As a women, I'm tired of media treating men as crap. They deserved to be loved and treated like human beings. Also a lot of the recent media from Disney has HORRIBLE writing for all of their characters.
The female protagonists of movies and TV series today are mostly toxic and annoying. Nowdays the misandry rules, specially in usa, is sad 😔 (Sorry for My English) 😕

What is also lost in this issue is that young girls also need flawed heroes to look up to. Female "heroes" are portrayed as having no major flaws, and if they have a flaw it's actually a positive thing that people around them just don't understand. Boys and girls need to see flawed heroes who push through adversity and overcome challenges. Not just show up and win. Unfortunately it has gone in opposing directions. Female characters are often perfect and male characters often always wrong. Outside of the effect this has on young viewers, it makes for boring films/tv/games.
It also can negatively go in the opposite direction, by taking once exciting, larger than life characters and make them flawed for the sake of being flawed. For example look at current day Lara Croft who has largely lost what once made her so appealing, and i'm not just talking about her sex appeal.

Also there is always a female character in most Male characters and is given special screen time. Whereas in a woman lead character every Men are either useless or dumb.
I'm so glad this is being said. As a female myself, I hate seeing how degraded men in media has become. I grew up with great male characters and female characters. The diversity that we used to have was amazing and showed that you could have both male and female representation without any agenda behind it.
And remember when " we all come from Africa, race is a stupid concept" was the message and we thought that judging people based on the content of their character rather than their immutable traits was a good idea? Since then, we made "progress"... I think that how they call it...

As a woman, I grew up with unrealistic standards for femininity due to poor representation in the media, it screwed me up real bad. Now as an adult, I'm watching my little brother go through the exact same thing with men in the media. It's heartbreaking. I never wanted anyone to go through the things I did and yet every single demon I struggled with as a teen has returned to plague my brother this time around.
Woah... that's devastating if you put it like that. My little bro and I watch almost everything together, from Disney to Marvel/DC to anime, and I only guide him to the good stuff. He's not oblivious to the concept of sexism or racism, but has enough role models to have good self-confidence. I can't imagine him consuming media that treats him badly.

@@ternach7945 I've watched a bit and I don't think the female representation is that bad since the star of the show is a boy you'd naturally want to see him succeed, but my brother needs to hear more positive things about himself right now. Living with 5 sisters has the benefit of teaching him women are people, but it results in him needing as much guy time as possible or else he'll start feeling isolated in his own home.

I’m a woman. And I love seeing strong male role models. I can relate to them regards gender. You don’t have to only like female leads as role models if you are a girl yourself. This is why I loved ben 10 growing up and more male recommended audiences. Because usually the stories and characters were better and more mature. I was a bit of a Tomboy but loved girly stuff as well. I never had a mindset of ew men. Which thanks to my family, they raised me right.
Bam! In my opinion your comment hits several nails square on the head. Especially with regards to IDENTIFICATION. What I mean is the volitive choice a person makes to align with the norms, values and behaviour of another one. As a boy, I grew up in the '80s and back then we had not quantity but at least quality on the 'strong female character' department (before they were called like that)... and I could identify with all of them, regardless of gender just like you. Princess Leia. Ellen Ripley. Sarah Connor. These were well written characters (back then) that I could understand and see as a role model because of their norms, values and behaviour, not their gender. That's actually what role models are about, ain't it? That said, I also think a very important question to ask is: what is the definition of STRONG men actually? One of the movies that really made an impact on me was 'Schindler's List', not because of the topic it displayed but the arc of Oskar Schindler (which Liam Neeson portrayed so masterfully): a man who had put himself atop the ladder of his world, saw the injustice of it and had the will and guts to act upon his change of heart, against much larger odds. That takes both strength and courage. His superpowers? Compassion and cunning. This character showed young me that 'with great power comes great responsibility' towards others, with real-world actions instead of spidey-senses. What I'm saying is, in an avalanche of super-powered characters in media, we maybe need more of these kind of role-models: the simple people that rise to a challenge and GROW throughout the process, showing us how to do it and why it is important to act upon it. So we can identify with their norms, values and behaviour, regardless of gender. My 2 cents.

But if i look at it from a personal view, I think it captures the feeling of longing, loneliness, sadness etc. But they look strong or are willing to live. The only part i find cringe is people wanting to be Patrick Baitman. A psycho who kills people, or so we think. But I think most people have re branded his image to feel from a semi relatable stand point. Like his expressions, or adding him to POV situations as if trying to capture a metaphoric feeling us humans go through.
Great example of good female lead is Lara Croft Tomb Rider, the first remake of 2013 Tomb Rider is really good capturing Lara's journey as a female character overcoming boundaries, Lara's character still baddass and cool on par with any other male lead character/hero without sacrificing her feminism and looks

I am a woman and I 100% agree. Instead of aiming for female-centric or male-centric, let's aim for good-character-centric. Besides, I would think a strong female protagonist would deserve a strong male (if she likes guys) to be her foil. Also, I am the mother of a son and I 100% want him to have good role models to look up to.
My advice to guys, block accounts and don’t watch content telling you you’re toxic for being a male. Don’t watch the media or any social media that spits out that agenda. Focus on yourself and your goals, if you come across women who think you’re trash don’t waste your time on them. There are honeys out there who know the value and worth of men, that’s who you should seek, not these women who believe these agendas against us. It’s your life, you decide who you want to be. It's why I largely stay away from Instagram and Twitter. Both are feminized to the point where I literally feel like an outcast on them. So I deleted my accounts and never looked back. The older I get, the more I'm in support of things like MGTOW. Dating in this day and age is like walking on eggshells.
It is rather sad that we live in a world where talking about male representation needs to be prefaced with "this is not an attack on women". That being said, I am hopeful that things will change and that we will be able to have media where no one gender is berated.
That's because most people today have a divided/unbalanced/dualistic mindset which leads people to think and imagine things in a "us vs them", "me vs everyone else" type of thinking wich also leads to believing and seeing everything in a zero sum way. Basically if your not helping "us/me" then your helping "them/everyone else". This is also due to a lack of objective Logic and of understanding or straight up willfull ignorance of Objective Morality leading to basing right and wrong on their personal feelings and idiologies. A moral person wouldn't base right or wrong on their own feelings or biases or they wouldn't care, let's say, if the victim of a crime was of a specific gender, they would only care who was the victimizer (the immoral one) and who was the victim (the one in the right).

its rlly frustarting, as a girl, to like male characters or criticise a female character and someone just says "oh u just have internalised misogyny" like apparently even criticising a female character is perpetuating harmful prejudice against them or some shit.
It’s probably why so many guys turn towards anime and manga and media of the such. It actually creates a male character that they can relate to and make the feel powerful and strong in places where most media fail to provide.
I would also like to add that manga and anime has a lot of variety in the form of different types of stories that tend to different demographics, from comedy and slice-of-life to drama, crime, scifi, fantasy and a whole slew of other things. In the meantime western media seem hung up on the idea that one story should cater to everyone, and they concequently try to shoehorn _ALL_ the things into everything they make, slap on a "diversity and inclusivity" label and call it a day, with the end result being a mess that very few people likes. Then they attack their audience when things fail, and call them the negative buzzwords of the day before repeating the same mistake. In the meantime, if a manga doesn't succeed it gets booted out, and the creator have to go back to the drawing board (ha) and try again.

Most Anime doesn't tell stories based on agenda narratives most of the time. its just stories with good characters both male and female. And it is why i prefer it now to most other entertainment media because it the same as it mostly always was.
And it never once talks down to you. It doesn’t judge you, attack or assume it knows better. And it was a smashing success, surprise surprise am I right?
The protagonist went full circle and went to a fucking insane person, which I'm cool with. Yes, he was doing terrorist actions but I get why, doesn't stop him being wrong in almost putting innocent people in jeopardy, but I got it. He was a very grey character. I understood 100% why he did what he did but I can also see from a civilian point of view, that dude was a true danger to society. And that is what made the show good. Nobody was the good guy in that. Maybe in the beginning but further we went the more and more his actions became bad. Which he thought himself as well but he couldn't stop his mission because he literally had nothing left to lose but get his revenge.
A few months ago I got called an idiot for claiming that the Yakuza games were themed around Japanese men and masculinity, and that having a main-line female led game would be terribly condesending. Such are the times.
I love the yakuza games, kiryu (as well as many of the other main characters) are fantastic not just in them being strong but likable and interesting as well
I don't care about any of what came before if the game is interesting. This is why there needs to be a preface saying "It's not an attack to women, but actually it would suck because women just don't fit Yakuza as protagonists" which is just random and undeserved, skilled writers can do whatever they want and if Yakuza got to this point they'll make it work, I have that sort of trust.
Arcane is my favorite example of a show that has brilliantly written strong female characters without emasculating or reducing male characters to jokes or villains. The male characters are all as interesting, empowering and just all around badass and likeable without it being a competition with the female characters. On top of that the show is just a masterpiece in general and has inspired me to pursue animation and storytelling.
Absolutely agree. Each character in Arcane were incredibly well defined just on their own. Some might have a backstory with another, but you don't need a backstory for just the characterization. Each one could have their own story that Never mentions another established character, and Still be good characters. And to be able to mesh these characters together so that they play off each other, and help each other grow as characters in the world building is Such a difficult task to do in writing. I went in to Arcane expecting it to be shit, and to tear it a new asshole. But after 10 minutes I completely forgot about that and was just engrossed in the characters, world, story.
Same here, i was inspired to write my own fantasy story... Tbh there are three strong male protagonists and strong female side characters in my books and in today's world, that's not the way to go. After all, i write for my self and ppl who like it 😄
I'm a girl and I agree 100%! While I appreciate that more male characters are written to show emotions and vulnerability more often these days, a lot of female characters are unfortunately written to be the exact opposite... They show very little vulnerability and have barely any flaws. I suspect that some writers may be afraid to write female characters who can be emotional and sensitive due to the stereotype of women being 'overly emotional', because having emotions is 'weak' apparently...? 😐 Personally, I believe it's very important for people and especially impressionable children to have great female AND male role models to look up to, in the real world as well as the media.
Indie stuff seems to not have this problem. Probably because they don’t need to shill to the woke journalists. Same goes with non-western media like Japanese stuff.

