Well, yes. Just as "Kavernacle" himself has said, too often conservatives look only at the surface and see only what they want to see. With reference to one of the other games on here, I've noticed that conservatives do tend to enjoy "classic" film noir because of the clean-shaven men in suits and fedoras and "women who actually look like women." What they perhaps don't understand is that the 1940s fashions are incidental, and noir is not so much a style as it is a theme. CHINATOWN reflected many of the social and political themes of the 1970s, and if it had not been a period piece it wouldn't have been that different.
Amusingly, I tried showing a conservative one of my favorite movies: the comic-book movie WATCHMEN, from a little over a decade ago. The movie is very clearly neo-noir, and this guy loves the "true" noir, but he hated WATCHMEN almost immediately, calling it "liberal" because it portrays Richard Nixon as a dictator. But he did agree to watch the film (almost) all the way through, and as it goes along it reveals a complex worldview. Not only is Nixon ultimately portrayed as sympathetic, but Rorscach, the fedora-wearing protagonist delivering the films noirish voiceover, is a complicated figure himself. He's "liberal" in that he's breaking the law by defying Nixon, but he's also "conservative" in that he's a vicious homophobe, as well as almost a religious fanatic in his approach to crime-fighting, which in his case is really just serial murder. And in the end, of course, he's become so fanatical that he's willing to let America be completely destroyed just to satisfy his abstract sense of morality.

    * The player character is an illegal immigrant who was arrested and is about to be executed for crossing the border.
    * You can fall in love and get married with no restrictions on race or gender. Skyrim had marriage equality 4 years before the US did.

The punisher as a police symbol is almost scary if you take it at anything beyond its barest values of "hoorah, justice at all costs!" They are a character who murders people they view as wrongdoers, even if they do not have context or full understanding of the situation or even if they are acting on complete misunderstanding.
Castle, as a character, was introduced with the folly to vigilante justice, that being targeting innocent people through bias. His very first action in comic books was attempting to kill Spiderman because he thought Spiderman killed Doctor Osborne (Green Goblin).
In his existence, particularly in shows, The Punisher has had anti-war, anti-authoritarian sentiment, with Castle pressing the blame of PTSD and his enjoyment of killing towards killing people at war for the government.
They're very much not a "good guy" and, if all cops were Castle, then, indeed, all cops would be bastards in a quite literal sense. They're a nastyboy, through and through.

26:30 I figured that Fallout 3's Liberty Prime would get mentioned. Its become a meme in the Right Wing where they'll clip Liberty Prime's line about "Communism equal failure hur dur".
They completely miss the irony of it. For starters, Liberty Prime was indeed developed to fight Communist China during the Great War but it was never actually used in combat because of technical issues. To make it even more ironic, when it is actually finally used in war its against the Enclave which are the last remnants of the US Government. So it's effectively disintegrating US Army soldiers as it spouts it's jingoistic one liners. The same kind of jingoism that led to the destruction of the USA.

Couldn't have said it better, kudos.

    • @DavidRichardson153
      @DavidRichardson153 Год назад +18

There is also the following details:
      1) Liberty Prime was finally completed and activated by a unit descended from soldiers who rebelled against the US government (back before it became known as the Enclave) for performing biological experiments on POWs. This is a subtle-not-subtle reference to the Tuskegee syphilis experiments and Japan's Unit 731.
      2) The leader of this unit had a change of heart upon first arriving in the D.C. area and chose to go against his orders and instead help the people do more than just survive, prompting some of those under his command to split off and be a thorn in their side (not necessarily intentionally, but canonically, they fought whenever they encountered each other). This, to me at least, is a lot like when George Wallace pushed through policies that elevated countless Americans out of poverty, enough so to become FDR's VP for his third term...and for the Democrats to engage in underhanded tactics to replace him with Harry Truman for FDR's fourth term.
      3) Admittedly, this one is more a personal take, and I doubt the developers actually did this on purpose, but the leader of the aforementioned unit struck me as a Bernie Sanders with military service, complete with him still remaining a part of the group despite them officially disavowing him and continuing to use their military forces - including Liberty Prime - to do good, which just so happened to include fighting the US government/Enclave.
      4) This one is entirely a personal take, and the developers were far too early to have heard even a peep about this, but by sheer coincidence, the leader's daughter feels a lot like AOC, particularly in her first term, and she had no qualms about fighting on the frontlines alongside Liberty Prime (again, entirely personal take here, and undoubtedly nothing more than coincidence, but the details are still there).
There is probably more just about Liberty Prime that can be brought up, but you get the idea. Regardless, you nailed the biggest details.

