Most things they mentioned here are trivial. THE BIG THINGS are Property Taxes, State Taxes and WINTERS. WINTERS are brutal. I think the winters are manageable is you own a good coat but I'm with you on the vampiric property taxes. They should not tax homeowners who are retired or who make less than 100 G a year. They should tax income above. 200-400 G with exceptions for number of dependents, small business etc.
Winters are way milder than they used to be. Also the winters are nothing like in the North East. The biggest issue is the very long stretch of dark days.
@@kli9005 What????????? Winters way worse than North East. And some winters are worse than other winters, BUT they are all bad. You sound like someone that does not shovel snow, drive in ice and snow, or spent any time outside.
What almost everyone DOESN'T know: The term "cheese head" was coined by a FIB (------- Illinois -------) columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. He was driving in Wisconsin and he got stopped for speeding. In his column, shortly thereafter, he desparagingly referred to the policeman as a "cheese head". Someone on the south side of Milwaukee read the column and thought: "Hey...I've got an idea". He fashioned a cheese shaped hat out of some foam rubber...sprayed it yellow...and wore it to a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game. Everyone wanted to know where he got it. The rest is history!

How so? Are you referring to politics, cost of living? I'm curious because I'm considering a move to WI from a neighboring state. Not sure which city would be a good fit.
@@The3Dsmasha little bit of everything. Madison (and Milwaukee) are a different culture than the rest of the state. Maybe it's more liberal because of college students or just being a city, but the way of life and culture is different. Of course property will be more expensive than in other parts of the state and has more crime since it's a bigger area. There are some really great towns in the Madison area that are safer and less expensive. You also won't see as much of the natural beauty of you stay inside the city or don't travel very far across the state.
Nice shoutout to Belts! I live like 4 blocks away and can certainly vouch for it. After living in Madison and Stevens point for roughly 5 years each, I feel as if Stevens point is like a small Madison (but with free parking). Thoughts?
Every time someone gasps and says they could never live here I just nod. Not trying to convince everyone to live here then ruin it. WI is not for the weak. It was amazing when I was a kid. As far as food I grow it, all year round, and it tastes better than when we go out anyways. I love that the winter helps control pests and disease for the garden. WI is a great state
Amen ! I'm more tempted to sell people on it, but yeah. Personally I can barely handle winter, but I also come from dairy farm background, and Dunn co. gets plenty cold although it's not the worst part of WI, and in short, we were understaffed, over worked, had sub-par infrastructure and systems to some extent, and times were really hard in my teens, during which we had that super awful horrible stretch of cold the February of 2016 I think it was. Things were a little better for my work conditions that really LOOOONG cold stretch back in, what, 2014 or 15 ? When it didn't get above zero for a record 6 weeks or somethin, and most of it was spent at 25 below ( actual or wind-chill, I can't recall but I think actual). It took years, after those VERY hard experiences in my teens, for me to be less fearful of winter. I wish I could handle poisonous creepy crawlies around, I'd move south, well, Pacific Northwest if it wasn't... ya know... . So for me the cold nearly is a deal breaker but yeah, most people here seem fine w it.
I used to take a small cooler out here when I lived in Colorado and bring it back full of cheese from the dairy and cheese place near my parents house. The cool part about where my parents live is there is a butcher a few miles away so I only eat steak when I go to their house. Store bought stuff is crap.
Moved to Madison 4 years ago from Los Angeles and I feel like there are much better highlights. -loads of biking trails -gorgeous driftless countryside -Lakes -Great schools -peaceful -Friendly -Four beautiful seasons -Summer storms -Kwik Trips
Kwik Trips!! Can’t believe we forgot those! We touch on most of those other highlights in many of our other videos Mark. We’ll have to add Kwik Trips though…they are pretty sweet.
I am a transplant but have lived here for many years. What I noticed are the abundance of parks and sidewalks. If you like to walk a lot, then you can.
And even outside of the area known as the driftless there's some beautiful rolling countryside. As good or better in some way, to me :). Check out southern or western Dunn county sometime, and counties to the west, although other counties have their pretty areas and back roads too. And I LOVE walking the beaches of lake Superior, and hiking to waterfalls up north too.
