"It's ironic gamers love him considering they hate political messaging, especially coming from the left"
I don't understand why it's so hard for ya'll to understand, gamers don't simply hate politics in stories they hate it when it's RAMED DOWN YOUR THROAT AND MAKES NO SENSE TO THE PLOT OR CHARACTERS.
Put it this way Kojima's Metal Gear Solid series is a game with it's foundation of it's world, characters, and lore built on politics, ghostbusters 2016, Doctor Who, Marvel comics and Last of Us 2 are not built on politics, they are built on action, adventure, romance or fun, political crap was never a main theme of those stories but ret they've been remade, rebooted or sequeled, doused with it today. It's like making a burger the beef inside is the man course, that's Metal Gear Solid with politics. All those other games are just buns with the meat all forced on it later and doused with beef juice. It doesn't work because it's foundation isn't political to begin with. Also Kojima might be classically leftist with his love of Che, talking about Castro and all that but he's no SJW or identitarian, ya'll got triggered when he created Quiet, doesn't clearly he doesn't give two fucks about your idea of feminism. He even predicted today's social climate on arguably his best game MGS2 with the AI colonels speech.
The reason why Gamers/Anti-SJWs and Right wingers like Lefty Kojima's games is because the man is talented and knows how to write his politics in interesting ways that's not preachy and doesn't villainies you if you don't agree. It's not that hard.

    • @decanus8831

Kojima’s views are also seen through a Japanese lens and their politics of what’s left and right are not the same as the west. It’s also funny how they make being anti-war (let alone anti-nuke) an exclusively left issue.

    • @catatafish22
      @catatafish22 7 месяцев назад

Yeah, the reason gamers _sometimes_ hate seeing identity politics is just when they're injected into games where they don't belong. If lefties weren't stuck in their anti right tunnel vision, they'd realise how contemptuous it is too. Because the studios aren't doing it to promote 'social equality' they're literally just doing it because they want to attract a wider fanbase and sell more games. They're just packaging 'inclusivity' as a marketable product to sell more copies. They obviously don't care about identity equality at all.
The reason everyone was pissed off about Battlefield for instance is because women simply don't belong in war games on the front lines lol. And the studio were just doing it as a desperate attempt to appeal to a female demographic and sell more copies. It failed because female demographics hate FPS games and 99% of the audience is male. It's just stupid to try and market a game to a demographic which has no interest in playing... if they really cared about equality, they could just make a new game where female soldiers fit... Do you see anyone complaining about female operators in Rainbow Six? Nope, because in Tom Clancey's world female operators _fit_
This is how I feel about it, and I know plenty of lefties who understand this concept. They're just as pissed off about it, because they see it as companies trying to sell social ideals back to them simply to capitalise off of them. If the R-tard lefties understood this, maybe we'd have better games lol.

If you take a look at the history books, you'll see Japan's leadership had no intention of forming a democracy. The only reason they adopted a liberalist democracy was because of the post war negotiations. USA forced them to demilitarise and adopt a new constitution based off English common law. Japan begrudgingly accepted because it was either that or continue getting bombed. The reason they got bombed was because they were a fascist military dictatorship who kept expanding all over Asia. They were literally the Nazi's of the East.

