Gorgeous engine and layout! I grew up in Williamson, West Virginia, the Y class's last stand, where my dad worked as a yard breakman. The N&W's coal mine for the fuel, was across the river in Kentucky and the coal was carried by cable buckets directly to the N&W engine terminal. Our neighbor worked in that mine.
Nice Y6b, dude! Looks great! I have 2 Y6b's. They are great engines. Not just with N&W coal hoppers do they look at home, I've had mine pull WM, B&O and Pennsy hoppers! They look awesome with a coal drag and general frieghts. Y6b's were the ultimate development of the 2-8-8-2 design when N&W equipped them with roller bearings on all axles, holding off dieselization on the N&W until the mid fifties when "the writing was on the wall" for steam. The last one dropped its fires in 1961!
Beautiful model for being 3 rail. Alot of the stuff ive seen is very toyish looking. Nice work. The low shots where you can't see the middle rail, one would never know this is 3 rails. Absolutely fantastic work
Amazing work! It’s so fascinating to see you work on these engines! But I would love to see a Weaver Milwaukee F7 Baltic (Hudson) run on your layout! It is my favorite Hudson type or maybe the rare 3rd Rail Deskirted S1 Duplex to run along side your Standard Skirted Lionel one!
Norm, Another great video. I have always been a HO scale guy back in the day and was a fan of Western roads, having modelled the Union Pacific in a 1990-91 era, but I love model railroads that are completely tied together from locomotives, rolling stock, weathering, scenery to period correct vehicles and buildings, and you have masterfully captured that. I mean I cringe when I see layouts where a steam locomotive passes a Walmart store, or Pennsy Centipede passes a grade crossing and a brand new Corvette is waiting there, or a couple of SD-70ACe diesel drag a train by and the first car is a 40 wooden cattle car! Thanks for sharing your masterpiece!
THANKS for posting this, Norm. I loved your photos on the OGR forum about this. As a fan of N&W articulateds, I think you did a great job with this, it looks great!
What a awesome engine for sure, love the work you’ve done to it. Great work on the 3d printed piece for it. Awesome video and great action of this engine in action.
Hi mate, great video again. regarding the damaged/missing rivets at the tender I recommend the 3D rivet decals from Archer fine transfers! they have a variety of sizes including O scale. Are very easy to use, you can paint over them and looks phenomenal! I use in some of my projects with great results. give a try next time.... take care!
@@LucasTheDookis finally got to try this with Cura and I seem to have better tires! No bumps! I still have to do one at a time but they are like 5 minute prints. Thanks again!
@@normstrains glad to be of assistance. If you start noticing small bumps over vase mode prints occasionally you may need to turn off power off recovery mode on the printer. Sometimes the geometry gets too complex for vase mode files to easily convert to gcode
Love the video, goes to show, if you're willing to put in a little restoration work, you can get some great deals. PS I love the weathered beat up look, very realistic.
Looks real nice. That 3D printer looks like a valuable tool. I’m guessing those rivets got worn off from the tender always rubbing something on the layout like a tunnel portal or something on that order. Your efforts paid off on this locomotive. Thanks for sharing.
Nice locomotive Norm! Are the kadee mounts standard or different for each locomotive? Also, would love another demo of your weathering of a locomotive.
Another fantastic beastie from the past - any preserved, or is it just the 'halo products' - Hudson, Big Boy, 'J-Class' etc ...? We've almost got a little too carried away here in UK - so many of the old steam locomotives preserved, admittedly in various conditions and availabilities. Keep these videos coming - they're great to see. Al.
If you don't have 3D printing access, Bull Frog Snot is a definite go-to. I've used it on my WM J1 Potomac as a "quick fix" for drivers slipping off the track on the curve coming out of my cut. My Rivarossi Allegheny lost theirs, so they still have Bull Frog Snot tires on it.
Norm. All I can say if fantastic. You are meticulous. Keep the videos coming, Very informative for us mere mortals!
Looks amazing!!

I have a batch of B&O and C&O 50 tonners working now, they are in the process of getting Kadees tonight.
Love that N&W steam Norm!! Now
you'll have to set up some lights
and get a O. Winston Link photo!!
That would be very neat!
Another great video norm! Wish you were still local. I need some more train guys in my area.
Fantastic detail
Congrats on the acquisition and great job rehabbing her. I love the Y6B.
OUTSTANDING 🇺🇸
Nice locomotive! You know your stuff!
Thank you I enjoyed your videos

Norm train is one of my favorite video of all time love it ❤
Norm. You have excellent taste in locomotives.
another great addition to the fleet!
My favorite locomotive! I want one so bad!
Your layout is beautiful! I love the trackwork, the ballast, the colors. I looks very well done! The Y6B looks and sounds awesome!

Awesome Y Class Norm! 🎉
A y6b is one engine I wished they’d make in S gauge. Awesome video!

Looks great, sounds fantastic!
Norm,
You found another great locomotive and made it superb!
Congratulations.
The shot at 23:13 was the best. Your layout suits all East Coast steam locomotives. Great work Norm
Needing to watch this channel is a requirement most days.
Norm, that locomotive is gorgeous, and I love your level of weathering! Thanks for sharing this vid!
beautiful locomotive
Awesome work as always!! Great Engine to get the Norm touch for that realism. Keep up the good work and looking forward to more videos.
25:16 I'm assuming that Big Six must be there for foreshadowing reasons. 🤔
Yes I hope to get on it soon! I am prepping a batch of hoppers for it to pull right now.
Absolutely beautiful engine! the Y series are my favorite articulateds & this one is nothing short of stunning!
Looks fantastic! Nice work . Always most enjoyable watching Your videos so thank You !
Came out beautiful as always! Super jealous. Would love a Y6b!
Norm, your videos are NEVER to long , wish they were longer, another informative and awesome video.
Always enjoy when your videos come out. Your work and attention to detail is amazing. See you on the next one.
Always great to see your trains run!!!!!! THX

Try printing the tires in vase mode, you'll avoid that bump you were talking about @18:50.
I will have to try that, thanks for the tip! I am running the Creality slicer and I think it might have an option to spiralize the outer layer. 🤔
BTW, I downloaded Cura and it looks like it can spiralize. The Creality slicer didn’t have the option. Thanks again!
Happy to help

Great video as always and beautiful steamer!
Great job on a cool locomotive. Thanks for showing us.
The Y6b looks just as natural on your layout as the Pennsy engines do!
What a beauty......
Norm do you usually buy preowned locomotives and which brand do you prefer? Lionel, 3rd Rail, or MTH?
Badass engine bro! 😎👍

Nice what type of TPU did you use. I would like to try printing some traction tires for an experiment.
I used Novamaker 95A durometer

When you replace traction tires have you ever tried Bull Frog Snot?
If you don't have 3D printing access, Bull Frog Snot is a definite go-to. I've used it on my WM J1 Potomac as a "quick fix" for drivers slipping off the track on the curve coming out of my cut. My Rivarossi Allegheny lost theirs, so they still have Bull Frog Snot tires on it.
I was under the impression it was applied to a plain driver. Not sure you can fill a traction tire slot.
@@normstrains It filled the slot nicely on my Allegheny.
Have you ever considered using the Atlas (I believe they are from Atlas) scale-sized couplers which are electromagnetic?
Norm did you know Tony Lash’s grandfather was an engineer of a Y6b? Tony said his grandfather would let him ride in the cab as a boy.
Hi Norm, would you be interested in making me some parts?
3D print your own hoppers!
Maybe someday. I did manage to find a few N&W ones lately!
Ro-scale central Y6
Beautiful locomotive. I just cannot get into the three rail track, takes something away from the realism.
