Was This Abandoned F100 Worth Saving?

  • I had a buddy send me a deal on marketplace in my area, and it was just TOO CLOSE TO HOME to pass up! I found this 1966 Ford F100 pickup moments before being sent to the #SCRAPYARD and thought she was worth giving a second chance... She looks nice enough on the outside but watch and see what shes hiding inside!
Also stick around til the end for our "comedic theory" in the form of a #cinematicshortfilm of why this truck says "FREE" on the tailgate HAHA

You talked about Derek. You need to watch a few more of his videos. He has it for procedure of starting these engines, turning him over by hand. If possible, oil down the cylinders, save the rings starting off with the coil, testing the inside and outside into the points into the plug wires into the plugs. It's a very good procedur and often successful

Order of events after discovering it's full of water: Pull plugs and examine. If the cylinders appear to be salvageable, drain water out and try to determine where the water came from. Coolant? Intrusion? Some kid stuck a hose in it? Pull a valve cover. If it is in the same condition (terrible) as that other one, start looking for a different motor. The cost of a full rebuild is way more than a good used motor. If it looks salvageable, drain it, install new oil and filter. With plugs still removed crank it a while and let the oil pump pick up that fresh oil and circulate it. Perform a compression test while the plugs are out. Nothing will tell you more about the base condition of the motor than a compression test. Try to determine that there is oil pressure. If all appears well reinstall plugs. At this point you have learned a lot without spending much money. If your investigation to this point has determined the motor justifies working with it diagnose ignition.
Backfiring through the carburetor, if it isn't stuck valves, is retarded ignition timing or lean fuel air mixture due to not enough choke on a cold start. Start at the nipple on the vacuum advance pot, visually trace a line forward toward the base of the vacuum advance and continue that line around the curve of the distributor. That is the direction of rotation of the rotor. To advance the timing rotate the distributor toward the advance pot nipple.
For your initial radiator fill just use water. If there is a bad coolant leak there is no point in dumping expensive ethylene glycol out on the ground or into the cylinders through a crack or a blown head gasket. After you have determined that system in intact then drain and install coolant.
Your videoing and editing skills are way ahead of your mechanical skills. Easier to learn the mechanical stuff. Like you said, it's additive.
When I was a young guy I was hired to do a valve job or something on this old Ford V-8. After I got it together I couldn't get it to start. I worked all night on it and about dawn it suddenly hit me I was looking at the cylinder numbers from the front of the truck where I was working, not the rear of the engine. I changed the distributor wires to fit the correct cylinder numbers as seen from the rear of the engine and it fired right up.

Just a little tip for future vehicles that have sat for a long time , always fill the carb with some type of penetrative oil and B12 mix and let sit for 10 minutes before working the throttle linkage, the oil will soften the accelerator pump and lube the float and other moving parts inside the carb , it works pretty good about 50% of the time

Hey what the H£LL are you doing????? Never ever put oil filter on with your oil wrench 🔧 you are too hand tighten it but before you put it on make sure you put oil on the rubber gasket and then hand tighten it up. I know you’re still learning and don’t stop learning. I have made many mistakes myself I was 13 teen when mom had me change a starter on her car and I didn’t know you were supposed to disconnect the battery. So keep on and ask questions and go to some garage sales and yard sales or estate sales and look for some or any kind of auto Repair books like Chiltons or any other type. If you have them you can always refer to them for answers. Just keep up the good work and the love of making them run.

39:52 Instead of the large slip joints on the starter solenoid one of the small terminals should have a s on it. Take your lone wolf and connect to b+ and the s terminal. She should crank. The other terminal should have an I on it. This is to provide 12 volts to the coil when cranking. Once running it will use power from the key switch though a resistor to keep from cooking the coil. (Ya i commented before you figured it out)

Just Googled Pics of 62 Ford truck engines , valve covers are rounded on top and have a 2 bolt pattern coming straight out of the top , so definitely a later model engine , run the numbers and see what you actually have and then Google how to time it

That's not a 62 got a 62 grill in it right above the grill should be ford emblems that bed was not offered in 62 would be round tail lights . The engine would be a 292 y block up to 64
