretty much nailed the intent. "Wife" caused a pretty big stir in Korea since it is a highly conservative society. Some weekly award shows outright banned the song and another show didn't allow the massive points from album sales since (they claim) the album points go to the title track (Klaxon) from the same album, which was also winning weekly show awards at the same time. Nevertheless, Korean youth really like the song and Soyeon still featured the song during the year-end award show performances... basically she un-banned it throughout the year by continuously including it during live performances. Progressive Queens!!!
Your lyric analysis is always spot on. Great, insightful reaction. You will start to recognize them by their voices. Yuqi for one (my bias), is unmistakable, deeper a little scratchy. Miyeon: throaty and full. Minnie: (can go) high and clear. Soyeon: nasal. Shuhua: airy.
Wife was a pre-release of their second full album "2". The song & concept was absolutely hilarious, even with so-called “sexually explicit” lyrics that got it banned by KBS. It worked so well to grab the attention, and became an iconic b-side. The girls actually performed Wife on two year-end award/festival stages.
I love this song, very repetitive and "hypnotizing", they all look the same to show how everyone expect every wife to do the same Lyrics have double meaning, showing how everyone expects regular wife to do all this stuff, they dont lip sync like wives have nothing to talk, they start do it at the end when they start speaking their mind. Very unique song and interesting lyrics-wise
These lyrics don't make much sense to an english audience, but one day I got the enlightening, that it's not meant for us 😂 I guess that's why they didn't put CC's in it, which was already unusual for them. It's apparently a parody made as social commentary on Korean expectations of a Wife. In truth, everything about this Release, from the lyrics, the broken english, to the Outfits, to the MV itself and even choosing not to include CC's, is all very intentional.
Another deep song by GIdle, but this one is a little hard to get the nuance of if your not Korean I think. For example, the line, `I make you feel so high, I make you feel like lie`, references the expectation in Korean society that the man has a career, and the wife put her energy into boosting him and his career, so, talking about how great he is, but its all lies. The Korean part is full of Korean sexual innuendo, sufficient that on some platforms, it was banned. Contrasting the difference between what a man publicly wants from his wife, and what he expects in private.
I've rarely seen the point I'm going to make (so maybe it's stupid?): can't LIE be used with the other meaning? As in to LIE (down) in a bed? I can see it making sense as well.
@riderzaur I'm not Korean, but I have seen a video by a Korean who used to do Korean English translations break down the lyrics. He explained it in the sense I did, the wife lying to make her no good husband seem good, because that's what wives are supposed to do. I haven't heard it explained in the sense you have, but unless Soyeon explains what she meant line by line we will never know for sure.

Been waiting for this one. Cant wait to see you react to I Do and I Want. The Heat album in general is fire (no pun intended)
I think u understood what they wanted to convey through their m/v perfectly. As usual, spot on analysis.
Thanks you for the reaction !