Thanks for all the information. My husband and I are planning on moving to Wisconsin with our two kids next year. Here in Phoenix our seasons consist of almost summer, summer, summer, fall. I think we going to need to get a whole new wardrobe 😅.
Don't move to Madison or Milwaukee. They are the 2 biggest far left cities we have here they tax the hell out of you for owning a car. And the land tax in Dane and Milwaukee County are holey hell high
If you are planning on moving to the Madison area with school aged children, check out the nearby smaller cities such as Waunakee or Oregon. They have much better school systems than Madison, as well as lower crime. Madison is a great city, but growth brings issues our local politicians have no grasp on how to deal with.
We have only one season here in San Francisco, and I’m completely exhausted from it - homeless people, poop and needles all over the streets season. Last night I was yet again awoken by someone having a crisis outside of my downtown front facing apartment, this time involving someone chaining their pit bull up to a fence right outside of our building in the rain. And the police told me that they weren’t going to do anything about it because that was animal care and control’s jurisdiction, and they weren’t open until the morning. It was at that moment that I thought “That’s it, I’m done with this place.” Yet again. At this point I just want out. Cheaper housing and less insanity is all i care about. Police that actually do their job. Sign me up.
If you need help of an kind, like where to find something or how to dress in certain weather, just ask a neighbor or anyone. we are there to helps . We are very friendly people.
It’s basically the same over here I’m from Hudson, WI 15 minutes out from the Twin Cities, MN everything you guys explained is exactly how it is here it’s funny how almost anywhere you go even in the cities of Wisconsin that there still the same in every category we got so many deer hunters here too and right above us is a county that’s full of lakes and a lot of people from the twin city area cross the bridge through Hudson or Houlton to go to there cabins for the summer time
I have family in Green Bay and my best friend lives there too. I've been there in summer, winter, fall and spring. The summers are only bothersome if you don't live far enough north or you don't live near the lake. People drink more beer than water and they put beer in just about everything. If you don't know what cheese curds are, you're missing out.
Be cautious - here in NE WI, (Door Co. specifically) our housing prices -rents - prices in general have really escalated. A friend who moved to a more rural northwoods location managed to find a decent price on a home, but… she’s pretty rural…….
Most Belgian immigrants in 19th and 20th century went to Wisconsin. Actually the region from Chicago (IL) to Green Bay. If you have ever been to Belgium you would never again wonder where the bar density comes from. In Belgium it’s way more than in Germany or France. We work hard but we love beer and food. By the way, Krystel is a typical Belgian name 😊😉
Born and raised there, spent the first half of my life in Wisconsin and moved from Oconomowoc in 1990 to Arkansas. Sounds like it hasn't changed much...lol. Suprisingly there are a lot of similarities between the states. Cheese is a priority food here although not as good, mosquitos are just as crazy. Humidity is about the same only hotter temps. Deer hunting is a lifestyle here as well....lol. Blessings.
It’s the dew point that makes it muggy as hell 50° dew point nice and cool 60° starting to get muggy If the dew point hits 70° stay in your air conditioned house Very very tropical
Went to oshkosh for the first time this year. Im from texas and it was just beautiful. Im thinking of moving. Texas is just getting too expensive and its so damn hot in the summer im tired of it. Biggest sell for me was how polite everyone was it reminds me of Texas i love that and having gun ownership freedom were the two biggest selling points for me. I hope it all works out and i can start a life there 🤞🏻
I’m an Illinoisian who loves Wisconsin. I never understood the friction between our respective states. Illinoisans spend a LOT of money in Wisconsin and we benefit from the hospitality and beauty of Wisconsin. It should be seen as a mutually beneficial relationship. And let’s face it we both hate the semis and the construction. Cheers!
Hi Laura! Thanks for the comment! I think what we mentioned about the difference in driving styles is a lion share of the reason. Since we don't deal with nearly the traffic most Illinois and especially Chicago people do we just have a more laid back approach. The aggressiveness of many IL drivers (Not all) I think can be off putting to us laid back country folk 🙂. Thanks for watching!