Whoever is strong doesn’t need to be strong by pushing others down. Gray Man is a good example because the “strong woman” basically saved his ass in his most times of need. The only difference is that it never came off like pandering. He was the main character but she helped him, it was just done appropriately. Can’t see why you can’t have it both ways.
The key thing is "in his time of need" Every human can be strong, but you show your humanity threw your vulnerability. Having someone help you doesn't make you less strong, it means you're human.

The demonization of "strong Men" in Western Media has made me completely move to watching mostly Asian Movies/TV Shows and playing older video games (playing through the Yakuza Series for the 1st time from 0-Like a Dragon. Currently on Yakuza 3 remastered) or being VERY selective with which new games to purchase.

As a woman, I am beginning the find the strong flawless woman types kinda boring, and not as relatable, I was recently replaying the Witcher 3 for the second time and I found myself relating more to gearlt than any modern female lead the media can produce. And I am also playing through neir automata, with both a male and female lead, 2b and 9s, both of them relatable, and flawed, and strong in their own ways. Pleas bring back flawed leads, of both genders.

I think the overriding issue is that Hollywood/Western writing either party or fully because of “3rd wave feminism” don’t know how to write compelling but flawed (aka relatable) female Characters (I think Lara Croft in the recent trilogy is a huge exception). They can only write either “Mary Sue” characters *cough Captain Marvel and Rey from Star Wars cough* or completely demonize even straight man around that character. In my mind that does BOTH sexes a huge disservice. Personally I love good compelling storytelling regardless of the characters gender but will completely avoid any content that’s going to preach/talk down to me because I’m a man.

personally i think that Guts from berserk is the perfect example of how to write a strong, sure his power and strength is extreme and godlike compared to normal humans of the series he swings a sword that weigh more than 100kg or about 300lbs but he struggles so much that earth is like hell for him he is really emotional and is driven by his feelings for vengeance and is probably fiction’s most tragic character but he still keeps on going. his love Casca was a strong but emotional female character that struggled.
That guy is in league of his own,a lot of anime characters like Goku,Saitama,Superman shows great personality that I would love my kids to look up to n leave the ones degrading men.
As a female and mother to two girls and 2 boys....I've tried so hard to be a good role model for all 4. But it's so hard as a single mom to teach the boys to be strong males when I'm not a male. They know that women are strong, flawed and resilient and human. I don't have anyone around anymore that was teaching them how to be a strong flawed male human in today's world that teaches them they're irrelevant and toxic as their future step dad had passed from cancer last year. They had two years with him and learned a lot but not enough in today's world.

And that's a big reason why Manga wins over Western comics. They don't do this misandric "woke" crap that put men down just because. Anime and Manga has always had strong Female characters from long ago (e.g. Sailor Moon, Evangelion, Puella Magi Madoka Magica), and they NEVER needed to put men down ala-feminist-like like in today's Hollywood stuff.
@@ReimaruArt Eeeh...anime and manga may not be as woke, but there's PLENTY of misandry in different forms. The number of male characters that suffer often horrific abuse from female characters as a laugh isn't just a trope, it practically created the trope.
I feel like of all forms of media, Novels suffer from this topic the least. If you're looking for refreshing media that depicts male and female characters equally as humans first and gender/sexuality aren't as important, I'd recommend picking up a Brandon Sanderson novel sometime. Character writing is something he excels in, and especially in the Mistborn series, the characters feel refreshingly human. Even when he writes characters who are overtly feminist, they do so in a way that empowers female characters without degrading male ones, and his writing never once talks down to its audience. Edit: Particularly Era 2, the Wax and Wayne series. The first doesn't struggle with strong men but does struggle with strong women that aren't its protagonist
100% agree! Also,to find good female protagonists and villains as well as and good male secondaries and villais pick up 'the book of the ancestor' trilogy by Mark Lawrence.

Mangas such as Berserk, Sun Ken Rock, Holyland, Vagabond, Vinland Saga etc. Are filled with strong men and i recommend anyone who hasn't seen any of them or have seen a few of them should check out the rest. I highly recommend them because they inspired and taught me lots of good things
And Cyborg 009, don't forget about that. The titular character as well as the cast as a whole has many strong male characters. It's also one of the most influential manga in history, so there's that as well.

As a straight woman, I miss strong men in media and in real life. The beauty of male and female relationships of all kinds is the balance. We are both strong in different, but equally necessary ways. Like Yin and Yang, we compliment each other and are incredibly powerful together.
You showed the clip of Aloy telling the cook to stand up for himself. And I think one of the biggest things over looked in Horizon is Rost. How important Rost is to Aloy. How Rost taught her everything she knows. His guidance made her the capable young woman she is today.
When you mentioned how "Batman Begins" is about a flawed Bruce Wayne overcoming his fears and trauma to become something more, I thought of "The Batman" and how it shows a similar message. In this movie, Bruce's actions lead to the creation of the Riddler, his trauma and fear giving him the misguided idea that he must be Vengeance to strike fear in the hearts of the criminals. But by doing so he only makes things worst and Gotham only begins healing once he goes past his flaw, face his trauma and understands that he CANNOT be anger and fear, he must rise above it. He must be the hope for the fearful, the light that shines through to the lost souls of a decayed city. I am really glad that they took such a risk and made Batman a flawed, yet good man. It makes me hopeful that even though there's this trend of making weak men in media, some people still strive to do better and give us heroes to strive towards. "The Batman" shows us perfectly how a flawed man can rise above his weaknesses and become something greater and I hope more young boys took it as an example on what to become.
The Batman was much better than I thought it would be. Kudos to the filmmakers for not making Selina Kyle some perfect invincible grrrrl power character either. She's believable, has flaws, takes hits, and doesn't just automatically win everything, much like Batman himself.
Its a brilliant movie ,a very well done Bruce Wayne and Batman.It gives you a feeling of hope , the want to do good and help others.The last scenes of Batman helping the civilians in flood was so symbolic and beautiful.
I still prefered how batman begins treated this over The Batman, because batman begins focused more on The man behind the mask, something the batman doesnt.
This is why I loved Dragon Ball so much. My context was me being tried of marvel and dc and wanting something better that didn’t infuriate me. I started watching DB and seeing such good, flawed, strong characters was truly uplifting
They even got the strong independent woman right: Chi Chi, and Bulma (who's literally the female version of Tony Stark). And most of all, most of the characters have families (Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Krillin) and it's not toxic relationships.
I've become very skeptical of female led medias, games and tv/movies, because of this. Besides Horizon, tomb raider, and single player games to customize myself as female, I rarely engage in other female games. Like you said, it's demeaning and insulting to see men get put down and neutered in the pursuit of female empowerment. I used to love the marvel movies, but I haven't seen a single female led superhero movie (watched Black Widow because of friends) because they are always terrible. Why would men watch or engage in media that actively insults and disrespects them?
I'm sure a masochist enjoys watching that, but that doesn't make it good. It's unhealthy and toxic If I have a son - or Hell, a child of any sex - I will surround them with the best possible media. Tell them stories about earning rewards through effort; treating others with compassion; thinking on your feet; etc.
I've never fully enjoyed media with female leads I'm not a female so my innate responses, reactions, ideas and means of survival are completely different and they're never that relatable Plus when I project into a story I don't project myself into a woman because I'm not a woman
Even Horizon Zero Dawn depicts men as either weak, evil, or effeminate. The only remotely good male character there is Erend and even then he is depicted as being lesser than his sister.
@@OmegaF77 I'm sad cause I was actually loving the game so far, before finding about its "feminist" subtext, and then it clicked in my mind: certain dialogues, certain jokes, certain characters. The funny thing is, there were some jokes on men I actually enjoyed, because I thought they were simply that, just jokes, and not some subtle and smug way of passing the same old anti-men message. I mean, laughing and poking fun at male characters can be really entertaining, but not so much when behind the jokes there is an actual intent to look down on and ridicule a certain social group.
Demonizing young men will lead to lots of angry young men with nothing to lose and no guidance on how to compose themselves to fight this cultural battle. This will lead to a lost generation which could lead to violence and actually move us backwards.

