I’m nearly 39, i can still ollie 4 boards easy, 5 on a good day. I ollied 7 boards back when I was younger. I don’t have the best of Health. my body took a good beating over the years. Been skating again now for almost 2 years. Weekend sessions only, when I find the time. Happy with the progress. These tutorials make all the difference. Wish I had you tube 20-25 years ago. There basically wasn’t much to skate back in those day’s. So we skated flatground and streetspots a lot. That’s how my ollies got quite good fast. Can’t wait to hit the skateparks again.
Good for you! I am 39 now and I used to skate when I was 20~21, but I broke my color bone while I re-skated 5 years ago, and I cannot step on the board again. Wish I have the courage like you.
Welcome back! I just started skating again less than a year ago. I skated from 11 to 14 yrs old then had to stop for basketball, picking it back up at 34. Loving the Giger tutorials. It would have been amazing to have this kind of resource when I was younger, although figuring out a trick for yourself is incredibly rewarding as well.
I have a feeling many of our generation are having this itch again to start skating. I am 36, skated between my 14 and 25. Stopped skating because my knees were really bad and becoming parent. 11 years later and having a knee surgery a few years ago i bought a new setup. Biggest issue is i am a major pussy now, but i have fun again.
@@thierry-cannot-aim Yeah, I'm 33 and when I watch his videos, it reminds me how much fun skating was (I skated when I was 18-20), but in my country skateboarding is very frowned upon, and to see someone in his 30's skating is "pure blasphemy" :P Not to mention that there aren't many skaters now as there were back then.
Biggest lightbulb moment for me learning to ollie recently was that in order to pop, you actually have to bounce the board off the ground. Practicing popping the tail down and picking up the board is almost like the first step.
When I first tried them. I learned to get the board off the ground like 5in without popping. So when I learned you actually have to bounce to board. I got a 12in ollie in like 2hr.
This and JUMP. Pop the board down hard then jump as high as you can. Of course this sounds so much easier than it is, but once you process it you can get some really good height. Same with kickflips (and everything else) as well.
Hi person reading this, don't quit skating! It may be hard, but it was 6 months of skating every single day from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm for me to learn how to ollie. I've been skating for about a year and a half now, and can already tre flip! Never ever ever give up! Keep trying, and you will become amazing! Keep pushing, I will if you will, Goodbye, and go conquer your dreams!
dude that's a lot of practice. a bit too much. rest ffs 😂 anyway, I learned to ollie over a board in 3 weeks with 1-2 hours session per day (most of the session was gossiping about games lol). if you follow the tips in the video, don't forget to not push too hard (don't bruteforce your way into a trick. break it down and start small. understand the physics and how it feels. try. analyze. retry), have fun and rest (have good night sleeps. let your mind and body assimilate). You will progress well. If you are too tired, stop! Most injuries happen when your mind and body are too fatigue and your reaction time has dropped significantly.
Once you've got the basics of the ollie down. Pop and lift your back foot as high as possible. Get it right up there like you going to knee yourself in the chin!! The front foot will naturally do its thing once the muscle memory is there.
@@commentcontrol7187 Maybe try pushing your front foot forward a bit more as you pop. So front foot forward and back foot as high as you can. when the timing is right the board just snaps up and sticks to your feet. Practice practice and never give up. The reward from skateboarding is unparalleled.

One of my happiest memories. Me, 14 at skateboard camp. Last day of camp: board Ollie contest. I did 5, almost 6 but never pulled it off. 7 is impressive indeed. When I was learning to skate I wish I had access to you on the internet.
After having landed my last kickflip 10 years ago, you my friend have shown me that skating is fun again. Seeing you land tricks despite expressing a fear of big ramps really helped. Best ollie tutorial. My foot position was bad and I didn't slide up and down with my front foot, so my ollies were very low (only 1-2 inches). However after watching this video I fixed my foot position and tried the tips you showed and I got almost half a foot! Thank you for the tips!
I’m a PT, so I know what I’m talking about, it’s not the subconscious or autonomous nerviosa system or your muscles is your MOTOR CORTEX, there are three parts of your motor cortex, one of them is responsable for “saving the file” and remembering how you move and do it automatically, that’s why it takes a lot of time to master something, first takes a lot of neurons and energy to do it consciously but once it’s saved in the supplementary motor cortex is like nothing even with your eyes closed, your muscles have memory to the kind of exercise you do for example if you skate a lot you have a lot of power in a single move for example Ollie 7 boards but you can’t do a marathon because your muscles weren’t built to do that.
Man thank you for explaining that you have to jump when you pop !! To many people teaching these videos leave that factor out leaving people to think they are doing something wrong becuz they are trying to pop and slide with no jump and nothing happen!! You and Kyro legit the only ones I’ve seen mention the jumping factor!!!
