We've taken our cameras in pretty extreme conditions, and during the live premiere of our film Bluebird a common question we got asked was "how do you care for your camera in the cold?". So in this video I'm sharing some things to consider when taking your gear outside in the cold and how NOT to ruin your camera. There's also some shooting tips, as well as how you can keep yourself warm too!

It works for some people but I don't totally understand the need, besides that Peter's stickers just look cool. Batteries are already different on one side than the other. Why not just store charged batteries with the contacts down and dead ones with the contacts up?

Great tips Becki! I totally scared myself when I got my new canon r6 mkii, brought it down south for my honeymoon and the salty moist air caused my AF/MF and shutter buttons to stick... They're still slightly sticky to this day but thankfully work just fine. Never had problems in the cold though, other than battery management. I store all my batteries in a small pouch together with a hand warmer when I'm winter camping, one lasts a whole day keeping my batteries working great and then I don't have to carry them around with me while I'm gathering wood and working :)

The salty moist air is the stuff that freaks me out the most! Smart call on putting the hand warmer in the same bag as the batteries!

Great tips, I'm glad you mentioned keeping yourself warm too!
At the beginning of January, we had sunny weather (very rare in my area during winter), but it was -20°C, so while I was able to stay comfy during a walk myself, it made shooting almost impossible, both because of battery life and because I only had gloves that are not made for handling a camera. I gotta invest in that next.
P.S.: I also experienced very slow LCD behaviour and I wasn't sure if I'm tripping or if it's really because of the cold.

I live in northern Labrador and regularly shoot -20 to -30 C with my Fujifilm gear and following the main precaution of putting your cold camera in a camera bag and letting it warm up slowly to avoid condensation I’ve never had any issues.
And remember to take your memory cards out before going inside so you can view your footage immediately as your camera warms up in the bag.

The only tips that I could suggest, if camping out in cold weather are to sleep with your batteries in your sleeping bag.
And if you cook with Butane/Propane gas canisters while camping in the cold is to sleep with those canisters, detached from the cooker, in your sleeping bag. That way the fuel is warm enough to mix properly and burn efficiently while cooking in or close to subzero temperatures.
If you are filming in the cold or at night then maybe a USB lens warmer to keep condensation and dew away while filming or doing time lapses at night.
    Just a though. 😀

im in florida but still watched this for the tips! one tip in the cold (cus I used to shoot in cold weather) that I learned from a Benro rep was to try to use carbon fiber tripods in the cold. they're not going to stick to your fingers like aluminum if you have to bare hand a tripod leg in freezing temps and they dont respond the same way aluminum does as far as vibration/moisture etc in the cold too.

Great video! It’s truly impressive what the cameras can function in regarding cold temps. I’ve shot photos in ambient temps as cold as -20°F (canon 5d iv) and it took it like a champ. Another pro tip with batteries - go OEM. Never had an issue with a Canon LP-E6, but I’ve had issues with third party replicas. Your mileage may vary!
The thin-glove-inside-thicker-glove is a pro move too 👌

Hey guys, thanks for the great content! Super useful! I definitely found my old Canon 5D M2 to be sturdier in the cold and wet compared to my mirrorless R6. When I try shooting in the normal RDF my R6 doesn’t like it, that’s made me worried about cold and condensation.

I try to put the camera in a bag and close the bag just before I go inside from the cold and the condensions occurs on the outside of the bag. Just a short while later it is safe to open. I do that the with the laptop also. And the Rode Videomicro is a solid underwater microphone, don't ask me how I know.

Hello from Finland! I'd say modern mirrorless cameras generally handle winter conditions really well now, reliably shooting in -25, -30C is no big deal. So yeah keeping yourself warm is definately a big part, "There's no bad weather, only bad clothing"

  • @thisiseric
    @thisiseric 4 месяца назад

Word of warning to people shooting in wet conditions even with weather sealed bodies: even with flagship cameras there are some weak points. Ive never had my actual camera stop working from water damage but I have had the built in microphone as well as the electronic hot shoe both stop working after shooting for a client under niagara falls on the hornblower boats (maid of the mist for usa). So its still good to use those rain covers Becki shows here just as extra safety in heavy rain and not rest soley on weather sealing.
