It's funny because all we have to do is look through history to see how many people thought they were "on the right side of history." Life and reality live in shades of gray, but in a lot of cases like this.. it's black and white.
I feel like when people say that "it's always been political" I feel older games were more philosophical than political that it made you think rather than preach to you about what is right and wrong what's worse is that political opinions are now being treated as absolute fact and is forcing you to accept that
its always been that games, even great ones had political and social themes in the story. but that and THIS woke trash are like night and day. One is written as a compelling story with good characters, one is written as pure propaganda with a game tacked on.

It's always been there, even in old games. But back then, people focus more on the philosophical rather than political.
Like, a game with a group of people enslaved will have people just saying "hey that's evil", but nowadays it's "hey that's racist" and then it's the actual game that's evil.

The phrase "on the right side of history" betrays ego behind a facade of activism. Like ancient monarchs waged wars to be immortalized as "glorious and brave" caring not one bit about what their people wanted.
It's also insane. The Assyrians flayed a bunch of people alive, guess they were on the 'right side' of history because the Assyrians won. The Spartans lost to Thebes, guess the Thebans were the 'right side of history' despite their eventual fate. The Romans enslaved the Gauls, guess they were the 'right side of history' because how dare the Gauls resist Caesar. Columbus enslaved an island and became the Getty of Renaissance Iberia, guess he's on the 'right side' because he won. The logic train leads to some very dark places.
I thought it was a sentence we descriped past events with, not something used in modern activism. Modern activists don't rly study history in the first place and the school system is so bad they don't teach it either.

You've absolutely nailed the problem. We have an industry full of activists constantly screaming that the west has a 'cultural appropration' problem which stifles our own creativity, but then screams even louder when other cultures refuse to appropriate the ideologies they want them to, in an attempt to stifle their creativity as well. So rather than having different cultures be allowed to present their own unique products to the world, they're all expected to somehow be the same and homogeneous, so nobody is offended or has their sensibilities challenged. Which is basically the death of art.

This is why 99% of games I play these days are indie titles. They are actually made with passion, for the players, and are designed with fun at the core, rather than profit or catering to investors and their modern audience.

You ALMOST got there at the end. The real problem with modern North American politics is that it's based around paradigms that don't work. That's why they have to shield themselves from outside influences: they don't want the real world to get in the way.
I think politics should exist if it’s a part of the world and the story of the game. That being said, if it’s forced or not part of the story, it takes you out of immersion and becomes irritating to deal with. That’s my point of view, anyways.

exactly. bethesda games, for instance, are all overtly political in their narrative. but instead of making one side "the good guys" and the other "the bad guys", they tend to be much more open-ended, allowing player choice and interpretation.
imagine if skyrim's civil war section had basically forced you to join the empire, and made the stormcloaks out to be cliche villains. that game wouldn't get anywhere near the praise it gets now, I think. they made it clear that both groups are flawed, but trying their best to do what they think is best for their home, and allowed the player to choose whichever side they like.

I know I'm late and I already commented this to another post, but I strongly agree. I have zero problems with concept of politics in game. But IRL, CURRENT day politics, especially references to real people is such an immersion killer. There's nothing that I, random gamer dude from North Europe, would like more than to be reminded of people like Trump (multiple, clear as a day references) when just minding my business and trying to immerse myself into ancient greek world (AC Odyssey)...
The problem isn't that Wokeism is part of settings based on Earth, it is the way that it is pushed onto the player in a propagandistic manner.
I couldn't put it into words, thats exactly what I feel as well, certain poltics are fine in a vaccum so long as it doesn't take away from the gameplay and the story, but with games filled with the message its the opposite, the story takes a back seat to insultingly bad poltics that have such clear cut flaws in their ideology that it shocks me how dumb our society has stooped to allow these people to even work and live among us, its disgusting to say the least

My problem with politics in games is when they just insert real world politics 1:1, like they are less being insightful into a specific political ideology or an idea, like in MGS, but its just “Haha Capitalism bad”, its more preachy than insightful.
I also hate how often they put in alphabet nonsense and hamfistedly explain what being trans is. Like, it’s not a hard concept to grasp. It’s just an absolutely bs concept.
A perfect example of a good game being insightful on certain example of real life events and politics like, say capitalism, I think is Outer Worlds: it's parody like approach and Futurama-esque plot is exquisite.