Wow it’s almost like parents and other role models should guide and nurture young boys into good men, not some movie, tv show, or video game. 😂 lol I’m so glad I have parents.
My mom raised me on an extreme version of this, being her only son of 3 children. She beat me every day for years, me alone. She told me constantly how men are terrible and women are amazing and can do no wrong. That looking at a woman and thinking she was pretty, even, was pure evil. My sister joined in on all this, beating me in turn, knowing that if I fought back I would be beat more by my mother because "you never hit a woman" My farther was always gone, and now that I'm an adult, I'm depressed, and never had a role model to look up to and I just don't know what to even do with my life.
Cut them out of your life ASAP. The sooner you do, the sooner you can start healing. If there's any around, join a gym and build yourself up. Rise from the ashes of the old you!
I'm trying to write a story that has both strong male and female characters and I'm doubtful it will get any traction due to how the media is pushing their poor materials.
All I gotta say is don't worry about the gender. Just work on your characters. Readers/audiences care more about the person's character rather than their gender.
I also want to add that you cant make strong women by making all the men around them useless and weak. That doesn’t make them strong, at best it makes them mediocre or sub par. If a hero is only as good as his strongest villains then a female protagonist should also be only as strong as the strongest men around her

Just because we do not cry does not mean we do not feel pain, just because we don't talk about our problems doesn't mean we don't feel burdened by them and just because we have strength it doesnt mean we will harm others with it. So what is it to be a man? It is not something that can be defined with words, it is what we are and we must answer that question by simply being ourselves.

Whats ridiculous about it all to me is that you can even have a "strong" female and a "weak" male as the leads and still have them both be awesome, well liked characters. My example of this would be Nier Automata's 2B and 9S. 9S isn't exactly "weak", but in comparison to 2B, he is. However it isn't shown in a demeaning way. And it lends to this extremely badass female character, and a male character who still feels "real", without talking down to anyone.

Yes, and that's not a good example. Strong female and strong male characters can coexist and work. What exactly does it gain us if a masculine female character is beating all the silly scripted male characters around her in a cool way? Also, such female characters don't feel powerful at all. They act as if strong male and female characters can't be together. I hate this.
It's why I enjoy eastern media in general so much more than western, because (as far as the games I play), eastern games want to tell a story, not make a social statement. I just don't understand why anyone would think that the only way to make yourself look better is by putting down and *oppressing* them, the exact stuff they accuse men off.
Agree. When a character, male or female, is 'truly' strong - they don't need to push the other down. Many characters from LOTR trilogy like Aragorn or Éowyn are good examples.

That's why I really enjoy stories set in history and classic fantasy novels. The male characters in there are mostly strong and something to admire. The female characters, if done well, they're depicted as strong as well while still being feminine. You know, the realistic depiction of most women from history. Take LOTR for example. You've got Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, Sam, Frodo, etc. They are strong male characters that aren't perfect and go through hell together. The females in that story, like Eowyn, Arwen and Galadriel are strong in their own right and have satisfying character arcs. The world is medieval and their roles in those stories make sense. They're respected as feminine characters and not fake masculine ones, which we see in so many bad stories these days. I relate to Eowyn and Arwen despite being a man. Their struggles make sense in the world they inhabit. I consider LOTR timeless, and I do not consider recent entertainment timeless.
One thing that I find disappointing in modern western media and in western society in general is that men are encouraged to be emotional, but only when that emotion is love or sadness. A man isn't allowed to get justifiably angry at something or someone anymore. There's a pressure for stoic men to be more vocal about feelings that would make them vulnerable, but if they get angry with their wife, they are now evil. Men frequently share their more tender feelings -- but it's not always verbal. It could just be in an expression or an action. And anger is a natural human reaction that shouldn't be demonized. True, being destructive because of your anger is unhealthy, but anger in itself is not unhealthy. Just as holding back emotion is not unhealthy. A stoic man is not a toxic one.

It is sad that now when I see a strong and/or competent man, I feel excited and elated. Its so uncommon now... I went back and watched an anime recently and it is so pleasant seeing truly good male characters
Yes. Strong male leads are important. I'm raising three boys who need to know that men are not stupid and dumb as portrayed in media. I'm tired of seeing men as weak minded individuals that are only comic relief. I want my boys to know that they can be strong and funny. This world has so many things backward. As a mom I have to be tough, but I receive negative comments because I raise my children to be independent and strong. Thank you for sharing this video. Very helpful .
As a husband and father now 40, I am old enough that the young guys are more like sons. And God, they are listless. I’m a master electrician, and my apprentices are young guys, 18, 20 years old. What they think a man should be is learned from media and school, because their own father was not in the home. They start out parroting this conception of being a man - they want to be aggressive, won’t own fuckups, overly emotional, shun responsibility. But it doesn’t take long for the dormant manhood in them to come out with a little persuasion. I had one young guy last summer who was making up for his lack of confidence with the “I don’t give a fuck” attitude. He would slow walk into the job, meander around, not pay attention, etc. I knew what I had to do. When a task came up that was important (running a wire tugger) I said out loud that this other guy should do it, the apprentice doesn’t want to be anything more than a gopher, getting materials and whatnot. I knew it would piss the kid off, and it did, he started arguing that no one teaches him anything, etc. I asked him if he was in my place, would he put any time into him? He stormed off to the break area, but I knew I had him. He even left the job early. I didn’t call him or anything, just waited to see if he could find his balls that night or not. Sure enough, he showed up the next morning and started putting in effort. I didn’t say anything about him leaving for a couple months. When it came time for his first report, he thought I was going to shit on him, but nope. I told him the truth. He has the ability, he has the smarts. He just needed to put some ass into it, and he’ll be a great electrician. These kids don’t have fatherly models. I’m not perfect, God knows. You don’t have to be. Young men today - just like throughout history - want to know when they bust their asses and take life’s punches on the chin that it is the right path for them. That it means something. That they are valuable and needed. Media used to supply this. When a super hero gets his ass kicked, or has to own up to his actions and words, even when it is far easier not to, that’s a life lesson. That is what men must do. That stubbornness and aggression every man has inside him is there for a reason, and a man must choose whether to turn it to good or evil. Modern media teaches these kids that their natural aggression and stubbornness is wrong, and that’s bullshit.
Man, I feel bad for non-Islamic people, not in a condescending way. Almost all of them don’t know what a man should be like. At least for us Muslim men, we have a clear role model who we should emulate, which is the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) - literally the greatest man who ever lived. I know the saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks (no offense, mister!), but I think you should read about him and learn from his wisdom. God knows all young men should. When I grew up I had Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Robin Williams and later Jackie Chan. What do these kids have now? RUclips influencers. Beta males who “transitioned”. Modern media telling them that traditional male masculinity is wrong and it should be shunned. No wonder so many kids today are messed up.

If you want a good old school example watch Paths of Glory (1957). It shows how a lawyer in the French army in WW1 is willing to stand up for what is right against his morally corrupt superiors and their selfish ambitions at the cost of innocent lives.
The problem here is that this so called "toxic mascunlity" are all the attributes that a true man needs. He needs to be aggressive to ward off threats to his home or family, he needs to know how to fight to protect friends, family and hearth, he needs to be strong so then others can loo up to him and hopefully inspire others to be strong. He needs to be in charge so then he can teach his offspring ho to be strong and give life lessons as well. Destroying what it is to be a man not only weakens him but it also damages his reproduction possablities or opens them up to explotation. You want a good equality movie then watch Aliens. Bes. I'm not talking ie ever made and says more about how euality works. I'm not saying look ay Ripley but more so how Vasquez and the rest of the marines interact.

Knowing how to fight is not toxic. If anything it makes you very respectable towards others because you know your own limits and how difficult it is to be a real fighter. If everybody knew how to fight (women included) the world would be a better place.
I’m so happy that woke media is finally starting to die off. Now that these executives have learned that just because you’re trying to represent all of the masses, doesn’t mean it always makes for a good storytelling or is going to be so main stream that everybody’s going to except it. There such a thing as trying to overcompensate, and just like you could argue that the male representation was overwhelming getting rid of it completely and killing off chivalry was not the best move either. Honestly, as a 25 year old man for the past decade, it felt like society has viewed me less than a person just because of how I was born. I remember my junior year of college I was called an overprivalleged white male that only harms society by existing when my life since high school has been work, pay your own college expenses,and taking care of my crippled father and my mother from losing their house. I don't consume the media that hates me, yet it is a culture war that has spread so far across all forms of media that it has become the norm. I've always struggled with my mental health, but nowadays I rather just not exist at all than be constantly attacked just for existing.
Excellent critique of the toxic environment against normalcy. During this time of attack on men, smaller media companies need to stand up and defend what is right. My small company is creating content that promotes the strengths of both men and women without demeaning either. What a concept.

