    my first attempt to sinter a metal piece in the microwave. this is a 3d printed steel (17-4 impeller) that I'm using as a test piece. they've been debound and placed in the microwave kiln that I made earlier.
    the filament is made by the virtual foundry

    Nice video, I work at a company making powder metal parts and am a material science engineer. You need to have a protective atmosphere to get a good sinter or at least one with no oxygen. Your material will oxidize and prevent the bonding of the particles. One trick that might get you closer is to make a stainless pouch with some thick foil, put in a small piece of wood and your impeller. Crimp the foil closed so no air can get in. I would put the whole thing inside your crucible because there will be sparks from the foil. The wood will ignite and consume the oxygen in the bag. If you get up to around 1950 degrees F for 20 to 30 minutes it should sinter together. Maybe check the power rating of the microwave. You might need more power.

      Normally I use a sintering carbon in my regular kiln but for this first microwave sinter I didn't. Later sinters with aluminum I've been able to get a proper sinter with Flux alone (haven't revisited steel yet but will try flux & carbon when I do)

    Interesting tests! I am watching because I am wondering if it is possible to 3d print metal clay extrusion of custom exhaust manifold!

      Neat, and yes I think that would be possible but depending on how big of a manifold it may be tough to find a crucible big enough to sinter it

    Nice, I like where you're heading, though I think virtual foundry says you need to put the parts in a Crucible with a ballast material, and in your case you'll need sintering Carbon to prevent oxidation.

    Stainless Mini convection ovens can be bought cheap. I may have paid $120 for mine new but a comparable model today is around $60.
    It is one that has a broiler options so i was thinking this might work well. It wouldn’t be difficult to make a slide in sand box that keeps it centered in the oven.
    I think if i override the control using a PID i may even be able to get higher temps from it without major modifications. Perhaps 750’s i have to dig into the hardware and see.

    Perhaps more insulation around the internal kiln. It may just be losing heat to the oven interior.

    Could you use a vacuum pump to remove the O2 and therefore have a good sintering oven?

      With some mods to the maybe, but the problem might be over heating (needing to remove the crucible and then re-draw the vacuum).

    Do you pack the “crucible” just like normal with the white sand stuff?

      Depends on what I'm testing, but _normally_ I'd pack so that the part rests _roughly_ in the center of the crucible. This time though I wanted to grab heat readings off the piece to see where Temps were getting to after a certain amount of time

    I thought you were not meant to put metal in a microwave, am I incorrect in my thinking?

      Not recommended for everyday heating but you can put metal items in for a short amount of time (it's the arcs that happen from sharp edges that are bad for a microwave) but the crucible here insulates the part on the inside so in this case the biggest threat would just be getting too hot for the components of the microwave to handle.
      If you do a search for "microwave kiln" you'll see a lot of people have done this for glassworking since it's very quick to heat up

      Have not tries the Amazon kilns but I spoke to VF on the topic and think they could be used simply by flipping them upside down and covering the round portion vent hole with a bit of ceramic (flipping upside down because you'll want to fill that round portion up with ballast and easily be able to remove the "lid" to dig out your part without ballast spilling in your microwave)

      I'll add that if you want to completely use the microwave for debind and sintering it may be challenging because the debind process normally works best "low & slow" (low meaning temps) but I have experimented with it at 10% power rate. I think it would be possible but you should have access to a regular oven and I think it may be better to "bake" the crucible and 200f for 1hr then 400f for 2 hrs with a window open for ventilation *before* going into the microwave for sintering

      I’ve got a kiln. But Im hoping this technique will be useful for materials my kiln cannot sinter. I can only go to 1100c
