Why don’t you appreciate the designers achievements with this set, reduced colour palette, no options to go with stickers e.g. the lazy easy way of Lego nowadays. The set is a great build and shows that the rainbow colours on the inside are totally unnecessary and when you see the many great Mocs on rebrickable that this was a great decision.

Might be the first and only time I disagree with Tiago. Love this set! The build, look of the spaceship, play features, printing with no stickers are all perfect imo. Still an awesome review as always.

Same thing here. It feels like Tiago was on a bad mood the day he reviewed this...
I hardly understand how you could point out that "colorful hidden structure" would really be "missing", and showing the blackpanther head which has absolutely zero "playability" whatsoever...
The set seems so amazing I bought it only based on the reviews, even if 45yo me didn't personally had the original Galaxy Explorer back then.
Lego Space always was my favorite theme, and my dream ship, which I owned, was the Galaxy Commander (SET 6980) and the monorail, which I also got :-)
The slick looking, plus no sticker, plus great swooshability, plus retractable landing gears, plus 4 seats and minifigures, plus extra cabin with beds, plus embedded rover with deploying ramp, plus 2 additional instructions sets available (online) all this under 100€ made this a no-brainer to me.
(The only part where you could argue, in my opinion, would be the missing crater plate and landing pad, but we all know there was no way to have something equivalent without doubling the price.)
I fully adhere to the idea that it's most likely the best set for 2022 (on top of being the best set "price to value" wise).

This is the BEST SET OF 2022 in my opinion!
Wonderful and accessible with its price. No stickers, excellent details and throwbacks, and the build was SO MUCH FUN! Mike Psiaki did an amazing job with this.
And even though the Castle set is so much bigger and "grander," this set seems MUCH more polished and inventive. 10/10 set for me!

This is probably my favorite set of this year. The techniques were awesome, but at the same time, not crazy. I got it as soon as I could, and built it with my dad, who’s favorite theme is classic space, as he grew up with it. I really wish LEGO makes more anniversary remakes!

Born in 1979, I got the original set when my older brother gave me the Lego he had. And I still have it. I checked in my old lego box and I found almost all the parts (I miss like 4 of them) and built the original galaxy explorer. So I took a few of lunar base base plates from that area and I displayed both the original and the redesign set side by side and it does look very cool.

I used to own the 6890: Cosmic Cruiser, one key factor I like about these sets.
Is that you can reconfigure the set to your liking so it's not just fix to just one way of building it.
I wish I would have kept it but unfortunately the set along with others I have threw them away when I was young.
The nostalgic factor is there so hopefully can see more retro sets like 6378: Shell Service Station which was another of my favorite set
    Which I also owned before.

I think It's one of the best, if not the best set of 2022. Looks great, It's a great tribute to the original, It has a few play features that are fun and for sure the price tag is really good for the shape and amount of pieces It has. In a Lego world full of Ultimate collectors ultra expensive sets and meh sets overpriced and full of stickers this set is an oasis in the middle of the desert.

I got the castle and I think that is the best set ever created in terms of size, beauty, theme, playability, but this craft is starting to really appeal to me too. the only problem is it is lacking context. There are no other factions or base plates to interact with. I do really like that 3 ships can be made with 2 of them though. Its definitely a rare gem of value especially when some big brand store has had reduced price on them. As collectibility I wondered since it is really targeting adults, but I think even kids these days would really love a set like this. I would much rather buy my (future) kids a line of space rather than a branded space theme. So I picked up the castle to be able to do that for them in the medieval style.

  • @anthonysiebenmorgen7216
    @anthonysiebenmorgen7216 Год назад +1

I’m baffled by this review. This is one of the best lego sets ever produced, and one of the best set of 2022. The only valid complaint here is the scratch-prone windshields. Not having a colorful internal build construction (note: not for the ease it provides when building, but simply because it’s colorful) is not a valid criticism. The technic parts were essential for the structural aspects of this, and I myself am not fond of technic builds in the slightest. I am also not an original owner or have any connection to the original space sets, so I don’t have nostalgia glasses as a factor either.
The number of inventive and fun designs you laid out which are revealed throughout the building experience, the numerous play features of the build, the incredible look of the set, the amount of printed pieces, the unbelievable price point, and that it has 3 different build variations… I don’t understand how anyone could be disappointed. Lego needs to know this is what we want and it’s a disservice to give this an “it’s alright” response.
Now, that said, in his Best Set of 2022 review, Tiago does give this a very favorable review and even chooses it as a favorite (in terms of objective value) despite reiterating he doesn’t care for the set, which deserves props.

Honestly as a 25 year old who hasn’t had a Lego set since 2008, as soon as I saw this at the Lego store I purchased it without hesitation. And for a whole month I haven’t been able to stop playing with this model. As in actual play with it lol I have model kits which I hardly get play from so this was definitely a breath of fresh air. Thanks for the review. I really cannot understand the complaint about not having a colorful strucuture work - it's one of the frequent complaints about Lego that these exist to a point where people are mocking the company for them. Those other details you mentioned are minor and for someone who worked at Lego you could have come up with something better to validate your criticism, just saying it out like that felt like throwing shade at another Lego designer.