So far, only America and Western Europe are instigating more than half of the wars since the end of the Cold War. We've pissed off Russia and blew up one of the largest pipelines in Europe to ensure that American oil companies have a dominant energy monopoly.

My favourite representation of tackling racism in a game is Arthur Morgan from RDR2. The man lives his life and doesn't mean bad to anybody unless they harm him.
And some of his best scenes are when faced with open racism. He doesn't lash out at the racists and comment on why they're wrong, he's just confused at their beliefs while he shoots them for harming another human.
My favourite moment was when I randomly stumbled upon a KKK meeting in a forest and Arthur talked to himself about how weird some people are. He doesn't openly attack them unless YOU do.
He has his own beliefs and even when finding a KKK meet-up he doesn't just blindly go into rage until they're all dead. They're still people, albeit a bit skewed in the head and I honestly didn't feel any joy or fun in watching them run away after I started blasting (okay, the moment the leader ran into the burning cross and lit himself on fire was hilarious).
Fighting racism isn't done literally. People feel most accepted if you act normally around them, not putting them on a pedestal.
I love the fact that he treated Lenny, Charles and the lady with respect and like he would everyone else, they weren't forced down your throats and you shouldn't like them because of their race/ heritage they were good well rounded characters. Especially Charles. And their stories of how they joined the gang make sense and are realistic to the time period it didn't feel forced.

4:35 I HIGHLY doubt that the hair cut the robot sisters have in atomic heart is based off of Yulia. It’s actually a hair style that has existed for quite sometime, the first time I saw it was in the 1980 film The Empire strikes back with Princess Leia using it. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that it’s not exactly unique to yulia, and only her, and that it has also existed for quite a while. But why would the atomic heart developers and character designers give her that hair style? Well, 1st the hair in game is made of metal, so literally any other hair style that would reach past their neck would hinder the robot sister’s movement if it were made of metal. Why make the hair out of metal? Well we don’t really want hair getting infront of the robot’s laser because we all know what would happen if it did, basically it’s more durable, and fire resistant. That hair style not only makes the robots look less light mannequins, but is close to their head so it doesn’t affect movement. I find the idea that it’s more than just a coincidence absurd with no evidence to back it up, and anyone who thinks that it’s not just a coincidence should take a few reading Comprehension tests.
If it was political in nature, it could be related to the view that the Ukraine was a major contributor to sex slavery in eastern Europe, and as he said, it's a cultural hairstyle from there. But popular politics deems certain things untouchable.
I will say that I looked up the hairstyle and the person in question and the hair is pretty much exactly the way the person in question who I can't and won't even really try with the name wears her hair, but yes it is just a hairstyle I really don't think it was intentional at least not in the way of making a statement, but I could be wrong

People forget that sometimes, the whole point of showing the "problematic content" is to educate people on why being this way is wrong and hurts people. For example, how can a kid know not to play with matches and why if they don't even know what matches look like? We need to be aware of the bad parts of the world including the bad parts of history so going forward, we can be better now and in the future.

I mean they started to use Chechens (ethnically caucasian/white, predominantly muslims but less then 1% of total number of Muslims) so they can hire bunch of redheads and Italian-American actors as baddies... because lead actor shooting bunch of brown skinned muslims would be really bad optics for show, even if it's kind of comedic. .

I remember when I was a kid, I had a thing for fire and matches. Ironic, considering my dad was a fireman. I didn't learn my lesson until my dad found me playing with them. Took a match, lit it and blew it out. While it was still smoking he lightly put it on my arm for a second. Although it didn't damage me, it burned. I learned right there that playing with fire can get you burned. Glad it was just that, before I accidently set myself, or my family or friends on fire.

