I honestly think it would've been better to release each model individually as their own sets rather then having the 2 smaller ones be rebuilds of the galaxy explorer. I would be willing to spend $100+ to get all 3 models rather than $300, now I understand why they didn't do it that way this is an anniversary set and they probably weren't thinking of making a line if sets for these but still would've been pretty cool
it only takes 2 models, so that would be 200, and at one big box store I wont mention sells it for 75 right now. Its tempting.... but dont really even have that for legos.
I just got mine delivered today! I had the original sets in 1980. Wish I still had them. I’m 51 years old now. Recently I acquired the alien conquest sets + extra abduction ufos. Currently on a recollection binge for space lego as I am blessed with a 6 year old son with a love for creating his own lego builds. I’ve been scooping up random lego from thrift stores and marketplace for 3 years now. We have a decent supply of creative pieces and sets, plus my sets which are not to be taken apart ! Lol😁We Are in awe of your lego showroom! Subbed.✌️❤️
I only own one copy of the 90th Anniversary Galaxy Explorer, and I don't plan on disassembling it or buying multiple copies of it (I don't have the budget for it), but I do have a suggestion for the extra parts. As you showed with the original Galaxy Explorer's box art, LEGO provided a number of potential alternatives. I think that's an excellent starting point. You could also attempt to recreate the Tower from the original Galaxy's Explorer set. Unfortunately because I don't have 3 copies of the set, I cannot provide more than vague suggestions.
I feel like the Black Oxygen Tanks were referencing the Blacktron Cruiser GWP set like the 2 x 2 tile printed with the radar detecting the Blacktron Ship rather than the Black Classic Spaceman
That was a thorough and complete recap. Awesome job, Great Work! Love if you follow up with a video of what you decide to do with the left over bricks ! I have the original Space Cruiser ( as you call 2 man ship) got it for Christmas 1979. Looking to get the new Galaxy Explorer for Christmas this year ( as a nostalgic throwback to my own childhood).
Wow, this really hits my nostalgia nerve. I got the 2 man ship while my older brother got the Explorer. I just placed a backorder for the Explorer, but now I may have to buy another set as well to make the 2 man ship! I wish they just released the 2 man ship as well on its own.
487 (the 2-figure model) was actually released the year before in 1978. I got 487 for my 6th birthday and 497 for my 7th. Thanks for this video it really hits home for me. I'll be ordering the new version ASAP!
You should, it is really satisfying to build and the design is far superior to the originals thanks to many modern pieces. My first big ship was the 'starfleet voyager' so I missed out on these by a couple of years.
8:33 yeah, I was really hoping for a med. stone grey helmet and air tanks, too. They dropped the ball with that one. And where’s our green classic helmet for that Ideas set that came out in 2014?
Hi Chris yes nice one I only be getting one of the sets as I not collect classic space sets in the past but trying to collect the classic space mini figs and gathering parts to build sume to but for any classic space collector geting X3 of the set to do the other build is great thort.
Great set. Build al 3 versions, but just have 1 set, so at the end I have rebuild the big one. Price is very good, and not just 2022 good. Such a clever design as well. Loved to see all versions together. Well done.
Yeah, more rugged durable versions of the space stations from the 80s would’ve been amazing because that’s what I was trying to simulate with my daughter now so I’m trying to decide if I’m gonna spend $300 to get us basically three spaceships and then figure out some sort of space base.
Can you explain to me how the 2005-2006 sets were very unstable? I had a bunch back in the day and I can agree but I’d like a more detailed explanation. Thanks!
But late so doubt you'll see this but: Have you tried building the alt-928 spaceship shown in the 1982 Lego ideas book ? You don't get full instructions, only a few pix at various stages in the build. But there is enough there to figure things out, which I did over a couple of enjoyable days, with help from a magnifying glass. As for the 10497 set - could have been exponentially improved if (1) they'd included printed 918 and 924 bricks. (2) instead of 928 they had called it, like, 928*, to reflect its updatedness - and thus added 918* and 924* bricks. And (3) instead of the 2 red and 2 white specimen crew we had got some NEW coloured suited spacemen - could have even had these extra colours in addition to those 4 - New colours would have made people go crazy. ( I actually recently eBayed an Orange guy, a Brown guy (and space baby) and a Purple guy, plus the nurse with other space baby to look after Brown's kid, just need to get the actual set )
I have the set and unless you’re making the smaller models if you’re just using extra pieces from the set no. If you mean just the extra pieces and your already owned parts maybe but it’s up to you if the parts are good enough. Hope this helps a bit!
I build the main one but I only have the original 924. My wife disassembled it and I build the "new" 924. But I hate that there are no optional stickers! I put the 1x4 brick from the 70's in the new one and display the original from the other side...
Doesn't the yello w roof slide off on the original ship and which model were the yellow lower cockpit glass pieces on? Nice to see these again after 40 years. My nephew still has some of the original pieces of my old models in his Lego box😃
Someone pointed out that you could put a robot into a part in the back of one of the smaller ships. Haven't seen that in your review (had to zap a bit). Have you found that semi-hidden feature?
I was 10 when the Classic Space sets were introduced. The Galaxy Explorer was out of reach at the time, but I did have the 487 Space Cruiser. The 918 was not a US release (but it was in Canada) so it was a wish list set but not available to me. The new 10497 looks a great set, and is on the wish list. Great nod to the sets of my childhood.
Great video. Will you do another one comparing it specifically to Brick Artisan's version. Would also love to hear your thoughts on how it compares to Benny's spaceship Spaceship! SPACESHIP!!
You know technically the only thing this set was missing are just the Base plates. Tye original came with a little research base right? Well the new one has that middle area between the Cockpit and the Hanger. That's the Research area!! It's a Galaxy Explorer, it shouldn't need to come to a research station, the Research happens in the ship. It's out there exploring the Galaxy it doesn't have time to constantly come back to the outpost
"If you adjusted for inflation" ... If Lego had re-released the original set instead of the modernised version, no way would it be more expensive, even with that moon crater base plate.
yes I have the Original LL924 and LL918 and the 924 did have a forklift, I still have the pieces but the springloaded part snapped years ago. I let my kids play with that original lego for a few years but tis now been retired to a display shelf due to the brittleness of the original pieces
Wish they just sold each alternate version as a separate build. I can’t afford to buy three of em. I am on the hunt for the originals of my childhood now.

Your review is absolutely top notch!
Black air tanks as an easter egg turned out to be true with the return of Blacktron in 2023's GWP
They are all epic. Love bennys Spaceship too
Lego should have made different sizes like with the original.
More Classic Space! Also mold the old pieces please! Tailfins, tri directional jets, yellow trans plates etc...

This house... In an earthquake... I can't even imagine.
If you look at pieces per dollar, lego has kept the same price point since the original ship. Usually 10 pices per Dollar average.
Not when you adjust the original cost for inflation, which is the accurate way to compare old prices to new prices
Love your channel! Have you ever tripped and accidentally knocked over any sets? I did once (knocked over a my black knights castle).
