      Bass has been sitting up front in the last couple years and hasn't bushes. Thanks to shows like this and the many bassist taking on the RUclips algorithm and companies focus on bass effects exclusively for bass.

    As a guitarist even, this is one of my favourite shows yet. Playing with people rather than in your bedroom is the best part of playing music. Developing that instinct is the hardest and slowest thing I've found, but when you start to get it, is the most rewarding. It's as if you have to throw out all you know about playing and start to just listen instead. Playing with people taught me that my rhythm sucked and now thats the bit i try think about most. Simpler and tighter is always more enjoyable than listening to someone treating the rest of the band like a backing track for themselves. And amen to being the worst member in a band! I still suck but that's so important for developing!

    Bass player here - Any chance of filming an updated Jon Stockman video? He has a signature darkglass pedal that is amazing. Tim lefevbre, Justin meldal Johnson and Juan alderete are all excellent bass effects users.
    Another cool idea might be to get some bass effects manufacturers/designers on the show? Doug Castro from darkglass or spencer from 3 leaf audio?

    As a bass player primarily, you guys have helped me so much on my quest to be a better guitar player. Loved this episode! Dishan is a pocket monster! If you're taking requests for bass-centric episodes, I'd love to see a shootout between the various styles of DI boxes (powered, passive, Jensen transformers, etc.) There's a few out there on RUclips, but they all lack the clarity you guys seem to provide on every topic. Thanks from the US.

    Rhythm first. Always. Dishan really nailed it on that one. The dryness of the new room really brings out the detail of the recordings, good call on that construction decision. Sound wise the intro blues sounds like a record. I did a double take because I thought for a moment a backing track was playing. And kudos to Mick for those horn-like licks on the outro funk. The four of you just made the world a better place. Greetings from Puerto Rico.

    I love hearing his philosophy.
    It was about 14 years of playing guitar before I picked up bass (ended up playing for 4 years in a band as a bassist).
    The one thing that pushed my guitar playing forward more than ANY other thing.
    It's the most important guitar on stage, and the one taken least seriously by most. It can single-handedly make or break (read: ruin) a band's sound.

  • @Dartheomus
    @Dartheomus 5 лет назад +8

    I was really feeling bad for Douggie, and then Mick came over and gave him a hug! Good man Mick!
    Overall, this was an awesome video! As a guitarist who **tries** to do some home recording, I feel clueless when I add the bass track. I know that playing bass is more than just playing the root of every chord! This was a really good intro, and I definitely would like to see more of this! (I also like the band synergy talk, particularly when Doug and Dishan talked about what they were omitting to make space for each other.)

I have a nephew who is an accomplished bass player. I never really paid much attention until I had the opportunity to hang around him some. Then, I checked out All About the Bass on Anderton's, just for the heck of it. Nathan and Lee are both very engaging and would make good guests on TPS, I believe. It would be nice for them to focus on bass cabs and let people know that heavy cabs which bump ≈100Hz to sound deep were superseded by lightweight cabs with real lows about a decade ago (e.g. Greenboy's designs and Barefaced Bass). Major manufacturers are making the same old stuff for much the same reason that teenage guitarists buy used 4x12s.

    • @rodavision
      @rodavision 5 лет назад +1

      I play both and it is very rare to find gear that works well for both. Most guitar gear sounds cool on bass but cuts bottom end so for amps I’ve always found I need to use a bass amp/cab or direct to board with a good sub because guitar amps (including "Bassman") sound lacking with bass. For pedals I need bass pedals (with a very short list of exceptions) or guitar pedals that have a dry through to mix. The dry through preserves the bottom end. Remember that perceived bass isn’t the same as actual low frequencies that you need in a band setting. What sounds low at home is often lost in a mix.

  • @yetanotherbassdude
    @yetanotherbassdude 5 лет назад +2

    I am so freaking happy you guys made this video. I love Dishan's approach to the instrument and the I agree so much with how he thinks about bass, and it was just awesome to see him break things down and pull back the curtain on what makes a good bassist. Also that jam at the end was *unreal*! There was just so much groove and feel between all of you guys, it was just awesome.
    If you guys are looking to do any more bass videos, the one that I'd love to see is a look at bass tones, both with just the amp and also with effects, and how they relate to guitar tone and the rest of the band, kind of like when you looked at guitar solo tones a while back and broke down what made a bad tone and then what you could do to make it better.
    For me, a big part of how I approach any bass tone is to see where it fits sonically with whatever else is going on, and I think it's the biggest mistake that a lot of bassists make is to forget that, especially when it comes to adding effects on the bass. Like guitarists, we bassists are just as guilty at find tones that sound great on their own, but in band just don't work. The low end drops out, or the high-mid note definition is lost, or whatever. I'd love to see you guys delve more into that relationship between bass tone, guitar tone and the rest of the band, drums, etc.
    As always, cheers for the great videos guys! Can't wait to see what you tackle next!

I would love to see more of these handled with this much care and expertise. I will say, as a guitarist who gigs as a bassist as well, this reinforced a lot for me. I will recommend for fellow guitarist to try shortscale basses, as they can be far easier to connect to. I have fallen in love with Fender Mustang Basses and Fender Bass VI. Young Mr Abrahams has certainly got his Funk Thang going.
    Pleasure watching this one.
    I'd have sworn he was playing Flats till he told us they were Wounds.

    Oh, the patience of poor Dougie. Godess bless him. What a disciplined saint! I had not see this for ages, but a bass player asked me: is there a channel like TPS for bass players? I said start here. Compression is what you need most, but. . .

    I love where this bass sits in the mix. And he’s a great player!!

      Thank you! Mick here. I realised during the audio edit that I know nothing about mixing bass! We will - as ever - live and learn. I made it kinda loud because it’s a bass show. Cheers!

    I agree on Doug. You are a master who doesn’t hit shit all the time. Again I just love show from the mere fact that I feel like I am sitting around shooting the shit with you guys. Keep up the fun!!

    Thanks for getting such a cool rhythm section on the show.
    I play electric guitar, acoustic guitar and bass in pretty much equal measure and I have a completely different head space for each instrument. It’s like being able to drive a car and a motorcycle - both are modes of transport and there’s some commonality but to do either well requires a different skillset.

    I haven't played in a band for years and this episode reminded me that when you have a really good interaction between bass and drums it gives the guitarist the luxury of space - you don't have to play all the time. As I play on my own I tend to overfill things. Memo to myself, relax and sometimes less is more. Cheers.

    "Bass players are kinda chill in the background type people." This can be so true, and so often the way you can tell the difference between a bass player and a guitar player playing bass.
