In this episode we tackle the problematic subject of using wah-wah and fuzz together…
PROBLEM 1
Your fuzz - especially germanium fuzz - sounds ‘best’ when it’s the first pedal after your guitar. However, most people prefer the sound of fuzz AFTER wah. So why not just put fuzz after wah? Problem 1: the wah range is greatly reduced with a traditional fuzz after it.
PROBLEM 2
Forget about wahs for a second. Some fuzz pedals sound unpleasant if there’s a buffer before the fuzz in your signal chain. This is because the input of a classic germanium fuzz is relatively low impedance and works better seeing your guitar pickups directly; if you put a buffered output from another pedal between the guitar and fuzz, the fuzz starts to sound ‘bad’.
Now introduce a wah-wah and run into the real confusion…
WHAT WE LEARNED: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
1.Germanium fuzzes sound odd with a standard buffer before them, eg the buffered bypass in most non-true-bypass pedals, or the inbuilt buffer in TheGigRig G2.
2. A germanium fuzz placed AFTER a standard wah-wah can make the wah lose a great deal of its range. Putting the fuzz BEFORE the wah means the wah keeps its range, but doesn't sound as 'good' overall. Some people love it, and that's cool.
3. A wah-wah with a built in buffer to the wah circuit pretty much solves the ‘fuzz-after-wah’ problem. This is really confusing because we are putting a buffer before a germanium fuzz which we thought was a no-no! So…
4. Don’t confuse a regular buffer or buffered bypass with a buffer built into the effected sound of the output of your wah-wah. The buffer is only on when the wah is on in the case of the Fulltone.
5. Ergo, if you want your germanium fuzz to sound good after the wah, you need a wah-wah that specifically addresses this issue. It can be done - hooray!

OH THANK GOD!!! I was going through TPS Withdrawal Syndrome.... huddled in the corner in the fetal position, muttering "mega" and "interesting" to myself in hushed, reverent and slightly manic tones!!
Gary Stackhouse
Don’t forget “ACE”!
Wow, just been looking for this kind of stuff. I've sold all my rig and next week I will be buying Hendrix strat influenced by my last dream, so wah, fuzz and buffer is all I need now. Thank You Guys for this episode, much love from Poland!
Thank you TPS, for being the best part of Friday
+John Bradford ah, cheers John :)
My favourite thing about this channel is that these guys seem to genuinely enjoy each other. No competition.
We’re good mates. United in idiocy. Thanks for watching!
I just want to thank you guys for the table of contents you always put in the description. I love to watch the whole show, but I just don’t have the time to watch all of every one. And this was a great example of where the overall topic isn’t something relevant me, but-being able to skip about and pick bits to watch-I still got a lot out of it.
Awesomeness. Takes me bloody ages to do that, so I’m glad it’s useful! Mick here. :0)
Please make a DVD/Bluray box set of all your episodes! Thank you!
Being an American I have a deep inner urge to sue due to the pain and suffering incurred from there not being a show last week.... but I love you guys too much! So glad you're back!
Nice Hendrix reference. We're being taken off the air. Breaks into the best Sunshine of your love version. I love that! Well done Mick. Great show guys. That tele looks "mega" Daniel! Enjoy.
Awesome cheers! Glad you got it! :0)
Just finished a run of nights in A&E and had to walk home (6 miles) because I live in Rochdale and we can’t cope when it snows. Honestly it was freezing, but I was kept going by knowing I had a that pedal show to watch when I got home, and you guys didn’t let me down. Thanks guys for yet another brilliant vid! Gunna have cheeky beer and watch it again because I can ☃️
Ah Andy, you make us blush. What you do sounds actually, genuinely useful and important. Thank you on behalf of everybody you help. And thanks for watching!
For me the issue with Wahs is the tone sucking frequency response in the bypass mode, which you mentioned near the end of your video. I think thats what the Fulltone switchable buffer can help.
Finally!! My life has been incomplete without these videos!!! Keep up the good work guys!!
Thank you for the most cumulative and straightforward explanation of one of the most frustrating issues we guitarists face. Bravo! Can't wait to hit the studio tomorrow afternoon and the gig tomorrow night with that knowledge in hand! Much obliged
Great to see you guys back. I wonder if there could be a Wah design that would have a buffer switch AND a humbucker mod switch?
"Don't give a three year old crack"... quote of the year right there! :D
Solid advice as always Jason! ;0)
Jason Wilding my Mum needed to hear that...