Nowadays with western media so heavily falling into downplaying or demonizing men there are a few bastions of hope. I know you mentioned The Terminal List which was a great show that I absolutely loved every minute of. Also two more shows that do this are Jack Reacher and Invincible. Invincible was an incredible show that also got me extremely emotional with a strong, human male lead as well as Jack Reacher, a great thriller and action show that had an amazingly crafted plot. Both shows of course, had a second (and in Invincible’s case third) season green lit shortly after release. I honestly can’t recommend these shows more they’re so amazing.
A lot of people in the comments have told me to watch Reacher, which I will at some point now. Invincible was fun as hell too. That train scene in the last episode was nucking futs 😂

The thing is, as a women I grew up wanting to see more women in media I could relate too. Now, there's more women in media, but I can't relate to them, and now little boys are growing up with the same problems I had and girls are watching 'role-models' that encourage toxic behavior.
As a female, I hate it how men are portrayed nowadays. It's like an inverse to the 'Nuclear Family' stereotype from the 50s, except with the housewife as a bigot, while the husband does all the dirty work from her. I grew up with cartoons like Ben 10, TMNT 2012, Avengers Earth's Mighiest Heroes and video games like Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario and during teenhood Devil May Cry. They all have male protagonists that are well-written! In entertainment, it doesn't mean you're "woke" for having a female protagonist, or having LGBTQ themes and ethnicity, it's the botched execution.
Todays media has lost their mind. I worked in customer service nearly all my life and I know, the customer isn't always right. But you must never give them a reason to take their business else where. That's what the media is doing right now. Talking down and insulting their customers, but expecting them to just buy their product. Well, people are waking up and they're not having it anymore. That's why "Get woke, go broke" isn't just a meme, it's prophetic. And the numbers don't lie. These companies better realize that. Unless they don't care and the plan is to destroy western media.
I like Dimitri from three houses. Goes through the heroes journey if you choose his route. He has a period where he becomes lost, but due to other strong male figures around him, he picks himself back up and walks the path of a great king
Also Korean media is doing well right now. Train to Busan is focused on a male character who is flawed and selfish, putting business over work, but he grows past that to the point that the ending is downright something to cry at. AC Origins was good? I played through it twice and I actually hated Bayek. As a parent I can get on board with his story and desire for revenge immediately but as a writer? There is no growth for him throughout the story, and he usually helps reluctantly, openly stating at one point that he didn't even want to be a Medjay. There is not enough growth in him for it to be believable that he founds the Assassins, not when he spent the entire game basically hating everything they stood for and only using them. I actually found him to be pretty annoying as a lead, with nothing to endear him to me beyond annoyance that he was the lead.
Still a great show though besides came from Korean Man that show got hype on Philippines even though when it about zombies Like western people did about zombies back then in 90s
Crying/showing emotions/raising a kid/talking don't make you less of a man. Getting mental help doesn't make you less of a man. Not being a horn dog doesn't make you less of a man and I'm tired of the media and society saying otherwise.
I'm a martial arts sensei and am a big advocate for allowing young men and women to discover their strength, discipline and respect for themselves and each other. We are non biased, no discrimination, no politics, everyone trains with and spars with everyone of every sex and skill set. And always when I have some entitled teenager come into the dojo, a female most recently, I put them through their paces but still get the ego and attitude so then I break them down to less then zero, make them realise they are not special without trying, they are not just instantly superior to everyone else. I push the importance of hard work, concentration and the enjoyment and reward of years or a lifetime of hard training. To bring a true sense of brotherhood/sisterhood, equality, teamwork and drive. So for the me the current state of most media is appalling for youngsters and just backwards. I hope at least in the next few years we can get a return to form in the world of media, video games and fiction.
When I was a kid, my favourite hero was Sonic the Hedgehog, because he represented freedom, free-thinking and the refusal to bow to pointless rules, despite choosing to do the right thing all the times. Nowadays, I consider that my favourite heroes are Optimus Prime and Kamen Rider, the first one for being a good old-school Lawful Good hero, who also stands up for principles in an age of relativism; the second one because he shows that being a hero or a villain is a matter of choice. ALL Kamen Riders are villains who choose to be heroes, reason why I consider them the ultimate antidote against the victim mentality that plagues modern society.
In most cases I would say, insecurity, because the writers and creative team know that they could never measure up so they try to tear down everyone better than they are.

As a girl, i like that the entertainment industry has moved past the damsel in distress trope and seeing badass women onscreen is great. But “strong” female characters doing major stuff in a story without earning it feels stale. And i don’t like seeing female characters be nothing but a glorified trophy to save. I like media where there are well written male and female characters. Some of the characters i relate to the most are male and female ones. That’s part of the reason why some of my favourite pieces of media are chainsaw man, attack on titan and avatar the last airbender. How i feel about female characters must be how guys feel about male characters, but instead of a glorified trophy, it’s the “strong” female character’s punching bag. The Damsel in Distress conversation is always odd to me. Sure, there were some stories that portrayed a supposed "glorified trophy" but I'd argue that's not what women are even bothered by. Oftentimes, they just don't like Most times the woman isn't even shown as inept, simply caught in unfortunate circumstances. The male hero usually saves other men in those same series, but that doesn't mean they downplayed them. I'd argue women care less about being "glorified trophies" and more about not being as important or powerful in comparison. They don't want to ever be shown needing a man's help. Because the damsel thing is NEVER brought up when it's a woman saving a dude. Modern women dislike the trope, but also want a man that would do those exact things for them irl. It was usually never abt a woman being "weak", but emphasizing the sacrifices a man would go through to protect a woman, something biologically innate in men.
As a woman i like strong male and female characters and I think we need more of them especially the strong male characters like Batman , Spider Man and Iron Man and I hate weak male characters like Fred from Velma who’s reduced to a punching bag and made fun of because he’s a man and he’s a jerk and I’m tired of seeing characters like him
I think the issue with male vs female lead roles, is that it is very important for your lead character to have struggles, trials and tribulations. It’s easy to show a man’s flaws , but people think in order to be a strong female you can’t have any flaws. Therefore you don’t grow with the character you don’t learn to love them because you can’t relate. Look at how people love the protagonist from Alien. We saw her her struggle to get through a situation and people love her for it. Now look at characters like she hulk or even the female Hawkeye. We saw the struggles of the male leads for those roles, but somehow she hulk and female Hawkeye are beating up triad members with no training? Stop the cap lol

She-hulk did have character flaws, the writers are just so bad though, they made her extremely unlikable and the overall show just terrible. I don't get how they allowed this project to be released or who it was supposed to appeal to. Even though Ms. Marvel didn't get great viewing numbers, it's a much better show and wish it got more attention than whatever she-hulk was supposed to be.
Yes, I hate this. The fact that the female leads are perfect creates a great pressure on the audience. Girl viewers feel inadequate. She has no development, no thoughts or goals. Just beating someone by acting masculine and being perfectly beautiful is not writing good female characters. No one can learn anything from such characters. It's also disgusting that They're crushes each other to make male and female characters shine. That's why men and women who know a job very well in the society cannot take place together. Because people compare and try to show power. In the future, boys and girls will be our children in this society. Let's act accordingly and treat the opposite gender accordingly.... The other problem is that the media is not really trying to help women either. How can a flawless Mary Sue be an inspiration? They have no flaws, no arc, they are obnoxious, condescending and their physical prowess is often completely unrealistic. A 120 pound women cannot smack a 200 pound male around, physics will prevent this. There is no real character, there is no journey. How can women even relate to something like this? In essence the damage is done for both sexes. These journalists are dismantling the foundations of our society without a hint of understanding what they are doing.
I'm working on a crime thriller novel about a female detective, who represents a multi-gender team of profilers (basically, they talk to her via earpiece and see through her camera glasses), working alongside police and forensic technicians to catch a serial killer. I think I'm overly conscious about accidentally denigrating men or women (the super-detective who cracks the case is a woman, her stalker is a man, a female computer analyst succeeds where her male predecessor failed). One of the main characters is a man who's clinically depressed by all the anti-male stuff in media, and his move from sullen hopelessness to anger is shown as positive growth (his character arc is essentially throwing off anti-male messaging).
Those four reasons are fair to think “is this denigrating both genders?” but I wouldn’t worry about it, I’d worry more about “how do I execute this?” Because those type of characters can be done well through good writing. There’s nothing wrong with a female detective solving the big one. There’s plenty of female characters who solve big cases and mysteries like Veronica Mars, Clarice Starling, Nancy Drew, Enola Holmes, Daphne & Velma, etc. None of them did it without the help of others. I’d have the analyst make sure not make the same mistakes her predecessor did. Also this is just me I’d give her predecessor a reason he failed his job like if he was really stressed out or something major that cost him his job. Also your clinically depressed male character sounds like he has a lot of potential if what you say anger is a part of his growth. I’d have him become the man that most anti-male people like to ignore. Edit: Again this is just me, you don’t have to do these things, you do what you do with your book.

