If I could double like I would! I'm Aussie too and I wish they were never invented. So thankful they're illegal and yet people always comment at work how they want to get a tan from the sun!! Gosh Aussie still don't learn even though we have a lot health campaigns to stay out of the sun and get regalar check-ups. I am a big fan Dr Dray :) Keep filming!!!
Tanning beds are terrible and dangerous, however I have to mention many years ago I had a severe case of psoriasis all over my body. My doctor suggested uv treatment, now the treatment machine used for treatment very small and considering the amount of psoriasis not to mention private areas...I ended up going to a tanning bed for short amount of time and over the course of a few days. The results were swiftly observed and the flare went away. UV is recommended for my type of psoriasis, tanning beds are bad but I have to admit it saved my hide that time 😊
@@xmx005 Yes I totally believe what you are saying. I also met a guy who had psoriasis on his belly and he would lay in the sun shirtless because he said it helped his skin. Also I saw a trial run by a dermatologist on TV using UV light to treat stress. So in controlled doses of UV lamp exposure by a Dr in a hospital can reduce patient stress and actually improve recovery time so they leave the hospital sooner. It was highlighted that patients may not get enough UV exposure because they can't leave the hospital. Interestingly enough only a small area on the arm was enough to induce relaxation and stress reduction.
I worked in a salon that had sunbeds. One of our clients got skin cancer from using the beds. She was naturally dark skinned so don't be fooled into thinking you are just at risk with fair skin !!
Love the history of self tanning. The whole tanning phenomenon is interesting. It used to be a status symbol to have very fair skin because it ,supposedly, indicated that you where wealthy enough that you didnt have to do outdoor labor. Then after WWII , tanning became a statement that you were so well off that you had leisure time to spend on the beach or traveling to sunny places. Maybe tanning will go out of fashion again. Cheers!
In many countries it’s still a status symbol to have fair skin. Unfortunately, it’s often tied to or creates racism, as those with naturally darker skin are seen as lower class. I’m hoping we can totally detach status and attractiveness from skin tone/color, and instead just push for sun protection no matter what.
Tanning won’t go out of fashion until the fashion and beauty industry stops using tan models. I don’t care if they have real tans, or if they are fake tans, or if it’s just a photo shopped tan - it still sends a message.
I have a client who, no matter how hard I try to educate her, still uses tanning beds. She truly feels that it makes her look and feel healthy and there's nothing I can say to sway her. I gave up trying to tan in jr high when I realized I would only ever burn. And bc burns are ugly and painful, I embraced my extreme paleness. I tried fake bake, but it's a lot of upkeep, and tan skin just doesn't suite my esthetic, nor my profession. Now, many years later, I see the friends from my teenage years on fb and they are still tan, and I look 15 years younger than they do. Sometimes it's shocking we're the same age. I get made fun of for the rashguards, copious amounts of spf, umbrellas and the fact I avoid sun like a vampire, but I think that's why vampires have eternal youth. Lol
Weezy Breezy I think you misread, I said I look 15 years YOUNGER than my friends, not older. Lol I'm an esthetician and I can tell they've not done any cosmetic procedures or really any spf over the years. My mom sees them around town and always tells me I should send them a note w skincare tips. Lol I've not ventured into botox/fillers either, so I totally attribute the vast difference in our appearances to my vampire ways lol As for the people with in home tanning beds, I can't even comprehend that. Hopefully no ill affects will come from it. Good for you for embracing your paleness! It's amazing how good your skin can be when you care for it and let it be how it's supposed to be. 🙂
I've never used a tanning bed, but I use to always tan. I've gladly switched to fake tanning. It's a lot of maintenance, but compared to the hours I spent in the sun to get a real tan versus the 5 minutes application of my fake tan, the fake tan saves so much more time. My cousin who is the same age as me goes to the tanning bed once a week and I can see her skin changing drastically especially on her hands and she is only 21! She wouldn't listen to me if I told her to load up on SPF.
If I'm not mistaken, tanning beds can actually become an addiction as the release endorphins through the UV bulbs. Personally, it's very hard for me to get a sunburn thanks to my genetics but since starting to watch Dr Dray I too have adopted a vampiric perspective towards the sun (sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, umbrellas, the whole nine yards).
I used to use tanning beds and now regret it having a mom who died from complications from skin cancer. And it wasn't even melanoma. I have tried to work hard to repair the damage I have done and now visit my dermatologist every year for a skin check. Thank you for spreading your message about the damage of using tanning beds. Skin cancer is serious and isn't taken seriously enough for its life altering effects!
In high school my best friend loved to go to tanning beds with other friends, but would never invite me. At the time it hurt my feelings, but now I consider myself pretty fortunate I've never been in one!
Which one do you use? I have a lot of spider veins on my legs that I am very self concious about. i ciuld use this on the rare occasions that I wear something short.
