I like what Disparu said, in that there's nothing inherently wrong with writing within an established IP, just as long as the writing is good. People say Star Wars is dead, but I say it's merely dormant. With the right writers writing rightly, great Star Wars content will eventually be seen again so long as Disney doesn't get in the way (and if it keeps going the way it's going, it won't be in the way much longer).
Stars is dead in the sense that the brand loyalty has eroded because of broken trust to the point that even if something gets good word of mouth and critical reception, a lot of people are not going to bother because 1. I think it is more that even if they reference the show it is done so badly that there is zero benefit to have watched the shows. Sometimes it might even be a detriment to have seen the shows because the movies will contradict them. This is Mauler's point. Doesn't change that the audience will feel the pressure to keep up and believe they are missing something in the movies. Might just be the writing in the movie that sucked but the viewer who knew about the show might believe that they didn't get something because they missed a show. And thus lose interest in the universe for the wrong reason. So even if Mauler might be right it doesn't really change anything because the potential audience might not know that and are only basing their decisions on feelings.
Mark Millar makes an excellent point about the love for any cinematic property only lasting for a maximum of two generations. This has long been the elephant in room during all of the discussions about the diminishing quality and cultural impact of each new attempt to capitalise on beloved IPs.
How long have modern cinematic universes even existed for people to draw that conclusion? We haven't had them for long and very few have even been able to get off the ground to become a cinematic universe to begin with. I see no reason why a large fantasy or science fiction universe can't live on for generations if it is handled correctly. The problem lies in the passing of the reins from one generation to the next. Not too hard for a second generation to fall in love with the same stuff the first generation loved. But by the time a third generation is coming around there will be a lot more material out and as seen lately most of the early magic is gone by then. So far most cinematic universes become successful by "chance". They weren't necessarily planned as being that large and by the time it has gotten big the original creators might feel it has grown out of their hands or for some other reason it gets sold off. New IP owners and perhaps no real respect to anything besides the potential money they can get out of it. But if the IP were more treated like an old family business and the new generation of IP holders were groomed from the start to be the guardians of the IP I don't see why it wouldn't be able to work for multiple generations. You could even make it so a person can't be in charge of it for longer than like 20 years or they have reached the age of 60 so a new "heir" that has more connection to the current times (preferably not too young and swept up in modern politics) and understands shifting trends. Like George Lucas might not be able to save SW today even if he got the chance because he might be too out of touched to be able to reach people born after the prequels were made. You need some change over the generations to keep up as well. The key is to change it enough to be relevant without changing the actual core of what makes something good. That is the hard part.
Marvel was doing good TV with Agents of SHIELD because the series was integrated into the continuity of the movies - I'm watching the series again at the moment (just reached Age of Ultron) and slotting the movies into the running at the appropriate points, and it really feels like a single continuum. From what I've heard, the people making the MCU were dismissive of the TV show, while the people making the TV show were obviously very into the movies. If the production had been more integrated the TV show would have been even better - although for me it was a great series that epitomised everything I had loved about Marvel comics back in the Sixties and Seventies, i.e. big stories told at a human level.
One of the best Open Bar's ever. Loved the Marvel conversation. Two points to add. There was also due to the activist hire's and general quality effect, where the quality dropped in all areas like; editing, marketing, story, CGI, animation, etc. Second, Marvel has let budgets get way too out of control. How many of those movies would have been successful if the budget had just been reasonable.
The biggest down fall for mediocre movies is the price of GOING to the cinema. The whole "fatigue" wouldn't exist if it didnt cost me half a days pay to goto see it. Noones gonna take the chance on a movie with prices like that. Noones gonna go to a flick every weekend with prices like that.
1:21:45 I’m a 40 yr old woman who used to adore comic book films, and grew up with Buffy, Star Trek etc, so superhero/sci-fi/fantasy are genres I love, but since the studios have tried to make the films appeal more to women, I’ve stopped watching. As male-centred as the fandom is, Marvel and co were actually more women-friendly when they targeted male fans. Avengers Assemble is one of my fave films, and Whedon’s fun humour, and decent character writing made the genre accessible and interesting for most people.
Even if I weren’t boycotting the Rodent House, I am boycotting Pedro Pascal. There’s nothing bringing me back into the fold. There’s no reason for me to ever return to Marvel.

Venom made nearly a billion dollars in theaters. I think that might be the reason they keep making them.
I would definitely watch a Chris Evans captain America if it came out
Regarding movies being an event. I agree with Will, the more movies you pump out the less of an event they are gonna be. I remember when I was a kid and the Star Wars, or Star Trek movies came out it was a huge thing back then, I'm talking now about the end of the 70's beginning of the 80's.
This was an amazing episode. I really like Mark Millar. He’s an amazing guest and talks really well. I hope he’s on again in the future. Him and Reaper are probably my two favourite guests for completely different reasons lol.
Dude I’d love to buy your movie on blue ray 100%
I don't call it the "Spider-verse" or the "Venom-verse". I call it the Sony Appendage-verse.
"The Boys" need to learn a lesson from Star Trek. A message is better received if not using a hammer.
35:40 No idea what Mauler is on about here, the films constantly reference the shows.
RDJ coming back to the MCU.Is just another nostalgia bait gimmick like Spiderman NWH and X-Men97 to lure fans back to a dying MCU.
Holy shit, Mark Millar!
Good morning everyone! Have tea!