Anyone considering moving to Wisconsin should listen to "Up in Wisconsin" by Lou and Peter Berryman. It goes something like: [to the tune of "La Cucaracha"] Up in Wisconsin, up in Wisconsin The weather isn't very nice. Up in Wisconsin, up in Wisconsin They gotta fish right through the ice! ... and so on. Tells you everything you need to know!
Cool video! I'm still trying to decide 1 of my summer destinations, and Wisconsin is on my list. 1st is getting there. Is it wise to fly into Midway (Chicago), then drive up?. That is the cheapest way by air from where I am. I see it's not a long drive to Wisconsin, but u mentioned traffic. Also if you know of any brewery there in Madison that brews a good brown ale I would appreciate it! Thanks,!
Yes, flying into Chicago and then driving up isn’t bad. Many times we drive to Chicago and fly out from there. Not a big brown ale guy but there are a lot of microbreweries that I’m sure you’ll find a winner at!
No. Midway is on the south side of Chicago - very rough side of town. O’Hare is closer, about an hour and a half drive to Milwaukee. You can do that, but I personally vowed to never do that again. Spend the money and fly direct to Milwaukee (or wherever is closer), it’s not worth the headache.
600,000 deer hunters and still we have too many deer in Wisconsin. How many are actually hunting? While the others just drink for a week lol. Used to live in Wisconsin for 25 years. Live in Oregon now.. No humidity = no mosquitos not a thing in the Valley, out in the cascade mountains the mosquitos can be a problem. I miss the cheese, beer and food of the midwest. Don't miss the winters or humid summers.
@@livinginmadisonwi Could be lol.. As a kid I'd take one shot and it should be all you need, never had to take more than one shot. I hear people shooting round after round. bang bang bang.. I'm like what the heck are you doing?? lol
@@livinginmadisonwiMaybe, as a lot of people shoot less often nowadays than back when, when they were shootin squirrels, predators going for the henhouse, and so on, throughout the year, year after year growing up. Also, my husband's Dad would only give him like 1 or was it 3... bullets at a time and told him he couldn't get more unless he got something. Made a good shot out of him... I'm probably butchering the story, no pun intended ! Anyway, according to my hubby, It's that there's overall less large hunting parties, with some of them tasked with driving the deer. Combing the woods and scaring them up and out of their hidey holes and towards those waiting for em. My husband's parents were older, both gone now, along with his brother closest to him. He's been usually alone out there, except the times I put on orange and tried to "drive" deer for him. The last time, I started before he was ready, and that was the only deer we saw that day. He did get a large one, thank God, the next day. He usually has finally gotten one or 2 at the last minute. For most of the week of gun hunt season ( what he does), he hardly sees any, and if he does, they're on a neighbor's land he doesn't even know who owns or how to get ahold of them, OR knows that the owner doesn't usually allow hunters to go on their land, sometimes even if they shot one who was still movin, and went into their land. So, as u see, it's not so simple. And yes, they really hide when gun season starts. After that 1st hour of gun shots and blaze orange, they HIDE. Unless you have a large hunting party &/or don't have land to hunt on with neighbors w woods or swamps who don't allow hunting, you're chances of not seeing any to shoot at are high. And it's illegal to shoot from inside your vehicle or a dwelling...or the minute after season closed for the day. And of course, that is when u see the deer. My bff however, dairy farms w her husband and they get lots of deer, and so we usually get our venison for the year one way or another. They have more woods around them, along with all those hay fields etc. , and a lot of family who have time and ability to bow hunt AND gun hunt. They get a lot of deer, and don't need it all, as they have their own beef too.
If you are driving at night looking for cars - good idea, looking for deers - a must. Along with other cars and deer, WI is a leader when it comes to drunk drivers and you are just as likely to be hit by a drunk driver as you are likely to hit a deer. Property taxes, they will drive you of your home.