Rose I like Jergens because it's reasonably priced and it has Dark Shades. It doesn't cover it completely but it cover it enough where it's not blatantly noticeable only you will notice it
Great topic! It's like having a dermatologist hang out with you at home. I love when you give a history about ingredients or products, knowledge is power. Thank you Dr. Dray!
I watched some youtuber a while ago go through their whole regimen for putting it on their whole body. It literally took all day....the things people do for beauty. Waaaay too much work for me.
M Greenwood a great way to do it is to shower/shave/tan before bed, then let the tan develop while you’re sleeping & do a quick rinse off in the morning 😉
Thank you Dr Dray! So informative as always! Growing up my mom always told me that tan skin was good, and encouraged sun bathing and tanning beds 😫 10 years ago I learned the truth about tanning beds and haven’t been in one since. I’m happy to report that I’m not repeating the fatal mentality with my own daughter. Last week at summer camp another girl commented on her white cast from her sunscreen and her response “Well at least I’m protected from the sun!” Boom, Baby! 💥
Adulting with Alyssa that’s awesome! It’s amazing how society as a whole is so crazed with skincare and all these products that do nothing. But when I go to reapply sunblock throughout the day people think it’s weird. No bitch, it’s weird that you spent $150 on a serum....
Ugh, my parents were the same way. They never put sunscreen on us and I am paying the price...physically and financially for it. I have needed 5 IPL's and still doing fraxel to rid myself of sun spots. Its really all so preventable. It's like vaccines. Just do it !
I also tanned in tanning bed and sunbathed up until I was 50ish . Since 2001 I have had 8 or 9 surgeries to remove melanoma from the Vulva. I no longer have the vulva lips. Yesterday I had surgery again for 3 spots there this time. I have not tanned or sunbathed since the first surgery but it keeps coming back. I only share this to maybe save someone from going thru what I have. Why it keeps coming back the doctors don't have a answer for that. Believe me when I say IT IS NOT WORTH IT. I even have friends that say I am darker complected than you or I only tan for some color before tanning outside. Worth the risk??????
I was wondering how you discovered your spots and what they looked like. I have spots that might be questionable but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Especially "down there" and I haven't found a lot of information on spots in that area.
Nancy so brave of you to come forth with your story, it is not in vain, it's really shocked me in a good way, I hope your on the mend now and end up cancer free❤💕
Interesting that some would tan that area considering how sensitive it is. Wouldn’t it be like tanning ones tongue. I hope you are doing well. Quite a tragic story.
I just learned so much. Who knew tanning was addictive! Knowing that in addition to sun tanning beds being legal in combination with the US not offering the most advanced uva/uvb sun protection is a grave disservice. Providing this education is so important. Thank you so much for arming us with valuable info and tools.
I am home today from my 2nd melanoma removal, 3 more to go! So I know better now to not tan and haven’t for years! I do enjoy a little self sunless tanning though! So glad you did this! Wish my parents had been informed of better spf practices growing up! And kept me out of the tanning bed!
I appreciate you giving a supportive word to those of us who have used tanning beds -- move on and don't beat yourself up. Tanning beds have been around for years before we knew the damage they would deliver. I innocently used them 30 years ago many many times through the years. I take really good care of my skin now so my skin is soft but I do have sun spots and one basel cell carcinoma, last week had another biopsy that fortunately came out negative. Sometimes I feel like I have a time bomb ticking away inside of me, wondering when the worst is going to happen. But as you say move on!
I used to think self-tanning was silly... until the pandemic hit. I'm already a light-medium shade but the pandemic and staying indoors for two years made me so much lighter and just PALE. I bought a self-tanning lotion this week and it sounds silly but it has made me feel a lot more confident. I also like that it's a lot safer than going out in the hot sun or going in an uncomfortable tanning bed. Right now because it's still winter I use a "Light to Medium" lotion, but in the summer I'll probably get "Medium to Dark" since that's how I naturally tan (you should see my pictures from when I was a kid lol).
Sing it sister on the fake tan! I love mine. Just applied a layer yesterday for first time in ages as we're in the middle of winter here in NZ and I love the slight glow it gives my otherwise pale skin 🤗
One of your best videos! I’ve been in love with a “healthy” tan since I started swimming competitively at age 8, then as a lifeguard, then living in CA, escalating to tanning beds (your explanation of the opioid effect explains a lot!) in my early 40s. Friends nagged me about the beds, so I quickly quit them. But, I then became a self tanning addict. That was better for my skin, but the psychological issue remained. Finally, I moved to the East coast where sun wasn’t as prominent and went back to being a “white” girl again. The color of my skin and it’s mine! 😊 It’s soooooo much better; less time, money and hassle and I’m (mostly) cured of the emotional need to look “good” with a tan. Great video. Thank you!
You are such an amazing source of information. Everything I've always wanted to know but had to piece it together myself by trawling the net. I wish my doctors would take the time to explain more, it's just all so interesting. So a big Thank You!