I've been noticing this issue myself in media (the recently released She Hulk was really bad for this - every man was portrayed as creepy, submissive or a total douche) the sooner we appreciate that men and women both have strengths and weaknesses and we see each other as equals, that's when we'll rise above all this bullshit. A great example of this i want to throw into the hat is the movie Edge of Tomorrow. Brilliant movie where Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise's characters equally kicked ass.
Huh? In She Hulk, Daredevil is a better lawyer, Bruce was right about being a superhero all along, Emile was more in tune with his emotions, and Pug was positive and supportive of everyone. The only bad male characters were the literal villains.
I remember reading someone's comment on another video. Basically he was saying how is it fair that fathers are teaching their sons to be gentlemen and strong for others but other parents are teaching their daughters to be independent and drilling that "I don't need men" in their brains.
You should definitely read the manga kengan ashura its not as popular as demon slayer but it is really relatable with its two characters tokita ohma and yamashita kazuo. yamashita going from a wimpy scared little, everyman character to a straight cool dude that dont care what anyone says about him makes me happy :)
It’s really sad how a lot of male characters are portrayed as either sexist, idiotic, or downright pathetic and inferior to female characters. I sometimes worry at some point in the future, it will be a female dominated world where men are looked down upon by women instead and portrayed as monsters who deserve to lose at life. The times where women are suppressed by men were terrible, but that is no excuse to just switch the roles so women can get payback. It just makes them no better or even worse than the men who discriminated against women.
the most recent unapologetic amazing male-female action movie is Top Gun Maverick. This is even more sweet for Ace Combat fan like myself. I think you should totally watch the movie & I would argue it's one of the best action drama movie so far. When one is accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression. Just because there are more “weak men” characters doesn’t mean there is a shortage of strong men to act as role models.
Growing up as a girl on media that made me believe that the best I have to offer in a relationship is sex wasn't fun. It's sad that now people are flipping the table over to harm young boys instead... I think I just wish intellectual and objective opinions like these were more prominent before to shield me from the damaged idea I have of sex and intimacy... At this point all of this is just too tangled and messed up for anyone to enjoy any media...
I think the one thing I dislike about Japanese media (such as video games and anime) is cool and interesting fantasy worlds almost always feature teenagers as the godslaying heroes going out on the epic adventures. Finding romance and developing as people. They will often act way mature and experienced for their age(atleast in terms of skills and abilities) and could easily be portrayed in their 20s or 30s and it would be more believeable. I know why this is the case though. So I'd ask to be spared another justification for it. I relate more with Nero from DMC5 as he's my age at 25 and is still on a journey to find himself. Nioh is also a good example with William being in his mid thirties yet goes on this epic adventure while also teaching alot of this typical time in Japan's history and religious beliefs. But overall I lack an adventure, open world game which a cast of main characters my age doing the previously mentioned things. Final Fantasy XIV is a close contender, but I'd rather have these JRPGs feature it instead. Sadly, the overall game I want dosen't exist yet. But maybe I should rant anymore on it.

Nier did this too with the Western version. The devs thought that western audiences might not like a Teenage protag, so they changed it to an older man in his late 30s, early-mid 40s and instead of a little sister, the female primary support character was his daughter. It accomplished two things, it made the relationship between the two alot more heartfelt because of how hard the father was working to keep his child healthy and alive as opposed to a sibling, and it made his anger and actions later in the game alot more harsh as it wasn't an angry young man lashing out, but a pissed off father who would _move the world_ to save his child.
That's japanese culture for you. They put a lot of emphasis on character growth at a young age that's just how it is, and it has the advantage of creating characters actual teenagers can easily relate to, through both their power fantasy and their internal struggles. Yes it's often silly but hey, at least they still put time and effort into creating their characters so it's definitely not all bad.
@@NorthWolf97 there's also a culture of remembering what it was to be young, not working etc. you've already gone through a lot of similar life expenience so it's not writing towards you. but much of these are marketed at kids and young adults who have the time. i find i don't play JRPG's because i simply don't have the time to do the grind any more. but i enjoy something like Dark souls because, it's grindy enough but the grind is based around skill and boss memorization. there are still stuff for adults though. but you'll see it in older works. for manga and anime your probably going to want to watch Seinen stuff. which is targeted more for adult men. at 30 it's hard to do a proper hero's journey without committing more to someone who's kinda already an expert in that field, especially in a culture which believes that you should already be well into your career at that point. this doesn't lead well to young upstart who goes to kill gods, rather when it's older media it's mid 20-mid 30's male who's already a badass or someone competent at their job. for example the Yakuza series follows someone highly competent already. if you wanted something light hearted wotokoi is more a rom com of japanese otaku who work in an office setting.
There's nothing wrong with damsels in distress - the damsels were not shown to be stupid or incompetent, and many of them displayed courage even when held captive.

Literally all media needs is to treat its characters like people no matter the gender and boom! A hit!
What is also lost in this issue is that young girls also need flawed heroes to look up to. Female "heroes" are portrayed as having no major flaws, and if they have a flaw it's actually a positive thing that people around them just don't understand. Boys and girls need to see flawed heroes who push through adversity and overcome challenges. Not just show up and win. Unfortunately it has gone in opposing directions. Female characters are often perfect and male characters often always wrong. Outside of the effect this has on young viewers, it makes for boring films/tv/games.
It also can negatively go in the opposite direction, by taking once exciting, larger than life characters and make them flawed for the sake of being flawed.
For example look at current day Lara Croft who has largely lost what once made her so appealing, and i'm not just talking about her sex appeal.

As a woman, I grew up with unrealistic standards for femininity due to poor representation in the media, it screwed me up real bad. Now as an adult, I'm watching my little brother go through the exact same thing with men in the media. It's heartbreaking. I never wanted anyone to go through the things I did and yet every single demon I struggled with as a teen has returned to plague my brother this time around.

Living with 5 sisters has the benefit of teaching him women are people, but it results in him needing as much guy time as possible or else he'll start feeling isolated in his own home.

I’m a woman. And I love seeing strong male role models. I can relate to them regards gender. You don’t have to only like female leads as role models if you are a girl yourself. This is why I loved ben 10 growing up and more male recommended audiences. Because usually the stories and characters were better and more mature. I was a bit of a Tomboy but loved girly stuff as well. I never had a mindset of ew men. Which thanks to my family, they raised me right.

What I mean is the volitive choice a person makes to align with the norms, values and behaviour of another one. As a boy, I grew up in the '80s and back then we had not quantity but at least quality on the 'strong female character' department (before they were called like that)... and I could identify with all of them, regardless of gender just like you. Princess Leia. Ellen Ripley. Sarah Connor. These were well written characters (back then) that I could understand and see as a role model because of their norms, values and behaviour, not their gender. That's actually what role models are about, ain't it? That said, I also think a very important question to ask is: what is the definition of STRONG men actually? One of the movies that really made an impact on me was 'Schindler's List', not because of the topic it displayed but the arc of Oskar Schindler (which Liam Neeson portrayed so masterfully): a man who had put himself atop the ladder of his world, saw the injustice of it and had the will and guts to act upon his change of heart, against much larger odds. That takes both strength and courage. His superpowers? Compassion and cunning. This character showed young me that 'with great power comes great responsibility' towards others, with real-world actions instead of spidey-senses. What I'm saying is, in an avalanche of super-powered characters in media, we maybe need more of these kind of role-models: the simple people that rise to a challenge and GROW throughout the process, showing us how to do it and why it is important to act upon it. So we can identify with their norms, values and behaviour, regardless of gender. My 2 cents.

That's because most people today have a divided/unbalanced/dualistic mindset which leads people to think and imagine things in a "us vs them", "me vs everyone else" type of thinking wich also leads to believing and seeing everything in a zero sum way. Basically if your not helping "us/me" then your helping "them/everyone else".
This is also due to a lack of objective Logic and of understanding or straight up willfull ignorance of Objective Morality leading to basing right and wrong on their personal feelings and idiologies. A moral person wouldn't base right or wrong on their own feelings or biases or they wouldn't care, let's say, if the victim of a crime was of a specific gender, they would only care who was the victimizer (the immoral one) and who was the victim (the one in the right).

I would also like to add that manga and anime has a lot of variety in the form of different types of stories that tend to different demographics, from comedy and slice-of-life to drama, crime, scifi, fantasy and a whole slew of other things. In the meantime western media seem hung up on the idea that one story should cater to everyone, and they concequently try to shoehorn _ALL_ the things into everything they make, slap on a "diversity and inclusivity" label and call it a day, with the end result being a mess that very few people likes. Then they attack their audience when things fail, and call them the negative buzzwords of the day before repeating the same mistake. In the meantime, if a manga doesn't succeed it gets booted out, and the creator have to go back to the drawing board (ha) and try again.

It's what happens when the usual suspects aren't the ones writing, producing and directing.
The protagonist went full circle and went to a fucking insane person, which I'm cool with. Yes, he was doing terrorist actions but I get why, doesn't stop him being wrong in almost putting innocent people in jeopardy, but I got it.
He was a very grey character. I understood 100% why he did what he did but I can also see from a civilian point of view, that dude was a true danger to society.
And that is what made the show good. Nobody was the good guy in that. Maybe in the beginning but further we went the more and more his actions became bad. Which he thought himself as well but he couldn't stop his mission because he literally had nothing left to lose but get his revenge.
The book series is pretty good.

