    The world needs more bird vets! I have a canary that when we got her had teeny little lump just above the beak where it turns fleshy. Didn't seem to bother her so we thought it was just a little defect and her birth mark or something. Then it grew and baldness started happening on her face. Her eyes became watery and she was always wiping her face. She no longer looked happy. I gave her a week long course of Baytril and saw the lump had a little scab. I thought abscess, so I gently picked at the scab and sure enough it fell off and hard pus came out. I cleaned her up and carried on the Baytril. Feather loss continued to go round the sides of her face but after the baytril she became more her old self again. But now her eyes are a little water again and there are another couple of lumps. I think she is in pain because she shouts when I try to look at her and touch her face. There is a soft yellowy swelling on her lower cheek/jaw on one side and now her breathing is open mouthed and laboured and also a sort of squeaky noise. She sneezes a lot and still rubs her face but the feathers are starting to return. We were told it was a vitamin D deficiency and the abscesses were ingrowing feathers. I am not so sure but she is the ONLY one with any kind of symptoms and this has been getting slowly worse since about March. I am worried about her and am wondering if she needs more antibiotics. However I know too much can kill her but if I do nothing, she is dead anyway. We did separate her but she got very depressed and stopped eating, drinking and even moving. She is now starting to look sorry for herself again. Any ideas? Also a canary mother of ours (no longer will be bred) chewed off the top part of the beak on it's day old baby so I hand reared it as it survived somehow. Does the beak grow back? Don't care if it does because we love it anyway and it is now somehow managing to eat seed. Thanks

      Hi Joanna, it sounds like your canary may potentially be displaying signs of Canary Pox. This is a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. As it is a virus there are no drugs you can give that will cure the disease, I would think that the Baytril is assisting in combating any secondary infections that are occurring. I strongly recommend trying to mosquito-proof your aviaries to reduce the risk of future disease spread. Your current, unwell Canary may survive the initial infection, once she builds an immunity to the virus she will carry it but no longer be symptomatic.
      The broken beaked baby will not grow it's beak back.

    • @joannawooster9948
      @joannawooster9948 8 лет назад

      I researched the pox for hours because that is what we feared it was. However we have ruled it out because everywhere we read and people we spoke to said that she and all the other birds would be dead by now. She has had the lump when we got her in March and it is now September. Normally pox kills in a couple of weeks and all the others should be dead too. However there are no signs of anything in any of the others so whatever it is, it can't be catching. That is why we thought it must be some kind of infection.
      It looked like the beak was trying to come back but it was split in the middle like a cleft lip but I think the eating of seeds has worn it away some. It's a happy little thing.

    Thank you for the clear information. I have a situation where I have treated a pair of canaries with an ivermectin solution. 1% ivomec 1cc in 16 oz of water. Gave this to them as their only water source for 24 hours. The instructions were to repeat the process in two weeks.
    My question is this: I have since ordered SCATT .
    How long does the Ivermectin stay in the system? Can you safely use both treatments? The animals are so fragile I do not want to have a drug interaction. Thank you.

    Hi and good day, First of all i would like really to thank you a lot for your interesting videos :). I bought your product because i saw some mites on some of my canary birds recently. I used the medicine on all my birds today. My question is : Is it enough to wait 21 days to treat the birds again at the beginning or should i treat the birds once a week for 3 weeks at the beginning like what i watched in the video?
    As well i placed the drop between the shoulders ( under the skin ) so as the birds wouldn't be able to eat from it. For the future would you advice me to use the medicine on the leg or should i use the medicine between the shoulders?.
    Many thanks for your time and advice :)
    Best wishes
    Sly

    Hi Dr. Gestier. Thanks for the instructional video. Today I treated my canary with Scatt for air sac mites the exact way shown in the video. I also used a 1ml syringe and filled it with ~0.05 ml of scatt. I only meant to apply one drop to his thigh but it accidently all came out so he got several drops. Will this poison him or be harmful? -Thanks

    I purchased the scatt for my canarie and put a drop between the shoulders as advised from the website but did not rub it in. When i put him back in the cage I think he shook it off fixing his feathers. What should I do...Wait 21 days and treat again they way you show in the video or should I treat again on the thigh as shown in the video right away. Any advise on this product would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    I wish I had known about this sooner! I read a study about treating birds with ivermectin and then found your video.
    I brought a new bird into my flock from a breeder/pet store that was unknown to me. I am convinced she brought mites with her. It would have been so simple to treat her as she came in. I do not usually bring pet store birds home. I have always used a known home breeder with strong healthy birds. What a simple solution!!!
    I will be treating my flock and carefully cleaning.

    Hi Guys at Vetafarm, i use a drop of ivermectin (already diluted to use on small birds) onto the skin to keep red-mites at bay; when i suspect air sac mites i dose the bird with one drop straight into the beak with great results i must say....now, what's your opinion on this practice? In Europe is a very common method used by us breeders. Thank You for all your great work!

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  7 лет назад

      Hi, I'm glad this method is proving successful for you! Unfortunately it is not something we are familiar with so cannot provide any substantial opinion on it. My only suggestion would be to ensure when applying that the birds are not inhaling any of the Ivermectin.