You are amazing. I'm a physician and feel like I am getting a second specialty in dermatology from your videos. I take notes because of the way you explain things so well. Thank you always. I will keep spreading the word about your channel
I remember tanning salons in the 80s and 90s telling everyone tanning beds were the safe way to tan. I was tanning several times a week when I was a teen. I haven't tanned in many years but I do worry about the damage that has already been done.
Same goes for me. My mom had a tanning bed at home which i - during my teens -used every other day since i thought it would "help" with acne. In fact, looking back at it now i probably had an addiction. I wish i had known what i now know...
For me it took place in late 80s in sweden when i was 15 all the way to the mid 90s. I'm a quite light skinned freckeled person who burn quite easily so his was extremely bad and damaging. I wish my mother had known better than to allow me to to this. I'm however happy that younger people seem to be alot wiser these days - thanks to advocates such as Dr Dray!
OMG wow I can’t believe this...I mean I do but wow I’m shocked at the tan addiction. I’ve heard of it but didn’t know it was real. Super excited I stopped tanning years ago. Definitely going to spread this information to my 16 yr old daughter.
Dr. Dray, Thank you for informing your viewers of how dangerous tanning beds are. In the late 80's tanning beds were very popular. This resulted in my diagnosis of skin cancer last year. Cancer caused many unexpected complications. I do want to say many people misunderstand that all skin Cancers have the potential to become complicated, disfiguring as well as deadly. I myself, was surprised to find out how disfiguring skin cancer could be. I was also surprised by the need for multiple surgeries. Involving multiple specialist. It makes me sad to know I could have prevented this disfiguring and deadly disease. No one likes to hear about these things but knowledge is power. I wish I had the knowledge. I never want anyone to experience the trauma skin cancer causes. I am so thankful you emphasize how important sunscreen is and how deadly tanning beds are. Thank you thank you, thank you!🌈 🧡
As a former tanner, even when I was doing it, I knew it was bad...but damn, nothing looked as good as “sun kissed” skin. I loved how it made me look. I did so much tanning that now if I get any sun, I get white spots, I suppose they are areas where I have totally destroyed the melanin in my skin. What really bothered me, is that even once the beauty industry started admitting how bad it was, models in magazines and Victoria’s Secret and such were STILL always tan. It’s a mixed message. My sister in law is “proud” of her suntanned children, because it means, I suppose, that they are well off enough to spend a lot of time at the beach in the summer. What scares me is that my ten year old niece has two large dark patches on one of her cheeks, that show up after the summer when her tan is fading. It took me decades of sun abuse to get those dark spots. What is going on that a kid is getting them so young? I used sunless tanners. It’s not the same. I can spot a sunless tanner tan from 10 miles away. The stuff turns your clothes orange. I think I’d rather just appreciate my pale skin. And I don’t think people’s attitudes about real sun tanning are going to change until the beauty industry stops promoting tan skin by using tanned models.
Now there are self tanners that don't make you look orange. I also had white spots on my skin once but I think it was because I used to apply tea tree oil and it made my skin photosensitive. It can also be tinea versicolor.
Fantastic information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this topic. I am going to force my husband to watch this, he was a child of the 70's and still insists on rocking the tan.
There was a very well publicised case here in Australia about 12 years ago of Claire Oliver, a young woman in her mid 20s who died from melanoma after frequent use of solariums. Due to her brave speaking out prior to her death, the industry here was basically ended, thank god - they are now banned in most states. But horrible this poor girl had to die in order for this legislation to be enacted.
You are a wealth of useful information! I never and I mean never buy or use any skincare product without checking in to see if you have a video! Thank you so much Dr Dray for always guiding me in the right direction!
I love my jergens insta tan. I use it only from now through September, one to two times a week just to give myself a little bit of color because I am very fair and use alot of Sun screen everyday. I want to look like I enjoyed the nice summer sun without harming my skin. It's a lot of work but I love it.
This is so great to know! I have contact dermatitis, and I've been trying to go makeup free for the most part. It's been verrrry difficult, but I've recently bought Clarins' Radiance-Plus Golden Glow Booster, which is a light tanning oil for the face, and hopefully it'll help my insecurities around a bare face. I found it on my ACDS list of acceptable products for my sensitivities, patch tested it, and the few times I've tried it on my face have been successful.
I am "pasty by choice." I can't seem to use self tanners because I break out with white itchy bumps on my legs. I can remember in college I was actually given a prescription to clear up the bumps. My legs turned red in addition to the white bumps. Not the most attractive look. When Bare Minerals came out with their sunless tanning lotion ages ago, I tried it thinking it had to be better and contain better ingredients. The same thing happened. Needless to say I don't mess with it. Even if I didn't have a problem, I wouldn't use self tanners because I don't want to look tan. Not to mention the upkeep. When I see someone who is tan, even if it is fake, I cringe a little bit. I started staying out of the sun when I was 18. I will be 50 next year and I am so glad I have taken such good care of my skin. I don't look my age that's for sure. Thanks for all your hard work you put into your videos.