Too late.
Here to like this comment 3 years in the future.
"Fuzz Faces aren't Fuzz Faces."
Happy to have you back. On the west coast of the U.S., I wake early on Thursdays and lie abed watching the show!
I have a Monsterpiece germanium fuzz -the result of your Analogman fuzz show, numerous hours of research, and a middling budget. It is a very nice pedal.
Two observations in addition to your excellent comments: when following an envelope filter, the filter not only sounds shrill and awful, it gets really loud. When following a buffered pedal, the fuzz isn’t too bad, but it loses all of its ability to clean up with the guitar volume control. The Monsterpiece GE otherwise cleans up brilliantly, a major reason I chose it, thanks to what I learned from the aforementioned show. I find this is also true of some overdrive pedals.
+Mark Sieber yep, they’re all a tad different, react differently in situation, it’s really interesting. Monsterpiece sounds awesome
great to have you guys back. Really missed you last week.
I'm not a huge lover of the blues, but DAMN, Mick! I could listen to you for literally minutes ;)
Hahaha!!!
Great show, I’ve been doing my own investigation on buffers and you guys displayed it tremendously 👍🏻 Looking forward to wahs pt. 2, including the madness of buffers(ala Joe Bonamassa still liking it on) different inductors, classic vs. modern, etc.
Wanted to say thanks. Because of TPS I’ve really come to enjoy using pedals. I just received my Analogman Sun Face and been loving the fuzzy goodness. Thanks for the time you guys put into making these videos and looking forward to future!
Cheers Phil - thank you for watching and for the kind words!
Fantastic episode! They all sounded great, and the tips based on what you learned was helpful. My favorite sound is still time and again the Analogman! Love those. I am still saving to order me one.
Also received my gigrig abybaby, and I love it. Built like a tank, the switches on it are glorious, and I am loving playing through 2 amps!
+Isaac Johnson ah, awesome stuff Isaac. Dan here, two amps, it would be hard for me to go back to one, even with the Hammy I’m using something else as well, such s great sound :)
I actually liked the Hubcap fuzz more than either AnalogMan. The guy made a great sounding pedal for sure.
Great show. The Hubcap Germanium Fuzz Clone sounded great.
Been waiting for that one for a long time now. Thanks so much guys. Keep doing what you're doing. Suggestion: for humbuckers use a tone bender with wah or fuzz face followed by range master
Another great video, guys. I watch these at work, helps me get through the day. Beautiful guitars btw. Love the new telecaster and Mick your strat is killer, too. I just picked up this week a new guitar, too. A gently aged to perfection 97 American standard Tele, in sage green w a pearloid pick guard... I’m in heaven. Playing through my vintage 30 hot rod deluxe.. sounds glorious! Cheers guys!
Welcome back, we missed you
Snowed in today, ended up rooting out my a battered ole big muff and v845 thanks to you guys.
Channelling my inner Hendrix and pissing off the neighbors.
For real Mick, that harmonic was crazy!!!! I'm glad you said something I would have let it pass by. What a sound!
Only 41min. After a week off. This has only slightly alleviated my craving for TPS. Already looking forward to next Friday. Cheers!
Love the Hubcap Fuzz!!
And yes, kids these days are NOT into guitars. I work in a UK school.... :(
WAS WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO SOOOOOOO BAD!
Yes such great information and sounds!! Just wanted to say love the show guys been watching for a year now. Thanks so much!!
Thank you kindly - glad you find it useful!
Congratulations on the new Tele, Dan. Looking forward to the comparison video. P.s great to have you guys back..
+Joshua Dawes cheers J, she’s a beaut
Please do an episode on various Rat pedals. The OG old school Proco, Arc effects soothsayer, walrus Iron horse etc.
Welcome back!
Welcome back, guys! When you did your extended piece on the Analog Man Sun Faces, I didn’t think there was much difference between the silicon and germanium variants, but back in the shed the NKT Red Dot sounds so much more alive, and works so much better with the wah pedals! Muffs are generally not as sensitive as fuzzfaces to what’s put ahead of them in the signal path, but that said I’ve not heard any Sovtek-style muff sound as good as that Russian Pickle, with or without the wah and/or buffer. Still wouldn’t swap it, though, for my Vick Audio 73 Ram’s Head - check it out!
Nice! We have more control on the shed. Micing, amps, etc etc....
