If you need to pickup an axle nut socket (36 mm) you can get it here: amzn.to/30fYnC3
If you need a 1/2" drive breaker bar you can get it here: amzn.to/2FL9YBe
If you need a socket set that includes a 15mm socket you can get it here: amzn.to/2RPoIng
If you need a jack you can get one here: amzn.to/2xo4XK8 - Спорт
The 5 bolts on the one end are 57 ft lbs.
The 35mm nut is 177ft lbs.
Actually OEM specs are 155lbs for axle nut..
Lol
Is it a 35mm or 36mm he states 36mm in video? Also what is the size of the inside bolts thread pitch and length mine have all fallen out
36mm
What size is the 6 bolts on the end of the cv axle?
Late to the party, but thanks for posting this, it looks alot easier than I thought it would be
No problem man, haha thats exactly what I thought before i learned how to do it!
Great video, I've worked in too many shops to not point out that the best practice is to hold down the brakes until you get a good star pattern rotation at least two times while the tire is in the air, then lay it down gently so you can rotate the nuts to the proper torque specification. In addition, it's okay to use anti-sieze on any of these nuts so they will not strip during torque rotations. Drive 50 miles or so, then check your lugs again for loosening.
Thanks man and thanks a lot for the great advice!!
Why not break axle bolt loose with wheel and tire on the ground take center cap off and dust cover
@garycantrell2307 I don't see why you couldn't do that. Thought about that more than once. As I've did this several times.
Got the two new front axles installed. Escalade drives like its brand new again. Thanks again for your video.
Thats awesome to hear my friend you are very welcome!! Im so happy it helped!
I have seen ten videos on this and your video been the best by far. Thank you
Thank you!!
Thank you for the super helpful video... I had to change the passenger side on my 05... Your video was a great help
Appreciate the straight forward video. Thanks!
changing the passenger side on my 05, first video i watched and look like you got it covered. thanks
Good luck dude and your welcome!
Nice. Next time make sure to use a jack stand along with the hydraulic jack and you may live to do a few more of these informative videos.
Good point 👍🏼
Thanks for the refresh. It's been forever since I've done one.
No problem! Hope it goes well for you 👍🏼
Thanks for your video. I will, be changing two on my Cadillac Escalade tomorrow. Your video was great.
Thank you and you are welcome!
Very clean and professional and right on video, perfect for anyone that don’t know how to replace a cv axle. 👍🏽
Thank you very much!
I really appreciate the video, you saved me a lot of money
No problem man im happy it was helpful!!
Great video. You make it look super easy
Thank you!
Love this video. Other than the jack stands I probably would’ve put some anti seize on the axle splines if you ever have take it off you’ll thank yourself.
Nice job helped me out a lot!
Thanks man im glad it helped!
Great video thank you , I gotta do mine this weekend
Best Video For This Make & Model! Thank You Sir!!
Thank you Sir and your very welcome!
Great video ! Alot of help . Thanks !
Thank you im glad it was helpful!!
Brother... thank you. This saved me cash and time.
No problem im glad to hear!!
Thank you for your video! I have the same truck 05' Z71 - I got a quote of $1,100.00 to do both on mine... I'm doing it myself. As everyone here has said already, great video! Oh, just curious why you didn't grease the spindle when you put the new one in?
Thank you! This helps greatly.
No problem im glad it was helpful!
Thanks man, good vid 👍🏼
Thanks Viking🙏🏼
Super sweet. Thanks!
Very nice video thank you very much for your nice work
Thanks man, that was perfect.
Your very welcome man happy to help!
Your the goat bro 🎉
Thank you!!
What size are the bolts on the rear? I’m having troubles finding them my truck when I bought it didn’t come with any on one side as it was missing the cb axle
Reward yourself for this fantastic video with an electric impact!
You can keep the hub from spinning by jamming a screwdriver into the fins(vents) on the edge of the rotor then let that rest on the brake caliper.
Me gusto tu vídeo muy bien explicado
Gracias amigo me aorraste mucho dinero y me quitaste stres
Nice jack stands
solid video 👍🏼
Thank you 🙏🏼
Geat video . look up the torque specs and Torque bolts.
You are either the luckiest mechanic in the world or you live somewhere away from snow and or the ocean!😄
Haha i live in phx az so away from both! The only problem here is when your wrenching in the summer and its 110 degrees out things are always so blasted hot!😂
@@MaxF01 I live in phoenix and just paid to get mine done at big o but now im like damn , probably coulda done if myself
@@AndreBruning Absolutely! At least next time something goes out you can look it up and hopefully do it yourself!👍🏼
@@MaxF01 true , living in an hoa sucks tho if you have anything sitting out for to long they'll complain
@@MaxF01 I want to get the engine rebuilt or a new one put in soon , tired of living around the city with these b.s mandates , I'm ready to live back out on my land in the woods
Great video
Thanks a lot Matt
Old axle nut is 35mm, The new nut in box is 36mm.. And the nuts are nut interchangeable...Just FYI.. Good Video btw
Is there torque specs at all for the axle nut and axle bolts?
