They were in 2-seater F18s. Actors were in the Wizzo back seat, acting along to the jet's movements, but making sure all 6 cameras were running correctly. Front seat was the actual pilot. The BTS videos are very deliberately not telling you this lol.
Carpool critics was a better name. Also for reference, the switchover episode was the Shang-Chi review, they went into why there and I don't think it's held up.
They had to use F-18s because the F-22 and F-35 are single seaters. The actors couldn't get permission to fly the planes but they still wanted to get the actors actually flying. This was the only practical way to make it happen.
Not to mention I’m pretty sure components of the F35 and F22 are still classified while the F18 is older and a lot of it’s been declassified already. So even if they were two seaters I doubt they would’ve been able too.
How has no one mentioned all the stuttering in the video starting around the 14th minute. I've tried multiple devices and networks and it still stutters at the exact same spots. Has anyone else had this problem?
Carpool Critics was really a much better name guys. I have been listening since the inception of this, I still don't understand for the life of me why the name was ever changed.
They changed the name of the podcast because having the word "movie" in the title is allegedly better for SEO, but since changing the name the views haven't increased beyond anything that can be attributed to a meriad of other factors. With that being said, Carpool Critics is a better name. It has a story and a more memorable ring to it - I still look for Caprool Critics because I struggle to remember They're Just Movies. I've been an avid listner since episode one, watching the movies before each eposide. CC is better, but I don't care what they call it, I'm along for the ride the whole way.
I found it great that they didn't specify who the enemy was, although it was obviously Iran (nuclear program, Russian tech, F-14s), precisely because I didn't want to think about how the enemy pilots also had family and friends. If I had seen their eyes and their faces, it would humanise them for the audience and made me think of, well, American imperialism and the military industrial complex. This way, they were just NPCs
18:57 - Acshually, F35's do not suck _Riley_ /s Yes, they have had development and budget issues, but they are the most advanced air weapons system the world has right now. The F35 would have totally been the best weapon system for this mission though. But it doesn't have 2 seats like the F18, and I think they chose a double-seat jet to harken back to the Tomcat and first movie's buddy dynamic. Apart from that, they couldn't have filmed the movie with a single seater, since it's not actually the actors flying the planes. Plus for aviation and military plane nuts out there, there's a lot more emotional and historical attachment to the F18 than the F35. We haven't seen much combat and use of the F35 as of yet, so it's not very relatable to service-men either.
And then I thought about my comment after the fact, and realized Maverick and Rooster don't even have WSO's in the last mission. So it's pretty much just filming restraints.
oh the plane choice one military regulation states that civilians can't actually be in control of military hardware outside of small arms. so in order to get the actors actually in the jets they had to use fighters that have 2 seats. so even when it looks like cruise is solo in the jet he's not he's not even allowed to touch the controls when in the air. the f-35 doesn't have a 2 seat trainer model like the f-18 does.
Seeing as how Riley kept mentioning why they weren't' using F-22s, The F-22 is only used by the USAF not USN and is not carrier capable. As for the F-35 while there is a Navy variant (I did see one in the intro to the movie) the F/A-18 still hasn't fully been phased out.
Maverick being a test pilot makes the whole 'talking to himself' part make a little more sense, since he was talking through everything in the test flight to keep a record.
the reason that they didnt use new jets is because they coudn't get 2 seaters which they need for filming and to have the pilots with the targeting systems
Late, but FA18s are pretty much on equal footing with 5th gen and have surpassed F22s. It’s main advantage is that it was designed to be very modular compared to most other aircraft. 22s never got any of the fancy features that were promised while the 18 has been regularly upgraded with the latest and greatest, it’s new E-War suite is on par with the 35, large modern display, modern radar, fancy helmet tied into all the systems, crap ton of computers, fiber network, and actually has a lot of lift from its surfaces so it can go relatively slow without falling out of the sky. It also doesn’t really need stealth as long as there’s a growler with it, not going into detail but it pretty much nullifies radar. Also, 22 is air force, no self respecting sailor would fly it.
Yes and no the F22 is the best Fighter ever build, it's Problem: Too good, the US will probably never go to war with any country that has a fighter that can Match the 22, meanwhile the f35 is useful for more than Air to Air
wait - Penny was in the first one, wasn't she? When Maverick is getting yelled at in the admiral's office (and everyone is sweating), he mentions ab bunch of flyby's and behavior unbecoming an officer - and mentions "one admiral's daughter". Goose whisper's "oh, Penny Pembridge" or whatever... right?
AFAIK, when they shot the inside jet takes, the actors were in a 2 seater plane, with an actual navy pilot doing the stunts, and the actors recording their reactions to the stunts.
Loved the flying shots, hated the story of the mission. It was so Star Wars, they might as well have shown the Death Star blow up after they hit the hole in the ground without the help of the computer.
@They're Just movies You guys should do a review on RRR it is an Indian movie it's getting massive success on the western side PlayStation head creators, Doctor strange(2016) scriptwriters have also seen and they were quite impressed.
The roof flying off was real and not intentional. They built that set for that shot, but the jet blew the roof off, so they couldn't reshoot it. The shot looked cool anyway, so they kept it.
A similar thing happened with Mile Teller almost falling out of his seat while they were inverted going over the mountain. Even though it would be pretty freakin' dangerous for a real pilot to have their seat straps that loose, it looked cool, so they kept it in the movie.
Some little info that you guys might fine useful. Been watching top gun since it was on VHS. Penny was in the first top gun but only a mention at the beginning, “[Stinger] ... and one admiral’s daughter. [Goose whispering to Maverick] Penny Benjamin” A helmet for the f35 are specially designed per pilot and cost between $350k-$500k. They can see through the plane with the helmet. So they wouldn't be able to use that jet, minus the fact that it only has one seat anyway. When filming the flight scenes, they were using the super hornet and they were in the back seat. The pilot was in the front seat piloting. The CG bits were the explosions since there are way too many dangers. Some planes do return to 1G in G-lock but most don’t from my pilot friends.
Carpool Critics is better, and how "They're Just Movies" was decided on when its bland/vague and basically just asking to be lost in search results is very strange to me. like you expect somehow the word movie is gonna bring up your channel first? naaaw dog.
Penny was in the first movie... she was talked about by Meg Ryan's character in the bar scene where Goose plays the song with Marverick. Penny was the Admirals daughter "Penny Benjamin"

I can almost completely agree with your takes regarding the scenes on the ground, but the flight sequences were genuinely the most thrilling pieces of action cinema I have ever seen, and therefore it gets *way* more points in my book.
+1 on Floatplane viewer saying "carpool critics" was a better name
Carpool critics is better, however. TJM probably performs better for SEO

In Topgun, Maverick was cited for a fly-by of an admiral's daughter, Penny Benjamin. Probably some heart breaking backstory on the cutting room floor.

This movie was very fun even if it still had a star wars trench run... went to see it in Dolby and the rumble seats were just that extra but awesome.
I saw it in IMAX. The expanded aspect ratio was immersive.
Next I'll watch it in ScreenX and then Dolby Cinema.
Not sure about 4DX. 🤔

The music totally shaped the scene right off the bat... also.... those water bottles might not be filled with water... rock on.
the reason that they didnt use new jets is because they coudn't get 2 seaters which they need for filming and to have the pilots with the targeting systems
We're at the very tailed end cusp of this not being a "historical" movie. Perfect timing and the last maybe, sadly, one of the last of its kind.
