    I keep lace curtains on my windows to keep birds from flying into them. sheers are good too. and because they are escape artists and can fly out the door in seconds, use beaded curtains over doorways

    If you have a nail, feather, or bleeding wound you can also use cornstarch or styptic powder for dogs to speed up the clotting process.

    • @BUBCvision
      @BUBCvision 6 лет назад

      I am an experienced cockatiel owner for the past 25 years but this is only the second time one of my birds caught a cold and unfortunately my very 1st cockatiel died after treatment with antibiotics. I have 4 cockatiels now. This one is one of my original broods a real song bird. I went away on holiday for 2 weeks and left them in the care of another bird owner. Unfortunately they were not well looked after and their very large aviary was extremely dirty with little food and water on our return. I have separated him into a hospital unit & left him in full sunlight all day and covered him up for a solid 12 hr sleep. I placed honey in his water and changed it several times. Gave him amino acid enriched flax seed along with extra pumpkin, linseed, kale, milled Goji Berries in his regular seeds. He also was given apple and lettuce which he hardly touched. I am happy to say that he has picked up 100% and is calling to the other birds in hope of joining them. I think I should continue to isolate him for at least 3 days in total is that wise?

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  6 лет назад +1

      Isolation is a good idea, just to be certain, in case it is something that can be spread from bird to bird. Sounds like you are taking very good care of him! If he is on a seed based diet, along with his fruit & vegetables, but no pellets, he may benefit from a Vitamin, Mineral and Amino Acid Supplement, such as Multivet.

    • @BUBCvision
      @BUBCvision 6 лет назад

      It can't hurt so I'll go get him & share with the others whatever equivalent to Multivet they have in Quebec Canada . This is really helpful thanks

    sadly there are not enough avian vets in regional Australia, our nearest one is a 5 hour drive away, and the vet we have in our town have very limited knowledge of birds, he actually said we know more than what they do, they are good for physical injury such as splayed legs, or broken wing but actual illness, common response is if they bird is showing illness then it is on its way out. sad but true.

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  7 лет назад

      Unfortunately we know all too well about this problem, there are some promising young veterinarians and veterinary students coming through with a keen interest in exotics these days, however they are few and far between.

      Same problems in Italy, birds keeping and showing is very popular but it's very-very hard to find a Vet that specializes in birds...most of the times us breeders we seek help and advice on forums and online groups but you need to be very careful because some people think they can make a diagnosis and prescribe a cure over a picture or a video they've seen. Antibiotics and medicines abuse in doing a lot of damage in the long run...birds are becoming weak and hard to breed.

    Hi there. thanks for the video. it was informative.
    1- could you please tell what antibiotic can we keep at home just in case we need to start giving it to the bird if need be.
    there are hardlyy any good vets that deal with birds on regular basis and the vet that we have found in our city, it takes time to take the bird there at times appointment takes time and so forth... so what should be given to prevent the infection, if any, from aggravating??
    2- please tell what to give to parrots/baby parrots that start sneezing?

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  5 лет назад

      Hi Tannia, thank you for watching our video! We manufacture several types of antibiotics but they all have different active ingredients to treat different illnesses so the effectiveness will depend on what is causing the illness. The only antibiotic that we manufacture that is available at most pet stores without having to see a veterinarian is called Triple C. It is effective against E Coli (Enteritis), Mycoplasma (Chronic Respiratory Disease) and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). Another really good product to have in your avian first aid kit is Poly Aid Plus. It contains sustained-release carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, probiotics and electrolytes. It works by giving the bird enough energy to fight the illness off themselves. We also produce a product called Coccivet for treatment of Coccidiosis which can be purchased at most pet stores. The rest of our antibiotic treatments must be purchased through a veterinarian. We would still recommend getting any bird showing signs of illness to a veterinarian as soon as possible. Parrots/baby parrots that begin sneezing could be due to a number of reasons and we would recommend giving them Poly-Aid Plus and taking them to a veterinarian as soon as possible.