Gonna do this tomorrow morning, I’ll be back tomorrow night to let you know how it goes
Hope everything goes well and good luck to you!!
@@MaxF01 about an hour to take off and an hour to put back on, great vid. Thanks brotha 🤙🏽
@kingsman3506 not bad at all! Im glad to hear it went well man no problem!! 🍻
Thanks man 👌
What size bolts are on the inner joint that connects to the front dif?
Use a screwdriver in the vents of your rotor and spin until it's stopped by the caliper bracket, then you won't have to risk stripping your wheel studs
Awesome awesome thank you so much 👍
No problem! 👍🏼
Was your issue being wobbly steering wheel when you didn’t change it the first time ?
Just curious do u have to use the nut to suck in the cv in more
Great vid can u put in the description which cv axles u got for this application?
Is the outside Axel nut a 35mm or 36mm he states 36mm in video? (Someone mentioned a 35mm in comments talking about torque specs for the outside and inside)Also what is the size of the inside bolts thread pitch and length mine have all fallen out. And I can't find any information online anywhere about the size thread pitch and length on those bolts thank you in advance
My neighbor did the 05 suburban said he didn't have to take off the wheel. I believe it's the same as the Silverado, Yukon, Cadillac,
Did you had to put some locktread on the bolts of the cv axle
What axle did you use
Muy bien explicado
Do those boots come pre-greased?
I removed the shock. Made it easier for pulling the axel out.
If you don't have an extra person to hold the brake for you, can you just shift the transfer case to 4WD to lock everything in place with only one wheel off the ground at a time?
Hmm ive never tried that so i cant say for sure but it sounds like it should work. Thats a really good idea!
What size socket for axle nut?
I recommend leaving the tire on when you take the axle nut off. The rotor won't spin on you.
Thanks 😊
No problem! 😁
Good video doesn’t look hard at all I will be replacing mines instead of spending a lot of money
Thanks man you shouldnt have any trouble👍🏼
Thanks!!!!
No problem!!
Do you have a leveling kit installed or did you just crank up the stock keys?
I have a leveling kit
Thanks
No problem
Just loosen the nut while it's on the ground dont risk messing up the threads on your wheel bearing
Hope its easy as u make it.
I see you don’t have a axle nut dust cover so you wouldn’t have needed to take wheel off. Then you could’ve used tire to hold wheel in place.
Was there a squeezing sound when driving?
someone help me...my inner cv joint is missing 2 bolts and when I rotate the wheel in a circle i can hear the grinding coming from inside of where it connects. what do I need??
Differential service. Could be bearings.
What CV Axels are those?
Part #
I just did this on my 2003 and it was very easy to remove and replace but now my ABS light goes on and off all the time. Why would this happen. Trucks drives great on new axle but unsure why the new axle caused this and how to fix???
How the inside bolts tide down ft/lb ???
Brake everything loose with the vehicle weight & wheel on ground...then jack up
Thats a very good idea! The only one that might be an issue is the axle nut because it is supposed to have a cover over it but if a guy could get the cover off without taking off the rim then that would definitely be the way to go👍🏼 heck it would still probably be worth doing it solo to take off the rim and put it back on just because it can be pretty annoying trying to hold it from turning. I appreciate the advice
You can change the axle without removing the wheel, but jacked up you can spin the axle to remove the bolts tho. It's easy as pie.
i'm trying to do the driver side and that bottom plate seems to be in my way. What am i doing wrong?
Gotta take the plate off
Muy bien muchas gracias por la explicaciones para poner la flecha me enseño a ponerla gracias de nuevo saludos desde guasave Sinaloa
Great Vid. But where is your jack stand or are you Superman?
What kind of shock you have on your truck. Great video man
Thanks a lot man! They are Bilsteins, i think the 5100 series
@@MaxF01 thanks I'm trying to replace the one's from my truck and i kinda want something like what u have on your truck. I have an 05 silverado tho
@@chrisyo295 heck yea man mines an 05 too! The bilstein ones are pretty cool because they are a little bit longer than the regular ones so that if your truck has a couple inches of lift in the front they will still work
Great video just a thought put brick or rock on brake pedal ??
Thanks man, thats a great idea i think it would probably work!