I don't care about any of what came before if the game is interesting. This is why there needs to be a preface saying "It's not an attack to women, but actually it would suck because women just don't fit Yakuza as protagonists" which is just random and undeserved, skilled writers can do whatever they want and if Yakuza got to this point they'll make it work, I have that sort of trust.
Arcane is my favorite example of a show that has brilliantly written strong female characters without emasculating or reducing male characters to jokes or villains. The male characters are all as interesting, empowering and just all around badass and likeable without it being a competition with the female characters. On top of that the show is just a masterpiece in general and has inspired me to pursue animation and storytelling.

Absolutely agree. Each character in Arcane were incredibly well defined just on their own. Some might have a backstory with another, but you don't need a backstory for just the characterization. Each one could have their own story that Never mentions another established character, and Still be good characters. And to be able to mesh these characters together so that they play off each other, and help each other grow as characters in the world building is Such a difficult task to do in writing.
I went in to Arcane expecting it to be shit, and to tear it a new asshole. But after 10 minutes I completely forgot about that and was just engrossed in the characters, world, story.

While I appreciate that more male characters are written to show emotions and vulnerability more often these days, a lot of female characters are unfortunately written to be the exact opposite... They show very little vulnerability and have barely any flaws. I suspect that some writers may be afraid to write female characters who can be emotional and sensitive due to the stereotype of women being 'overly emotional', because having emotions is 'weak' apparently...? 😐
Personally, I believe it's very important for people and especially impressionable children to have great female AND male role models to look up to, in the real world as well as the media.

The demonization of "strong Men" in Western Media has made me completely move to watching mostly Asian Movies/TV Shows and playing older video games (playing through the Yakuza Series for the 1st time from 0-Like a Dragon. Currently on Yakuza 3 remastered) or being VERY selective with which new games to purchase.

As a woman, I am beginning the find the strong flawless woman types kinda boring, and not as relatable, I was recently replaying the Witcher 3 for the second time and I found myself relating more to gearlt than any modern female lead the media can produce. And I am also playing through neir automata, with both a male and female lead, 2b and 9s, both of them relatable, and flawed, and strong in their own ways. Pleas bring back flawed leads, of both genders.

@@peridotpockygod.9080 Amazing point. I think the overriding issue is that Hollywood/Western writing either party or fully because of “3rd wave feminism” don’t know how to write compelling but flawed (aka relatable) female Characters (I think Lara Croft in the recent trilogy is a huge exception).
They can only write either “Mary Sue” characters *cough Captain Marvel and Rey from Star Wars cough* or completely demonize even straight man around that character.
In my mind that does BOTH sexes a huge disservice. Personally I love good compelling storytelling regardless of the characters gender but will completely avoid any content that’s going to preach/talk down to me because I’m a man.

personally i think that Guts from berserk is the perfect example of how to write a strong, sure his power and strength is extreme and godlike compared to normal humans of the series he swings a sword that weigh more than 100kg or about 300lbs but he struggles so much that earth is like hell for him
he is really emotional and is driven by his feelings for vengeance and is probably fiction’s most tragic character but he still keeps on going.
his love Casca was a strong but emotional female character that struggled.

As a female and mother to two girls and 2 boys....I've tried so hard to be a good role model for all 4. But it's so hard as a single mom to teach the boys to be strong males when I'm not a male. They know that women are strong, flawed and resilient and human. I don't have anyone around anymore that was teaching them how to be a strong flawed male human in today's world that teaches them they're irrelevant and toxic as their future step dad had passed from cancer last year. They had two years with him and learned a lot but not enough in today's world.

I feel like of all forms of media, Novels suffer from this topic the least. If you're looking for refreshing media that depicts male and female characters equally as humans first and gender/sexuality aren't as important, I'd recommend picking up a Brandon Sanderson novel sometime. Character writing is something he excels in, and especially in the Mistborn series, the characters feel refreshingly human. Even when he writes characters who are overtly feminist, they do so in a way that empowers female characters without degrading male ones, and his writing never once talks down to its audience.
Edit: Particularly Era 2, the Wax and Wayne series. The first doesn't struggle with strong men but does struggle with strong women that aren't its protagonist
Kaladin is one of the most badass written characters ever. Sanderson is working on pure magic with him.

Mangas such as Berserk, Sun Ken Rock, Holyland, Vagabond, Vinland Saga etc. Are filled with strong men and i recommend anyone who hasn't seen any of them or have seen a few of them should check out the rest. I highly recommend them because they inspired and taught me lots of good things
And Cyborg 009, don't forget about that. The titular character as well as the cast as a whole has many strong male characters. It's also one of the most influential manga in history, so there's that as well.

You showed the clip of Aloy telling the cook to stand up for himself. And I think one of the biggest things over looked in Horizon is Rost. How important Rost is to Aloy. How Rost taught her everything she knows. His guidance made her the capable young woman she is today.
When you mentioned how "Batman Begins" is about a flawed Bruce Wayne overcoming his fears and trauma to become something more, I thought of "The Batman" and how it shows a similar message. In this movie, Bruce's actions lead to the creation of the Riddler, his trauma and fear giving him the misguided idea that he must be Vengeance to strike fear in the hearts of the criminals.
But by doing so he only makes things worst and Gotham only begins healing once he goes past his flaw, face his trauma and understands that he CANNOT be anger and fear, he must rise above it. He must be the hope for the fearful, the light that shines through to the lost souls of a decayed city.
I am really glad that they took such a risk and made Batman a flawed, yet good man. It makes me hopeful that even though there's this trend of making weak men in media, some people still strive to do better and give us heroes to strive towards. "The Batman" shows us perfectly how a flawed man can rise above his weaknesses and become something greater and I hope more young boys took it as an example on what to become.

The Batman was much better than I thought it would be. Kudos to the filmmakers for not making Selina Kyle some perfect invincible grrrrl power character either. She's believable, has flaws, takes hits, and doesn't just automatically win everything, much like Batman himself.
Its a brilliant movie ,a very well done Bruce Wayne and Batman.It gives you a feeling of hope , the want to do good and help others.The last scenes of Batman helping the civilians in flood was so symbolic and beautiful.

I've become very skeptical of female led medias, games and tv/movies, because of this. Besides Horizon, tomb raider, and single player games to customize myself as female, I rarely engage in other female games. Like you said, it's demeaning and insulting to see men get put down and neutered in the pursuit of female empowerment. I used to love the marvel movies, but I haven't seen a single female led superhero movie (watched Black Widow because of friends) because they are always terrible. Why would men watch or engage in media that actively insults and disrespects them?

If I have a son - or Hell, a child of any sex - I will surround them with the best possible media. Tell them stories about earning rewards through effort; treating others with compassion; thinking on your feet; etc.

Even Horizon Zero Dawn depicts men as either weak, evil, or effeminate. The only remotely good male character there is Erend and even then he is depicted as being lesser than his sister.

The funny thing is, there were some jokes on men I actually enjoyed, because I thought they were simply that, just jokes, and not some subtle and smug way of passing the same old anti-men message. I mean, laughing and poking fun at male characters can be really entertaining, but not so much when behind the jokes there is an actual intent to look down on and ridicule a certain social group.

My mom raised me on an extreme version of this, being her only son of 3 children. She beat me every day for years, me alone. She told me constantly how men are terrible and women are amazing and can do no wrong. That looking at a woman and thinking she was pretty, even, was pure evil. My sister joined in on all this, beating me in turn, knowing that if I fought back I would be beat more by my mother because "you never hit a woman"
My farther was always gone, and now that I'm an adult, I'm depressed, and never had a role model to look up to and I just don't know what to even do with my life.

Whats ridiculous about it all to me is that you can even have a "strong" female and a "weak" male as the leads and still have them both be awesome, well liked characters. My example of this would be Nier Automata's 2B and 9S. 9S isn't exactly "weak", but in comparison to 2B, he is. However it isn't shown in a demeaning way. And it lends to this extremely badass female character, and a male character who still feels "real", without talking down to anyone.

What exactly does it gain us if a masculine female character is beating all the silly scripted male characters around her in a cool way? Also, such female characters don't feel powerful at all. It's why I enjoy eastern media in general so much more than western, because (as far as the games I play), eastern games want to tell a story, not make a social statement.

Agree. When a character, male or female, is 'truly' strong - they don't need to push the other down. Many characters from LOTR trilogy like Aragorn or Éowyn are good examples.