    I have a parakeet that I had previously brought to a local veterinarian who had prescribed baytril for it symptoms or tail-bobbing, clear nasal discharge out of one nostril and slight wheezing. Dan Hibiki was on it for 10 day's it seemed to have minimize his symptoms if at all. He has had a reocorunce of the clear nasal discharge and seems to rubbing his beak and head in the same area and still has the tail-bobbing and very slight wheezing that becomes more pronounced when he is excited or has done something very strenuous. Is there something else I can try or get prescribed for him or do in the meantime? The vet said it could be anything from a vitamin-a deficiency to a seed being stuck in his nose/airways. I could not afford the more advanced lab test to determine what the true bacterium was and opted for the simple poop smear test at the time of his week almost two weeks ago. He still eat's, and get's groomed and grooms my cocktail Junior, and act's like his normal self. I just don't want him to be in any pain or suffering from his particular aliments.

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  7 лет назад

      Hi Nicholas, your vet sounds like they are fairly on the ball about birds which is good, I would advise not giving any more antibiotics until you know what bacterium you are dealing with, as you will start to build antibiotic resistance, and we definitely do not want that. Perhaps continue with the process you are doing now, as long as he is eating and drinking well and behaving normally I would not stress too much. If you can work on saving a little bit of money for a culture and sensitivity swab on the nasal fluid that would be much more beneficial.

      Great to hear that you are supplementing. If feeding seed diets, birds definitely need supplements. On pellets they wont need any supplements, except if you wanted to help boost their calcium during breeding season, that is a good idea.

    Doctor, I have a 7 year old Cockateil and he has been passing watery stools since last Thursday. The feacus seems like bits and scattered and the urea is webby and white. Sometimes it’s just water and nothing else. I tried an antibiotic ofloxacin and metranidazole for 2 days. It seemed like getting better but back to being watery again. Will the triple c and symbiotic help? If yes, how and when should these be given? Kindly advice

    I did a huge mistake, I got another conure a week ago when i come after work my both conures are always with me but today one of them was on my shoulder i didn't felt that the another one is missing and she was staying over the door i didn't saw her and i pushed the door she started to fly around and after that she stopped in panic I went to the vet immediately but they said that they are not specialists and they don't know how to treat exotic birds I don't know where else to go, she is not looking good for me she is fluffied and closing her eyes and sitting alone , I know that this is not a good sign . She still can fly i saw her today drinking water and she eat little bit fruits after the accident but usually she is eating a lot and I'm worried that she is in shock and can't get over it What I should do to help her? I'm feeling really bad i never though i will do something like that and I don't wanna she to feel any pain because I have no idea how she feels.

    • @vetafarm

      Hi Gabrielle, did you mean your male Gouldian Finch? If so, it is common for male Gouldian finches to experience hormonal imbalances that results in symptoms like these. We would recommend having him checked by a veterinarian. If you cannot do that, the first thing we would recommend doing, is to rest him far away from any females.

    Hello,, Veta Farm !! I have a very important question!? My Amazon parrot 🦜 My love. Out of nowhere!!
    She broke her beak! 😱 ( not too large)but enough that. She bled a little and I held her and quickly applied a sterilized mini wipe and held it firmly on the end. It finally formed a clot. Seeing my vet tomorrow. I would like to know if you have already done a video on this type of injury!? If not may you do one?
    When this happened, I couldn’t stop shaking and going back and forth in panic. I new what to do but, she is my baby.

      Vetafarm thank You 🙏🏼. I still would like more feedback if you possibly have the time? She is much better! And her Aviary Vet says her break was straight across, said that that is an easier to heal break. As a posed to zig zagged
      And less nerve pain. So she is eating a bit now and starting to play with her toys. And best of all. She won’t let my husband get close to me. Love it. When she was in great health. She would absolutely go after my broom. She is protective of me. And I her. We are best of friends. My baby. Thank you for everything you do. Fan forever.

    thank you very much.but for hour many days must the bird stay in the small box hospital and can we use a torch as a source of light.please reply soon.

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  8 лет назад

      +Shivanee Caully As it depends on why your bird is unwell I cannot provide a time frame for how many days the bird must stay in the box. If the bird does not start to improve within a few hours it is suggested that you have your bird seen by an Avian Veterinarian ASAP. As for a torch, it will depend on what kind of torch you are wanting to use the birds don't need a "light source" as such but they require a warm spot, and most lights will provide some heat, for example a 60 watt light globe.