Kojima was against socialism too. Kojima was Nietzschean. The story of Peacewalker and MGS5 is showing how Big Boss turned from hero to villain. The establishment of Outer Heaven turned into a blight on society, which achieved the exact opposite of what they wanted. He continued to jockey for power with Zero because of their misinterpretations of the Boss' will which was to 'unite the world'. Keep in mind, Solid Snake and Otacon had to fight against Big Boss and everyone who tried to carry out his vision. Both Big Boss'' Socialist Outer Heaven and Zero's Technocracy were oppressive systems which brought the world to the brink of destruction. Kojima was obviously criticising the vision of Capitalism _and_ Communism. He was telling the audience that radicalist ideology is the wrong way because it always leads to oppression. The reason it looks like he's in favour of socialism is because you purposely only chose Peacewalker and MGS5 lol. If you analysed the entire series as a whole, you'd see he was definitely not in favour of Socialism.
Big Boss at the end of MGS4 - "It's not about changing the world, it's about doing our best to leave the world the way it is. It's about respecting the will of others, and believing in your own."
He says this right at the end of the story, when he's finally realised he had misinterpreted the Boss' vision. Even he admits his pursuit of a socialist utopia was the wrong direction.
Kojima was telling a cautionary tale about the pursuit of all radical ideals. At the end of Snake eater, they all began united (Big Boss, Zero, Kaz, Sigint, Para-Medic, Ocelot), and they were united by their wish to make the original Boss' dream a reality (to unite the world as one). Big boss, Kaz, Ocelot etc. wanted to achieve this through socialist ideals, and Zero, Sigint, Para-Medic wanted to achieve it through a technocracy. Both parties were wrong in their interpretation of the Boss' will. Both ideologies are incorrect interpretations of the Boss' will to make the world whole, because they both end up creating systems of oppression. They lose sight of what they're really fighting over and end up just fighting for power over the world. They think this power will manifest as a utopia, but all it creates is a world of perpetual conflict.
The point of Kojima's message is to stop being a simp to ideology in general, and to forge your own path instead. That's why he keeps criticising the player for wanting to LARP as Big Boss or Solid Snake, that's why he has the theme of genes and not allowing your fate to be dictated by the 'destiny' encoded within them. In a world where times and society continue to change, you can't have one ideology preserved in stasis. Because as time changes, ideology becomes outdated and the only way for it to perpetuate is through oppression. All of this aligns with Nietzsche's values.
Listen to what Big Boss says to Solid Snake at the end of MGS4 - ruclips.net/video/JqRNO1zQx_Y/видео.htmlsi=bAegNfF_BiZGF_Up&t=1164
He admits that he was wrong all along and that the only way for the world to become whole and free again is for his and Zero's life to end (along with all the other ideologues who tried to manifest the Boss' vision). All the stuff he did in Peacewalker and MGS5 were mistakes, Kojima was portraying their adoption of Socialism as part of their arc from Hero to Villain. Even though they had a 'good intention' of uniting the world, the only way to achieve this was through force which meant they continued fanning the flames of war. Ironically, they just divided the world in their pursuit to unite because they couldn't allow for any other ideology to perpetuate. In creating their own 'stateless, borderless system', they actually just created their own tyrannical separatist state. Their Socialist haven (Outer Heaven) just became the antithesis of the thing which they were fighting against, and the only way for the world to move forward was for them to die. Allowing their vision to die so they could give room for a new world to spawn with its own unique identity.
This is why Kojima is Nietzschean (not Capitalist, Socialist or any other ideology) - He rejects herd mentality, he tells the audience to follow their own path, he encourages human vitality and he rejects rigid ideology. Solid Snake and Otacon represent Nietzsche's 'Free Spirit' who would usher in a new way of life which is free from the constraints of state sanctioned norms - capitalism, socialism and all of the 'isms'.
Big Boss' arc is literally “Beware that when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.” - His Socialist vision failed because he was too steeped in his radical pursuit of a false vision.

Fantastic video dude! I really ought to get Peace Walker for the 360 soon. This felt especially like a mini-documentary, it was great. Kojima is just fascinating, like not only is he the only real public personality game dev (others are active, like Miyamoto but not exactly public figures of the same scale and celebrity), but he is so political. It makes me wonder if anyone else in triple A tried to do what he does, if they would be able to get away with it. Particularly the stuff with Che.
Oh and it is always cool to see gaming topics on the channel. They have a transformative nature that no other medium really reaches, in the right hands they are a perfect tool for empathy, in the wrong hands they can assist in normalizing imperialism. With this and the COD vid, I wonder if there are any lefty gaming topics you are thinking of covering that are not connected to war? Not a critique, just wondering cause gaming is so centered on conflict, and ideological politics and policy are not super common in indie works beyond maybe anti commercialism like in Bendy. Though Undertale is a good example of not just progressive identity politics, but a message about peace. It would be neat to see someone tackle economics under capitalism in a humanizing way in games, maybe Sims but under the crushing thumb of capital.
But yeah keep up the great work

I think the Che admiration from Big Boss was more of a parallel. This game was actually the game that saw Big Boss transform from the idealistic soldier to the extremist warlord from the msx but was so uncharacteristically subtle that it went over the heads of many. By the end of this game Big Boss is in charge of a nuclear equipped nation and is hell bent on opposing the world, has declared The Boss's sacrifice a betrayal of him and everything he stands for, has recruited his first child soldier, and has announced his intention to have MSF become criminals and even terrorists if the times demand it. Yet despite this he remains kind hearted, charismatic and compassionate. The che parallel comes from the fact that some worshipped Che as a revolutionary hero while others derided him as a socialist lunatic and terrorist. This is much the same as how Big Boss was viewed - a nuclear terrorist and traitor to some, a beloved hero and leader to many others