When I was about 9 years old me and my friend were messing around for the first time... we were trying to Ollie. After about 100 tries I suddenly nailed the timing just right... I flew up like 10 inches! Best ollie I ever did! Haven’t Ollied since...
Great video. Practiced 10-15 minutes every day for the last week and went from 8 inches to almost two feet. Just have to concentrate on landing straight which is tough with the high ones.
I’ve never heard someone say not to put the back foot all the way on like that, I’m definitely changing my foot stance and trying this out! Much appreciated Jonny!
I have struggled with a weak ollie for a long time this is by far the best tutorial. I think it's my foot positioning that is the problem. I'm going to adjust my back foot to the middle of the tail and improve all my skating.
Man! Definitely brought back good memories when I seen this video, in 2003 or so just a couple years into skating ( as a 7th grade skid hoodlum!) when I did a 7 deck Ollie as well! Just 1 time though, but good enough! Still can't believe it happened even to this day! Great video man thanks! 👍
A big lightbulb moment for getting my ollies to improve was focus more on bringing my front foot up rather than forward. I would always worry about my board not leveling out so I thought I had to push my foot forward but dragging more up helps the board level better and once its level then push forward. Catching the board in the pocket with your front foot also happens much more naturally when you drag your foot more vertically which helps control the board a lot better + you drag your board up and ollie higher. For me this was the final thing to tie my ollie together. It took me about 6 weeks to get my ollies to a point where I felt like I could do them properly and each time there was major improvement came from a big lightbulb moment in each step so don't get discouraged when you think you figured it out just to encounter another problem. Don't be scared to try ollies up and down different things as well it will give you a sense of accomplishment and help you focus on different movements in the ollie.
Awesome tutorial! I've been covering the tail with my back foot WAY too much. I thought the ball of the foot needed to be at the center of the tail; thought it'd make the pop more stable(?) looks like I need to be placing it a bit farther back so that the TOES are lined up with the middle :/ I'll have to try this next time:] Thanks JonnyG!/|\
i was trying to ollie and didn't know what I was doing wrong, i had my balance and front foot placement right just didn't get enough pop, this video p much helped me and I had my foot placement not at the edge the way you have it. I tried it and it gave me a big ol pop and Im v happy I can do an ollie now. Thanks
Johny this video has helped me to take a deep breath, and wonder why it was so hard to make Ollies while moving... When you say, "If you feel comfortable with this position, DON'T do it"... Guess what! Haha that helped me a lot with the balance, and figured out the whip movement of the leg to the toes! Now I feel more at jumping ! Thanks a lot bro! Saludos desde Chile! 🇨🇱
I did waist high ollies over objects as a youngster which is about 7 decks. I remember when trying to ollie really high I didn't think about the ollie technique anymore, I was too busy jumping to get the height.
This is amazing Jonny I love seeing a master of a skill such as yourself sharing the very basic building blocks of their skill with such grace, thanks man!
The jump and pop are actually two separate phases. The slow motion at 4:40 shows this. In the first phase (jump), push both feet to get yourself off the board. Since it is normal to apply the same amount of pressure on both feet, your front foot should be furthest from the rear wheel so as to keep the board on the ground. This is crucial because the board must transfer your jumping power to the ground for you to go up. Action equals reaction. In the second phase (pop) you lift your front foot so that the board can rotate, which is initiated by using the remaining energy in your back leg to fully stretch it. During this phase, your front foot should not hold the board down, this will result in a loss of momentum of the board. It should barely touch the board to guide it through the air. Because energy equals force times distance (upward) and force equals mass times acceleration, it all comes down to acceleration. The faster you can jump and pop the board, the higher you go. The perfect ollie is the result of an ideal energy distribution between the two phases (jump and pop) that get you and your board airborne respectively.
This is what really helped me. Find a surface that dosent roll(grass or carpet), and a place where you can hold onto something while standing up. In my case I held onto the foot of my bed frame and kept doing ollies until I could ollie up to the height of my bed while keeping the board steady under me.
Cheers buddy! Much appreciated. Crazy, I’ve been skating for a little while and hadn’t noticed my back foot a bit more over center and can’t wait to try this foot position/ stoked to gain height!
THE ONE THING THAT HELPED. ME: lookup aaron kyro’s frontside 180 tutorial. in there he explained the pop from extending your foot from the ankle. a lot of people jump off the ground mid pop. this is wrong as you should jump off the board and extend your foot down, popping the board up, at the very last moment before you jump off the board. i used to pop and jump off the tail while my tail was touching the ground. it feels very sequential: jump off the board, then extend your back foot toes down causing the tail to pop
@@Flammable Just that my feet are kinda weird, I already twisted an ankle like 5 times and not even once at skating ! My problem is that I can do it while holding onto a bar or something ( tried with shopping cart xD), but when I try to do it while moving or even when still it doesn't want to come out.