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  4 года назад

      Hi, thank you for watching and commenting on our video. These symptoms could be caused by quite a variety of different illnesses and therefore we would recommend travelling her to a veterinarian for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, we would recommend following the instructions on this video to help her fight the illness. Poly-Aid Plus is not a treatment, but is a great product for sick birds as it contains sustained-release carbohydrates, proteins, probiotics and electrolytes. These help to give the bird some energy. We do have an over the counter broad spectrum antibiotic called Triple C, that is for the treatment of bacterial infections including E. Coli (Enteritis), Mycoplasma (Chronic Respiratory Disease) and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). If you feel that your budgerigar may have a respiratory infection, it might be worth giving her a course of this antibiotic. Please ensure that you follow up the antibiotic treatment with Synbiotic or Probotic to re-establish the gastrointestinal flora in the bird. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at sales@vetafarm.com.au or on (02)69330400.

      You should give the probiotic for 10 days after the antibiotic course. If your other cockatiels are "flat" looking I would recommend treating them with the antibiotics also. If they normally whistle and are not then they may be starting to get sick.

      Hello, if you can put your birds on to a pellet diet that will be better for their health. You can put the pellets in their food bowl with the seed and transition them to pellets. Some birds take longer to take to pellets than others and you don't want to starve your birds.
      Why are they on Baytril?

      Dear Irteaza, it is difficult to know what antibiotics or treatment is required for your bird without doing a consultation and determining the extent of the injury to the bird. We would recommend you see your avian vet and have them examine the bird and it’s injury. Most importantly, ensure you keep the bird warm and hospitalised until it can be seen by a vet and you may also want to administer some Poly Aid Plus as a first aid supplement.

    I found a grown bird outside. It had it’s head burried in its wing and I doubt it was able to fly. I took it home cause it’s going to get eaten by animals outside. There’s some brown liquid discharge from it and its feathers are puffy. It rarely moves its head. It tried flapping its wings but I don’t think it can fly since I almost stepped on it outside too. I followed the instructions of the hospital cage but what should I do now?

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  5 лет назад

      Hi, thank you for commenting. It sounds like the bird you found might be quite sick. We would recommend getting the bird to a veterinarian or a wildlife carer for treatment. In the meantime you could give the bird a supplement such as Poly-Aid Plus to administer concentrated nutrients in one direct dose.

    Hello! I have a female cockatiel that has an upper respiratory infection.. She is currently on antibiotics and is doing great! however, I was just wondering if keeping her at an ambient temperature of 85 degrees constantly is a good idea or is it good to give her a littler break from the heat? Thank you in advance! She has a tendency to get active if I take her into a cooler part of the house with me (She is very clingy, wants to always be on my shoulder)

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  7 лет назад +1

      Hi, there's no harm in her having short breaks away to play and interact if she is feeling up to it. However if she were to want to rest and have a nap I would then take her back to the heat and allow her to rest in the warmth.
      I understand it can be very difficult to keep a healthy bird still, while she is on the mend, be sure to try to encourage her to rest plenty.

      Hi Anthony, the hospital box has no set time frame for it's use. Ideally you will use the hospital box from the point you notice the bird is unwell until you feel the bird is better, I strongly recommend using a hospital box when you cannot get the bird to a veterinarian straight away. As for the heat source, I would suggest using it whilst the bird is in hospital. However if it is a hot day, you may not need it.

      Hello, the bird doesn't need to see while he is inside the box, we are covering him so he can rest and not be stressed by things on the outside. The hospital box is used when you can't take your bird to the vet straight away, so you can keep him in the box until you can take him to a veterinarian. If he is unwell you can use Vetafarm's Poly-Aid Plus until you can take him to a vet, this will provide him with electrolytes to keep him hydrated, carbohydrates and proteins to give him energy to survive.

      Hi Thishitha, thank you for commenting on our video! Unfortunately those symptoms can be a variety of illnesses and without a veterinary diagnosis it is very difficult to give you a treatment that we know would work! The Triple C will assist with Enteritis, Chronic Respiratory Disease and Chlamydia (Psittacosis). It is a broad spectrum antibiotic however it may or may not treat your birds illness depending on what is causing the illness. You would need a diagnosis for us to accurately give you the name of a treatment that would work. :)

      I am not sure about any of the Harrison diets, I am not familiar with the diet that you speak of. I would recommend getting in contact with Harrisons and asking them. You don't want your bird to be overweight though, if she is overweight I would cut back on the amount of food provided until she is a good weight, or switch to a maintenance formula that is lower in fat.

