Why wouldn't the wires be nice and neat from factory? So simple to do and so much nicer , GREAT JOB!
I am probably the third owner, everything worked, just needed tidying up.
Although the PRR S1 was too big for the PPR system, it was the most exciting thing ever happened in American railroading history. Thank you for showing us your big engine!
I love how close the spacing is from the engine to tender on this one you got. Sets it apart from all the others just with that, let alone all the other detailing you've done. Great work, nice addition to you collection.
The previous owner put that on. It worked out nicely for my O99 curves. Don’t think I can run it any tighter.
I love the big S1 class locomotive. Especially with their dual drivers! Love the video Norm!
7:52 “i’m not trying to go off the deep end or anything”, might be a bit too late lol. Really interesting stuff though
I have since edited my TMCC speed plot report to include tabs for 128 speed steps. Couldn’t help myself! Maybe I’ll curve an EOB engine someday in all 3 modes.
Nice work Norm!! 3D printing has
really opened up a whole new range
of options for all of us Model Railroaders!!!!!
I love it - wish I would have got one sooner!
@@normstrains What 3D printer do you use? I would like to buy one and could use some help picking a good one.
@@Slideyslide a Creality Ender Pro 3. It's been great so far!
13 lbs, what a beast!
S1 is such a monster forget the Bigboy
It is bigger then a big boy
In my opinion: S-1 is the fastest steam locomotive in the world not mallard
Wow absolutely beautiful love it cheers KC Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺😎👍
BRILLIANT LAYOUT ALL MY FAVORITE LOCOS!!!!!!
Amazing engine Norm
Thanks Norm! Excellent video! Yes, red markers were used for standing equipment only.
Hopefully we can stay in touch, I'm in the process of building a building for my layout, 42' X 120' and will post the progress
Love it.. that engine is huge! Was cool to see it smoking. You don’t typically have the engines smoking. Very cool
I meant to set up a couple of smoke 💨 shots but ran out of time. It actually works ok, but is very thirsty for smoke fluid.
@@normstrains I bet it is. I have often wondered why you typically don’t have your engines smoking..
I've got the same awesome engine thanks for the education! Great video
Amazing how much better the wiring looks!
Norm - Great Video. I am so glad bought this one off me. It couldn't have a better home. Cheers!
Awesome engine - I remember Dick Maddox demoing at Wild Bill’s. I said this was out around 2001 but I think it was closer to 2002-2003. 🤔
The uniqueness of your modeling is in the weathering of the locomotive and rolling stock as well as structure and the scenery detail as a whole. I wish I had your eye for this level of detail. This is the work of a real artist. Model railroading is a new art form for sure. And then beyond this, your confidence in working with the electronics in these locomotives. - WOW! I am not an electronic minded person even though I have upgraded a few locomotives from conventional to ERR, doing the two magnets on a tender wheel for the prototypical 4-chuffs per revolution., So far, this has worked since the tender wheels were a proper circumference to the drive wheels. I was always afraid to do what you did with placing the magnets on the actual drivers (which is better any way you look at it). I would like to learn John Will's system where the motor weight is taped and the chuff is read electronically. Legacy as a whole is way better than TMCC but I'm with you, some of these early TMCC models had fantastic sounds, only needing enhancement such as 4-chuffs and maybe rule-17 lighting. Again, I really appreciate your work, just wish I could match at least some of it.
Looking forward to the weathering. As always, your knowledge of these locos is great. Nice work!
As always Norm another great video. I love the scale of that locomotive, it looks impressive.
Great addition.
Great video Norm!!👌 Just goes to show great deals are to be found and can still be updated. Thanks for sharing.👍😁
Awesome 😎
Brilliant! 👏😏
Hi there again Norm. Thanks once again for sharing your work here on YT in this case reworking and modifying the PRR S1. Having converted many 3R locos (all diesels) and quite a number of rolling stock to 2R over the last 10 years, I've been frustrated with the lack of information/data there is on-line regarding 3R electronics. While I now have a reasonable stash of 3R wheels & couplers as a result of these conversions, I also have quite a number of CctBds of which I have little or absolutely no idea of what they are/do. At least from this video I have been able to identify some of the boards and worked out what they do.