In Madison wisconson and other big city’s like Milwaukee and Oshkosh you don’t actually see the full joy of Wisconsin. For that you have to go up north to places like big falls and even green bay
A couple of things you didn't mention. Wisconsin is probably the only state where you can order a brandy old-fashion and you will get a perfect one every time. Also, if you are dining out on Friday, don't forget to make a reservation. We have the world's biggest fish frys here. We are the only state with the trademark "Supper Club". Enjoy!

As long as I can find a Walmart in the area, I'm good 👍. I'm very used to Midwest seasons being from Illinois (southwest of Chicago).winter and construction
There's something about the geography combined with the weather that just destroys roads here in Wisconsin. I bet if they were left alone for a few decades, there'd be no trace of them left.
That's just wind chill. I wish they stop that because they make it sound worse than what it really in. They just say the wc so people cover their skin.
Houston has two seasons: Unbareably hot and humid for 9 months (like 80-110 degrees with 80-100% humidity) and then cloudy 60 degree wheather during winter… I an leaving
Construction is year round here as long as the weather permits. They've been working on building & roads a couple blocks from the house all winter. Oh the humidity...yep had an argument with someone who claimed Wisconsin isn't humid most of the year. They claimed they lived here for 8 years (were from Texas supposedly). Tell that to my sinuses and migraines I get from the humidity & it can be year round. It was also humid where I lived in South Texas 5 1/2 years (but for some reason it didn't bother me). Wisconsin also had/have a large French population & some of the names are French.
On the french names, yes, but some you think are French turn out to be Native American. We had a french workaway-er ( it's a help out in exchange for room and board connection site, we've hosted a few travellers) who was surprised about the French history of WI - apparently they don't teach that in France - but was confused by Prairie du Sac. Why they'd name it that. Turns out it's Native American name, not based on french at all, like I'd assumed it was.
Interesting personal fact; if you have lived in both Madison and Austin Texas a couple of times you will find that you run into the same people a few times in both places. Secondly, the mosquitos are helping you in that you have too much blood to survive a winter here with so much. Thirdly, it is one of the best educated places in the whole of the United States. Please have a good day.
Hey guys I have watched all your videos, and it has been very useful. Keep up the amazing work! I may be coming to Madison soon to get my Ph.D. at UW. Where would you recommend looking for affordable 1 bedroom apartments? Any specific areas? I would love your input! Thanks, and salutations from Lubbock, Texas.

Cool :). I was given the set of books for my birthday once as a kid. I grew up very near there, she was in Pepin county (I'm pretty sure, if I recall .. ) as a small child, I was just north in Dunn. Dunn also has the Caddie Woodlawn park with preserved house ! Loved those books as well !
The property taxes are insane. There are no real exceptions for seniors or people on fixed incomes. I drives many people out of the homes they own and discourages young people who would like to be homeowners. None of that money seems to filter to public school teachers or replacing dangerous lead pipes. Most of it goes to frivolous building projects like public school auditoriums or shiny sports facilities--- nothing that actually has to do with learning or giving young people a chance for a better life. People in local governments are usually rich people who want to filter public money to their private businesses through these unnecessary "improvements". People in Wisconsin worship sports in a cultish way. They will give these multi-million dollar sports franchises public money. It is truly sad.
Absolutely true. I will add that they also tax seniors on their SS, IRA, 401K, Pensions, Dividends and Interest. I have family there. All drink too much and are obese. I never go there.
This is 2 years ago now in the last 2 years the winter is getting drastically warmer the last 2 years and this is a definite long term trend over the past 30 years just a fyi

Wasn't very humid in WI this year! I loved this summer! I live in mid WI where it has been dry this summer so maybe that's the reason it wasn't very humid this year.

If all of this is so bad why are you still living there? Why haven't you moved from Madison or are you just being negative? How many big cities have you lived in??
We do a lot of videos about the good things about Madison, we thought it would be valuable for some people to know some of the drawbacks as well so they know.