Congrats on the Tele! That bridge reminds me of my broadcaster style, has that flatpole fat but clear back Pickup sound, sounds wonderful
Yes! Now I just need to get home from school 💜
Hey Filippa, hope you’re all good!
Thank you Mick, I'm great :D
love the analogman nkt sound
This was the best one yet. Lots of questions are now answered. Thank you and keep it up.
+Matthew Shanley Cher s Matt, glad you liked it ;)
I was waiting and waiting for this episode to be realized, apparently got tired of waiting and missed it by 4 months. Thank you for this episode!
The two best smells. Nitro Cellulose and Castrol R! Awesome show chaps 👍
Cor, Castrol R. I remember being a kid sat by the TT course breathing that in. It’s never left me. I think about it and I’m right there again. Mick here.
That's pretty much what the KISS aftershave smelt of.
Nothing beats the smell of R30 mixed with Avgas. Except maybe the inside of a vintage Gibson hardcase.
Blendzall is a close second. ;-)
That Pedal Show same here. Went again last year to the Classic TT and it was amazing to see and smell. Wish my bike was a two stroke. We get scooters coming through heading to Isle of Wight and most of them run it. Heaven.
Could you guys please cover how to fix scratchy wah/(guitar even?) pots, it's pedal/guitar related and it would be a huge help to everyone. There's not really any clear tutorials and your's would be the be all and end all. Thanks!(I have the Clyde standard I love it but it's gone scratchy)
A bit late buy try some eletrical cleaner on the pot!
I have as much fun watching your shows as you guys making them, which I guess is why they are so good. :)
Awesome - cheers Roberto!
Just got an Ibanez Talman Prestige recently that looks just like that Telecaster. Happy for you man.
Get „Slipperman“ Tim Gilles on the Show for high gain!
Monster Recordist and Mixer and hi-la-ri-ous-ly entertaining guy!
Best day of the week, it's TPS day
Another great and informative show. Thank you.
+1 for Mick's Wah playing. Something about his timing and touch makes for a perfect fit with the Wah. Keep up the good work, gents.
Thank you!
I just bought a hubcap John fuzz on Wednesday!! £43 delivered, bargain!
Wow, that fuzz pedal sounds so good it makes me want to take up smoking!
Guys thanks a bunch for doing this subject. I specifically asked for it a few months ago. 😊👌
For quite a long time, a big-box Double Muff was my main drive. It was really frustrating I couldn't use a compressor or a wah before it. If only you guys were around back then!
Am I the only one who noticed how the EP-3 Echoplex (my favorite delay pedal btw) really improved the sound of the Wah examples? I just happened to be trying out my Crybaby Mini with the Echoplex and Preamp on my new Holeyboard last night. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles - it just sounds the best.
Mick Hammett
Gadzooks. That would be the day. Wouldn’t trade all his cash for having to play that stuff though. //ducks, runs for cover//
Hahha no need to run from me at least. Love the sound of that wah and all the features though. Really just smooth and sexy sounding. 'Nother great show gents.
Love from Canada :)
The Larry Leadfoot of wah. Issue that Mr. Hammett a ticket!
I have an older Chase Tone Wah with a built in buffer in the circuit. It’s been the best companion to my MKII Tonebender for years now
Been looking for a video like this forever! Thank you so much
Show on half cocked wah-wah pedals and the Fulltone WahFull.
EHX Cock Fight
Jacques Trinity!
Damm my fuzz sounded great, Dan & Mick made it sing,
Hello John! Thanks for sending it in!
Amazing pedal!! I love mine too!
Where can I buy one?
currently have a waiting list. hopefully i will be listing some more end of this week on ebay.
Yeah, I want one of these also
Interesting subject this, I had issues running a wah before the Keeley Monterey (fuzz/vibe pedal) with the similar noises you were getting there with the Hubcap John. I found that the only way I could remedy it was placing a Boss tuner between the two pedals acting as a buffer while the tuner wasn’t engaged.Gives me another reason to buy a 183 Analogman sun face now though! Great video thanks!
Thorpy’s original veteran (ge) seems to play nice with just about anything in front or after it... not sure what he has done but it’s much more ”amicable” with the others than most ge fuzzes. Great episode again!