All it takes is one example to disprove your claim that "you can't have a game without politics". Also the video author admits this was a video to clickbait people. He probably knows that politics are absent in many games (most non-woke titles) but wants to play devil's advocate just to spark debate. The fact is: older games had no politics in them. Pacman had no politics in it. Donkey Kong had no politics in it. Space Invaders had no politics in it. All the smash bros games have no politics in it.
Most games prior to the woke mob emerging into gaming culture to infiltrate companies and force diversity laws (same thing as affirmative action but instead of giving women jobs automatically it gives anyone that isn't white or male the job even if they have less merit) ...were free of the woke politics. Don't play ignorant. I'm old gamer and know that there is a culture war. The best companies don't bend the knee to the woke. They allow you to apply your own interpretation and don't force thier message down your throat. Most games of the past were games that either had no woke politics in them or if they had a political message it wasn't forced down the throat of the audience.
Look if you disagree with me that is fine but I already have proved my point with examples. So I am factually correct due to logic being sound. All it takes is one example of games that are not woke to disprove the claim that "you can't seperate gaming from politics". There is a big difference between political governance in games like fallout, skyrim etc and the identity politics in modern games. I often see western developers using the same old excuse: 'Oh but isn't that game or this game political'' on social media.

This whole video reminds me of a good quote from Steve Jobs on why companies decline over time: "They make some great products, but then the sales and marketing people take over the company, because they are the ones who can juice up profits." This perfectly encapsulates how I feel about the big companies in the game industry right now. They're all about marketing, with nothing to back it up. Political correctness is just another advertisement tool to use to market a product.
It's narcissism at it's core. People feel like products need to reflect "the world we currently live in" and that entertainment must have someone that "represents" them. Essentially, this is because people believe everything should reflect their daily life and beliefs. They feel like everything revolves around them. I don't feel "represented" by most of my favorite characters. I love them because they are well-written written and inspire me.
Reflect the world they are creating, it's basically brainwash at it's very best. Soon, everything Post 60s will be rejected.

Some of the best media concerns politics. Fallout: New Vegas is an amazing game which is all about politics: There are several political factions, all with their own characteristic pros and cons, and the game lets you decide which is best. It's a perfect example of how to depict politics in games.
The problem arises when people start pushing for propaganda in games. They don't want a story which plays with political themes or narratives; they want a story which gives a heavy-handed, one-dimensional, cookie-cutter message about how the viewer should agree with them.
The problem I have is that characters are just being chosen to tick a box and not to discuss the real life issues that people are facing every day. You show a person of high moral character getting abused for the way they are born, people will stand behind them. If you show someone who is in the minority but forces everyone else to share their point of view, people will just feel antagonized. Especially in a medium like video games which are often based around helping people and where gender, race, background is often just a role-playing decision made by the player.
Video games are also a way of exploring other peoples perspectives. Once we stop seeing our adversaries as purely evil monsters that have to be exterminated, we can start identifying common ground and finding solutions that benefit both parties.
Im fine with poltics that fit with the setting. Im not fine with shoehorning in real world politics that have nothing to do with the actual game

Fortunately, I'm from an Asian country where a lot of these woke nonsense are foreign to us and I only know the woke debacles from the internet. Or when the politics are so black and white. Yes with some issues it's fine, however some issues require nuance and need to allow both sides to fairly speak. Even if the narrative lands definitely on one side, it is still well done if it offers a fair representation of the other side. What can often happen is one side is given the best representation while the other side is given the worst. This makes the game non-inclusive

The sad thing about Hogwarts Legacy is... it's heavily contaminated. You go to Hogsmeade, and find that maybe 1 shop owner there is Scottish. There's a book seller from, it seems, Jamaica, who apparently came from distant shores, read a lot, then randomly bought a shop in the middle of Scotland (and why did the shop become available? Did the original, local owner drop dead? We'll never know). We have a teacher from Uganda whose daughter makes a point of explaining to the player why their magic is better, and their school is larger. And the local pub landlady... has a badly-recorded man's voice without explanation.
Sadly, both sides played one another a bit. The woke brigade failed to realise what would happen the very moment they said they wanted to boycott the game, and the non-woke failed to notice that beneath all the raging, there was actually a pretty heavily woke game.

