    __________________________________________
    All birds have blood feathers, so it's important for pet bird owners to be familiar with them and to know what to do in the event that one gets broken.
    A broken blood feather can be quite an emergency for a pet bird. The reason for this is that broken blood feathers that remain in a bird's skin essentially act as an open faucet allowing blood to pour out of the bird's body. Because birds cannot tolerate much blood loss, broken blood feathers that are left untreated can be fatal in some cases.
    If you notice blood on your bird or in his cage, the first thing to do is determine if it is indeed the result of a broken blood feather. Most broken blood feathers are fairly easy to identify, as you will be able to see the blood coming directly out of the feather shaft. If you are unable to determine whether or not a broken blood feather is the source of your bird's bleeding, take your bird to an avian vet as quickly as possible for an examination and treatment.
    If you are able to identify a broken blood feather, the feather shaft must be removed from the bird's skin to stop the bleeding. To remove the broken blood feather, the first thing to do is to towel the bird. This will not only allow you to restrain your pet safely as you work to remove the feather, it will reduce the amount of stress to your bird as a result of the procedure.
    Once your bird is restrained, locate the broken blood feather.
    Wet the wing with water to clean up the blood to see where the broken blood is. Using strong tweezers, hemostats, or needlenose pliers, grasp the blood feather firmly at the base of the shaft, close to the bird's skin while holding the wing still so the wing will not get dislocated. Working as quickly as possible, pull on the base of the feather until the shaft is freed from the feather follicle.
    Once you have plucked the blood feather, place a pinch of cornstarch on the affected area to help aid clotting, and use a piece of sterile gauze to apply pressure to the feather follicle until the bleeding has stopped.
    If you are not confident to pull the blood feather you must seek out veterinary care. Make sure you find an avian veterinarian.

We ended up using wash cloths I bought for bird care. Thank you for making this. I gave her a big millet and an orange slice as a reward. Thankfully she's in my room away from all the action. A blood feather is a newly growing feather. They're natural. It's a hollow sheath over a growing feather to keep it sealed so it can grow. When one bursts it begins to bleed and it can be potentially life threatening. Do your research before commenting next time.

    • @christakimbrough615
      @christakimbrough615 5 лет назад +7

      I think it's because a lot of the bird forums surrounding parrots in general are moving towards using cayenne pepper to stop the bleeding and allow clotting to form where the feather broke off instead of having to pull the rest of the feather out. So I'm guessing there are a lot of people who have been informed that this method is outdated and unnecessary which isn't true at all there's just an alternative method that may or may not work.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 лет назад +41

      Even if the blood clots, it still needs pulling. It may bleed again and it bothers the bird by having a broken feather. It's best to pull to avoid it from bleeding again and let a new one in. The pepper is for pain and not for clotting.

    You video may have saved my parrot Arty last night! She fell from her perch in the night and even though she is fully flighted she landed hard enough to break a new primary growing in on her right wing. Having watched your video previously I didn't panic, and though I fumbled a bit I pulled out the blood feather with tweezers and she made it through the night.
    That said, anyone else who is reading this, don't skimp on the hemostats. Trying to use a pair of Revlon tweezers at 3am on a distraught bleeding bird is a nightmare come true. It took me three attempts to pull out the feather with those stupid things.

      i love hemostats.
      i have no bird, but they're great for fixing things, specially as i work as a car electrician, they're great to keep things in place.
      Yeah don't skimp on the hemostats.

    Owner: Alright I’m just going to spray you with some water.
    Bird: WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHO ARE YOU TALKING TO? *Mad birb reflex skillz*

      Possibly contact your local pet store and ask them if they can remove it, I'm sure they wouldn't say no

    This is very helpful information. I have 5 keets and a cockatiel. I am fairly new to keeping birds (9 months). My oldest bird just recently broke a feather on her head.

      Kat McGee I’d consider making a book called blood feather. It does sound magical.

      Kat McGee When I saw "Blood Feather" I thought oh well this looks interesting. And I was thinking that the bird or parrot just got cut or something stupid like that. I was so wrong.
