First video I've seen where the wheel/tire, brake caliper and such were left alone. Makes sense to me to leave as much untouched as possible to prevent more damage. Sway bar links are easy enough to replace and make the project easier. You made it look so much easier than the other ones. Thanks for sharing this information with us.
Looks like that is possible because of that flat plate which can slide clear instead of the shaft having to back out of a diff/tranny unit like most steel critters.
Thank you for showing the boring stuff, it all helps! Now go get Mrs. O a proper kitchenette and lighting, she deserves it for all that great looking food she's making you lol.
That's true. Time for a office reno. I'm sure we could find several carpenter subs to reno the office in a weekend. Would make quite the video miniseries !!!!
My Sierra started clicking and believe its the CV axle , was going to take it down but hate spending all that money. After watching you do the job it looks straight forward and I will do it myself. Thanks for the video.
No need to even take off swaybar link. I have done it a few time on my 2500, For some reason my truck likes to eat drive axles on the drivers side only.
@@1969darr you have to do what you have to do. It depends. I've got a 2005 2500 I've changed em on both sides I bet 6 times. They come out and back in easily with the shock out of the way. I've got a 1994 k1500 and you cannot get it out without taking that link out of the way.
South Main Lunch Channel! Dang, this went smooth! Everything came apart super-easy, they sent you the right parts, and there was even a food-like item!
It's catty wampus actually, The definition of cattywampus, often spelled catawampus, is not lined up or not arranged correctly, or diagonally.so nothing to do with Cadillac.
Once again you do the best job of showing how to replace something. It is nice to see and hear all the real world experiences you have. Your my favorite auto repair guy!!! Keep up the great videos.
I love your videos. I keep learning stuff all the time from them. I have the confidence to work on my own vehicles from watching. One thing I am glad for is that I no longer live back east and the vehicles here in AZ don't suffer from rust.
Solid video! I'll add my experience to what you've presented. 1) Take off the engine/oil pan skid plate by removing the four 15mm bolts. This offers more clearance to maneuver the CV axle in and out. 2) As an alternative to pulling the sway bar end-link, you can remove the shock. The combination of those things should yield plenty of space to remove the CV shaft. Happy wrenching everyone!
I have to do this so thankfully you show something thats like an everyday driver in the rustbelt cuz other channels show a truck with no rust. I have hand tools so this should be fun!
Good video. I saw you struggle with the sway bar links so on my truck I just cut them off in the middle with a grinder, and they fell out, since I was putting new ones in anyways.
Not to be creepy Mr. O, but every time we get to see Mrs. O on camera it always is apparent to me how much she is into you... meaning how much she adores and has deep feelings for you. I hope that it is something you never take for granted as I wish my wife looked at me that way.
Nothing better than a laundry sink in the shop for washing up in. I have one in my shop too. Get in there and lather up all the way up your forearms and rinse off without getting the stuff everywhere.
Thanx! I just bought a 97 k1500 Chevy and need new boots. So now I’m going to just change out both sides with cv joints and sway bar end links. And new shocks cause that makes it easier to remove as well.
I used to get those trucks brought in often with broken bolts from the customer trying to do it themselves and driving it in cockeyeyed. Not so many anymore but man people do love snapping those bolts. Great vid great tip on making sure it’s even!
Man, it's nice having a lift. The last time I did front end work I was on my back in the driveway with a couple of China Freight jackstands holding up my truck. I think I've replaced the sway bar links at least twice each side so far. That's what you get when you live on a road that's more pothole than road I guess.
Looks whose editing skills are getting better and better all the time.... Not many folks understand what goes into a silly hand washing scene.....good stuff...
I've used them style links on my 2011 Chevy and I had to warranty them 2 twice one side would only last a few months and snap off and then I would warranty it and then the other side would go, so I changed to the standard moog links with the rubber bushings and never had a problem again.