Big Boss was a terrorist lunatic who threatened the world with nukes and Solid Snake had to clean up his mess. The whole story is about Big Boss and co. VS Zero and co. Both sides are trying to bring the original Boss' vision into reality, but through their misinterpretation of her will they end up fighting for power and almost enslaving the world.
Big Boss, Kaz and Ocelot following socialist ideals is actually part of Kojima's cautionary tale about following radicalist ideals. They always end in a struggle for power and oppression. This couldn't possibly be any more anti socialist lol.
The guy who made the video purposely picked the two stories cos they fit his narrative. If he analysed the story as a whole, it would completely go against the socialist narrative. I think this commentary is a long shot. To me, both The Boss and Naked Snake clearly says that they neither align themselves with capitalism nor with communism/socialism. And as a centrist, this understanding resonates with me the most.
One problem with your video is that you generally make the assumption that "Everything done by USA = Capitalism", which might be true under some cases, but doesn't hold true for most cases. After the end of World War 2, Europe was really devastated, major British, German, French, Dutch, etc. cities were constantly bombarded for years. Nearly every European country's economy was in shambles. Nothing of that sort had happened to USA, and with this advantage they exploited the weakness of other European countries and coerced them into the post Bretton-Woods era, an era were USA was a superpower and rest of the world's economy and finance were fixed onto the USA economy and everybody had to accept this injustice. Organizations like the UN, OECD, NATO, WTO, IMF, World Bank etc. had been all constructed around 70 years ago to protect this new world order through economic, political, financial, militaristic means. So, first things first, I believe even classical economists like Adam Smith wouldn't approve such a world order or claim it's all according to the capitalism. American imperialism is not necessarily a defining property of original capitalism. They are two distinct concepts, but you generally stir them in the same pot. USA shouldn't have been flagship of the capitalist world in the first place, they are an abhorently bad choice for that. As a centrist, I'm not opposed to capitalism as an economic model, but I'm definitely opposed to American application of it enforced along with imperialism. I'm not happy with the current world order, I'm not happy with the wealth inequality, and I think this has to change ASAP.
I can clearly say that I'm not a communist or socialist, but I too, like Hideo Kojima or Naked Snake, respect Che Guevara as a revolutionary fighting against American imperialsim and trying to protect the interests of the people in Latin America. I also respect Vladimir Lenin, I also respect Karl Marx. Karl Marx made lots of invaluable criticisms against capitalism, he maybe even made the current world much more equal and just than an alternative world without Karl Marx and Das Kapital. I think his initial remarks about the post-industrial revolution world are true. I also believe his dialectic method that was inspired by Socratic dialogues and Hegelian philosophy, and was applied to economic history of humankind is also right. But I don't think his prophecy about socialism and communism were right. After all, his anti-theses to 19th century capitalism produced a totally different synthesis of capitalism. But nearly all of the modern day left embraces an anti-thesis that became obsolete nearly 150 years ago (the classic understanding of socialism under Das Kapital) instead of trying to construct a brand new anti-thesis for the modern status-quo.
Even in your video, quotes of The Boss and Naked Snake clearly states that they don't think neither capitalism nor communism is right, they are neither with USA nor with USSR. I'm not sure this is Kojima trying to be USA friendly, I think this is his genuine and sincere feelings towards capitalism and communism. Being a critic of capitalism does not automatically make you a socialist/communist, and being a critic of communism does not automatically make you a capitalist. And similarly, admiring a socialist leader does not automatically make you a socialist and vice versa. This black & white understanding of capitalism & communism is an ancient relic of the Cold War era, fueled by McCarthyism, the Red Scare, the Iron Curtain, the travel bans, NATO and the Warsaw Pact etc. etc. In reality, there are many shades of grey inbetween, and statistics (and even the dialectic method itself) suggests that the truth lies in one of those shades, not in one of the extremes.

For anyone that hasn't played it yet and is watching this video, Death Stranding is even more socialist than the Metal Gear games. There's no currency whatsoever! As far as I know, characters never bring up currency at all even from before the Death Stranding happened. The distribution centers use chiral printers (basically 3D printers) to make things that they need, but anything that cannot be replicated like organs and blood has to be transported by porters. It's kind of thankless (you don't get paid for your work), but it's one of the only jobs that they haven't been able to automate well enough to do without humans. They're the only ones that can deliver things in pristine condition. Despite the lack of pay, they are treated quite well. They get their own private rooms at every city, and are generally respected by everyone. Some people will even let porters stay the night at their personal shelters. To top it all off, the game was partially made as a critique of Trump and Brexit. Good stuff!

Im still early in the video, but The Boss is not a socialist. She wanted to create an oligarchical deep state, run by the wealthiest people, and not a Republic run by Working and Peasant Class ideological leaders under the direction of the Working Class masses. Also, she didnt advocate for the self determinism of nations to build Proletariat power, but instead planned to actively circumnavigate the autonomy of countries, which paired with Capitalism, becomes Imperialism(as we see later in universe with the other games) another contradiction of Socialism and Communism. The goal of Socialism is a classless society, but the boss did not have a class based analysis of the global disparity between the Ownership Class and the Masses or any other Marxist leanings. Wanting a one world government run by rich people is anti-Socialist as fuck. Not to mention, the so called competiton from the Socialist Bloc was not some game of tryng to win power, it was a struggle to defeat Imperialism and White Supremacy, and end the Material suffering and exploitation inherent within Capitalism, to create a classless society which ends the need for states as we know them(not Nations, but States they are distinct)because the Historical Function of the State is to uphold the interests of one class over another, with Worker's States being new experiments against Super-Structural and Base Forces created by 100s of years of Class Disparity under a Ruling Class State. The West actively sought to undermine global liberation using Imperialism, Espionage, White Supremacy, Misogyny, Nuclear threats, War, Proxy War, Economic Sanctions, and Privatization of the resources in 3rd World Nations, The USSR and the other socialist countries tried to stop that.... So using her as a representation of Kojima's socialism fall apart under scrutiny.