As most of our NZR locos are brass and white metal models "kits", the 3D printed parts such as the CCTBD mounts and cam followers you have produced has inspired me to pull out my 18 month old, as yet unused, 3D printer and start producing some bespoke mounting brackets, thanks once again for sharing your work.
What a beast of a locomotive, it sure can fly. Thanks for showing us.
Nice job. Really fast locomotive!
I'm a conventional runner so much of your electrical stuff is above my pay grade.....but never hurts to learn!! I own a 3rd Rail S-1. She is pretty simple with a QSI board in here. But I like her and is among my favorites. My father in law's brother was in charge of the PRR S-1 display at the 1939 World's Fair......so while a S-1 is kinda over the top......I had to own one with the faimly connection!!! Thanks
I would not mind getting the unskirted S1 that 3rd Rail made!
I aways enjoy the 3d prints just magically appearing.
Your work is so impressive. Thanks for the peek into your shop . Absolutely beautiful engine . Looks amazing on those long straightaways .
19:30 We've always called those twist-ties. Nowhere near the quality of Zipties but for stuff like holding larger wires together and opened bread bags.
No haha, they were just bits of wire. I’ve done worse, especially when I really wanted to get something running. Now I’m a little more patient.
What a great look at that S1. I’d also like to say your weathering skills are top notch and your layout is fantastic!
The way the it looks clean and unweathered running through lived in scenery definitely fits the vibe of s1
Excellent work Norm!
Excellent video and engine! I have the MTH Premier version in PS3. I'm thinking about looking for the newer Legacy version that came out recently. Glad you found one and picked it up. It's a massive steam engine.
Excellent engine for your collection, good topic on going over a pre bought model/cleaning also. Also love how you add to you collect of Pennsy engines of the time era. I pretty much do the same as for as engine collections that I model. Looking forward to up-and-coming video's
Looks awesome 😎👍
Beautiful Train
Train Engine Beautiful
Very Glamorous Engine
I have one of these and have a stock draw bar but, the guy before ran it on to tight of cures and bend the draw bar all up and it’s got ir tether problems too seems to be kinda common for these
Now you own the longest engine ever, coupler to coupler. No engine could match the S1 for length
Not bad Norm! I wish I had an S1.
Great videos Norm We can learn a lot. Im Steve from the club
What up Steve!
Every video a master class 😔👏🏻
GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish my layout looked as realistic as yours norm
Norm, this is funny, iam watching this while iam Running Lionel Nation on the DVD, your in both places.lol. nice engine.
It's got a big motor.
Cleanest of the fleet lol
Norm that baby cost more then my car man 😳🤣
Love it tho 👍
Hi Norm! Excellent engine!! Are you going to do a full video of the S1 being weather or are they going to be separate videos?
I did not film the weathering on this one! This was supposed to be a quick project and vid, but as usual I wandered down into a couple rabbit holes. I am hoping to find a classier passenger set for it at York.

@@normstrains b😢 hola cariño: 66🎉 😅
Norm is the Steve MRE of model trains.
Hey Norm
I have the same engine, so I’d be interested in the chuff fix.
Also look for a video on the buildings and sidewalks I’ve been printing on my channel. If you are looking for a good large format printer (400x400x400), look at eBay, they have returned Anycubic Chiron for $219 with free shipping. They need a little love but work very well. I have 2 now, I also got a CR10 S5 on the way, a massive 500x500x500.
I really want a printer with finer resolution. When I made those frames for the ash pan vents, it took a couple tries to get the horizontal strip to stand out clean. Right now, the Ender is working great for my purposes.
@@normstrains Then you want a resin printer. I printed out a PRR doghouse for my N3s. It’s a 3rd rail N1 s with a H class tender I got for like $350. Now that I have a 3rd rail N1s that’s correct, I’m making my own sub class. I wish I could find a N2sa though…..
@@patstrains7185 What printer would you recommend for somebody who wants to make detailed buildings and parts for model railroading?