Yep, Eric. Your sink is an exact copy of mine, out in the shop. Home Depot/Lowes, discount, fiberglass, cheapest thing they had on the shelf, but it's not supposed to look like the one in the Master Suite at home. Nice choice!
That was an easy job. I had no end of trouble swapping the right hand driveshaft on my Citroen C4 Grand Picasso (French minivan). I documented it on my channel and it ended up being a 4 part saga. I had to dismantle more of my front suspension and brakes to be able to get the outer CV end free so I could remove the entire driveshaft. I'll need to replace the left hand one as well which should be a bit easier. We have the same corrosion issues over here in the UK when the local councils put salt on the roads in the winter months when the temperatures drop to freezing point.
Damn I’m blown away when I see what the rust belt states go through on vehicles, I’m originally from California, nothing like that rust out their, just your typical Fires and earthquakes, lol
Not sure if anyone else has done so. But, I usually go for the shock bolt. Remove it, lift the shock. Pop the axle out, new axle in place. Put the shock back down and bolt it all up.
Thumbs up video! Watch now mostly for tool and technique discussion. At 11:15, your customer will need an upper ball joint on the knuckle and probably outer tie rods very soon. The rubber looks broken on both.
Fish and stir fry looked great and made me hungry. Couldn't believe what the underside of that 2500hd looked like, thought mine was rusty underneath from ohio salt, that truck looks like it's been through salt hell underneath. Your choice of replacement cuss words are always good for a laugh!
Thank you for the video! I love your channel, helps me everything I have to dig into my truck! I have to do both cv axels, sway bar links and bushings, brakes and an oil change. Thanks again for the helpful videos!
Cool intro What a wonderful wife you have Dr. O. Watching video before I go to work. Now I know that I'm having Long John Silvers for lunch. Fish sounds good.
Love these videos, I have an 07 2500HD (gas) with 150000 miles so I know there is a good chance I will be doing this before long. I bought the truck 7 years ago from a guy that used it on the "pipeline" so I know it's had a tough life before I got it.
Thank you for that! Makes me want to change the ones in my 06 Nissan Frontier 4X4...........NOT! GREAT VIDEO! No go get Mrs. O some great lighting and bright paint for the Office/Kitchen......PLEASE ! ! !
I've had several of them go bad. The last one on my 08 Chevy I just replaced the whole truck, but it was time to let it go. It only had 66,000 miles on it, but wanted a 2500 hd this time
What brand CV axles did you install? Curious with your experience on these GM trucks what brand CV axles you’d recommend. Cardone? Moog? Other? New or reman? Thanks! 👍
I really like the fact that you add protection to the cleaned plate, it all helps to make it a simpler job next time :-D. You cant stop the salt damage, but it can be slowed down a little.
I changed the CV boot on a chevy. GM boots, The inner was 17 bucks, The outer was 47! Figured its better to reuse what I had instead of buying some autozone crap with some cheap boots. Or like you said Wobble. Driven many of junkers with reman axles with a nice shake. Only bad part is that you need to come up with a new Ear clamp on the larger end because GM uses that stupid swage ring. The OEM boots are solid, last 10 + years. Damn that thing has rust.
Hi , i have been watching you for a while , and man i tell you , you are a very good man , and mechanic service man If i would be a Cie , i would hire you anytime !!! You are very good Keep it up my friend , be safe , don't get hurt , because we'll miss you Sorry for my language Serge ( from Mtl )
I'm amazed that axle just slid out of the hub like that. Here in one of the mildest climates you'll ever find I almost always have to break out the air hammer to get em moving.
Nice videos, love the Chevy pickups especially when you do Duramax ones. I wish more mechanics were that thorough and honest. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Great video thanks my friend. I like the way you work in all the light. I think your food would look better if Mrs O had some good lights. Great job and video thanks again. I didn't think you would do just one side of the link.
I think you do very good and work and you are very detailed oriented for example, the way you cleaned up the flange and added some spray for ease of installation and maybe rust minimization. I wonder if other shops are that detail oriented and actually do a good job especially after charging what they charge some of them. Anyway, great work always.