Jonny, thank you for this video. I love to watch your more advanced videos for entertainment and inspiration but as a beginner I really appreciate this in depth video about such a basic, foundational technique. Cheers
I think it's important to notice that after the pop, the front foot starts the sliding movement, and it actually pulls the board diagonally upwards and forwards, instead of just doing a forwards and downwards movement to level out the board. It's possible to see this at 9:28. This pulls the board up and is essential for very high ollies
Hey! I am not a skatboarder anymore, but started doing some basic flatland skatboarding due to the quarantine after 20 years of absence. The most I’ve ever managed to jump over was 5 decks. Landed on the bolts, but broke my board. Which was less then a week old. 😢 I was so pissed. At that time I was still in high school and buying a new deck wasn’t cheap. To this day I don’t understand what went wrong. I never again tried jumping over more than 4 decks. 😬
I'm over 60 something years old and have been skateboarding over 50 years. I could do low Ollies in the 80's and tried to relearn them in 2020. I practiced everyday while holding onto a chest high rail for about half an hour for about a month. All l accomplished was getting tennis elbow pains from holding the rail and Ollieing. I gave up trying. Now it is June 2023 and I still don't do them, but I did have a great Go Skate day at Kohala, Hawaii with over 100 skaters rolling down the closed main highway for about a mile to the roots Skateboard park for the Big islands once a year Skate , bike event.
Thank you for being a really good teatcher. Its pretty cool that i can have great skaters like you teach me some of your techniques, and all accecable free, what a great dude you are.
I've been skating for forever and I can do some flip tricks but my Ollie's have always sucked. Then I realized I just need to set higher and higher obstacles to actually practice and I've probably doubled my height in a year. Amazing lesson btw
At the height of my skill I couldn’t break 5 on flat. Seven is nuts. Nice job. For me, Ollie’s UP stuff was how I started, at first into grass on my driveway up a slanted curb. One can also try Ollie’s over arbitrary chalk marks on the ground for the lowest level of difficulty. Finally, make sure you have a bit of speed. Not tons at first, but not creeping along either.
just wanna say that your thumbnail game is really strong, especially compared to other 'how to' skateboard channels! makes me wanna watch your videos every time! :D
Man i love these videos. Back in the days i couldnt skate for shit, in like 3 sessions (last i skated was probably 10 years ago) i've learnt some boneless variations, ollie better, drop in, pump, and this last weekend finally rock to fakie. I never felt like i skated before, but just learning to pump in a medium size ramp listening to some sweet punkrock and just ride, thats such a great feeling.
Awesome vid Jonny... as are all your others, especially from the POV of an older skater (i.e. myself) who can appreciate the tech wizardry of Rodney - which you are doing an awesome job of replicating! I'm now 45 and about to embark on a hammer programme of trying to regain some of my former steez and I think I'll need to retrain my ollie some (!!) so this video is perfect. Needless to say I'll be wearing baggy jeans and éS Schemes while I practice just to keep it OG... the '90s live on!! ✌😁 ❤
Your slowmo helped me figure out my timing for higher ollies 💕 i used to pop too close to the obstacle and i thought it was because i couldn't ollie high fast enough 🥺🥺
Great video! I am 43 and will not start skating again after an almost 30 years break...btw I could not jump that high without a board:-) But I still enjoy watching skatevideos!
Literally a legend of pop teaching the world. Giger, I can get some decent height but it comes with a sacrifice... when ever I go for higher pop, I turn frontside almost 90 degrees.
One tip it seems is often overlooked is tucking your knees up! That stumbled me so much, so many times if I didn't land a trick it was because I wasn't tucking enough. Practice jumping and tucking them up to your chest like you see Jonny doing here at 7 boards (if you have a trampoline it's easier).
what about 8? ;)

You and Kyro legit the only ones I’ve seen mention the jumping factor!!!
Why would anybody thumb down this video? This guy is a legend! Thanks for the video J
I just started yesturday and I can Ollie 7boards now! Thanks Jonny!
You are my favorite skater of all TIME
Wow! One of your best videos!!! Thank you, Jonny!
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘😭😭😭😭😭🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘Another piece of evidence why Jonny is the Top of technical street skating!!!!!!!!!!😎😎😎😎
Just now getting my ollie consistent and good, using this video to help clean them up and get a little more off the ground.
I just got back into skateboarding after 6 years so watching this actually gives me more info to help me get my Ollie down!!
There are a lot of great tricks out there, but not many that look as good as a really popped ollie! Jonny has a nice one!
