And about the 'natural tan' thing: wish people would get more into "natural skin colour is best" instead of either wanting to make it lighter or darker. Youngsters are so lucky these days because the correct information is finally out there about the damage UVA and UVB rays can cause. When I was a teenager the only concern was protection from sunburn, getting a "safe" tan thru use of sunscreen. Now we know that no tan is a safe tan, a tan is simply a reflection of permanent sun damage. 🌱

    • @laurieparis2203

      @Jackson true, but they also used lead-based powders on their skin to get the appearance of whiteness.

    • @laurieparis2203
      @laurieparis2203 3 года назад +2

      @Jackson I think it's a little more complicated than that. Pre-industrial age, white skin was a sign that you didn't have to work for outside for a living, which most people had to do being an agrian society. So untanned skin became something desirable, a status symbol. But once everyone was inside working, getting a tan with something that only people who had leisure time could indulge in, and tans became desirable. Everyone went out there and tanned, tanning salons became a thing. Nowadays we know that 90% of skin aging is as a result of sun exposure, and skin cancers as a result of too much exposure to UV light. So many of us choose to protect our skin, from UV damage.
      The suntan lotion industry didn't disappear... it simply switched their marketing from lotions that would give you a deep dark tan, to lotions that will protect you from that! 😊

      @@laurieparis2203 !! right, I feel like this should be mentioned often. I don't know why this /good/bad/ splitting bothers me in videos sometimes. Is the sun evil? So in a post-industrial age with speedy travel, etc. does that also mean some people are in the wrong geographic places? Or is sun damage also exasperated by changes in the ozone and climate change in general? and more stuff too, like questions about the solar system in general, maybe. Anyway, I just liked your comment! It was nice to scroll through it while seemingly reading the same type comment over and over again lol

      @@Luke-mm4fy hi Luke! You can't avoid the Sun completely, you can only moderate how much of it you expose yourself to. Seriously there's nothing more uplifting than a beautiful sunny day, that's because sunlight increases serotonin in the brain. UVB light creates vitamin d in our skin out of cholesterol.
      But many of us prefer to get our vitamin d from pills, thus avoiding the downsides of sun exposure. It's not just the vanity issues of wrinkles, sunspots and sagging skin, it's also the reality of skin cancer, and cataracts.

    I think what gets me the most is how dark he actually is with a tan. Considering how he's a caucasian male from the UK, you'd assume he'd be quite light skinned, when not having a tan. I have middle eastern heritage so I do tan more easily than people who are skin type 1-2, but even for me, to get to that color is intense. So for him that's... a lot of sun damage.

I just wish that there was this type of information available when I was young. Sunscreens didn’t show up until after I’d already graduated from college (max SPF was 15) and even then they only protected from burning and did nothing for UVA protection. Luckily by then I’d pretty much given up on going out in the sun because it was too painful. But I know that I still have a lot of damage from my childhood years and those terrible burns I would get playing outside.

    I love your gentle professional approach with just a sprinkle of shade here and there. “The gwyneth Paltrow application method” 😂