Thanks man I actually learned something on this video! I liked the detailed steps you were doing. A lot of RUclipsrs they fail to mention details.
Thank you for showing the boring stuff, it all helps! Now go get Mrs. O a proper kitchenette and lighting, she deserves it for all that great looking food she's making you lol.

And she needs a new salad spinner.
2nd that!!
I think the nearest Home Depot is in Rochester.
Joshua Carnine LOL! Are you mad because your mommy didn't cut the crusts of your PB&J?
My Sierra started clicking and believe its the CV axle , was going to take it down but hate spending all that money. After watching you do the job it looks straight forward and I will do it myself. Thanks for the video.
Swapping an axle without even taking off the wheel? SMA Sorcery! lol Thanks Dr. O!
The sorcery of owning a lift...
No need to even take off swaybar link. I have done it a few time on my 2500, For some reason my truck likes to eat drive axles on the drivers side only.
@@MatHelm, was going to say the same thing. Impossible not to take off the wheel if you're doing it on stands.

Thank you, buddy
For your help and don't forget to thank you wife for all the fine cooking for you...
South Main Lunch Channel!
Dang, this went smooth! Everything came apart super-easy, they sent you the right parts, and there was even a food-like item!
About a year and a half ago i had to do this on my father in laws 96 gmc and this is the video i watched before i did it. Thanks for all the tips
Don’t let it get caddywampus and smash it down with your torque wrench. SMA words of wisdom right there.
It's catty wampus actually, The definition of cattywampus, often spelled catawampus, is not lined up or not arranged correctly, or diagonally.so nothing to do with Cadillac.

It's funny, you say that we make it difficult sometimes. Still, you make it look easy most of the time!
Pure gravy. My compliments to Mrs. O she always looks nice.
Awesome, your channel would make a great mini series on TV !!!! like the new intro. You're becoming quite the film maker.
Good job, I like when quality work is done paying attention to detail and cleaning up the assy before reassemble!
Eric there is something to learn from your video or the comment Watching you Channel learn a lot and good tip Tuesday too thank you for your time
I love his videos!!!! please dont ever stop making them.
Best service writer ever!
The days before Mrs. O. had her own fully equipped shop!
How to replace a front CV axle, step one, see what the Mrs. is making for lunch, CHECK!
🤣🤣🤣 for sure!
Mrs. O knows how to cook healthy, a lost art these days.
Thanx! I just bought a 97 k1500 Chevy and need new boots. So now I’m going to just change out both sides with cv joints and sway bar end links. And new shocks cause that makes it easier to remove as well.
Always nice to see another installment of the Whats for Lunch segment. Nice quick gravy job is a nice change.

SMA before bed gotta love it
I love how you say you pissed and moaned about it...i thought i was the only one who said that! great video!
Woweeee that rust belt is something else on the vehicals u work on.
One thing I learned from you a while back is to use MOOG suspension parts. Tried the others and regretted it. Thanks.
Looks whose editing skills are getting better and better all the time.... Not many folks understand what goes into a silly hand washing scene.....good stuff...
Kroil is the best !! Suprised to see someone else using it!
I remember removing the cv joints on a 95' k1500 suburban without disconnecting the ball joints but you made look do easy 😁
ms.o with the cookin skills
For anyone wondering if you can get it out without taking sway bar link off, the answer is yes just did it, lil tedious but not ad bad as i thought
Thank you I’ve had a hard time how to replace it that look pretty easy
Good video great detail, I personally have never had to take the sway bar link out
Great job ,Mr o and tell Mrs o the fish looked very good and hope you both enjoyed your lunch

Hi Mr an Mrs O happy Thursday
Luv my Astro stubby 1/2"
Holy crap you discovered Kroil? The best by far
I was about to roast you on only one side sway bar bushings. Nice save. Good video. Mrs O lovely as always.
Just would like to say, I love my Astro 204, I got it about 4 maybe 5 months ago Solid unit for sure!
Shop supplies make the surgeon!

Double checks to make sure I chose the right video when it starts with breakfast
thumbs up from London, England too! thx Eric!

I've had several of them go bad. The last one on my 08 Chevy I just replaced the whole truck, but it was time to let it go. It only had 66,000 miles on it, but wanted a 2500 hd this time

You make that look easy. I am ready. I am now the proud owner of a 1989 chevrolet ck 2500 hd. Needs a driver side CV. I'll let you know how it goes.
How'd it go? About to do this job on a 1990 K2500

Agreed!