Second time watching the video and I still learned from it. I wish I cared about skincare when I was younger as much as I do presently. Dr. Dray, you have inspired me to do better, and I have. I also saved a lot of money 💰 💕🍓
I use to be a sun worshiper. I stopped 4 years ago. I am using St Tropez this year and really like the color. Although it can be aggravating because you have to really be dedicated to application and it is a little work.
Sun exposure in general shouldn’t be demonized entirely. It’s very hard for most to get adequate Vitamin D orally/topically. Plus the effects of red light are necessary for optimal health.
you can't get vitamin D from the sun safely or efficiently. Of the total UV that reaches your skin from the sun, only a small fraction is actually the right wavelenght for vitamin D synthesis. The issue though is that the other UV wavelengths (UVA) actually degraded the enzymes in the skin that do vitamin D synthesis. If theory...using sunscreen with good uva protection actually might make your skin better at getting vitamin D from the sun, as it blocks those UVA rays that not only destroy collagen, but also compromise vitamin D synthesis
Dr Dray The sun is the only viable (best) source for Vitamin D, sunscreen definitely is an essential part of sun hygiene. Our bodies reaction to the sun has a merid of beneficial hormonal effects from bright (high lumen) exposure to red (700-1500) nm wavelengths. Infrared has shown everything from increasing bone density to improving wound healing. D-minder is an app based on altitude and the UV-index to have control calculated exposure to the sun. “Solar-Phobos(a)” -Dr. Robert S. Stern’s(Harvard) term to describe these individuals. I still love you very much by the way!
Hi. Thanks so much for this! And omg, you are so cute. "I say it like it's a dirty word." I was laughing out loud! And you are so sweet to encourage those of us who "back in the day" used sunbeds. Yep, too late for me but I now will tell everyone not to. These age spots on my face are testament to that! Thank you again for spending time with us and teaching us so much about a health lifestyle! Love your channel! :) Kat
So tanning is a bonafide addiction! That certainly explains my years of obsession with sun bathing! I would literally feel depressed if deprived of the chance to take advantage of a sunny day! I'd get crazy when life would interfere with my sun bathing. I'd switch off shifts from days to evenings so I could tan before going to work! I always wondered if it had something to do with pineal stimulation by sunlight or seasonal affective disorder ... Eventually, I learned my vitamin D level was VERY low & I wondered if that was what was driving me. Now I know!
Dr dray, they do have self tanners that have sunscreen in them, Jergens used to have one then they discontinued it. Hawaiian tropic has one also with a 15 spf. I found it online. It's in a kind of a spray bottle. I wish more sunscreens had self tanner in them!.
I use a sunless self tanner, and have done so for 12 plus years. I can't imagine being without my bronzer. It's my go-to cosmetic. I look positively unwell given my naturally pasty white complexion, which I hate. I was born in Scotland and with my Irish undercurrents, I come by my skin type honestly. In fact it was free. "I don't tan. I stroke." Woody Allen. You get it. I shudder to think how prone I am to developing melanoma. We used to make our own sun-tanning formula. It was a heady mixture of straight up baby oil coloured with a few drops of iodine. We would slather this on then bake ourselves crispy. Pure insanity. But then again who knew we could very well die of our vanity. Now I use L'Oréal's Sublime Bronze tinted self tanning Luminous Bronzer. It's the bomb. I've tried every potion out there to find the most natural looking shade. It doesn't streak or stain your clothing. And if so it washes away clean. It lasts for a week at best, but I usually reapply every five days. I never tire of people asking, "Where have you been? The weather must've been wonderful." ... The sun never sets in my ensuite. Love you doc. You're a pistol!
Thanks Dr Dray for addressing this subject. I have DSAP, a genetic condition response to sun exposure and damage received during childhood. I was 19 when a few of the many 'spots' were burned off for the first time. I've used all sorts of self tanning products over the years to try and camouflage this disfiguring condition. Just washing your hands with soap and water will not remove the tanner. You have to use a soapy washcloth and scrub palms and each individual fingers to prevent staining. Also, wipe off the cuticles with the washcloth as they seem to darken easily. Don't be daunted, it is really easy and quick to do this clean up, and I found is good for the transition of the tanner from wrist to hand. PS. Clarins has been my favorite, most natural looking for me. I'm interested in the clear water self tanners. Anyone tried these?
DSAP is very difficult to cope w/ and notoriously recalcitrant to treatment. Thank you for sharing that the self tanner has helped to camouflage it, i never thought of that
Dr Dray I've tried everything and given up on treatment, the lesions are just too deep and cover too much surface area. Like my wrinkles, I've come to accept them. I make my own face cream using rosehip oil, carrot seed oil, frankincense, vitamin e, and rosewater as the active ingredients. The cleanser I've made is a 2:1 mix of coconut oil and castor oil. The castor oil does make the hair on my face grow, eyelashes, eyebrows, and chin hair-ha!
