I remember back in my skating days in the early 2000's, someone gave me a great tip. I was trying to ollie over a smallish skateboard stack, and he noticed I was concentrating too much on getting the front foot over. As soon as he said to focus on pulling your back foot as high as possible, I was jumping over people. I made that last bit up, but the rest is true. Vast improvement.
@@weonsbr Same here. Skated for maybe two years and never did a proper Ollie and had no one to show me. If it popped to the ground I assumed it was a fail and always tried to avoid it.
finally your right ear doesn't feel lonely and the audio level is ok! So glad you figured out how to use a mic the right way jonny! good luck with your ollies!
I missed the Monosound! nooot :P Jonny, question, I pull my 78,74 inch Ollie and the Heelflip like kick/ verialkickflip with the foot peak. I get very very high with this alian technology. But if i pull this way without using my heel, is it still a Heelflip?
Hey Jonny, just a little advice: I couldn´t learn how to ollie for a long three weeks because I didn´t really understand the pop. Then sometime, I saw a video of Tony Hawk explaining it, saying that you actually try to pop the tail down so it kind of "jumps" over its edge. That´s the fantastic "pop" noise. Once I had that down and understood that the tail should pop over the edge, I got the ollie down in two hours the next day and was happy as ever. Just a little tip, whenever I see these ollie videos they don´t really emphasize that, but I personally think it´s the aspect of it that matters most.
Hi Jonny, fellow Swiss here. You should try tu use some free audio edition software, like audacity for example. Just turn up the volume, maybe add compression, and try to get your volume to 0db. I personally like VirtualDj the best, it's visually so easy to understand. Otherwise, I really like your skateboarding, I hope you'll get more recognition soon. Not as a youtuber but as a professional athlete.
One thing to always remember when first learning to ollie: YOU have to bring the board off the ground. The board does not lift you off the ground. When I see people first learning to ollie they often appear to be thinking so much about foot placement and front foot movement that they seem to have forgotten you gotta jump. All the footwork ain't gonna mean diddly if you just smack your tail and slide your foot. It's an extremely unintuitive thing to do which is why it's so frustrating at times.
Exactly my problem when i was young. By watching people making very high jump I thought the pop of the deck were propulsing the rider. Complete mistake! A Ollie is a body jump first of all. Then you play with the bord to elevate it so it will follow your movement.
I just realised this the other day. Trying to get kickflips (still haven't, but close!). I was having trouble landing back on the board, until I finally came to the realisation that I was focused too much on the spin and I actually have to jump my ass up into the air and land on the damn thing. It sounds so obvious now.
Could you give me a tip. My problem is that I jump at least it feels like it but I weirdly only lift my knees. My upper body stays the same. I don't really know how to fix it.
@@NightsFenris try thinking of the thighs and calves differently. First you need to start in a low crouch position then extend your thighs to elevate your upper body into the air. Only after you start the “jumping “ motion can you use your calves to pop and flick
The trick, as with all things about skating, is to be relaxed. Once you're loose, you'll find everything considerably easier. It won't make you amazing, you still have to work at it but it'll make the process more fluid.

Here is a tip for anybody trying to get the ollie down. Its not so much as how hard you pop as it is the timing. Its all in the snap of the pop on your backfoot. You wanna spring up with it and not focus on putting too much pressure on that backfoot. Also dont be afraid to put that frontfoot further back than Johnny did in the video. Everybody is different and has diff foot positioning for every trick. Whatever works for you works. Just experiment and most of all have fun!

Your videos makes me want to start again after 11 years. I'm 28 now but i'm quite afraid of not being good at anything i've learned those years ago. :-(
Audio is perfect this time, and even when it isn't your videos are great
Your foot positioning was both informative and oddly hilarious.
Thank you sir for this kind of videos!!!!
I just got my board today!!
i love your tutorials they always have another concept and explain the stuff that no one else does i really thank you for the best tutorials
Possibly the best explanation video ever.
your killing it! I have more faith in my riding after watching your videos. if audio is the only thing to worry about in your content, your on a great path
I know I can ollie quite high when theres nothing in front of me, but once there is even a 2 inch obstacle, i choke.
feel you lmao
same 😹
for real tho
me too
Samee standing I got a boned out ollie one time that went up two feet but the second there’s something in front of me I barely get off the ground
You are like the nicest guy on earth Jonny.
