The Socialist Politics of Metal Gear Solid and Hideo Kojima - From Che Guevara to Anti-Imperialism

- V has come to.
Metal Gear Solid is one of the most revered and loved video game franchises. Its innovative stealth gameplay and graphics were always complicated by a bizarre and sometimes convoluted narrative.
Behind this narrative were always apparent left-wing political themes. From the snowy walkways of Shadow Moses, to the jungles of Nicaragua and the deserts of Afghanistan, the games have always used the narratives and historical settings as a vehicle to discuss deeper political and philosophical issues.
This video dissects these themes with a focus on the Big Boss games (3, PW and V)

You have sparked my interest in metal gear like no-one ever has!
If you have a PS3, you should do yourself a huge favor and buy the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection from the PlayStation Store. You'll get to play MGS 2, MGS 3, and Peacewalker. You can also play these games through the streaming service PS Now (if you don't have a PS3) on either PS4 or PC, but the quality of the image while playing them is dependent on how good your internet is. If your connection is too poor, you won't be able to play these games. MGS 4: Guns of The Patriots is also on PS3 and PS Now, which is also an incredible game.
@@themajesticspider-man6116 Unfortunately I only have PC and an xbox gathering dust lol. I do believe that I can get most of the metal gear series on GOG though

It's kind of a beautiful story arc for Solid Snake specifically. He starts out as an impressionable young conservative and as he gets older, in each game, one after another, his political position evolves into a final scene with Big Boss standing over the grave of the boss firmly understanding the vision of The Boss. Holy shit I have to play this series ASAP now. I’ve been meaning to for a while, but now this vid made it seem so fuckin cool. Like I had no clue the games were this in depth with politics talk and world events and all that. Idk what exactly I thought the politics of these games were except for anti-war n’ stuff, but the fact that anyone was confused by MGS and Kojimas politics is wild to me now lmao. I personally have wondered if Kojima was an anarchist. I mean, in Ground Zeroes, he made references to Sacco and Vanzetti, and put in a lot of lines in his games about worlds without borders.
Ive always thought so
Probablly, actually donsent make that difference, communists also want a world whitout borders, the diference is that socialists want a strong state frist to defend the revolution and afterwards abbolish state, and anarchists want the state gone after the revolution, but both want the exact same thing and have always worked thogether

Azan streamed this video which is how I found it. Rewatching it here because it was so beautiful and I missed some of the details. After my left wing radicalisation I started thinking about back when I didn’t care much for politics or anything, and I thought MGSVPP was just a stealth game where you fought terrorist, but in retrospect I got scared the franchise and the developer I had grown to love so much, was making like an anti-communist red scare bottom barrel propaganda game. I’m so glad you made this video, I would not have been able to truly appreciate the artist that is Kojima. Thank you, one love ❤

Just earned a sub! Came here because of Hasanabi's coverage on your video and you made a lot of great points! Good stuff man! Make more like this.
Kojima honestly seems more like an Anarchist than a Socialist to me... That's just the impression I get though.
I agree, Kojima is in my estimation most likely an anarcho-pacifist if we are to use anarchists-with-adjectives.
But one shouldn't forget the significant overlap and intertwined history between socialists and anarchists, and that in its more broader meaning anarchists would be part of the wide body of socialists.

I'm definitely a leftie myself, my dude, and very likely have the same appreciation and love for the Metal Gear series so don't confuse me with being a hater.
The narrative absolutely frames the US as being the unfortunate opponent in the Big Boss games, I absolutely agree. But what you're implying here is that being opposed to the development of nuclear weapons is somehow a left/right wing issue.
The development of Nukes shouldn't be a left-right issue, and maybe it wasn't as much in the past (SALT talks done by Nixon and Reagan etc) but it defo is one these days. It was a big scandal in the UK when Jeremy Corbyn said if he was Prime Minister he wouldn't use the UK's nuclear capabilities while centre-right Labour MP's and Libs have said they would.
@@TheKavernacle this can only be said by an American leftist. If this is ur proof MG is left wing i would consider watching netflix series only
Love the video! I played the old MGS games but I wasn’t aware the creator was such an awesome artist.
I do wonder if the boss is somehow based on Lenin, kind like how the bosses will is misinterpreted by zero and others much like how Lenin's will was misinterpreted by Stalin, just a thought

Just Cause may not be socialist but it has definitely evolved into an anti CIA series, basically all the villains in the series were funded by, are still funded by or are the CIA
There was something that happened after MGS2. I think one of the main writers changed. Either way the ending of MGS2 is definitely hinting at some messed up stuff going on in the world and how there is a shadow government controlling stuff.
Well it wasn’t actually a shadow govt it was four AI running the world - revealed in MGS4. It used to be an in person group called the Patriots but they died. Zero created the AI with the DARPA Chief from MGS1
Tomokazu Fukushima didnt write MGS4. mgs4 is where the series fell apart for me. A lot of retconning and really dumb decisions with the plot.