Dan if that's your new guitar I hope it was cheap, it's all worn and the paint is rubbed off!
acctually, look at fender custon shops
Snakeskin *whoosh* :)
dude it's a Relic Telecaster (probably late 50's or early 60's)
ok just checked it seems to be an early 50's Heavy Relic Tele
Gibson guitars are great and Hubcap John's fuzz sounds amazingly good. I bet he is going to be backed up on orders now. I can't find one online lol
+Chris Hamm a quick google search will show you the link to his fb page. Yep, his stuff sounds unreal
+Chris Hamm thanks and i currently have soldering iron in one hand and writing this with the other lol.
Few orders come in John?! ;0)
Are You serious?!! I just got a fuzz have a wah and buffer and have been unsure where to place them... You guys aren't just tone wizards you're mind readers?? you make me feel so special!
+BenBrandt just for you Ben ;)
Blown away that you're using a hubcap John pedal. I've got his Fuzz and his version of the Beano boost, and both are bloody amazing. Good on you for supporting the "little guys" as well as the big names!
Cheers! There’s no ‘support’ about it though. John sent us the pedal, we plugged it in. If it’s unique and interesting - and sounds good to us - we’ll give it a go!
98jsbx98 really glad you like your pedals :)
Get out the candles and bubble bath, honey! New video is up!
The Guitar Geek Ha! That's exactly where I've just watched it!
i don't think any of us are ever going to recover from the josh smith show
Me included. Mick here. Hard to get up from that.
Although the Joey Landreth was pretty awesome too !
David F joey remains undefeated.
mark norris I felt inadequate....
Great show! Looking forward to Dan's new tele review, and that stunning looking 335 gibson Mick.
hey guys, im a 63 year old man who hasn't played in 20 years. before that I played my 72 tele since I was a teenager. you have sparked my interest and amused me at the same time. LOL. very informative and fun to watch. good job! Dan, you crack me up!!
Nice one Mark, great to have you back in the game! Let’s make some noise!
847 rules. Never dug fulltone wahs
OMG THAT TELE IS AWESOME!!!, WHY IN THE WORLD HAVE I SOLD MINE?????!!!
+Vince Mattens telecasters, duncan a good one (or two) and you’re golden
Vince Mattens I have one for sale...deluxe
Oh no!! Tele's for life.......
Yeah!!! Great episode legends!!
I don’t care what people say, I’ve always run my wah before the the fuzz. (Sometimes better results than others but mostly great!)
The RMC10 sounds great in front of the Red Dot and weirdly if I happen to leave the BiComp on at the start of the chain the Analogman fuzz still sounds awesome!!
RMC10 has ‘fuzz friendly’ something or other. Which probably means a buffer in the output maybe? Interesting!
The distinction between germanium diodes and transistors was very informing. These seemingly very basic issues remain confusing to us 'little people' including impedance matching, buffering and circuit design. Thanks for helping me understand a bit better
Me too Jerry - Mick here. Like we’ve always said, there are no answers, only better questions. We’ll stay committed to making those questions better. Thanks for watching!
Wakka wakka
Excellent video, brilliant playing, great Fuzz sounds, thank you.
Dan, love the newTele, sounds Killer, Mick love the 335 and the colour is awesome.
Melbourne, Australia.
Cheers John! I was very fortunate to find that guitar. And I picked it from two - the other one was just as good!
This is topic that I had to deal with with my board. I have a MXR LaMachine & Vox V847 (amongst other things) and when I initially put my board together I put my Polytune between the wah & fuzz thinking it would cause a sort of break & allow the two to work together. Nope! Wouldn't work together at all, just would not wah with it. Now I have them right next to each other in the chain & they work it'll wah. However the wah adds a substantial amount of high frequency boost to the fuzz, so even when it works it's a crap shoot.
Very nice. I have no idea about the buffer on/off part - but I'll try it out. I just love a super quacky wah.
Love the Strat headstock pointing to the pedals.
Can't wait to hear the red vs butterscotch tele.
Read the description text. It may demist things slightly! :0)
Thanks so much guys, repositioned my buffer in the chain and my fuzz face sounds killer now!
Awesome! Information for my problems lol. I think I need a better fuzz though and I'm gassing for hubcap John that sounds better than the fuzzface pedals I have tried. Cheers!
Wahoo just got a new EHX Green Russian Fuzz and a TC Electronic Polytune 3 with buffer switch. Can't wait to watch this .... and .... Go!
Spot on show. Welcome back. PEACE
Big Muffs have feedback clipping (similar to a tubescreamer or other "overdrives") and a relatively complex tone circuit in addition to the overdriven transistor clipping that most fuzzes (including the Fuzz Face) utilize.