Totally disagree with all the negative things you've mentioned here. This set is absolutely amazing. And please note I have no connection to classic space at all since I was far from born then. How the cheese slopes aren't aligned with the tiles in my opinion makes it look even better, since else it would look too bland, and I do not at all care about the colors on the inside being colors that existed at the time. Heck I love that!

I personally *dislike* the crazy coloured interiors for most sets, because while they don't matter for the set model, since you can't see them, they matter if you want to build your own. I have little use for crazy colours that don't match any theming... Give me more bricks with theme appropriate colours I can reuse easier!

I love this set, honestly. I wish the Lion Knight's Castle set had been more like this one - despite all the new features, bricks, and techniques used in this build, it still visually feels like a classic set and looks perfect if not seamless alongside classic space sets from that era. Lion Knight's Castle references a lot of elements from the classic sets, but also clearly stands out from even later-era original Castle sets.
Of course I'm pretty biased in that regard as someone who still has a lot of old Lego sets, and therefore enjoys being able to display them alongside each other - that's not gonna be a factor for many, if not most builders :)

I thought Mike did an excellent job of keeping the Technic part of the build very basic and simple so as not to upset the Technic haters (like myself). As for the gaps???…….. Tiago, Why the preference on rainbow brick built on insides? Especially on this set? If LEGO and the designer really wanted to go 100% retro inspired, all the insides would be built with the same color bricks ( monochromatic ) as the sets were in the 70's & 80's. ( I understand the modern era, but yesteryear, most if not all sets guts were the same color).

great review! This was my absolute favorite Lego set when I was at age. I was enthralled by it. I recently assembled this anniversary set, and I was overjoyed! The attention to detail was over the top. And I especially enjoyed how the designer took special care with each of the items that once-upon-a-time would easily break / pop off when my Dad would appreciate what I'd just built. Thank you Dad! for getting me the first Galaxy Explorer when I was 8! So, This Galaxy Explorer has Way reinforced attributes. still items will come off from time to time... right after building it at the age of 50+! and then showing it to my dad of 75+ I managed to accidentally bump a number of pieces off when I was demonstrating a fly-by and super cool landing scenario... However, the overall structure is super secure and ain't busting up on a no re-entry anytime soon.
    All that said..
    Thank You Tiago!
I just watched 2 other vids by you.. The 90th Castle review. Super! Similarly, I don't care at all about the Castle theme from a nostalgia standpoint, but now am doubled-down on wanting this build. The Land Speeder review which reinforced my desire -- that's also nostalgia lane, and it's good to hear it's got interesting design build tricks hidden beneath the unassuming exterior..
I really appreciated a common element in your vids I've seen so far, and I did hit Subscribe.... You share and tease cool stuff, but don't over reveal the design tricks. Also, just fun to watch! thank you!
There are a few other reviews you've done that I will hit Save for, and then watch them after I've already taken the plunge and built them. A lego Renaissance if you will. and cool to have your perspective to review afterwards. Thanks again.

I got $75 for my birthday last year and decided to use it on LEGO. It was a choice between this and the Creator Medieval Castle. After hearing some opinions and also finding out that it would be retired in the next year, I sprang for the Explorer. I also have no personal connection to the classic Space line, but this set impressed the hell out of me in so many ways. The details, features, and building techniques used are all amazing. Until I watched your video, it never even occurred to me that this thing didn't come with one sticker, which was nice. Then there's the value. I kept waiting for sale at my local Walmart that never came, but I wasn't too upset given the $100 price tag was still good for what this set gives in terms of piece count, play value, and, again, all printed pieces. I have to disagree with your nitpicks regarding the gaps and the technic pieces. LEGO can't be expected to create perfect shapes with their designs, so gaps are just expected for me. Meanwhile, I am not a fan of LEGO Technic and dislike having to work with a certain amount of technic pieces in building a non-Technic set, but I also see their value in being integrated into other sets. They add so much structural support and allow for so many possibilities in designs. They're an inconvenience for me, but they're also an inconvenience I'm willing to put up when the final build is as good as this.

Of course those legos are long gone, but this definitely hits the nostalgia feels so I'll be picking it up. Any idea how long this set will be available for?

It's a great set if you have played with the original as a kid . I would have preferred a release of the baseplate too.

I personally love this set, what a treat for the 90th aniversary! Makes me wish Lego would upgrade the entire Classic Space theme for modern builders and release it as a tribute to the theme.

The only thing I dislike about this set is the brick-built white arrows on the rear. As cool as the construction is, I'd much prefer to have simple printed elements as per the original and save the pieces used in their construction to be used elsewhere. Otherwise this is a spectacular set. And the scratched canopies are supremely annoying.