Very few video games could even be conservative because they are a product of collaboration and artistry which is the opposite of conservitism and most of the people working on them are themselves at the very least liberals. The worst games usually get is just plain vapid, shallow or uninspired. But even a casual reading of most games have themes of anti-authority, friendship, love over greed and self-interest, teamwork, honesty, self-knowledge etc.
Having said that, the corpos who own these games and studios are super capitalist a-holes.
So these wierdos once again misunderstanding and trying to reclaim non right stuff as right (or that it should be) is just... typical fash.

I’m not completely onboard with your comment. I do think a lot of video games are left-leaning, but I don’t think collaboration is inherently a leftist value, in my country, Italy, but surely in a lot of other places conservatives value quite a lot collaboration because they are catholic, and Catholicism surely has a lot of problems, but has always valued collaboration, social cohesion and community. So I don’t think that the simple act of making something together will inherently give it a leftist spin.

The only good games from the perspective of a conservative are ones where you are an anti-hero, or play as the villain, and are actually not written by conservatives and make it clear that you are the bad guy.
Entropy: Zero for example, has you play as a Half-Life 2 metro cop who kills rebels and discovers a dark secret which helps the Combine. In the 2nd game, he is given a backstory as to why he enjoys killing people, and then a redemption arc at the end after he befriends a sentient turret and encounters a rogue clone of himself after his consciousness was transferred to various Combine Elite soldiers.

I also saw how he was a man of lot of potential but was constantly shoved down by High Society simply because of his upbringing. Whereas he had a lot of trauma that he was pushing down because especially given how men were treated in the Victorian era which that was essentially the late Victorian era just the Yeehaw version instead of the Cheerio version. And basically especially back in the late 19th century early 20th century you definitely see a lot of what many people would consider mainstream to be the magnum opus and that if you weren't part of that than you were considered an outsider. Honestly especially given during that time Arthur could have been a great artist for a newspaper or even just an illustrator for some books or something. Obviously this is a fictional character but if this were a real person somebody like him definitely fell through the cracks because when his mom died as a thirteen-year-old boy he was basically found by Dutch vanderlin and taught the ways of the van der Linde gang. And I feel that if Arthur was given a different opportunity or maybe was taken up by an uncle or something that he might be in a different position I'll be it considering what position he might be in it might be considered a gilded cage. And might not fit Arthur as well as maybe him being out in nature and being a kind of like the growth and rough-and-tumble Hunter that he is was honestly the best thing for him. Even if being sick he was out in nature and out in the wild. And I feel like on a certain level regardless of whether you're conservative or leftist or whatever I feel like we as a Humanity as a society has lost that connection to Nature. Antoni Arthur is very much connected to Nature. In fact during the honorable timeline Arthur has dreams about and during the bad timeline he has dreams about wolves. Meaning that he himself is very connected to Nature.

I was always confused about them missing the leftist messaging in a lot of great video games too, but I think it's because you actually need to be able to follow the occasionally pretty complex plots in these games. And as we know from how conservatives miss themes and messages in movies and TV shows, we know that they aren't great at understanding plots in general. Most popular video games also make it really easy to skip the plots these days. Even Metal Gear Solid allows for liberal use of the "skip" button.

They're so over the top that they almost read as parodies, especially the second. At the same time I've found some very good post apocalyptic novels more left-leaning, like "Christian Nation" by Frederic Rich and "After the Revolution" by Robert Evans.