      +Muhammad Bilal ‎Hi Muhammad, thanks for your question. Vetafarm have not designed Scatt as an oral treatment, so unfortunately cannot recommend it to be used in this fashion. It is also important to note that Moxidectin while a very effective worming medicine, does have its flaws. Moxidectin is completely ineffective for Tapeworm control, is unstable when mixed with water and does have resistance issues with some round worms. We recommend using a safe and effective all wormer for in water or oral treatment and control of worms such as our Wormout Gel. Check out our videos on direct administration and worming in general here: ruclips.net/video/DZOTFXVlD-M/видео.html

    So I’ve realised my new canary has air sac mites and I recently just started treating it, it sleeps in the same room as my budgie (because they have the same bed time and the room I put them in is the only room that is dark and quiet) but in different cages but I am scared the air sac mites will or have started to look for fresh blood and might go to my budgie. Is this possible for them to know to go to my budgie ? I separate them in the morning in separate rooms and don’t let them out at in the same rooms as I think my budgie could kill him. But is it going to spread to my budgie if I keep to me in the same room or should I separate them even during bedtime.

      Hi, thank you for commenting on our video! Air Sac Mite do tend to spread between birds in a flock, so we generally recommend completing a flock treatment for all birds in the same aviary. As these two birds are in an enclosed environment we would recommend treating both of them. :)

      Hi Rukia, thank you for watching and commenting on our video. Air Sac Mites are not generally able to be found externally on the body, as they live in the birds Air Sacs. It sounds as though your birds may have some kind of feather mite as well. Scatt will only treat Air Sac Mites and Scaly Face Mite. Therefore, if they have feather mites or some kind of external mite, we would recommend treatment with Avian Insect Liquidator.
      We hope your birds recover soon!

    I have applied Scatt on 2 my canaries thigh 4 week ago and all symptoms nearly gone gradually. 5 days ago I have repeated the treatment and surprisingly symptoms worsen significantly. My birds are not poorly but sneezing, coughing, and squeaking non-stop. Is there any logical explanation? What should I do now to save my pets?

      Kalms and birds Scatt has to be applied once in every 21 days, total of 3 times. In other words Day1 apply scatt, Day21 apply scatt, day43 apply scatt. When u apply one dose and wait 4 weeks you let the mites reproduce and multiply.

    Dear Doctor Gestier, I would like to thank you for your helpful videos. I've learned a lot on how to handle my birds when sick from you. However, I still would like to get your opinion on one of my budgies. He has been sneezing and vomiting since the day I got him (which is now 6 months ago). He acts as normal, sings/chirps, flirts with everything, bobs his head, jumps and attempts to fly (he cannot fly though, his feathers fall before fully growing) etc. I have given him Nekton Bio to improve his feathers quality and it did work on the tail but not on his wings. As for his sneezing problem, we have tried everything. The vet did a crop wash and 2 tests for psitaccosis but came negative in both. The crop wash hasn't shown anything in particular that could cause his sneezing fits and vomiting behaviour. We started with Ivomec for a month (a drop on the back once a week so a total of 4 drops), then we were given Metronidazole, Baytril and Ornicure. Although as he was taking baytril and ornicure it seemed like he temporarely stopped sneezing, after the cure he started back shortly after. Baytril lasted 7 days and Ornicure lasted roughly 3 weeks. I don't know if I should ask the vet to give me more of one of those medication or if there is anything else I can do as they can't find anything and I don't want to make him weaker and used to the medication so much so that is not gonna have positive effects on him anymore. Is it possible to have an advice from you for this? The little baby is roughly 8-10months old and with very poor feather condition, unable to fly. Thank you

      Hi,
      From the description you give of your budgie I am very suspicious he has POLYOMA virus.
      The poor feathering and the loss of feathers before fully mature is common with chronic Polyoma virus.
      Please check with you veterinarian if they can have the Polyoma virus test done to be certain.
      Although there is no cure for Polyoma virus a diagnosis helps with management.
      The polyoma virus has many symptoms, sneezing and vomiting may be part of the complex.
      Until you get test results I would not recommend further antibiotic treatments.
      Sincerely,
      Tony Gestier

      @violetskyblue277 7 лет назад +1

      Dear Doctor Gestier, Thank you very much for your reply. I really really appreciate that. Sorry I have forgotten to mention that he has been tested for Polyoma as well as Psittacosis through 6 days worth of faeces collected as a sample (it was the less invasive way to do it, which is also the reason why we have not tested him for PBFD as he already has little feather and we didn't feel it was fair on him to have one of his feathers ripped off for the testing) and both came out to be negative. Although my vet mentioned that there can be false negatives (and positives) therefore I will follow your advice and try to test him again for polyoma virus, using a different method if possible :)

Can this be sac mites? I herd if you pick up the bird and hold it next to your ear you can hear the mites,her trouble breathing makes me want to try it. If she does have the mites and i treat her should i treat the male that is with her in the same cage even though he shows no sign he has it?

    Plz explain about breeding aid how to use it how many days we want to use help me plz

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  6 лет назад

      Hi, thank you for watching our video!
      The Vetafarm Breeding Aid is an oil-based breeding supplement for birds to assist in egg production and hatchability. It contains a unique formulation of fatty acids and vitamins. It can be used as an overnight soak on seeds, oils naturally penetrate through the seed hull into the kernel through osmosis. It assists in the normal development of egg membranes and assists birds in producing the maximum amount of fertile eggs.
      Use breeding aid during breeding season to enhance breeding success and egg membrane formation, assisting in egg production and hatchability. It is particularly useful for smaller birds that produce large numbers of eggs or multiple clutches.
      Additional vitamin, mineral and calcium supplements are still advised for birds on seed diets.
      Feeding Directions : Mix 20mL of Breeding Aid per 1kg (1 ½ fl oz. Per 5lb) of seed thoroughly by hand and allow the mixture to sit for 12 to 24 hours to maximise seed absorption. Batches of seed can be made up to last a week, with treated seed not used in the first day being stored in the refrigerator.
      At this dose rate, you can also mix it with other foods before feeding.