Hey Jonny, how about you make a video about how you're editing your videos, especially the sound and then we'll help you with it? There should be some creative people in your fan base as well;) love your vids
Yeah I still have it turned up all the way and have to replay several parts to understand what he is saying.. and it's not the accent.
I could watch Jonny all day.
For 2 days I couldn't level my ollies, until i watched this video
Quick tip: something That helped me was to bring up that back foot more to go over stuff. It lifts the back truck so it doesn’t get stuck.
I like your tips! They're different than others I've seen. Definitely makes me want to practice!! :). I'll be sure to try ollieing your way!
Learning to skate has never been so much fun
your trick tips are very good man. very helpful and well explained!
I've found it helps to actively think about landing bolts and not on the tail with the back foot
I’ve never tried twisting my back foot before while I Ollie. Thanks for the tip bro
Perfection! Looks so easy, yet so hard. But once that's done...ur on ur way!
this helps a lot my ollie’s are decent but just aren’t clean and consistent i can ollie likr 4 stairs and stuff but this helped me get better ones 🔥
The most important part to do an ollie that nobody tells you is that you actually have to JUMP.
Pause at exactly :50 ...That looks so cool. You have a really good ollie, Jonny.
thank you, Jonny! It was amazingly helpful! :)
I remember watching this right when it came out. Now I have tres on lock, wow time flies
realy good Video mate !
i just started a year ago and i think i just landed my first Olli a couple of days ago.
but this video will help me massivly to get more into skateboarding
i am a Longboard rider tho :D
i would love to see more "how to do easy moves" videos like this
how to manual, Nosemanual, usw.
perfekt would be you on a longboard but hey.... i wouldn't mind if its even on a regular board, i think i can adopt a lot of things that will speed up my progress in boarding
cheers for all the ggod entertainment so far and keep on skating ! :)
I don’t think I’ve laughed hard at one of jonnys videos when he stopped and realized the board was backwards when doing the tutorial lol idk why cracked me up so much
third day in a row practicing this! wanna do it so badly! thx for the tips johhny
My ollies are definitely improving but now my left knee aches because I think I went skating too much :(
Next to Chris Cole, you’re the best Giger! I appreciate your insight tremendously 🤙🏽
I wish I had internet back in the 90s
Tweaked ollies to fakie are gnarly
I love tweaking my fakie Ollie..could be because I can do it way better than regular. Reg is tough!
Thanks man you help me a lot, you are a monster , I m your biggest fan in Brazil....thanks!!!
Watched half the video and already have a clear view on how to Ollie
it finally clicked, thank you so much johnny
Nice form Johnny, those are some nice looking olies.
I feel like the ability to jump and the speed at which you have to bring your feet up after you pop is an often overlooked part of ollies
Putting the ankle of my back foot in that position seriously terrifies me.
First I tried to Ollie while riding and I kinda got it, then I tried ollieing over a curb and I landed then it slid out from under me. It still felt soooo good tho
Two years later, still learning how to ollie well.
Jonny giger one of my favorite skaters persons and bloggers
The angles on this vid is just 💥💥💥💥💥
@@RUclipsHandle1244 That’s your opinion
Vielen vielen dank Jonny! War immer unsicher wo ich meine Füße haben soll. Werd deine Tipps gleich morgen probieren. Vllt wirds ja mein erster Ollie ;)
Can you make a Backside 180 trick tutorial please? I have the trick, but it's more of a pivot style with less pop.
I’ll admit I’m not super good at them, but check out this video: 5 Tricks to Learn After the Ollie: Part 2 (Skateboard Progression For Beginners) ruclips.net/video/72_aB5Ie3U0/видео.html Third trick in is the backside 180. Let me know if this helps, or if you’re still stuck!
Your Ollie look like side kicks. Very nice
Nice video! I like this tutorials so much :)
Your ollies look dope man!
Also a really helpful tip I figured out was to think of sliding your front foot up farther than the nose, as if you were going to ollie north. When I do this, my front foot still stays on the board, but my ollie gets so much more boned.
