  • Visited Patrick Henry Mall in Newport News, Virginia to find a mall that is actually thriving in the current retail landscape. It’s a surprise. Located in Newport News, Virginia

Here is Doomie’s video with good shots of the food court. My food court footage got corrupted and I couldn’t use. ruclips.net/video/hAJxsMk0fX4/видео.html

We used to live 5 minutes from this mall when my husband was stationed at Langley AFB. I'm glad to see that it's thriving.

The movie theater closed back in Aug 31 2000. The last movies I remember watching there was Titanic and The Bone Collector. We have had a lot of movie theater competition over the last 35 years. Everytime a new onw opens the older establishd one eventually died.
REGAL cinemas 10 min away in nearby York county came along and the mall movie theater slowed down. Then AMC 24 in Hampton was built. It was very popular.

The AMC 24 looks gigantic. I believe the movie theater was next to the food court?

Patrick Henry seemed to have a downturn for like 5 years or so where it seemed always very empty but in the past few years any time I've been there it's been packed. More vacant spaces than back in it's prime but still tons of stores open.

This seems to be a healthy mall. Plus the closest one is about 20 miles away which I’m sure helps.

I remember when it was relatively new. It got expanded in the late 1990s. I haven´t been there since 2012, but it was the place to be when I was in my teens and 20s. The mall as we know it is a 1970s and 80s business model. In the early 1990s, New Market Mall died a slow horrible death, because people were getting robbed in the parking lot. I used to go to the movie there up until 2000. The last movie I ever saw there was Shanghai Noon.

From what I’ve watched online local retail experts are saying Patrick Henry and Lynnhaven are probably going to be the two malls to come out on the other side of this.

I grew up in Newport News and remember when they bought the land from the yoders (that used to be all farm land) I spent many a day at that mall! It was nice to watch your video and the memories that came back. Glad to see it’s still thriving

I see you added the Yoder’s info in… commented a bit too early 😂 the Yoder’s had a little ice cream shop we used to ride our bicycles too, it wasn’t at the mall though, it was over by colony road

The experts claim this mall and Lynnhaven are probably all that’s going to be left. Will see.

Patrick Henry is doing well despite being in Newport News. It’s predicted along with Lynnhaven to continue thriving. Could help the distance to another enclosed mall.

@@DyingRetail Oh. That sucks then. I live in Newport News & yes Patrick Henry is doing good. I'm glad one mall is surviving. I miss Coliseum & Newmarket Malls. My employer bought New Market mall & turned it into offices. When I go there it feels so weird to see all the stores drywalled in to form offices. The fountain near the elevator is all drained. But that same cafeteria (I forget the name) that was there when it was Newmarket is still there. 🤷

It's not as good as it used to be. But it is still around. Coliseum mall & Newmarket North mall did not make it. Newmarket North is now office space for the company that I work for Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding. The Newmarket Mall used to have a carousel in it. That is now located in downtown Hampton.

I have a gimbal. Try walking with one in these malls and stick out to security. Most of these management companies have the mall cops harass anyone filming.

On this day there were so many walkers I think subconsciously I was keeping up with them. I try and remind myself to slow my walking. I’m going to try the action mode next time and see if that helps.