Good show TPS makes my week . how soon till the home preg. test is out lol
Worth being snowed in, thanks guys great time had watching this in such inclement conditions.
+Xfire Xx ah, that’s ace, cheers x. Just been sledging, so much fun ;)
Oh thank the lord!!! I needed to see you guys having fun! I've had a shit week ❤️🎸❤️
We wish you a better week next, Anthony!
Congrats on the new guitar Dan!! Nothing like a new guitar.
Great video, guys. Thank you Danny and Mick.
+Jimmy Joe ;)
love the show! can you do a show on parallel effects? specifically drives. similar to wet/dry put with different mixture of drives on each amp. thanks!
Nice. We should get into this.
Hence, a switcher is a must when using traditional fuzz pedals with non-true-bypass pedals to remove them away from the signal path when not used. Thank you very much. Now, I have got it, me thinks.
+Ali Boyacıoğlu cheers Ali, id say it’s not essential, but it does help :)
Forgot how much I love hearing TPS clean straight amp tones, amps sound great, micing sounds great
Thank you kindly! That means a great deal to me personally. Mick here. :9)
You do a great job, very inspirational stuff!
Guys so great to have you back! And also with exactly the show topic I was waiting for - this really makes up for the lost last Friday :) - you may remember my strange buffer experience with the JHS Firefly (Tonebender Type Germanium fuzz) and only working properly with buffer in front of it...(I think I got some good answers here - although it’s still a little odd). Thanks so much! Btw Dan your new guitar looks and sounds gorgeous - and even without a direct comparison available yet - totally different animal than the red, it’s stunning - can’t wait for the explanation ;)
Ps. I like the wha after fuzzes (he two) much better since - although using standard ‘65 single coils - I have the feeling of hearing what you heard with Humbuckers in front of them with my setup - so again good answers - you guys are awesome!
Cheers Volker! So with fuzz before wah, are you going into a clean or driving amp?
Knew you’ll may ask that :) Actually I’m going into a medium gain setting (11h of low) looking glass into the 2h clock clean channel of a silver jubele (20w) - so very mild crunch with single coils - however, mostly use full volume of guitar when use the wah with the fuzz!
That makes sense. The extra drive from the amp is helping for sure. Wah after fuzz into a clean amp can be a little spiky. But the Jubilee... mmmmmmmmm
:)))......I’m tellin’ you ;)
Thank goodness you're back, I was having seperation anxiety!
Us too!
Yes! Finally! Thank you That Pedal Show
Great stuff! Very informative!
This show is what your show is all about, getting into the nitty gritty of tone.
Dan's new tele sounds nice, but I think the vintage teles you had on the show a few months ago sounded better.
Well there’s a surprise!
Perfect timing as usual, just bought a London Fuzz which is due to land....can’t wait! Thanks again.
+Ed Parker cheers Ed, London Fuzz is ace, enjoy ;)
HEY GUYS! i LOVE wah pedals they maybe my favorite pedal with the uni vibe up there to i have also in the last year or so fallen in love with fuzz face style pedals i now have a BOG mini FF,gerrnanium OX FUZZ and i am having a silicon OX FUZZ made for me right now. so when i sore that the video was about wahs and fuzz faces HAPPY DAYS!
Hooray! We hope it helps you get the most from the new toys!
28:19 This is a point that I think a lot of people (myself included) forget. Having a clean vs dirty amp as your base really impacts where you should put your fuzz/wah. Honestly, it's the reason why I have two fuzzes; one before, one after the wah. I have a Bassbreaker and love the "Mid" channel, but sometimes when I'm running a looper or need to be clean for part of a song I have to switch to the "Low" channel and it kills my JHS Firefly. Throw in a Tone City Fuxx Fuzz after the wah, and I'm good to go.
Nice nice nice!
This episode is a perfect illustration of your “just better questions” philosophy. Nice work, guys.
+Tomsdrawings cheers Tom :)
I found that a Fulltone Catalyst on high gain [Flame] mode would constantly self-oscillate when I put a Fulltone Clyde [older/non-buffered] in front of it. Different issue, but a case where a buffer was probably the only way to make that setup usable.
I have run into similar problem with an octavio pedal (EHX Octavix). Originally I put it after the Wah, as I thought it is not a Germanium device, it is not a rangemaster or a fuzz face, so it can go after the wah. It sounded terrible. Than I placed the Octavix in front of the Wah, now it sounds awesome together with the wah (and without it as well).