Don't get me wrong it's less humid than Arkansas, just not as dry as out west like CO. Currently it's 83 with 63% humidity. Could be worse but still some humidity in the air. Heat index can hit 100 with humidity, but that is usually only a handful of days/weeks each summer and then a storm comes through and we get back to 80's with moderate humidity. What % humidity do you have consistently in AK?
You didn't mention Wis. LOVES football. Not just Wis. Badgers but GB Packers and high school fb on Friday nights. People that HATE fb say we are a drinking state with a football problem. Sat. Badgers and Sunday Packers fans crowd the bars.
Anyone not into football though, don't worry too much. Just be able to be supportive of your neighbor's love of it with a smile and kind word, and go your way. Plenty of us aren't into it at all or much, and you'll find people into nearly everything decent there is, to connect with. Whether it's knitting, beekeeping, cars, fishing, church, health food, mushrooms, hiking, water sports, glass blowing, woodcrafts, welding, hunting, charcuterie, brewing, horses, blacksmithing, you name it, people here do it ! My husband isn't into sports at all and I was into baseball but didn't have time to keep up w it.
Indirectly you do yes, the landlord takes the property taxes into account when they set the rental rate. So you pay the rent every month and a portion of that the landlord pays the property taxes with at the end of the year.
It would definitely be different, you'd have to embrace it and not fight it. Find fun things to do in the winter indoors or get the warm apparel and find a fun outdoor activity like downhill or cross country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, sledding, to name a few. Not for everyone though!
Road rage don’t forget about the road rage here lol I’ve lived here for about 6 years now and Wisconsin people are overly aggressive but drive slow in the left lane 🤣🤣🤣 it’s weird
Where are you ?! We lived in IL for 3 years, a few yrs ago, and THERE drivers were SUPER aggressive, not necessarily rage-full, but constantly driving very fast and passing you even when you yourself are going the customary few above the speed limit, and even out on backroads in the DeKalb area. Man alive ! So stressful. I'm from Dunn co. WI and it used to be, you had to go to a big city to experience the constantly fast and furious type traffic, but for the past couple decades it's spread everywhere ( in the Midwest anyway) it seems. The more rural counties in WI still seem among the best though. Not that aggressive and definitely not road rage.

I'm from Wisconsin and if you act like a human being I will always treat you with dignity and respect.
@@timothylarsen2885 I was raised old school and was taught to treat people with respect that I was treated with. I always respect the laws and rules of anywhere I am
Born and raised in Wisco and I was taught to make fun of and hate Illinois
I still do and have taught my kids the same
@slice40 YOU were taught right, stay out of Illinois when possible especially the northeast part of Illinois
We really dont need more people from illinoise displacing kids born proper and right In the state of wisconsin my once loved rural town has become a craphole you people are making it impossible for generations of wisconsinites to afford housing then they get displaced and have to move away from their families stop being a coward and fight for your own state I would never leave wisconsin when the dollar collapses rich people from chicago are screwed we know who you people are
Madison is not representative of Wisconsin. It's a completely different reality.
@@swarley39 Thanks for the comment; I may visit next Spring.
It’s the communist part of the state
Madison has an economy that is practically recession proof. A lot of this has to do with the State government and the UW.
You do know what the 4 seasons are in WI?
Winter, Pothole, Construction & Football..
I live in northern ill. and am in Wisconsin quite a bit, never had a negitive vibe ever. More bars than grocerie stores is great.
It depends on where you are for the humidity.
Moved to Madison 4 years ago from Los Angeles and I feel like there are much better highlights.
-loads of biking trails
-gorgeous driftless countryside
-Lakes
-Great schools
-peaceful
-Friendly
-Four beautiful seasons
-Summer storms
-Kwik Trips
Kwik Trips!! Can’t believe we forgot those! We touch on most of those other highlights in many of our other videos Mark. We’ll have to add Kwik Trips though…they are pretty sweet.
@thegrumpyhorticulturist Actually Madison is liberal.
Lol LA is a shit hole (no offense) so that's not saying much.
Thanks for all the information. My husband and I are planning on moving to Wisconsin with our two kids next year. Here in Phoenix our seasons consist of almost summer, summer, summer, fall. I think we going to need to get a whole new wardrobe 😅.
