Great video, I've worked in too many shops to not point out that the best practice is to hold down the brakes until you get a good star pattern rotation at least two times while the tire is in the air, then lay it down gently so you can rotate the nuts to the proper torque specification. In addition, it's okay to use anti-sieze on any of these nuts so they will not strip during torque rotations. Drive 50 miles or so, then check your lugs again for loosening.
Great video thanks! Just did this on a 2000 2500. Bought the replacement part online and once installed it would not rotate beyond 1/8th of a turn. Took the brakes apart thinking I dropped a bolt somewhere, nothing. 3 hours of frustration later took it off and bought another from O’Reilly’s and it spun freely and without binding, you know, like it should. Part ended up being from China 🤷🏼♂️. Hopefully someone will learn from my misery and buy from the auto parts stores 😂. Great video
Haha i live in phx az so away from both! The only problem here is when your wrenching in the summer and its 110 degrees out things are always so blasted hot!😂
@@MaxF01 I want to get the engine rebuilt or a new one put in soon , tired of living around the city with these b.s mandates , I'm ready to live back out on my land in the woods
Thank you for your video! I have the same truck 05' Z71 - I got a quote of $1,100.00 to do both on mine... I'm doing it myself. As everyone here has said already, great video! Oh, just curious why you didn't grease the spindle when you put the new one in?
I just did my hub assembly and the best way I figured out was to put your tire back on finger tight and drop it till the tire is on the ground so the weight of the truck holds the wheel in place
Use a screwdriver in the vents of your rotor and spin until it's stopped by the caliper bracket, then you won't have to risk stripping your wheel studs
If you don't have an extra person to hold the brake for you, can you just shift the transfer case to 4WD to lock everything in place with only one wheel off the ground at a time?
Love this video. Other than the jack stands I probably would’ve put some anti seize on the axle splines if you ever have take it off you’ll thank yourself.
Thats a very good idea! The only one that might be an issue is the axle nut because it is supposed to have a cover over it but if a guy could get the cover off without taking off the rim then that would definitely be the way to go👍🏼 heck it would still probably be worth doing it solo to take off the rim and put it back on just because it can be pretty annoying trying to hold it from turning. I appreciate the advice
What size are the bolts on the rear? I’m having troubles finding them my truck when I bought it didn’t come with any on one side as it was missing the cb axle
Is the outside Axel nut a 35mm or 36mm he states 36mm in video? (Someone mentioned a 35mm in comments talking about torque specs for the outside and inside)Also what is the size of the inside bolts thread pitch and length mine have all fallen out. And I can't find any information online anywhere about the size thread pitch and length on those bolts thank you in advance
What I always do to hold the hub from spinning is take a smaller screwdriver and stick it through the top of the brake caliper and into one of the slots on the top of the rotor and it will hold it for you no need to mash the brakes or lock it in 4x4
Ummm.. hmmm. Better "pro" tip... remove the tyre, then the dust cap, and while the wheel is on the ground you loosen the centre nut. No risk of bending a screwdriver jammed in the rotor, or damaging any other part like the backing plate, brake lines etc... if the screwdriver slips. Or in this case bending the threads on the wheel studs by wedging something between the studs !! Yikes !!
@@ajbarnes2666 Neither. I just don't think you should call it a "pro" tip when there is a risk of damaging or breaking anything. Call it an "idea", or "another option". 👍

The 35mm nut is 177ft lbs.
Actually OEM specs are 155lbs for axle nut..

36mm

Why not break axle bolt loose with wheel and tire on the ground take center cap off and dust cover
@garycantrell2307 I don't see why you couldn't do that. Thought about that more than once. As I've did this several times.
That’s exactly how I do it I used the weight of the car in the tires to keep them from spinning tire doesn’t have to come off for this replacement
Late to the party, but thanks for posting this, it looks alot easier than I thought it would be

You can keep the hub from spinning by jamming a screwdriver into the fins(vents) on the edge of the rotor then let that rest on the brake caliper.

You can change the axle without removing the wheel, but jacked up you can spin the axle to remove the bolts tho. It's easy as pie.
Pro tip: Put a screwdriver through the caliper and into rotor slots to hold the hub still

For safety should put a jack stand under the frame
If you put it 4x4, the hub won't move when removing the axle nut
This will also work on Yukon Denalis , escalades , 4wd Tahoe/suburban, gmc sierra 4wd(Z71)
Screw driver in the rotor slots will stop it from rotating.
Thanks for the advice man 👍🏼