That's why I really enjoy stories set in history and classic fantasy novels. The male characters in there are mostly strong and something to admire. The female characters, if done well, they're depicted as strong as well while still being feminine. You know, the realistic depiction of most women from history.
Take LOTR for example. You've got Aragorn, Boromir, Faramir, Sam, Frodo, etc. They are strong male characters that aren't perfect and go through hell together. The females in that story, like Eowyn, Arwen and Galadriel are strong in their own right and have satisfying character arcs. The world is medieval and their roles in those stories make sense. They're respected as feminine characters and not fake masculine ones, which we see in so many bad stories these days. I relate to Eowyn and Arwen despite being a man. Their struggles make sense in the world they inhabit. I consider LOTR timeless, and I do not consider recent entertainment timeless.
One thing that I find disappointing in modern western media and in western society in general is that men are encouraged to be emotional, but only when that emotion is love or sadness. A man isn't allowed to get justifiably angry at something or someone anymore. There's a pressure for stoic men to be more vocal about feelings that would make them vulnerable, but if they get angry with their wife, they are now evil. Men frequently share their more tender feelings -- but it's not always verbal. It could just be in an expression or an action. And anger is a natural human reaction that shouldn't be demonized. True, being destructive because of your anger is unhealthy, but anger in itself is not unhealthy. Just as holding back emotion is not unhealthy. A stoic man is not a toxic one.

Yes. Strong male leads are important. I'm raising three boys who need to know that men are not stupid and dumb as portrayed in media. I'm tired of seeing men as weak minded individuals that are only comic relief. I want my boys to know that they can be strong and funny. This world has so many things backward. As a husband and father now 40, I am old enough that the young guys are more like sons. And God, they are listless.
I’m a master electrician, and my apprentices are young guys, 18, 20 years old. What they think a man should be is learned from media and school, because their own father was not in the home. They start out parroting this conception of being a man - they want to be aggressive, won’t own fuckups, overly emotional, shun responsibility. But it doesn’t take long for the dormant manhood in them to come out with a little persuasion.
I had one young guy last summer who was making up for his lack of confidence with the “I don’t give a fuck” attitude. He would slow walk into the job, meander around, not pay attention, etc. I knew what I had to do. When a task came up that was important (running a wire tugger) I said out loud that this other guy should do it, the apprentice doesn’t want to be anything more than a gopher, getting materials and whatnot. I knew it would piss the kid off, and it did, he started arguing that no one teaches him anything, etc. I asked him if he was in my place, would he put any time into him? He stormed off to the break area, but I knew I had him. He even left the job early. I didn’t call him or anything, just waited to see if he could find his balls that night or not. Sure enough, he showed up the next morning and started putting in effort. I didn’t say anything about him leaving for a couple months. When it came time for his first report, he thought I was going to shit on him, but nope. I told him the truth. He has the ability, he has the smarts. He just needed to put some ass into it, and he’ll be a great electrician.
These kids don’t have fatherly models. I’m not perfect, God knows. You don’t have to be. Young men today - just like throughout history - want to know when they bust their asses and take life’s punches on the chin that it is the right path for them. That it means something. That they are valuable and needed. Media used to supply this. When a super hero gets his ass kicked, or has to own up to his actions and words, even when it is far easier not to, that’s a life lesson. That is what men must do. That stubbornness and aggression every man has inside him is there for a reason, and a man must choose whether to turn it to good or evil. Modern media teaches these kids that their natural aggression and stubbornness is wrong, and that’s bullshit.
Man, I feel bad for non-Islamic people, not in a condescending way. Almost all of them don’t know what a man should be like. At least for us Muslim men, we have a clear role model who we should emulate, which is the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) - literally the greatest man who ever lived.
I know the saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks (no offense, mister!), but I think you should read about him and learn from his wisdom. God knows all young men should.

If you want a good old school example watch Paths of Glory (1957). It shows how a lawyer in the French army in WW1 is willing to stand up for what is right against his morally corrupt superiors and their selfish ambitions at the cost of innocent lives.
The problem here is that this so called "toxic mascunlity" are all the attributes that a true man needs. He needs to be aggressive to ward off threats to his home or family, he needs to know how to fight to protect friends, family and hearth, he needs to be strong so then others can loo up to him and hopefully inspire others to be strong. He needs to be in charge so then he can teach his offspring ho to be strong and give life lessons as well. Destroying what it is to be a man not only weakens him but it also damages his reproduction possablities or opens them up to explotation. You want a good equality movie then watch Aliens. Bes. I'm not talking ie ever made and says more about how euality works. I'm not saying look ay Ripley but more so how Vasquez and the rest of the marines interact.

I’m so happy that woke media is finally starting to die off. Now that these executives have learned that just because you’re trying to represent all of the masses, doesn’t mean it always makes for a good storytelling or is going to be so main stream that everybody’s going to except it. Honestly, as a 25 year old man for the past decade, it felt like society has viewed me less than a person just because of how I was born. I remember my junior year of college I was called an overprivalleged white male that only harms society by existing when my life since high school has been work, pay your own college expenses,and taking care of my crippled father and my mother from losing their house. I don't consume the media that hates me, yet it is a culture war that has spread so far across all forms of media that it has become the norm. I've always struggled with my mental health, but nowadays I rather just not exist at all than be constantly attacked just for existing.

Nowadays with western media so heavily falling into downplaying or demonizing men there are a few bastions of hope. I know you mentioned The Terminal List which was a great show that I absolutely loved every minute of. Also two more shows that do this are Jack Reacher and Invincible. Invincible was an incredible show that also got me extremely emotional with a strong, human male lead as well as Jack Reacher, a great thriller and action show that had an amazingly crafted plot. Both shows of course, had a second (and in Invincible’s case third) season green lit shortly after release. I honestly can’t recommend these shows more they’re so amazing.

The thing is, as a women I grew up wanting to see more women in media I could relate too. Now, there's more women in media, but I can't relate to them, and now little boys are growing up with the same problems I had and girls are watching 'role-models' that encourage toxic behavior.
As a female, I hate it how men are portrayed nowadays. It's like an inverse to the 'Nuclear Family' stereotype from the 50s, except with the housewife as a bigot, while the husband does all the dirty work from her. I grew up with cartoons like Ben 10, TMNT 2012, Avengers Earth's Mighiest Heroes and video games like Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario and during teenhood Devil May Cry. They all have male protagonists that are well-written! In entertainment, it doesn't mean you're "woke" for having a female protagonist, or having LGBTQ themes and ethnicity, it's the botched execution.
Ok, then give me one example of these "female" characters that have a biggoted opinion please.
Todays media has lost their mind. I worked in customer service nearly all my life and I know, the customer isn't always right. But you must never give them a reason to take their business else where. That's what the media is doing right now. Talking down and insulting their customers, but expecting them to just buy their product. Well, people are waking up and they're not having it anymore.
That's why "Get woke, go broke" isn't just a meme, it's prophetic. And the numbers don't lie. These companies better realize that. Unless they don't care and the plan is to destroy western media.
I like Dimitri from three houses. Goes through the heroes journey if you choose his route. He has a period where he becomes lost, but due to other strong male figures around him, he picks himself back up and walks the path of a great king
Also Korean media is doing well right now. Train to Busan is focused on a male character who is flawed and selfish, putting business over work, but he grows past that to the point that the ending is downright something to cry at.
AC Origins was good? I played through it twice and I actually hated Bayek. As a parent I can get on board with his story and desire for revenge immediately but as a writer? There is no growth for him throughout the story, and he usually helps reluctantly, openly stating at one point that he didn't even want to be a Medjay. There is not enough growth in him for it to be believable that he founds the Assassins, not when he spent the entire game basically hating everything they stood for and only using them. I actually found him to be pretty annoying as a lead, with nothing to endear him to me beyond annoyance that he was the lead.

I'm a martial arts sensei and am a big advocate for allowing young men and women to discover their strength, discipline and respect for themselves and each other. We are non biased, no discrimination, no politics, everyone trains with and spars with everyone of every sex and skill set. And always when I have some entitled teenager come into the dojo, a female most recently, I put them through their paces but still get the ego and attitude so then I break them down to less then zero, make them realise they are not special without trying, they are not just instantly superior to everyone else. I push the importance of hard work, concentration and the enjoyment and reward of years or a lifetime of hard training. To bring a true sense of brotherhood/sisterhood, equality, teamwork and drive.
So for the me the current state of most media is appalling for youngsters and just backwards. I hope at least in the next few years we can get a return to form in the world of media, video games and fiction.

When I was a kid, my favourite hero was Sonic the Hedgehog, because he represented freedom, free-thinking and the refusal to bow to pointless rules, despite choosing to do the right thing all the times. Nowadays, I consider that my favourite heroes are Optimus Prime and Kamen Rider, the first one for being a good old-school Lawful Good hero, who also stands up for principles in an age of relativism; the second one because he shows that being a hero or a villain is a matter of choice. ALL Kamen Riders are villains who choose to be heroes, reason why I consider them the ultimate antidote against the victim mentality that plagues modern society.
In most cases I would say, insecurity, because the writers and creative team know that they could never measure up so they try to tear down everyone better than they are.
I thought I was the only one who notice this change.
From the get go I have been a social commentary channel, I am now embracing it. I will talk about Elden ring etc when there’s news. But I don’t want to limit myself to any one particular game or genre.

As a girl, i like that the entertainment industry has moved past the damsel in distress trope and seeing badass women onscreen is great. But “strong” female characters doing major stuff in a story without earning it feels stale. And i don’t like seeing female characters be nothing but a glorified trophy to save. I like media where there are well written male and female characters. Some of the characters i relate to the most are male and female ones. That’s part of the reason why some of my favourite pieces of media are chainsaw man, attack on titan and avatar the last airbender. How i feel about female characters must be how guys feel about male characters, but instead of a glorified trophy, it’s the “strong” female character’s punching bag.