And, they're still human. So human motivations still apply. Consider it in these terms - when planes were invented, did entire populations just... relocate to other countries? Did entire demographics shift?
The magical world might be a peculiar and fantastical thing, but actually what the setting tells us pretty clearly is that it's more stuck in its ways, more traditionalist, than anything in the muggle world. In the muggle world, technology develops at a breakneck pace, changing society decade by decade in dramatic ways.
In the wizarding world, as late as the 1990s they're still shuffling around old castles and quaint medieval taverns in clothing that's 500 years out of date.
I have always considered Video Games to be the highest form of art, they combine storytelling, character and environment design, music, and so much more. And i also believe that an artist's work is sacred and should never be altered, or censored. And forcing game developers to change their work and their vision, is like forcing Leonardo Da Vinci to change the Mona Lisa, or forcing Beethoven to change the Moonlight Sonata.

Great take. We really need to recognize and separate politics from pop culture in this day and age. Russians made the game, so clearly some parts of it are going to be a reflection of the everyday Russian experience. We should respect the culture regardless of current geopolitics, and try to remember the world doesn’t center around any one ideology. These devs aren’t the ones dropping bombs on schools, after all-and given the lack of free press over there, there’s a good chance they might not even know what’s happening (hell there’s lots we do politically here in the west that’s problematic, but do we blame our artists and storytellers for it?). Trying to punish anyone simply for being Russian, and therefore a part of that culture, is wrong.
Gaming is a form of art. If you truly care about something, and you want to spread a message, gaming is the perfect way to express art, and yourself.

Because most games, like the MGS series, gives a little of both sides of the aisle in terms of views. The games are very much anti-war, but admit that war and soldiers are a necessary evil. They don't just hammer on one point and claim that is how it should be.

as for identity politics, Certain creators make the story serve the politics when it should be the other way around. These writers dont want to have nuance in their stories because it's easier to write it as sjws rather than making a part of characters inherent traits (being gay or being black or whatever) serve the narrative and develop the character. If those traits don't serve to flesh out the character more, they shouldn't be a focal point in any part of the game. there's no problem with including those traits even if they don't exist to serve the narrative, but if writers and Devs will focus on those traits it should be in a meaningful way. The way they're doing it now is insulting and in bad taste. I can highlight several good ways Devs included these traits and one is from the """"transphobic"""" wizard game
One of the characters in the hogsmead bar (I think) is trans, but they don't shove that fact down player's throats, only making it knowable when/if the player inquires about it rather than screaming about it in every sentence. It doesn't serve the narrative so it's a minor point
Another game that handles this sort of thing well is RED DEAD REDEMPTION. Yeah. A fucking rockstar game did it well.
Charles is one of the best characters in that game, and the fact that he's half native american half black is an INHERENT part of that character's story and personality. He was taught to be loyal and not to poach and to respect the nature as a child. He gets angry when he sees tons of bison that were killed. He teaches Arthur to use all parts of an animal rather than just skinning and running. His culture is (even if partially) part of his character and that's why he's so well done. It serves the narrative and it's a focal point

The issue isn't with politics in games - or any other form of media for matter. The issue is with propaganda in in games and other media.
What differentiates genuine storytelling from propaganda is intent and execution. Genuine storytelling begins with a question or idea, and the various components of said story are used to explore those questions. Propaganda begins with an assertion and simply bends and breaks the various elements of a story to support said assertion. Fundamentally, genuine storytelling stories rely internal, self-contained logic, whereas propaganda requires the imposition of external logic that is wholly seperate from the story.
People tend to overlook or ignore that every element of a fictional work has to be placed within it consciously by its creator(s). Functionally speaking, this means even things most people would consider "unimportant" are integral in assessing intent.
Take a minor element of the Dead Space remake, for example. In the remake, the developers consciously chose to replace innocuous "unisex" bathroom sign with the politically loaded term "all-gender". While minor, it is nonetheless an instance of propaganda as it haphazardly slapping a very specific idea from a very specific element of American culture into a setting devoid of the internal logic to support it.
While the biases of creators will almost inevitably seep in to some degree or another, the question you need to be ask is the degree to which these influences can be cohesive with the internal logic of the story. When these influences go against or impose their own external logic onto the story - altering it in an otherwise unnatural manner -, then you have a problem - then you have propaganda.

