my vet showed me how & had me do it with him right there, so while it IS possible & good for all bird owners to learn, don't just figure a couple vids will have u all set! He makes it look real easy, but if u have aggressive birds or other health issues, its still good to trust ur vet w/a lot of this stuff! Great demo tho! This is why bird ownership is a big responsibility & ongoing education is crucial!

I've hand raised cockatiels and doves for years, usually using a spoon or syringe and crop needles only for flushing crops or medicating. However I currently have a baby rainbow lorikeet that is the biggest challenge I've ever had, so I came here to refresh my technique.
Sherbet the lori came to me with sour crop and coccidiosis, and despite appropriate medication anything and everything makes him regurgitate (it is apparently more psychological than anything, he learned to associate eating with the pain of a yeasty crop). Even the Vet that initially showed me how to crop needle had no idea how to stop my little man regurgitating after crop feeding. Thank you so much for the tip on pinching the oesophagus, I'm finally managing to get some weight on him! If he was still unable to keep food down with a crop needle we were originally going to have him put to sleep because it's been three weeks of this and he's a bit stunted already. Now I feel he has hope, and fingers crossed will learn to enjoy food once more when his little body is bigger and stronger.
A thousand thanks from Sherbie and me :)

Hi Andrea! That is so fantastic, we're really glad Sherbert is finally starting to thrive. Kudos to you for taking on such a challenge, I'm sure that Sherbert will be very grateful that he is now in your hands.

Thanks for the informative video. I'm an Australian vet with a special interest in birds (done a fair bit of work with local avian specialists) and have recently moved to the UK where seeds remain the mainstay of nutrition and no one sells pellets! I've convinced my clinic to start getting in pellets for clients and crop needles/recovery food for sick hospitalised birds. This video was great to show my nurses to help them learn to crop feed/medicate along with my physical guidence.

U make it look so easy! But these comments below on "I hope I never have to do this" ir "wouldn't try it myself" just proves my point that owners are scared to learn this stuff! People should also maybe get some in person training on this by their vet. When I was 1st learning to do injections on birds..

The bird seems fine at the moment but still the crop is slow at best. I am not trying to put new food on top of old food but am worried he needs food. Any tips would be greatly appreciated l!

Thats an excellent tip about the size of the ball so as not to penetrate the windpipe!
Is there any advantage in using the rigid needle as opposed to a flexible one?
Ive crop fed sick parrots before but Im having problems getting the beak open on this pee-wee Im currently caring for. Had the same prob with a pigeon once. Do you recommend it, or is it just not practical?

Dr Tony Gestier,Thanks for your Reply, Yes, Wednesday was a Very Happy day BUT....NOT TODAY, It Seems the Zebra Finch Parents DO NOT KNOW...How to feed their babies! It's as If They were Asking me for HELP!
As I looked into their Nest and A dead baby got stuck on the popsicle stick I used to press down lightly on their nesting material to look into the nest. Then, I was Trying to show them that they Need to Eat and then put food into the baby's mouth. Both Parents began Eating like Crazy but Seemed Afraid of the babies and/or Still didn't KNOW how or what to do.
I've watched your Videos Over & Over about Cropping a bird.
BUT THESE ARE BABIES,....To try to help them, I should try "Hand feeding!" Is that Right?
    If so, with what?
With The food you sell, eh?
But how do I buy that Real Fast? I live in Barrie, Ontario, Canada! Do you sell that Somewhere, here?
I'm Panicing and Pervous...I want to help them BUT I didn't Expect this and I didn't get prepared.
For Now, If I give them Pureed bolied egg, carrot, sweet potatoes OR Unsalted Crackers, Do You Think that would be good?
Please tell me what I should do?
    Thank You,
    Elizabeth Wells

I have a baby budgie that is 2 weeks old and is not being fed by it's mother. Do you have any advice on what the best course of action is? The bird is very weak and I'm currently considering taking the bird from the mother to crop feed. Should I leave the bird with the mother in hopes of her starting to feed or should I create a hospital box and crop feed? If crop feeding is the best course of action do you have any further advice on crop feeding smaller birds?

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  5 лет назад

Hi Michaela, thank you for contacting us! If you do not believe that the mother is able to look after the chick herself, you may need to remove the bird from the nest and raise it yourself. I would recommend joining some online forums/budgerigar clubs where you can talk to others that hand raise budgerigars as well. You will need to have a brooder to keep the chick in, that is kept at the correct parameters, and a good quality hand rearing formula such as Neocare or Nutricore. :)

I have some green cheek conure chicks who will regurgitate / vomit a couple times after feeding them with a tube. Why is that? Is it irritating their throats? And would a quality crop needle spare them this trouble?

    • @vetafarm
      @vetafarm  6 лет назад

Hi, depending on what kind of tube you are using, it could be causing some irritation. We always encourage good quality crop needles! Also ensure that you are not overfilling their crop, as this could cause some issues as well.

    Excellent video
    i only have 1 comment
re your comment "safe as a bank"
Word of the wise... Banks are not actually safe
    most people assume they are
don't believe me, Talk to anyone who lives in Greece recently
watch them tell you how they thought their money was safe in the bank
and then the rude shock they got when they came to the realization that the bank refused to give them their money
now. you think this can't happen in countries like America or Australia hehe
    think again.
    so. long story short,
i know this is off topic of the video, and i appreciate your video
    but.
the point i'm trying to make is
do me a favour, don't program yourself and tell yourself that banks are safe
    it's a bad habit
    stop doing that.
otherwise, one day YOU MAY GET A RUDE SHOCK and be left penniless
even though you actually had hundreds of thousands of dollars of life savings IN THE BANK
    food for thought... ok