Good news, thank you Dr. Dray! In case others have really sensitive skin, Skinceuticals provides a nice color and is easy to work with. I’ve tried many organic self tanners, but they don’t look natural, they tend to be more “orangey.” I use vinyl gloves under the mitt, as I’ve had tanner soak through the mitt before. If anyone else has sensitive skin and has had a good experience with a product that looks as close to natural as possible, please let me know? Thank you Dr. Dray! Blessings🙏🏻
I’m so happy you did this!! I trust you so much and you are so knowledgeable on everything!!😀😀I use this tanner called mine tan! I love that at the end of summer I can wash it all off and have no sun damage 😀
I am so mad at myself for using tanning beds in my early twenties, even though I did know the risks. Sometimes when you're young you don't think about hoe your actions may affect you in the future, and that certainly was the case for me. It was all vanity driven and I regret it so so much. I went for about 3 years once a week or so....i cringe just thinking about th damage I caused. I stopped at age 24 and I am now 34. Hoping my diligent sunscreen habits will help prevent any more damage! Thanks for the great video! I love a good sunless self tanner in the summer months!
Thanks for this info! I wish it wasn't so high maintenance to do! Can you do a video on these new lotions that are being marketed as a way to get a faster natural tan because it accelerates the melanin response? They claim you can put on some sunscreen and it'll still work and that it'll help prevent skin cancer. It would be nice to hear you debunk their claims and pick apart the ingredient list. Brands that I've seen all over IG are The Fox Tan and Maui Browning Lotion. Thanks for all you do!
I have been using sunless tanners for years. I tried to tan back in the 70's when I was a teenager, never really got a tan. Even the summer I spent as a camp counselor I didnt get a tan! My sister though, I think is an addict!! I've tried to convince her to go sunless, but so far, she hasn't gone for it. My fave is Bare Minerals Faux Tan. (A 16 oz. bottle lasts me about 4 years!) It gives instant color. It's easy to see where you have applied to get even coverage.
I am glad you approved it i am not pale skin myself my skin is naturally kinda olive skin tone but i still use self tan because it covers stretch marks and acne scars i love it
What a lovely person! 🙂 I wish I new this back when I was modeling! Now I'm in my 20's so I have to find other work, but I would like to try a light sunless taner on my legs. I really appreciate sharing your information and your honesty!
so glad I found this ! used to be a sun worshipper in my 20's..now in my 50's I say no way! but do use self tanners only on my legs and was worried was bad for me! Have learned so much from you Dr Dray!! thank you
Happy Tuesday from Seattle,Dr.Dray!...Have had my "nose to the grindstone" for the last few days in my trichology books, but, just decided to take a "study break" & catch up on "The Day In The Life of a Derm & Her Sidekick Totoro"!!...I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED your videos from this past weekend(what a TREAT to see the interior of your brand new apartment...IT IS LOVELY!)...I have to weigh in on this whole subject of tanning...My mother(who was a nurse & truly had the knowledge & understanding of the damaging effects of the sun)had a great affection for sunbathing(I would even go so far as saying that she was a TOTAL SUN GODDESS)...She was also a smoker & the combination of the two lead to serious health issues and ultimately a diagnosis of malignant melanoma AND lung cancer...After caring for her the last year of her life,(she was only 57 when she passed)I made a promise to myself to NEVER partake of "sun worship"(& that includes tanning beds)...After seeing someone so dear to you suffer because of the need to look "tan & fit",you find yourself humbled & on a personal quest to discourage dangerous "habits" & promote the importance of SERIOUS SUN CARE....I am greatful to YOU on a daily basis, for your encouraging words about sun protection & no-nonsense opinions about, what seems to be,a "tanning epidemic"....Guess I'll never fall into the "beach babe" category 'cause this "babe" will continue to slather herself with sunscreens & look pale!(or even "pasty white" during that "gray season" here in The Great PNW!) :-)
Oh Dray, I never went tanning until my husband and I went to Mexico. Everyone said, go get a base tan or you will burn, burn, burn. So I did, and I loved having a nice tan. Well, two years later, on my nose, Basil cell came up. They almost had to cut my whole nostril off !!!!! Thank God, the cosmetic surgeon who fixed it did a great job. Now, I run from the sun, its awful. My two daughters also went tanning a lot more than myself, for the PROMS they went to. And I could not convince them that they just looked weird, but I do talk to them about it now. Kinda late, and we all have sun damage. xo Simone
I stopped tanning in my early 20’s when I realized I could have darker legs with sunless tanning lotion. So, it was helpful for me. Fortunately, I didn’t lay out in the sun often back then. In my 30’s I did something similar, and just decided to embrace my natural color. Too lazy to mess with it too!