Other than yhe tear in the boot, did you notice something wrong with the driving
What's this for? And where does it go
If you put it 4x4, the hub won't move when removing the axle nut
I’m doing hubs and cvs for my 2011 z71 so I can make it to Florida from Virginia
Pro tip: Put a screwdriver through the caliper and into rotor slots to hold the hub still
Ummm.. hmmm. Better "pro" tip... remove the tyre, then the dust cap, and while the wheel is on the ground you loosen the centre nut. No risk of bending a screwdriver jammed in the rotor, or damaging any other part like the backing plate, brake lines etc... if the screwdriver slips. Or in this case bending the threads on the wheel studs by wedging something between the studs !! Yikes !!
@@DT-ge8gd Was this supposed to be an insult?
@@DT-ge8gd Or did it offend you when I said "Pro tip"?
@@ajbarnes2666 Neither. I just don't think you should call it a "pro" tip when there is a risk of damaging or breaking anything. Call it an "idea", or "another option". 👍
why not just lock in the 4x4?
What I always do to hold the hub from spinning is take a smaller screwdriver and stick it through the top of the brake caliper and into one of the slots on the top of the rotor and it will hold it for you no need to mash the brakes or lock it in 4x4
Thanks for the advice man i appreciate it👍
@Max F no problem man🤙🏻
I should of read your 5 month old comment before I said the same thing lol
This will also work on Yukon Denalis , escalades , 4wd Tahoe/suburban, gmc sierra 4wd(Z71)
nice I have a 05 I got to get a new cv axle on it mine came off wen I was going 65 not fun
Sounds dicey!! Not fun at all! At least its a fairly quick and easy fix
@@MaxF01 I have a friend that's helping me with it I don't know jack on fixing cars and trucks
@@MaxF01 so thank you know I know what to do and what tools I will need
@@giboron haha when mine broke i didnt know jack either! I had a buddy help me fix mine and thats the only reason i know how. Mine broke right when we were getting to our campsite to go camping so it was such a buzzkill
@@giboron glad to help and best of luck! You shouldnt have any problems
Don’t forget to check the tire 🛞 nuts after awhile or they can come loose and tire fall off. Been doing this for years forgot once to check them after week and had that happen had noob moment then 😂😂😂😂
Instead of having someone hold the brakes use the power of the truck to losen the axle nut. Put socket on and gently move forward if doing passengers side and reverse if doing driver's side.
First vid I've seen where you didnt remove the sway bar links . Every other vid has that step but I thought it was unnecessary.
For safety should put a jack stand under the frame
What about the jack stand? There is no way I would do this job with out a stand. Crazy
Jack stands are definitely a good idea
Some people have way too much faith in jacks
Can you still drive without putting back the axel? Because I’m not using my 4x4 any time soon
Nope, unfortunately not, learned this the hard way as a kid. The wheel bearing will just fall apart without atleast the end of the shaft in there with the main hub nut on it to hold it together
Good video but with only having one point of contact with the jack. Not good. He should be using jack stands for safety
Thank you, i definitely agree i should be using jack stands
And wheel chocks behind and in front of at least one of the back wheels. Never trust just your E-brake.
@@penmakerar very good point, thank you for the advice!
Optional
Screw driver in the rotor slots will stop it from rotating.
Thanks for the advice man 👍🏼
So I put my new CV axle in and tightened it all down test drove started wobbling bad and felt like my break was on
Some don't need the dust shield. If its bent it didn't fit.
Might have been easier to loosen the 36 mm nut before putting the truck up in the air
A new cv axle doesn’t come with the washer , my old axle didn’t have a washer
With all of the safety precautions ignored you still managed to complete your job with your health intact. Watch out for “Murphy” though. He will catch up on you eventually if you keep ignoring common safety practices. Also besides using proper torque on your fasteners you should grease the splines on the end of the axle shaft before installing. Other than that, good job.
Rats. My 2001 Silverado 1500 ext cab 2WD CV joint does not look anything like this one. Mine does not tie into the wheel through the middle... It has a single long shaft that attaches at a right angle to the protrusion on the front of the steering knuckle inside the wheel rim... been searching for two hours online for a diagram and the only one I can find that matches mine is someone's blasted pinterest post and I can't find the diagram through that to save my life.... Frankly not sure what the issue is. Have a strange loud wum-wum-wum tire noise kind of sound that gets faster and slower as I drive/slow down... no other noises, no clicking, no squeaking, no shimmy, no throwing to one side or the other, steering is great...just this really annoying sound... wondering if maybe the struts are going but ride is just as stable as it has always been. Sigh. Will keep looking.
it looks like you didnt have to remove the tire to do this job but nice video other wise. if you didnt remove the tire then you wouldnt need anyone to hold the brakes.
Thank you! That is a good point 👍🏼
Depends if you have the inner hub cover. He doesn’t.
@@octaneaddictions8198 hmmm so you could pop the wheel off, remove the dust cover, put the wheel back on, drop the jack and finish the job with wheel on the ground......
Great vid, but work safe, use a jack stand.
Next time take the axle not loose before you take the wheel off while it's on the ground
