  • It really is beautiful inside Apple's walls.
Apple’s hardware, software and services work so harmoniously that it’s often called a “walled garden.” The idea is central to recent antitrust scrutiny and the Epic vs. Apple case. WSJ’s Joanna Stern went to a real walled garden to explain it all. Photo illustration: Adele Morgan / The Wall Street Journal

Edit: also I use apple car keys as well. It’s really good. Just tap your phone on the door Handle and the car unlocks. The car also knows it’s you so it moves the seats and steering wheel and mirrors to your position. It’s really convenient if you have car that is used by multiple people. Time is the greatest asset we have, so anything that makes us more efficient with our time, even if it costs more is a tick in my book. After all, once the essentials are sorted, there’s nothing wrong in investing in something that is more enjoyable to use and enables us to spend more time doing what we love or with people we love. It all adds up. Some people define value for money as what specification you can get at x price point, I definite it as the value it brings to other parts of my life, by simplifying what I need to get done daily.

Apple is a software company not a hardware company. Samsung is a hardware company, thats why they cannot compete. People like apple products because its neworking ecosystem, its the fact that you can network with friends and family easily. It's easy and its simple and people adopt to that. Samsung on the other hand have great hardware phones but they lack longevity and easy, great, simple networking services that people can easily adapt too. In the end its about software , not hardware. If other tech companies focused more on software and not so much on the hardware they would drive in more customers. Thats my thoughts on the situation.

Yea if your budget limits your choices, and you care more about chasing this years new specification rather than the overall user experience and privacy, then Apple isn’t for you. How about Apple using the Watch screen as an LTE antenna? Or the speaker enclosure of the 2015 MacBook as an antenna? Where’s the innovation in the antenna market?
Apple’s the first company to use a mini-LED display in a mass-market product. Where’s the innovation in the display market?
And on the other hand: Look at all the innovation that’s been stifled in the email app market with Apple making their own Mail app. Oh wait, most good ones have been acquired and then shut down by Google, so Google’s killing the innovation in that market.
What about Apple having its own music app? Surely that’s stopped competitors from making their own music apps and services. What? Spotify, Pandora, RUclips, and a bunch of competing services are thriving regardless?
Huh, weird. It’s almost as if Betteridge's law of headlines is at play.

What’s more dystopian is Google building an entire operating system with the premise of harvesting user data to sell to advertisers. Unlike agreeing to the terms and conditions when you use an Android phone to agree to Googles data collection practices, nobody is forced to use an Apple product, if people feel a need to remain in the ecosystem if they feel their devices integrate more seamlessly, then that speaks more about the quality of the software. Google and Amazon scare me far more than Apple.

At least Mac runs Darwin Linux, so it's kind of open source. It also uses RiskV architecture so part of the hardware is open source. And new OS and Hardware for every Apple product means they don't just lock out other companies, they keep a high cost for their own device compatibility users pay for.
Open source hardware is also available, but it can't compete with the latest designs in hardware and software and UX that Apple spends a lot to make.