Amen. It's one thing to have a political theme in your game, but another to push a specific view as if it's the correct one. That stems from out-of-control ego... the "me me me me me, screw you" mindset. We're all just people, and we all have to figure shit out together instead of clinging onto belief systems that make us feel "safe" or "special." We can explore all sorts of human issues objectively and express our findings creatively. That's what makes good content.
Another part of the problem is that a MASSIVE portion of AAA devs come from preppy art schools in places like Cali, NJ, Washington, and NY where the majority of the students on campus have the same left leaning beliefs… When you spend your entire college life in a bubble of one very specific political/social ideology it undoubtedly will affect your work going forward.
That’s why Japanese, Chinese, and Korean games are so different from Western games. The devs aren’t all from these preppy schools where politics are treated like being in a cult. I don’t know if anyone saw what happened with Final Fantasy 16 recently: what happened was the game was criticized for being “too white”, but the devs (who are Japanese) responded by saying that the game is a reflection of a time period when places like Europe were no where near as diverse as they are now… if this was a western dev it’d be considered racist and the game would probably be scrapped.

I like the Metal Gear Solid series example. I've played all of them several times through and even though I know that they are very politically charged, I've never once really saw it that way while playing. Just goes to show how excellent writing and design can go a long way to helping a player step out of their own little bubble of the world and see the whole picture without having to pick a side everytime.
It's just that people didn't care back then the right or left, but metal gear is very much "woke " when you look into it and they were preachy, just that there wasn't this whininess back then, from all sides
@enginerunsable I can see the games as being preachy at times but I don't see much woke in it. At least not how a lot of media presents woke today.
I agree with you on the stance that in general we all complain a lot more now than back then. But I still think MGS as a whole was written showing all sides of a conflict having their perfectly reasonable and sensible points of view.

@noodles I might have mixed woke with political since sometimes people use the terms interchangeably. As for MGS, the story wasn't empathizing with the overarching enemies "rulers of war" whatever their cool name was, but some of the characters that were on the other side were empathetic, like the individual characters. But overall yeah MGS was very political, I think people should chill out a little more when it comes to games, a lot of games send out messages or have a "point" to the game, and those points are inherently political or "woke-ish" lol. You know, hell, so many people just through around the word Woke so much can barely even know what it means now.
I don't mind games having politics in their identity, it's when they have identity politics that is a problem.
Here's the thing; I totally get that politics in entertainment has become something of a boogeyman nowadays. But, I also love politics in media. How is that, you may ask? Quite simple. Look at games like Bioshock and Fallout New Vegas. They are VERY political. And yet they are beloved games. Why? Because these games didn't just FORCE a *single* *opinion* down the player's throat; they showed multiple perspectives on a complex issue, and let YOU decide on what YOU think is right.
Because guess what. Politics, philosophy and all that stuff are actually *really* *interesting* things that are worth discussing. This SJW nonsense isn't politics; its goddamn propaganda.

I can remember that there is an NPC merchant you can talk to at the legion's base of operation and he talks about how he has no need for mercs to guard him/his wares, because the legion pretty much absorbed every raider group into their fold. Yes, the legions are brutal slavers, but in some ways their system actually works better for some people, who just want to trade and sell, then the wild wasteland of the NCR where raiders and enemy factions roam freely around killing, raping and stealing from innocent people.

From my experience politics have always been in gaming, however, in the past politics served a purpose to driving the story without hammering political views too hard into gamers since the main focus was entertainment first.
Now, a lot of games focus on trying to spoon-feed us the political views of the creators while focusing second on the aspect of fun-which is the first thing games should focus on exclusively before anything else. It’s ok if games want to be political so long as the politics serve a purpose to the story without insulting gamers who choose not to share in the same views and as long as the game focuses on fun above politics.

It seems to me that the REAL reason for this, is the ESG score. Certain corporations are too powerful, and they force other corporations to go along with their politics, or they withhold money.
Luckily the ESG investment funds are starting to run out in recent years due to crappy current events. You can't keep funding something if there are no beneficial returns from it. After all, woke crap is expensive to fund and most of it DON'T SELL due to hardly anyone liking any of that overly preachy junk!

Still, there were quite many expirienced devs on the market, who mainly went into making mobile games. Annoying adds about knight or gardener solving puzzles are Russian made game, afaik.