No one mentions Ryan Reynolds got trashed when he was in Blade Trinity....hence Wesley's cameo 😅
We don’t talk about that…
RDJ was wearing the Tony Stark sunglasses during the reveal. Not sure what that means, since I don't read comics, but I'm sure it was intentional.
Ask your politicians to stop sponsoring war overseas and your prices gonna low real fast.
Love listening to you guys 🧡 Any chance you'll publish Open Bar episodes as a podcast?
So i guess Chris Evans is next to return
Not impossible but i think he's a little less money hungry than DJ.
Man of Steel wasn't subversive. Superman was sincere, patriotic, and self sacrificing.
Favorite film antagonist:
Scar.
Finally getting rid of that holier than thou and goodie two shoes Mufasa, and don't mention that irritating cub ...
“I’m sorry Wolveringing’s so hard! “
Avengers Assemble is one of my fave films, and Whedon’s fun humour, and decent character writing made the genre accessible and interesting for most people.
like the old saying '' nobody hates women more than other women ''
The only thing that could’ve made this stream better would’ve been an appearance by Dankula. What’s better than listening to two Scots? Three Scots! 😆
I wonder if the Deadpool in the Cavill universe has a Peter or a Martha.
Again when talking about villains, what do you think about Raymond Reddington, from the series The Blacklist?
Hes good but carries the show to much as most of the other characters are meh
A Wolvering to remember
Even if I weren’t boycotting the Rodent House, I am boycotting Pedro Pascal. There’s nothing bringing me back into the fold. There’s no reason for me to ever return to Marvel.
They announce the firing cause the shareholders will drop a brick. They have to get a successful movie without the message to show to share holders you can't force spending?
an example of coming back and it being good - Sam Rami with the Ash and the Evil Dead series
Awesome new intro!
Nothing says desperation like hooking back up with your ex. That’s RDJ
My first Open Bar - I know... late to the game - and loved this one.
Late and ghey… you’ll fit right in!!
Give me more civil disagreements. I liked the different viewpoints regarding the culture in Hollywood.
MauLer - my favourite villain: Angelus. I think Angel is so boring I can't believe Buffy ever fancied him. But Angelus is the boss. David Boreanaz comes alive as Angelus (if that isn't a contradiction in terms).
2006 was also the year one of my favorite childhood movies came out - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe! 🦁
Just looking at the thumbnail, Joe Russo has the face of "I've got a bad feeling about this."
lol, to be fair he has that expression 90% of the time in interviews
Speaking of games making you hyper-aware… After I’ve played Fallout games for an extended time, I’ll go out into the real world and look at random items lying around thinking “Hmm, I could use that for scrap…”
I was farming the giant pigs in BloodBorne for a bit to long, i even started dreaming about them... so one morning on my way to work (in game ur joystick starts vibrating when the pigs charge at u) i suddenly feel vibrations (probably from cars) and my mind just goes to ''fuk...they are right behind me and its to late to dodge'' and than i wake up that im in the real world and there are no giant pigs, my heart was pumping so hard from that and i could feel my spine getting ready for the impact... it was fun.
Superman - red cape and red "underwear", blue leggings and shirt.. He literally is RED AND BLUE.
Greatest villains leads me to suggest The operative from Serenity, Bester from Babylon 5 and the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Strong disagreee with Mark that every Batman movie without Joker lost money. Rises made over a billion.
True.Cuz Batman has always made bank.
The wicked witch is one of my favourite villan. She was green and had flying monkeys. Enough said.
When it comes to the boys, if I watched the first season alone I would have just quit when Homelander was first away from the other heroes.
I finished the first season, but even then it was part someone else watching and me trying to figure out why it was so loved.
An anime called Needless taught me that not all things are worth finishing and I am glad it did.
Also, I liked Mark in Brave as Young MacGuffin.
The cameo of Channing Tatum as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine is the Nicholas Cage Superman cameo in the Flash, but done right. ✔️ 👍
Cheers for the spoiler, was going to see it at the weekend. 🙄
@@chewie8stay away from the comments dude.
@@chewie8I've got no sympathy for you. If you want to avoid spoilers don't read the comment section under the videos dedicated to movies you're trying not to spoil for yourself - it's that easy.
Oh and Taylor Swift as Lady Deadpool is going to blow your mind

Deadpool vs Wolverine. 2 👍👍 up. Mauler was apparently watching a different movie
People hit their creative peak in their 20s-30s look at all the good 90s films from directors born in the 60s hitting their stride in their 20s-30s.
Disney movies just feel like paying to watch propaganda now.
MODERN Disney
Wish we could go back to Older/classic Disney.
That's been Disney's job since the second World war. Army Intelligence stormed into Walt's studio and told him to start drawing Donald Duck selling war bonds.
You hit the nail on the head🎯
When I think “Wolvering”, I think of brass knuckles with wolverine claws.
I love Farscape. It needs to be brought back, with the right people. It is the universe we need right now.
I don’t have an issue with an actor playing an old or new character that they have played before. In Deadpool and Wolverine we had Chris Evans become the Human Torch again despite being Captain America for better part of over a Decade. The issue I have with RDJ as Dr Doom is whether they can pull a great story out of it. I have to say it doesn’t mater the actor. They lack the writing staff and the director and producer to pull off any kind of movie of interest or quality.
Never too late to mention Scorpius from "Farscape". Wayne Pygram should get more work that we can see in the states.
Rich i didnt want to stop you but i know your a fan of farscape but its Farpoint.
1:09:30 you just talked about it. Doctor Who, even though it's not a person, came back after what, two decades, and made a huge impact and was arguably better than classic DW during its peak 🎉