I totally get your perspective on why you don’t use self tanning lotions. I don’t use them for very similar reasons. In addition to that, I’m just to lazy to apply a fake tan every few days (since it does not really get me a benefit). My niece loves sun bathing. Her mother and my brother as well… They always encourage us to sunbathe, I do always encourage everyone to AVOID sunbathing 😅
Since watching you , which is not to long I’ve changed my skin care , I simplified my skins care and I’m now diligent about sunscreen everyday 7 days a week rain or shine , thank you so much for changing and putting me in the right direction. . I gently wash with Cerve, add some moisturizer then retina a and moisturizer on top of that , Morning cleanse again again moisturizer the. SPF THEN FOR ME I LOVE MY COSMETICS LOL , THANK YOU 😘❤️
When I was a teenager i worked in a tanning bed salon, and the owner teached us (the employees) to say to the clients that tanning in tanning beds was less dangerous than tanning outside because it's a controled environement (uv, time, etc)... Now i'm only 32 years old and I have the wrinkled clevage of a 50 years old woman so I can definately say it was a pile of crap!!
I love the history behind "sunless tanning" out of the mouths of babes...lol! Had they not spitted up. This was timely as I very recently purchased and tried "Tan Towels"... for upcoming wedding of our youngest son. I did do research and seemed safe from what I read. I didn't know about the facts behind sun tanning addiction too! Wow! Such a great wealth of information and yes, I am 52 hiding veins etc on feet and legs...even though my dress is floor length...my feet will look better with this fake tan. Thank you for the tips at the end...I wish I had this before first application...although...It will be helpful next week when I reapply. Thank you for all your videos! Also, I want to make mention that I have been using the "Differin" product you mentioned and wa following your instructions to the "T" and they stayed and ended up with a bit of a burning sensation to which I resolved by applying to clean skin 2 days a product called " ASAP 365 Silver Gel" this totally helped and will go back to your safer method.
Great video! I love my sunless tan! It's silly but it gives me such a boost of confidence. I'm naturally very pale and thanks to you, have been very diligent with sunscreen over the last year, so I'm very happy to hear there are no real negatives with using self tanners. My favorite right now is the Josie Maran self-tanning oil. I've also loved the St. Tropez 3 hour express.
Thank you for this video. Love your very peaceful, relaxed bedroom setting. Great backdrop. No distractions...so we can focus on the message...Grandma Bunny in Phoenix.
I have found that Jergens moisturizing tanning lotion is great... doesn't turn orange, gives a real looking tan... I'm very fair skin and it works great...
I recently read that when your DHA treated skin gets exposed to sunlight,180% additional free radicals are formed. So the ingredient as a whole is just accelerating sun damage ☹️
Great talk. Thank you. I caught you using the word ‘untoward’. I found myself using it frequently after warching all these british dramas. Must be the Downton Abbey effect ;)
I can appreciate how when done well it looks lovely, can help boost self esteem & disguise certain blemishes... However, I refuse to accept that I should be regularly dying my skin an unnatural colour in order to fit societal norms... Also, I can't be arsed. 😁⛱
Freckles ≠ bad, mind you. I personally think they’re very pretty as not everyone can have them. Freckles themselves do not mean damaged skin. Freckles can be genetic, but they are the skin’s way of _naturally_ responding to UV rays and attempting to protect itself from sun damage. Not all skin can do that, which makes freckles rather unique. Yes, they can form _from_ UV exposure, but it does not mean their skin is damaged. Can we please get away from this outdated stereotype where “freckles = bad, ugly” already? It’s so gross and makes people feel like what their body is naturally doing is “wrong” when it’s not. At all.
Thank you, so interesting! I’m invisible without some self tan on my legs... atleast thats how I feel 👽. Light blonde and pale pink all over... Thankful for the mousses like st tropez and vita liberata now for summer days!
So thankful for this info!!! Last summer I used a self tanner on my legs. Worked out great. This summer I began using the same tanner and didn’t I break out in a horrible itchy rash all over my legs. 😳. Wanted to make sure it was the tanner, used again and yep, same reaction. I am going to get a different brand to see if it’s just the added ingredients. Thanks. Sue
I could say I’m addicted to sun bathing, I just love the warmth and it makes me happy. although when I do sunbath I can never get as tan as I’d like to since I have fair skin & auburn hair so I do like the wet skin moisturizer to help with that in the summer. I am going to be applying more spf protection to myself during those times I want to sun bath & add sunless tanners & self tanners.
Tanning beds are illegal here in Australia :D best decision ever!!
that is awesome
UV is recommended for my type of psoriasis, tanning beds are bad but I have to admit it saved my hide that time 😊
@@xmx005
Yes I totally believe what you are saying.
Rose Di Battista they should be illegal everywhere, they are so incredibly awful!