To be fair, scuffed up windshields are far more authentic. Both in terms of a retro set, as well as a space ship/plane build. That being said, I get it. It can be annoying if you intent to reuse it for MOC building. You could always try polishing it, as time consuming as that would be (and expensive if you don’t have the tools for it).

I used automobile clear coat polish and an old rag to polish my canopies (took the scratches right out), it took about a minute for each canopy and they look pristine now. 🙂

I generally assume the rainbow interiors are only there so that the elements which are unseen when complete are easy to read and complete during construction.
You might say that commitment to the grey and other color might be a difficulty upgrade for older builders. My only issue is that there are not 4 different colored astronauts. Blue, red, white, black, show the spectrum.

I am still waiting for a review to point out there is quite a bit of variation in part 85984, the "double cheese slope". When you put a few in a row, like on the sides of the wings, you can sometimes see some slopes suddenly sit lower or higher up, instead of being perfectly aligned. And it's not a matter of these not being fully pressed in place, the slopes actually differ sligthtly, causing the offset.

I still have the original Explorer. Time to dig it out and build it again. I have great memories playing with this set… Is the new one better? I don’t personally think so but it has great play features the original didn’t have.

Guess it depends on what you mean by "better".
If you prefer a modernised version of the classic ship, then yes, this is better.
But if you wanted something which retained the awesome simplicity of the original then no this isn't better.

I'm sorry to hear that this was model was a let-down for the reviewer. For me, it's one of my favourite sets to come along in a very long time. Yes, there is a serious nostalgia element, but I also really like that it is an unlicensed, classic LEGO build with great play features and lots of opportunities for customization. I have many of the big Star Wars collector's models, and other branded nostalgia sets from Ghostbusters to Winnie the Pooh. All of them are great and fun in their own way. That said, none of them capture the original spirit of LEGO quite as well as this new Space set.
I only have two complaints. The first I share with the reviewer, the big yellow windows should not have been packaged with loose bricks. They arrived scratched right out of the box. The other minor issue is a simple design detail. I wish the yellow and black strips had been inset flush with the top surface of the wings instead of snapped on top. They look like an afterthought. Otherwise, LL-928 MarkII is an absolutely brilliant LEGO set, especially since, without the licensing fees, you get a lot of pieces and play value at a much lower cost than the Star Wars sets.

My biggest problem with this set is ironically its biggest play feature. No matter what I do no matter what I twist or bend, the back doors just cannot close properly, meaning there’s an ugly seem running down the back which is stupidly obvious.

I like a lot about this set, but there are some playability issues that I think may be a side effect of the up-resing done for this anniversary version. First, this is great as a collectible model. However, I have two kids, and I let them play with the high end Lego sets I collect for my own purposes. After all, Lego is a toy... and my philosophy is it should be played with.
For this set, I noticed that the doors on the back regularly fall apart around the brick built arrows if kids open them too far. Similarly the nose of the spaceship tends to bend and warp, especially when being carried as this is a natural point to hold on while flying it around. While this rarely causes pieces to pop off, it regularly needs to be realigned and squeezed back together. Similarly, the leading edges of the wing can pop off easily if bumped. I understand the motivation to add detail for these collector level sets, but sometimes it comes at the cost of durability and can feel like an attempt to pad the part count.

I was going to get my son the lunar station, but as soon as I saw this ship I was sold. It's 30 dollars cheaper, looks fantastic, and holds more stuff? Deal dude
I wish they still made the Mission to Mars sets, which I grew up with, but this is even cooler than the fighter that separates in my opinion. All without the custom parts of that set.

I was born in 1984 so I never had the chance of getting the original Galaxy Explorer, so I was nostalgia-free when I got it. And here is what I think. This set is a masterpiece! I dare to say it's the best set Lego has made in the recent years. The details are out of this world, the building techniques (especially in wings and the aerodynamic fuselage) are incredible, and playing with it is so fun it should be illegal. However I'll agree that the very first step of its construction with the Lego Technic parts can be annoying, but after that it's so much fun to find all those unique techniques, details and updates, such as the interior of the spacecraft. And even more fun to play with it. All with only 110 Euros in Greece.
By the way, the red astronauts are the pilots and the white ones the scientists. Just saying 😛
And by the way once again, I even modded it a bit by putting the green and red navigation lights in the right orientation (green in right and red in left, just like in airplanes and modern spaceships such as Dragon by SpaceX), making the rover look more like the Lunar Rovers from the Apollo Program, and giving those astronauts visors and different heads for extra variety.

A fantastic set. I can't think of any critizism. I had the original one as a kid ... and the new one is just a fantastic reinterpretation in every single detail and even so much better!
I also love the 924 reincarnation and would wish they bring that one as well as a second set (so you don't have to buy another 10497 and be left with a lot of unused parts).
If there would be ANY critizism thinkable, I'd say the 918 reincarnation is a bit uninspired. (That one has no landing gear, for example, and the astronaut does sit in a very weird angle in there.) But the original 918 and this 10497 are a great pairing :)