The Damsel in Distress conversation is always odd to me. Sure, there were some stories that portrayed a supposed "glorified trophy" but I'd argue that's not what women are even bothered by. Oftentimes, they just don't like
Most times the woman isn't even shown as inept, simply caught in unfortunate circumstances. The male hero usually saves other men in those same series, but that doesn't mean they downplayed them.
I'd argue women care less about being "glorified trophies" and more about not being as important or powerful in comparison. They don't want to ever be shown needing a man's help. Because the damsel thing is NEVER brought up when it's a woman saving a dude.
Modern women dislike the trope, but also want a man that would do those exact things for them irl. It was usually never abt a woman being "weak", but emphasizing the sacrifices a man would go through to protect a woman, something biologically innate in men.
As a woman i like strong male and female characters and I think we need more of them especially the strong male characters like Batman , Spider Man and Iron Man and I hate weak male characters like Fred from Velma who’s reduced to a punching bag and made fun of because he’s a man and he’s a jerk and I’m tired of seeing characters like him
I think the issue with male vs female lead roles, is that it is very important for your lead character to have struggles, trials and tribulations. It’s easy to show a man’s flaws , but people think in order to be a strong female you can’t have any flaws. Therefore you don’t grow with the character you don’t learn to love them because you can’t relate.
Look at how people love the protagonist from Alien. We saw her her struggle to get through a situation and people love her for it. Now look at characters like she hulk or even the female Hawkeye. We saw the struggles of the male leads for those roles, but somehow she hulk and female Hawkeye are beating up triad members with no training? Stop the cap lol

She-hulk did have character flaws, the writers are just so bad though, they made her extremely unlikable and the overall show just terrible. I don't get how they allowed this project to be released or who it was supposed to appeal to. Even though Ms. Marvel didn't get great viewing numbers, it's a much better show and wish it got more attention than whatever she-hulk was supposed to be.
Yes, I hate this. The fact that the female leads are perfect creates a great pressure on the audience. Girl viewers feel inadequate. She has no development, no thoughts or goals. Just beating someone by acting masculine and being perfectly beautiful is not writing good female characters. No one can learn anything from such characters. It's also disgusting that They're crushes each other to make male and female characters shine. That's why men and women who know a job very well in the society cannot take place together. Because people compare and try to show power. In the future, boys and girls will be our children in this society. Let's act accordingly and treat the opposite gender accordingly.... The other problem is that the media is not really trying to help women either. How can a flawless Mary Sue be an inspiration? They have no flaws, no arc, they are obnoxious, condescending and their physical prowess is often completely unrealistic. A 120 pound women cannot smack a 200 pound male around, physics will prevent this. There is no real character, there is no journey. How can women even relate to something like this?
In essence the damage is done for both sexes. These journalists are dismantling the foundations of our society without a hint of understanding what they are doing.
I'm working on a crime thriller novel about a female detective, who represents a multi-gender team of profilers (basically, they talk to her via earpiece and see through her camera glasses), working alongside police and forensic technicians to catch a serial killer. I think I'm overly conscious about accidentally denigrating men or women (the super-detective who cracks the case is a woman, her stalker is a man, a female computer analyst succeeds where her male predecessor failed). One of the main characters is a man who's clinically depressed by all the anti-male stuff in media, and his move from sullen hopelessness to anger is shown as positive growth (his character arc is essentially throwing off anti-male messaging).
Those four reasons are fair to think “is this denigrating both genders?” but I wouldn’t worry about it, I’d worry more about “how do I execute this?” Because those type of characters can be done well through good writing.
There’s nothing wrong with a female detective solving the big one. There’s plenty of female characters who solve big cases and mysteries like Veronica Mars, Clarice Starling, Nancy Drew, Enola Holmes, Daphne & Velma, etc. None of them did it without the help of others.
I’d have the analyst make sure not make the same mistakes her predecessor did. Also this is just me I’d give her predecessor a reason he failed his job like if he was really stressed out or something major that cost him his job.
Also your clinically depressed male character sounds like he has a lot of potential if what you say anger is a part of his growth. I’d have him become the man that most anti-male people like to ignore.
Edit: Again this is just me, you don’t have to do these things, you do what you do with your book.

I've been noticing this issue myself in media (the recently released She Hulk was really bad for this - every man was portrayed as creepy, submissive or a total douche) the sooner we appreciate that men and women both have strengths and weaknesses and we see each other as equals, that's when we'll rise above all this bullshit. A great example of this i want to throw into the hat is the movie Edge of Tomorrow. Brilliant movie where Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise's characters equally kicked ass.
Huh? In She Hulk, Daredevil is a better lawyer, Bruce was right about being a superhero all along, Emile was more in tune with his emotions, and Pug was positive and supportive of everyone. The only bad male characters were the literal villains.

I remember reading someone's comment on another video. Basically he was saying how is it fair that fathers are teaching their sons to be gentlemen and strong for others but other parents are teaching their daughters to be independent and drilling that "I don't need men" in their brains.

You should definitely read the manga kengan ashura its not as popular as demon slayer but it is really relatable with its two characters tokita ohma and yamashita kazuo. yamashita going from a wimpy scared little, everyman character to a straight cool dude that dont care what anyone says about him makes me happy :)

It’s really sad how a lot of male characters are portrayed as either sexist, idiotic, or downright pathetic and inferior to female characters. I sometimes worry at some point in the future, it will be a female dominated world where men are looked down upon by women instead and portrayed as monsters who deserve to lose at life. The times where women are suppressed by men were terrible, but that is no excuse to just switch the roles so women can get payback. It just makes them no better or even worse than the men who discriminated against women.

Just because there are more “weak men” characters doesn’t mean there is a shortage of strong men to act as role models.
Finally someone with some common sense
Growing up as a girl on media that made me believe that the best I have to offer in a relationship is sex wasn't fun. It's sad that now people are flipping the table over to harm young boys instead... I think I just wish intellectual and objective opinions like these were more prominent before to shield me from the damaged idea I have of sex and intimacy... At this point all of this is just too tangled and messed up for anyone to enjoy any media...
I think the one thing I dislike about Japanese media (such as video games and anime) is cool and interesting fantasy worlds almost always feature teenagers as the godslaying heroes going out on the epic adventures. Finding romance and developing as people. They will often act way mature and experienced for their age(atleast in terms of skills and abilities) and could easily be portrayed in their 20s or 30s and it would be more believeable.
I know why this is the case though. So I'd ask to be spared another justification for it.
I relate more with Nero from DMC5 as he's my age at 25 and is still on a journey to find himself. Nioh is also a good example with William being in his mid thirties yet goes on this epic adventure while also teaching alot of this typical time in Japan's history and religious beliefs.
But overall I lack an adventure, open world game which a cast of main characters my age doing the previously mentioned things. Final Fantasy XIV is a close contender, but I'd rather have these JRPGs feature it instead.
Sadly, the overall game I want dosen't exist yet. But maybe I should rant anymore on it.

Nier did this too with the Western version. The devs thought that western audiences might not like a Teenage protag, so they changed it to an older man in his late 30s, early-mid 40s and instead of a little sister, the female primary support character was his daughter. It accomplished two things, it made the relationship between the two alot more heartfelt because of how hard the father was working to keep his child healthy and alive as opposed to a sibling, and it made his anger and actions later in the game alot more harsh as it wasn't an angry young man lashing out, but a pissed off father who would _move the world_ to save his child.
That's japanese culture for you. They put a lot of emphasis on character growth at a young age that's just how it is, and it has the advantage of creating characters actual teenagers can easily relate to, through both their power fantasy and their internal struggles.
Yes it's often silly but hey, at least they still put time and effort into creating their characters so it's definitely not all bad.

@@NorthWolf97 there's also a culture of remembering what it was to be young, not working etc. you've already gone through a lot of similar life expenience so it's not writing towards you. but much of these are marketed at kids and young adults who have the time. i find i don't play JRPG's because i simply don't have the time to do the grind any more. but i enjoy something like Dark souls because, it's grindy enough but the grind is based around skill and boss memorization.
there are still stuff for adults though. but you'll see it in older works. for manga and anime your probably going to want to watch Seinen stuff. which is targeted more for adult men.
at 30 it's hard to do a proper hero's journey without committing more to someone who's kinda already an expert in that field, especially in a culture which believes that you should already be well into your career at that point. this doesn't lead well to young upstart who goes to kill gods, rather when it's older media it's mid 20-mid 30's male who's already a badass or someone competent at their job. for example the Yakuza series follows someone highly competent already. if you wanted something light hearted wotokoi is more a rom com of japanese otaku who work in an office setting.
There's nothing wrong with damsels in distress - the damsels were not shown to be stupid or incompetent, and many of them displayed courage even when held captive.
I'm surprised you didn't bring up Cobra Kai on Netflix. It's pretty pro-male without diminishing the women in the show at all.