@Johnny, you've got one of the best channels around, bro!
Back-foot position helped me a lot. Thank you!
I literally was taught wrong all my life haha. I might pick up skating again and try Jonny's technique.
Jonny we need more trick tips like this! Start tutorial videos on everything from basics up to advanced tricks plz
i was trying to ollie and didn't know what I was doing wrong, i had my balance and front foot placement right just didn't get enough pop, this video p much helped me and I had my foot placement not at the edge the way you have it.
You have a great teaching pqce and voice. Vwry calm and clear. Very good teaching. Thank you.
made it over a parking block with an Ollie today. Hope to get over 2 boards soon. Just started in February 2020. Thanks johnny
If I would have had these video years ago when I was learning to ollie.... That first 5 minutes is golden
I spoke to my friend about ollie'ing a manny pad and saw you uploaded this video! Fantastic timing!
Omw jonny I literally fractured my ankle ollieing over 4 boards couldn't you come out with this sooner😭😭😭💔
Sounds painful dude, get well soon!
This is what really helped me. Find a surface that dosent roll(grass or carpet), and a place where you can hold onto something while standing up. In my case I held onto the foot of my bed frame and kept doing ollies until I could ollie up to the height of my bed while keeping the board steady under me.
Awesome!! Could you do a tutorial how to kickflip ? Please :)
diegoveloper he’s done a bunch of kick flip videos search up johnny giver kickflip
Heelflip please
maybe i'm gonna do one soon :)
Cheers buddy! Much appreciated. Crazy, I’ve been skating for a little while and hadn’t noticed my back foot a bit more over center and can’t wait to try this foot position/ stoked to gain height!
you notice the 596 likes and 0 dislikes, thats because it's just great content.

THANK U !!!!! the problem i have is that my foot stays on the tail a little too long so it doesn’t leave
Jonny you kill it every time, clear, concise. Makes me want to go skate
I gave up on trying to ollie with my crooked feet but maybe I'll give it another shot, thanks for the tips !
wym crooked feet
@@Flammable Just that my feet are kinda weird, I already twisted an ankle like 5 times and not even once at skating !
My problem is that I can do it while holding onto a bar or something ( tried with shopping cart xD), but when I try to do it while moving or even when still it doesn't want to come out.
@@bingolingo1620 need to push more and not ollie then ollie
Jonny, thank you for this video. I love to watch your more advanced videos for entertainment and inspiration but as a beginner I really appreciate this in depth video about such a basic, foundational technique.
Cheers
I think it's important to notice that after the pop, the front foot starts the sliding movement, and it actually pulls the board diagonally upwards and forwards, instead of just doing a forwards and downwards movement to level out the board. It's possible to see this at 9:28. This pulls the board up and is essential for very high ollies
That is the episode I really need! I have been wondering how to work on my ollies for quite some time
100% one of the best flat ground skaters around !!
10:29 Hello this is Jonny Giger im a professional skateborder from Switzerland Mauntains Area

Thank you for being a really good teatcher. Its pretty cool that i can have great skaters like you teach me some of your techniques, and all accecable free, what a great dude you are.
Just got a new board, so now Im going to try this in my garden while stuck at home, thanks Jonny 😊
Same tho Quarantine Skating xD
I've been skating for forever and I can do some flip tricks but my Ollie's have always sucked. Then I realized I just need to set higher and higher obstacles to actually practice and I've probably doubled my height in a year.
Amazing lesson btw
So close to getting my Ollie consistent, this video was right in time!
Jonny, youre so humble, man. You've got to tell us to like and subscribe with a little more confidence man, your content is dope!
That video will help me get back to skateboarding
Jonny, this is a masterclass, thank you 👊🏼
Your slowmo helped me figure out my timing for higher ollies 💕 i used to pop too close to the obstacle and i thought it was because i couldn't ollie high fast enough 🥺🥺
Great tip! Finally ollied up a curb today!
Great video! I am 43 and will not start skating again after an almost 30 years break...btw I could not jump that high without a board:-) But I still enjoy watching skatevideos!
Love your vids Jonny.
King of skate 👑
Literally a legend of pop teaching the world. Giger, I can get some decent height but it comes with a sacrifice... when ever I go for higher pop, I turn frontside almost 90 degrees.
Keep your upper body aligned w the board, learn to keep your body sideways, even though you'll naturally start to turn to keep you from falling
Last week have the 4 done ✅ happy about this 🤓👌🏼
Trying out my first ollie today - so stoked! :)
Thank you for your videos, I feel like they help so much, you're videos inspire me to keep trying
Siiiiiick. For my ollie tutorial, I ollied over a regular-sized chair. But I think 7 boards is probably a little higher
Great skateboarder... even better teacher! Tks for the tips.