You should do it. I am also over living somewhere where it’s hot 9-10 months of the year ahh
It’s basically the same over here I’m from Hudson, WI 15 minutes out from the Twin Cities, MN everything you guys explained is exactly how it is here it’s funny how almost anywhere you go even in the cities of Wisconsin that there still the same in every category we got so many deer hunters here too and right above us is a county that’s full of lakes and a lot of people from the twin city area cross the bridge through Hudson or Houlton to go to there cabins for the summer time
That's awesome. Does sound very similar and familiar...thanks for chiming in!
My wife, two kids and I may be moving from Montana. We love it here but have been priced out of buying a home here which is really sad
so move to another state and price them out outlander
Be cautious - here in NE WI, (Door Co. specifically) our housing prices -rents - prices in general have really escalated. A friend who moved to a more rural northwoods location managed to find a decent price on a home, but… she’s pretty rural…….
Yeah i live in houston so 86 degrees witha 100% humidity is a coldfront in summertime
😲 Can’t imagine…
Most Belgian immigrants in 19th and 20th century went to Wisconsin. Actually the region from Chicago (IL) to Green Bay. If you have ever been to Belgium you would never again wonder where the bar density comes from. In Belgium it’s way more than in Germany or France. We work hard but we love beer and food. By the way, Krystel is a typical Belgian name 😊😉
🇧🇪=🇫🇷 😊
My family is from Belgium. You can tell by my last name.
That's why nearly everyone is obese.
Blessings.
Well sounds like you picked a good state to move to…winters are probably much better and hopefully make up for the hot summers!
Having family in Wisconsin, it’s really the lack of decent grocery stores….good luck finding a Whole Foods or something that has healthy food.
Well that's a bunch of bullshit. Sounds like you never visited WI.
It’s the dew point that makes it muggy as hell
50° dew point nice and cool
60° starting to get muggy
If the dew point hits 70° stay in your air conditioned house
Very very tropical
Because you have Chicago and crime
The fibs are horrible drivers and leave trash all over while tryin to catch our fish
Keep your money .
Anyone considering moving to Wisconsin should listen to "Up in Wisconsin" by Lou and Peter Berryman. It goes something like:
[to the tune of "La Cucaracha"]
Up in Wisconsin, up in Wisconsin
The weather isn't very nice.
Up in Wisconsin, up in Wisconsin
They gotta fish right through the ice!
... and so on. Tells you everything you need to know!
Go to Oklahoma, that humid. There are days when you can feel more humidity, but it doesn’t feel close to humidity in Oklahoma.
Or are the hunters just terrible shots!!??
Great timing! See y’all in Oct!
Hope it was helpful! See ya in October!
Coming from the Northeast the humidity up there was a welcome change. It's not high at all!
In Madison wisconson and other big city’s like Milwaukee and Oshkosh you don’t actually see the full joy of Wisconsin. For that you have to go up north to places like big falls and even green bay

There's something about the geography combined with the weather that just destroys roads here in Wisconsin. I bet if they were left alone for a few decades, there'd be no trace of them left.
Probably right...my theory is its a combination of the freeze and thaw cycles along with the salt in the winter!
Buckle up! It was -55 Fahrenheit here 3 years ago. Brrrr.
I remember that! Get those furnaces checked now!
That's just wind chill. I wish they stop that because they make it sound worse than what it really in. They just say the wc so people cover their skin.

I live in Madison Wisconsin I grocery shop at Woodman's I got a lot of stuff in there lots and lots of food
Hmm...was just going to hit the launch on Wisconsin. But now, dunno.

Nice job you two!!

Do you pay property taxes if you are renting? Sorry thinking of moving from overseas.
Indirectly you do yes, the landlord takes the property taxes into account when they set the rental rate. So you pay the rent every month and a portion of that the landlord pays the property taxes with at the end of the year.
if you are renting. you have a contract to pay a monthly price. you dont pay property tax as that is for the owner.
