    Bladewolf has to be my favourite. He goes under the same journey of finding his own identity and discovering true freedom like Raiden in MGS2.
    Forced to be a killer despite being kinda bad at it because he lacks the killer instinct humans can have is something I hardly see. Usually, machines are portayed as more efficient killers because of a lack of morality, but never as less efficient killers because of their commitment to logic.
    And despite Raiden's... very mixed views of A.I.s (and for good reason if you've played MGS2) he chooses to help Bladewolf by freeing him of his range inhibitor and memory wipe, his digital shackles, if you will.
    After that, Bladewolf chooses to help Raiden. It's HIS choice. And as he learns from him, he overrides his own directives. He literally states he's gone through character development! You could say he's His Own Master Now! He even almost quotes Raiden word for word from MGS4!
    Vamp: "You too... immortal?"
    Raiden: "No... I just don't fear death."
    Armstrong: "Make no mistake, Fido. When I'm finished with him... you're next."
    Bladewolf: "I was not designed to fear termination."
    Also he's a robot wolf with a chainsaw, making him the coolest thing in the game. Come on, people!
    **TIME TO LEAVE THEM ALL BEHIIIIIIIIIIIND!**

      I LOVE that you approach the topic of memes and selfish genes. I am studying International Relations, just as you have and am trying to find a theory of memetic reproduction for this field of study. I guess it would be something poststructuralist or liberal theory since it also has to do with institutions and ideas (so maybe international law would be a good case study itself) but I am not too sure. Let me know if you have any idea for a good starting point.

    REASON: NANOMACHINES, SON!!
    Favorite MGR song: It Has To Be This Way
    REASON: STANDING HERE, I REALIZE YOU WERE JUST LIKE ME, TRYING TO MAKE HISTORY
    Armstrong is a character that you can both love and hate for the same reason. He only appears at the final chapter and hey IMO he stole the show by being such an over-the-top bureaucrat. His speech is the literal definition of American Exceptionalism. Funny how Armstrong somehow foreshadows Donald Trump, or maybe it's just a coincidence

    Another great thing about MGR:R soundtrack is that lyrics of songs describe the characters in a way f.ex Sam losing his own agenda and becoming a tool of war, Khamsin being a soldier blindly following orders and even losing his moral compass as a mercenary ("Without a compass, The soldier knows no disgrace")etc.

    • @MrGksarathy

  • @ordohereticus3427
    @ordohereticus3427 2 года назад +21

    Favourite character? Probably Sam. There was a simplicity juxtaposed with complexity to his character. Almost as though he saw Raiden as the epitome of his core ideals, ones that he had suppressed in service of Armstrong’s might is right (due to having lost), but then really pushing and challenging Raiden to see if those ideals could prevail, even if it meant Sam’s own death. Additionally, the soundtrack for him, The Only Thing I Know For Real, is very fitting.
    I think this game had an excellent, heavy and catchy soundtrack on the whole, even if a bit lyrically cheesy at certain points. Favourite track would have to be Red Sun.
    Game is also awesome. Over the top hack’n’slash mayhem but with a great plot and narrative. Very overtly critical of the things being targeted.

    I feel like Sundowner is my favourite character out of this game not because he's the coolest but who I like most as a villain.
    The others are either victims of circumstances or seeking to improve something in the world and yet here we have a sociopathic war monger who embodies what the American war machine looks like. He uses symbols of war and revolution (the samurai/Japanese aesthetic and machete blades) but is only concerned with the killing. He doesn't care what war will bring but the sadistic pleasure he'll have. Sundowner is an irredeemable villain and I enjoy beating him down

He just wants to be free and not live like a caged dog for Desperado. Sunny is cool because she went from a kid that had never touched grass and only lived in Patriots facilities or with Snake and Otacon and becomes a brilliant scientist and makes rockets for the MGS universe equivalent of SpaceX. She is like Elon Musk if he didn't suck
    My favorite song is Mistral's one "A Stranger I Remain" because it provides more subtext for her characters than the others. She is Merasult from The Stranger if he got Cyborg Hecatonchires Arms instead of being executed

  • @Kligor2
    @Kligor2 2 года назад +3

    If we're talking from a game design standpoint I love Mistral so much. The cold wind of france being beaten and frozen solid is such an eat touch and her abilities are some of the more unique ones in the game. Her background being similar to Raiden yet a completely different outcome makes a really neat fight.
    From a personality standpoint? Sam. A good guy turned bad and yet still not FULLY on board with everything, not using cheap tactics or trying to overwhelm you. He just wants to have an honorable duel and get it over with.
    As for song, Hot Wind is Blowing cause of how well it personifies Khamsin.

  • @rustkitty
    @rustkitty Год назад

    I don't like making this "Dawkins meme" distinction, because "Internet memes" are just memes that propagate through social media posts. They are so diverse there is no other consistent definition. It's all the same thing, small pieces of culture that can be spread via communication and mutated by human intention or misfiring cognitive processes. If anyone enjoys SCP Foundation, thinking about "memetics" (also see the _Understanding Memetics_ essay) can be helpful in getting rid of the mental stigma. It's not like the meme concept is uniquely shackled to the selfish gene theory either, for example a few years later sci-fi author Philip K. Dick independently derived basically the same concept through a theosophical route in his schizobiographical novel VALIS just using a different term.

    so I believe that that shining City On a Hill quote from both Reagan and Obama is actually a really culturally resonate quote here in the US and if my memory of grade school serves me well, then it originated from some of the first European people to come and colonize the US, they came mostly (obviously) because of religious persecution, so for some reason the quote feels like it came from some big name protestant way way back in the day, and for some reason it also seems like something the founder of mormonism repeated a number of times, but yeah that's very literally the way a large number of us Americans see our country, Id say its a primarily right wing, American traditionalists way of looking at things, but ofc, Obama and many liberals see the US State the same way...

    It is 100% the more accessible version of pathologic, so if you (like me) watched hbomberguy's vid on pathologic but just couldn't get into the game, play we happy few. Then try to start playing pathologic 2 30 more times (like me).

    Oh god, Metal Gear, while the gameplay is great, the story is dumb as hell and massively overrated.
    This is a story where a guy gets his hand cut off, has a replacement grafted on and the personality of this grafted hand takes over his body. Except it doesn't, because he just hypnotised himself into thinking that it did.

The thing so called realistic stories try to avoid or hide in 20 layers of subtext that original meaning is lost.

    I honestly think it's just a simpler thing than that. One streamer tried this older game that they had previously skipped, found it's actually rather fun, and then a bunch of other streamers who had also skipped it jumped on the bandwagon and are finding that, yeah, it's a fairly solid title. And over the top as shit.
    Yes, the politics are worth discussing, but the new popularity of the game is not because of that, I don't think.

    • @feister2869
      @feister2869 2 года назад

      No, it’s exactly because of it. The popular memes of the game and the shitposts of the fan base as well as the very delightful streamers losing their fucking marbles over this games batshit insane stuff. You can see that the game has a growing audience till today with the example of many vod channels having metal gear rising streams as their top video. I literally can’t get out of the fandom. So no, this wasn’t temporary popularity unlike many games today. But a growing seed that just grows continuously until there’s a sequel (that won’t happen :( ).

      @@feister2869 No, no, I didn't mean to imply it's temporary. Streamers copying each other, either just for the views, or because of genuine interest. And face it, the game knows how to garner interest.