Far Cry 5 did in fact make fun of Trump. There’s a mission called “Make Hope County Great Again” where you have to murder a whole group to win a vote, and another mission to find and burn a tape of a “golden shower”
When someone gives a negative review to a game for not attacking Trump, it gives you insight into what they believe the purpose of art and entertainment is. It reminds me of something I read in "Dear Reader" when Kim Jong Il saw a student at his school passionately painting a picture until he passed out. He woke that student up and admonished him for painting a medieval castle when he could have been glorifying the revolution, or his home land. He equated what the artist was doing with his own time to "flunkyism". By the end of the chapter, "flunkyists" were rounded up and executed in front of an audience that seemed to be having a competition of "who can cheer the loudest".
This is what it means to not believe in artistic freedom.

You can include politics if it makes sense in-universe and leave it up to the audience to decide which side is right. However, it would be even better if the politics is allegorical instead of the thinly veiled stuff that they are using these days. And remember, the blander the game, the less work “gamer journalists” have to do.

If you play both endings, you find out that the Twins are actually part of the "good guy" side. Once that is considered, it may paint their hair style in a different light.

That's what "wokeness" already does though - it comforts the marginalized and the "oppressed" by promising them a rise to power and it disturbs the "oppressive" status quo which has been identified by social constructionists as the root of all evil.

Games that are "Disturbing the comfortable" are the ones this guy is getting mad about. People who complain about "forced diversity" act as if there wasn't forced conformity for centuries. Look at North American TV in the 50s, it's all a bunch of white families consisting of a mother, father, and two kids. Gay people for example have always existed, but only in the past decade or so characters who just happen to be gay without it being a big part of their character are a thing. Heck, stuff like "racial mixing" was outright banned from being shown in movies/TV in the 30s-60s.
What sounds more forced to you: forbidding things like gay or interracial relationships in media because of the politics of the day wanting to deny those things exist, or people nowadays wanting to represent people that haven't been showed in a positive light if at all until recently? I agree that there are some times where people are just wanting to tick boxes for the sake of better reception, but hopefully that'll settle down because having who you are being treated as just a thing on a list is almost as bad as not being represented at all lol

People mistakenly conflate a game having some political undertones in its story or setting with a game about a certain political ideology. Games with politics vs games ABOUT politics.

Politics in games CAN work depending on how it’s handled, like with the aforementioned metal gear solid/ rising franchise and even the bioshock games which makes them timeless but if and when mishandled it could become a product of its time because of the constant shift of the political landscape.
There is a world of difference between a game having political themes and hamfistedly shoehorning in current-day politics into a game and then proceed to bash the players over the head with it.

I am going to be insanely blunt about this: Games were never meant to be full-on "realistic", as in, simulating everything that blows about real-life itself. We wouldn't even need videogames as a separate medium then, if we went this route. Entertainment media was always meant to be a fun distraction, a means of escaping this dark and messed up world, to immerse yourself into a fictional setting, where you can find hope, learn moral lessons or discover that one character you connect the most with on a personal level. Persona 4 is one such game. It just aged like fine wine, especially when you look at how these hacktivists respond to this game's core messaging these days. Oh boy. You know you're playing a good game, when it causes these dorks for """""activists""""" to overcompensate. Because the game exposes JUST RIGHT, for how shallow of a person most of these folks are, acting all righteous and the moment they are confronted with a person's authenticity, they deny and bully said person for being "too real".
But the moment you start getting far too personal in your own messaging, downright insulting the player's intelligence, by "lecturing them" through really morbid means of "conducting justice" on certain people (TLOU 2 is the worst offender in this category) that they don't like for being "too problematic", Joel and Ellie, for instance, you lost the plot. Nobody plays a game to be given a speech about what is righteous and what isn't, this is no different from being yelled at in public for openly supporting dead-rat-haired president, or whatever. I DON'T FUCKING CARE! LET ME PLAY THE DAMN GAME! I DIDN'T BOOT THIS GAME UP TO BE YELLED AT BY A BUNCH OF TALENTLESS HACKS FOR LOOKING LIKE SHIT! FUCK OFF!