I worked in a salon that had sunbeds. One of our clients got skin cancer from using the beds. She was naturally dark skinned so don't be fooled into thinking you are just at risk with fair skin !!
How often did she use them ? I've noticed that most people who use tan bed go there at least once a week, all year long.
Cheers!
Palladio 747 as someone who is very fair, I would be very pleased if that happened! 😄
This is bordering on classism and racism.
Tanning won’t go out of fashion until the fashion and beauty industry stops using tan models. I don’t care if they have real tans, or if they are fake tans, or if it’s just a photo shopped tan - it still sends a message.
It also was seen as a symbol of purity as well
I soo thought you were going to say stay away from fake tan, glad they are approved by you because I use them everyday! 💖
Emma Rose Smith I know I was so scared 🤣
Same 😍
Me too. Thank goodness.
U cant shave again after some days if u have fake tan on?
@@449maira u can shave with self tan but don’t wax! Wax will pick up the tan and look crazy😂
A day without Dr. Dray is like a day without sun-screen!
:)
Janet Kissane very true
Exactly!!
Lol!
Lol
sophie sabbycat I love this
Weezy Breezy I think you misread, I said I look 15 years YOUNGER than my friends, not older. 🙂
love your comment soo much :)
I love self tan lotions it's like body makeup hides all the flaws
Exactly!
Nae West Yes! I like it too because it makes me look a little thinner.
Jaanika Kirsipuu I have stretch marks and spider veins and when I put it on I'm at the beach not getting wet but just taking pictures LOL
Dray!
Thank you for finally addressing this topic!! This is my first summer relying completely on self tanners for a summer glow thanks to you :)
so glad you are faking it!
Melanoma survivor here, this is golden advice!
I started using Spf consistently this year because of your videos Dr Dray. Thank you!
:)
In theory I like the idea of sunless tanners, but in life I can’t be bothered.
yeah it seems like a lot of work
I watched some youtuber a while ago go through their whole regimen for putting it on their whole body. It literally took all day....the things people do for beauty. Waaaay too much work for me.
Same.
M Greenwood a great way to do it is to shower/shave/tan before bed, then let the tan develop while you’re sleeping & do a quick rinse off in the morning 😉
If you are as white as me it's pretty darn hard to get it right and they are often sticky stinky. Yuck. So I look like a glowing marshmallow.
Omg!! I love your daughter's response. Idk how old she is but that was very mature and badass 🤣
@@amandaamerman4577 Those creams have toxins in though. Sun protection creams.
I sincerely hope you are doing better and taking care of your health doctor. It’s heart breaking to see you this way
I also tanned in tanning bed and sunbathed up until I was 50ish .
Especially "down there" and I haven't found a lot of information on spots in that area.
nanceev2 I hope you’re melanoma free now ❤️
Nancy so brave of you to come forth with your story, it is not in vain, it's really shocked me in a good way, I hope your on the mend now and end up cancer free❤💕
Interesting that some would tan that area considering how sensitive it is. Wouldn’t it be like tanning ones tongue. I hope you are doing well. Quite a tragic story.
@@LinA-it9vd most people tan in tanning beds naked.
Heidi Ledford oh no. Bless you!
PyyhekumiKola thank you :)
I agree!
Wishing you all and nothing but the best with your removals.
I am sorry to hear you are having to go through this
So sorry to hear about that! Wishing you the best results! 💛🌼🌻💐
:)
I hope you are well mentally, emotionally, spiritually and, physically. I love the work you do and the knowledge you share.
I actually can’t believe tanning beds are legal!
I do spray tans and I use organic solution! It's a wonderful alternative to damaging sun rays🌞
OMG had no idea about the tanning addiction being a thing! Feeling educated, thanks!!
Thanks for watching
I do exactly the same..
S A Whaley there were benefits to being a Goth kid in the 80s and early 90s that I very much appreciate even more now...like a pale complexion!
TxMimi unfortunately my sun and tanning bed exposure predates Goth culture taking off in the US. I was already in my 20s by then.
So glad you put such an emphasis on the dangers of using tanning beds!! I feel a lot of people who use them have no clue!! Thank you Dr. Dray🌼❤️🤗
Dr. Dray,
Thank you for informing your viewers of how dangerous tanning beds are. Thank you thank you, thank you!🌈 🧡
Thank you for this video. I am a melanoma survivor and preach the same message.
@@emionyx1585 which self tanner do you recommend?
I was about to use it but I guess I will skip it.
I love Dray, you're a very intelligent lady. I appreciate you taking time from your busy life too educate us.
PLEASE SHOW AN iHERB HAUL!!!!!! You reference it a lot and i'd love to see everything you get!!!
I also use a really light instant tanner from the drug store in the summer, because I’m allergic to the sun (I get blisters).
Well self tanner lotion has done my skin wonders and I will continue to use it
Yep. I love self Tanner lotions.