Also mgs3 is the best!
Hey Kavernacle, I don't know if this is within your realm of expertise but could you do a video covering the electoral situation in the UK? As a left wing Brit it feels pretty hopeless, the Conservatives have had an iron grip for over a decade and it doesn't look to be slipping anytime soon.
That white light shade tho
Oh hell yeah let's fucking get it
so where does a marxist start in playing this series?
The prequel games dealing with the historic political stuff described in this video are:
MGS3
MGS: Portable Ops (although you can easily skip that one since it's quite hard to get a hold of, it's not very good and its canon status is dubious)
MGS: Peace Walker
MGS: Ground Zeroes (this one's super short - first time players normally finish the story in about 45 mins)
MGSV
You wouldn't go wrong playing them in that order.
The 'sequel' series (set in the near-future) isn't as explicit about its politics as the prequel series, but they're still really good games with interesting themes: MGS1, MGS2 and MGS4 (in that order). You do kind of need to play that series too to get the whole story, since MGS4 ties together both the historic and near-future timeline games.

But none of them beat The Plot of Snake Eater.

imagine thinking kojima is a nationalist lmao
Russian isn't Colonizer ?
Ppl claiming there are no politics in Kojima games, don't know what true politics are. He's writing about governments, ways of life, etc. Not, "Wouldnt the world be better without straight white males?"
Politics is when my vidya gam has minorities in it
Yeah, if there was even a hint of feminism or trans people or what-have-you in those games, then they'd cry about "politics in my video games" lol.
Oh, wait, there kinda was, I suppose. By the end of MGS 4, Meryl is seen as this strong (she's literally buff as fuck and it's awesome) female leader who leads a rag-tag group of men around with her and is basically showing that a woman can be strong (her muscles being shown kinda say that, too). For whatever reason, no one in 2008 wanted to say anything negative about that, but had the game been made today, GamersTM would be all over that shit.
@@themajesticspider-man6116 I don't think so. There's a balance to things. The audience already got what they wanted, so why question one of the many "bond girls".
Now, if it was overwhelmingly one-sided. Yeah, you'd hear conservatives & anti-liberals pitch a fit.

I hate being a contrarion here, but the point Whitelight was trying to make was that the main theme of Death Stranding is people need to learn to reconnect with each other, and all other political part of the game were only used to develop the setting. This is like that one time you tried to claim that Vaush was denying that american schools indoctrinate children while he main point was that there is no state enforced idealogy and that it varies school to school.
The main point of death stranding is that mankind has become too decisive and it should be our task to reconnect with each other, which isnt a political stance but rather a social critique.
Is that really not a political stance though? One of the key criticisms levied by socialists and anarchists against capitalism for more than a century now is precisely the social alienation and atomization it causes (most eloquently summed up by Einstein as "this crippling of individuals" when he wrote about capitalism's alienating effects in education). Social critique is inherently political, and calls for political action to transform society to solve its problems (or in some cases, vice versa, as society and politics are intrinsically connected and transformation of society would force transformation of politics).
@@arskakarva7474 precisely, a humanity united would never stand for the injustices of capitalism, only when there is an "other" can you justify such a system

If he's an anti capitalist, he's not a very good one. I can only think of one person more focused on promoting his name and brand as Kojima. He's second only to Trump. I mean the guy had his name credited in MGSV hundreds of times, he appears in-game, he names his studio Kojima productions, and he even credits himself for his trailer edits. I mean, check out his appearances in the Japanese commercials for MGS1. That's just the tip of the iceberg regarding his self promotion.
I'm not claiming to know his political beliefs, but I'm just going by my own observations. He reminds me of these Hollywood actors that denounce carbon emissions yet produce infinitely more than the people they criticize.

"It is clear Kojima is a socialist"
That's a bold ass statement to make given your "supporting evidence" is assuming everything Snake says or does is actually a reflection of Kojima's personal politics and not just a video game character being a video game character
Well for one, this isn't about the words of actions of Solid Snake alone, but also Kazuhira, Big Boss, The Boss, Amanda. So it begs the question, did you even watch the video? Either way, Kojima, always talks about his games reflecting his opinions on real life occurrences all the time. Just this week, at the Game Awards, he was talking about how he wasn't expecting the reality of Death Stranding to hit so soon, which btw, he has stated the game was inspired by Brexit, Trump. Not to mention the MGS series entirely revolve around his real life concerns of nuclear warfare and denuclearization. Honestly, I'd go so far as to ask if you've played his games at all. They all make sure to state to the player that they're going to be political from the get-go.
@@azooreus this isn't a left right issue
@@azooreus The metal gear universe is full of many rich and complex characters. Choosing to cherry pick characters "X, Y, Z" while ignoring characters "A-W" as a way to present proof of Kojimas policy stances is pretty ignorant. Why do these characters get preference over others? Cause it supports your narrative?
Even these characters you specifically picked are multi dimensional. Does Kojima support child soldiers now too cause of something Big Boss does?
Both you and the video creator are making an argument from emotion and flimsy, easily refuted logic.