      +HammyHamster If you are not too concerned with the colour of his poop then I would recommend using Vetafarm Probiotic on him for a few weeks and see if this helps to reset his tummy, birds also tend to avoid showing any weakness/illness as it could get them injured or killed in the wild, so he may actually be sick and just be trying to hide it from you.

    HI,
    i wanted to know what is going on with my zebra finch she is acting normal but the problem is she has no feathers under its wing and all round its belly. Now when i asked my friends about that they said that it is just changing her feathers but she laid an egg before so it is not small, so that is the first thing i want to know weather she is sick or is that normal and if she is then how to treat her.
    Now i have a second question i found out from a video that all of that could be caused by an egg stuck in her like she needs help getting it out , now if that is true how do i know for sure that it is an egg bound not a some kind of mite doing all of this.
    I have a final question when i was looking at it i saw something weird it had like little yellow balls and fluid in her neck now is that something i should worry about or is that normal PLEASE answer me ASAP this bird is very important to me.
    Thanks

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  7 лет назад

      Hello.
      Egg binding and egg laying does usually not result in feather loss.
      Is she plucking these feathers out herself?
      If she is not on a complete pellet/crumble diet I would suggest trying to convert her. Majority of the time feather loss can be attributed to either malnutrition or behavioural problems. If it is a behavioural trait she may pluck her feathers when she starts to go into breeding season, around spring. For the most part though a good diet will improve her feather production and vitality. If you cannot source or convert your finch to a pellet diet then a good quality multivitamin would be essential to use with a seed diet.
      As for the yellow balls of fluid in the neck. I would strongly suggest having her seen by an avian specialist vet. This does not sound normal...

      Give the enrofloxacin (baytril) alone, do not give with tetracycline at the same time.
      For lice and mites you can use Vetafarm Avian Insect Liquidator (A.I.L) but if she is sneezing it could be a respiratory infection, enrofloxacin (baytril) is very good for respiratory conditions. How much enrofloxacin (baytril) do you have? Do you have enough to give treatment for 14 days?

      Hi, that is ok, we are happy to help. I would suggest clipping your birds wings if you feel confident doing so, just until the birds understands where it is safe and not safe to fly. Head trauma is very serious and I would not let it keep happening. Clipping the cockatiels wings will prevent him from being able to get a lot of height off the ground and should help to stop it hitting it's head on the ceiling.

So far the bird is alive but unable to feed itself. So I learned how to feed it and give it water. I'm feeding it wheat seeds and giving it water using a syringe. What I'm struggling with is determining the proper rations of seeds and water I should give to the bird. Do you, sir, have any suggestion on this regard?! Thank you so much in advance!

      +HungryForHeaven It would depend on the age of the bird as to how much is should eat and drink, generally though, birds should consume between 8% and 10% of their body weight in food each day. I realise this is a couple of days late, did you manage to get it to the veterinarian?

      Hi, thank you for contacting us! You have done the correct thing by taking the bird to a veterinarian and getting him some antibiotics. The only other thing that it could be, is an Air Sac Mite Infection. Your veterinarian should be able to provide you with a product for this kind of treatment.

      @@user-on2hj3yt2e Not a problem at all, I hope that your Canary feels better soon! Following antibiotic treatment, we would recommend getting it onto a probiotic supplement such as Synbiotic or Probotic to re-establish gastrointestinal flora! :)

      Hi Miss H, thank you for watching our video and commenting. We do apologize for the late reply and hope that Sparky is now on the road to recovery! Sneezing and lack of appetite can be a number of different issues and therefore would recommend she sees a veterinarian for diagnosis. :)

      Vetafarm thanks i did, they said the same as yourself, they don't really know it could be a number of things, antibiotics are the safest treatment, and it certainly appears that the antibiotics are doing the trick, thank you so much for answering, take care, thanks X

      Follow the instructions in the video and try to have your bird seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