:)
The tanners can be irritating...they are a lot of work, it seems
I love mixing Banana Boat Deep Dark sunless tanner with CeraVe lotion in my hands and applying it. No streaks!
:) Kat
Thanks Ms Kathleen! Hope you are having a good week
Now I know!
You should make a several part video series of basics of skin care that put all the great information into a course.
Dr dray, they do have self tanners that have sunscreen in them, Jergens used to have one then they discontinued it. Hawaiian tropic has one also with a 15 spf. I found it online. It's in a kind of a spray bottle. I wish more sunscreens had self tanner in them!.
The brand tanologist has self tanning drops that you can add to any moisturiser or sunscreen.
Happy Tuesday Ms Denise!

I love a good sunless self tanner in the summer months!
spf pays off, even when started later
Thanks for this info! I wish it wasn't so high maintenance to do! Can you do a video on these new lotions that are being marketed as a way to get a faster natural tan because it accelerates the melanin response? They claim you can put on some sunscreen and it'll still work and that it'll help prevent skin cancer. It would be nice to hear you debunk their claims and pick apart the ingredient list. Brands that I've seen all over IG are The Fox Tan and Maui Browning Lotion. Thanks for all you do!
It still amazes me how you can explain to us what I assume is pretty complicated information. Thank You! Rita
Omg thank you for making this video! Not so long ago I asked you for a more safe tanning option, and today I see this :)
Thanks for watching
I have been using sunless tanners for years. I tried to tan back in the 70's when I was a teenager, never really got a tan. Even the summer I spent as a camp counselor I didnt get a tan! My sister though, I think is an addict!! I've tried to convince her to go sunless, but so far, she hasn't gone for it. My fave is Bare Minerals Faux Tan. (A 16 oz. bottle lasts me about 4 years!) It gives instant color. It's easy to see where you have applied to get even coverage.

It pays to be lazy, lol!
I totally get your perspective on why you don’t use self tanning lotions.
I don’t use them for very similar reasons.
In addition to that, I’m just to lazy to apply a fake tan every few days (since it does not really get me a benefit).
My niece loves sun bathing. Her mother and my brother as well…
They always encourage us to sunbathe, I do always encourage everyone to AVOID sunbathing 😅
Since watching you , which is not to long I’ve changed my skin care , I simplified my skins care and I’m now diligent about sunscreen everyday 7 days a week rain or shine , thank you so much for changing and putting me in the right direction. . I gently wash with Cerve, add some moisturizer then retina a and moisturizer on top of that ,
Morning cleanse again again moisturizer the. SPF THEN FOR ME I LOVE MY COSMETICS LOL , THANK YOU 😘❤️
Love to see you with a little color from the color of the self tanner give it a shot
From the comments and this video I am going with SPF and have my skin the way it is. Even though I love tanned skin.
Absolutely love all of your videos, so educational!
:)
This video was extremely helpful. You said everything without judging and gave wonderful explanations. Super grateful. :)
Thank you so much for this great info! I was wondering if fake tanners were ok. And the tips on applying, so glad I can use a moisturizer beforehand!
I use Loving Tan self tanner and I love it!
I LOVE this video! I use sunless tanner every summer! Thanks for the interesting facts!
:)
Extremely informative with excellent suggestions. Thank you Dr Dray
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO !!! I really needed a video about sunless tanners
I love historical information about things too!
Ok then will try the Josie Maran. Just ordered
If you wash you palms with Dr. Bronner's bar soap you will have no stains.
Can you elaborate on this?
I'm glad I watched this because now I will going to watch your video about varicose veins. Happy Tuesday, Dr.Dray!
Thank you for this video. Love your very peaceful, relaxed bedroom setting. Great backdrop. No distractions...so we can focus on the message...Grandma Bunny in Phoenix.
thanks
I have found that Jergens moisturizing tanning lotion is great... doesn't turn orange, gives a real looking tan... I'm very fair skin and it works great...
I recently read that when your DHA treated skin gets exposed to sunlight,180% additional free radicals are formed. So the ingredient as a whole is just accelerating sun damage ☹️
Great talk. Thank you. I caught you using the word ‘untoward’. I found myself using it frequently after warching all these british dramas. Must be the Downton Abbey effect ;)
I only use a self-tanner on my legs in the summer, generally. I am going to search for your vein video. Keep looking UP!!!
I can appreciate how when done well it looks lovely, can help boost self esteem & disguise certain blemishes...
However, I refuse to accept that I should be regularly dying my skin an unnatural colour in order to fit societal norms...
Also, I can't be arsed. 😁⛱
I prefer my China doll white skin to the tan.. No freckles, no sun damage and pretty pretty skin.
At all.
Not everything is right or wrong merely a preference to one look or another.
Lol, brings back my "QT" days. They have come a long way with sunless tanners, between the color and scent.
Thanks. Sue
:)