@@Slideyslide The SLA or liquid resin has the most detail, but you are limited by print size and post processing is a pain. Also messy.
A good FDM (filament) will give you larger print volume and less messy, but you will see layer lines. Not a big deal though and if you paint them, using a filler primer will do a good job too.
Love the results! I wish Lionel would go back to a warm light for there headlight. Not a fan of the modern “white” leds.
bEAUTIFUL ENGINE!
Nice engine Norm. Who’d say makes the best O scale figures? I’d say Woodland Scenics.
Hi Norm, any chance you will post a vid of how you paint these prepainted models, do you ever dabble in 2-rail O? any projects? pretty much everything you've done here is so over the top of anything I've seen, your work is beautiful and certainly sets the bar in so many areas.
Thanks for the kind words Kevin. I've covered a bit of locomotive weathering in some of my vids. Never really messed around with 2 rail O scale.
Mall gaadi ka enjan hai very nice
Great job once again Norm! If you don’t mind me asking do you have a file for the 3D printed chuff switch? I would like to upgrade my 4-8-2’s two chuff to a four chuff but I’m not sure of the dimensions. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Awesome video! You make the insides make sense to me. Can you do a chuff cam for a JLC UP 4-12-2 to do 6 chuffs?
I don’t see why not. I think it doesn’t trigger evenly from what I’ve heard. Might be better to trigger with my magnetic chuff cam like I used in my Q2 project. I just used the full version in my M1b: ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/topic/3d-printed-chuff-magnet-cam-my-first-foray-into-3d-printing?reply=161208612986232920#161208612986232920
Question. Are these sound upgrades fair simple to do? I have two Williams brass engines I’d like to do something similar to.
I would recommend looking into Electric RR products if you want to go with TMCC. Lionel just stopped selling most of their OEM TMCC parts just a couple weeks ago.
Ok, serious question: How in the world does your equipment looks so proportional? Do you do conversion kits? Every time I look up O scale trains, they look way out of proportions unless I look at the layouts from the UK or Europe
I only run scale equipment if that’s what you mean. I still have to modify some of it for proper ride height and closer coupling on occasion.
@@normstrains I know this sounds a silly question, but which companies do the scale equipment?
@@Deritsuku2010 they all do really. You just have to be selective. Many decent scale models have been built in 3 rail in the past 20 years.
Question norm, does the diameter/ radius for the chuff cam vary by locomotive? Or does it not matter? Also, where might I be able to find a chuff cam to upgrade chuffs? Thingaverse?
The most important thing about the cam size is that it has to be large enough diagonally to actuate the microswitch and also fit inside the space allocated for it in the frame. I can share the simple design on Tinkercad if you want to check it out. Maybe I should get a Thingiverse account. 🤔 The Tinkercad sharing is nice if you want to tweak the design if you have your own printer.
@@normstrains That would be cool. I’m looking at a Union Pacific y-3 and I was told it has a chuff cam with switch. Im not exactly sure how wide it is, but assuming it’s too wide latitudinally, I might just be able to file it down just a bit, to fit the frames edges. Also where might I find the design on tinkercad
@@skiiipawbs try this: www.tinkercad.com/things/0EgesCKY6m6
@@normstrains thanks so much! Do you think 00-80 screws would work?
@@skiiipawbs yes, or 1.4mm. Also could be CAed together
What was your method for the weathering? Dry brushing? Airbrush?
A little bit of both - I tried to do a mild job on this one. There are a few photos of the real thing showing a respectable coat of grime.
Oh...by the way, that small scope is badass!! I've got an old dual trace scope I usually use, but it's a big bulky rascal! Kinda a pain to use
Where'd you get that one? Wouldn't mind having one.
eBay, usually sold under different names. I would love a bench scope but this one has been ok, just heed my warning about the input voltage!
Oh yeah! I Heard that on the input voltage ⚡
Though being 13% more powerful than big boy, would 6100 beat 4014 in a tug of war?
It has a whistle on top?
No just a group of pop valves.
Love all your videos. I was a three rail o scale hobbyist. I have a reading rs3 weaver engine for sale if your interested. I was thinking for $125
