The problem with Mirage's parkour is that it has no smooth transition in between different animations. They seem rather stiff to the point where each animation follows an independent "start" "stop" segment and gives some sort of heavy weight feeling to the movement.
Unity however, has completely smooth transitions between animations which makes them well blended together.

As someone who loves the Assassin's Creed series and often watches parkour videos, I actually had the opposite impression.
While Unity had a large quantity of high-quality animations, there were some instances where the blending felt insufficient.
On the other hand, Mirage had fewer animations, but they seemed to be blended very well.
I remember that Syndicate managed to skillfully blend and improve the choppy and incomplete animations from Unity.

The main thing I see here as the key difference is that Mirage doesn’t have wall run and side eject like Unity, which fundamentally chances how parkour became faster, fluid and flashy. It even affects the design of the environment, like where Ubisoft no longer have to rely on reused staircase-style boxes to create the initial vertical climb on many areas of the map, allowing more room for unique placement objects.
EDIT: I am so confuse as to why some people are saying Unity has no side eject. Has no one watched Leo K [Rogue] channel? Side hop is basically a different way of saying side eject.

The idea of landing on a rope like it’s a solid platform needs to finally be phased out in future next (now current) gen releases. Giving objects (other than the swinging lanterns, rope lifts, and now vaulting poles) reactive physics would go such a long way in grounding the movement/parkour.
I loved seeing the tree branches wabble as Connor moved across them in AC3. It was a small touch that gave the world so much more life and charm.
Also, the slow bulky free running and parkour in Mirage is disappointing to say the least, but it’s not surprising since Ubisoft is reusing the terrible bulky gameplay system from Origins-Valhalla. I’m hoping AC Red and AC Hexe will deliver a better more satisfying gameplay experience (hopefully even more traditional than Mirage if it sells well)… but unfortunately I think Ubisoft is still satisfied with their boring RPG system..

@@Bruce_Black realistically these devs can’t and instead designed the world to work best with the system they had. If they were given more time, resources and devs they could’ve, but Ubisoft tasked one of their smallest dev teams with creating a game as large as Unity. The best they could do now this close to release is possible change/alter some of Eivor’s animations to fit Basim better and make the transition between animations smoother. This footage honestly could be months old though as the recent “return to the roots” video they released showed Basim as faster although he was still using Eivor’s animations. I’m guessing they are tweaking the speed so that it’s perfect for the environment and you can’t get across the map too fast or too slowly. They can tweak the animations like for honor does with its reused animations to better fit Basim and the faster movement but they only have like 3 months left.

People have to remember that AC Mirage is more of an afterthought than a fully planned mainline entry to the series. The parkour system in Unity allowed for more player expression with back and side ejects and parkour up and down inputs. While Mirage seems to have constructed better environmental routes and pathing, its system lacks the input to be more expressive; quite simply, Mirage's parkour is "easy to learn and easy to master," as the creative director said, because you have less control.
Control and expression are what make parkour fun and engaging, and while Unity had its fair share of issues with its parkour (mainly the inconsistencies in when Arno could perform certain ejects or jump certain distances) I prefer its parkour over any other entry since its release.

Unity was the last AC game that felt like an AC game. It also has the best graphics out of all the games in the series. I know Ubisoft is not talented or creative anymore like they used to be so I don't expect Mirage or any upcoming AC game to be on the same level as the original games (The first 4 or 5 games). They could at least try match Unity's quality.

The reason of Mirage's parkour fluidity is likely due to the fast animations. at 0:50 you can see Basim climbing the fence and jumping to the pole in one swift move. where in previous games the player would usually climb slower and have a small pause when he reaches the top. less realistic but it looks good so i dont mind.

I recently - finally - played through Assassin’s Creed II. While I do not feel it holds up very well, one thing was for certain - the parkour has immense situational depth (even more so than Unity). You don’t exactly have a deep move set. The five main parkour moves you can perform are side eject, back eject, catch ledge, wall run up, and climb leap. However, pending the design of the buildings and structures, you have immense depth.
Let’s take a typical crate and barrel staircase in AC2. If you run of up the staircase and jump on a wall post, there are generally more posts after it that takes you towards a roof. However, if you wall run up the post your on, you can the run up with a side eject or back eject, or perform a climb leap to get to the roof faster.
Unity had situational depth regarding side ejects. There’s no need for a climb leap because Arno will do it automatically. Side ejects are mapped and inconsistent. Back ejects are also mapped. Unfortunately, the amount of movement freedom that the Altair, Ezio, and even Kenway games provided is still unmatched in the series, and there was a definite sense of regression with Unity in my opinion.
Mirage looks like Valhalla. Mirage was built using Valhalla’s systems. The parkour in Mirage will be nothing more than a slightly improved version of Origins - Valhalla’s parkour.
I would much prefer an updated version of the Altair and Ezio parkour systems in comparison to just Unity. Unity is a little too flashy, and kind of breaks the tenets of the creed on a lore level. The man is flinging himself around like an acrobat.
Personal preferences I guess, but I find far more enjoyability from the old game’s consistent systems than anything after Rogue.

I do love AC Unity and I'm halfway through in my progress but i find it really annoying when Arno doesn't parkour the way you want it too. Whenever it's to escape the area after a mission and there's a chase, i really forgot the controls and i end up spamming the keyboard lol. Anyway, as what I see, Mirage puts a Valhalla vibe. Basim's movement, the horn, and also you hear him talking time to time which i thought a more realistic approach to certain areas

People lets not forgett that mirage has a footage which is given by the devs before release. On the other hand unity is a final product.
Knowing the behavior of ubisoft I would not be suprised if we are dealing with boosted pre rendered footage for mirage instead of an actual gameplay, which would answer why mirage looks so gameplay wise unnaturally fluent.
I am 100% sure that it happened with mirage. Because all movement is too perfect.
What really makes unity a bit unnatural is the way the player giving inputs. Sometimes it generates a small pause in the movement, sometimes the player makes unintended moves, and quiet of times the player push the buttons "too" rapidly and hence the Arno starts of a new animation even before visually the previous one being finished, ruining the realistic look.
What happens with the mirage is that the character doing every input at the right time. Loot to late to make a small pause, nor being to early to interupt the animations being finishing. Which is in my opinion not to possible with actual human players, but rather with a pree rendered footage.

Like other than the descent button and the wall grabbing thing, it looks the same to me. Unpopular opinion, but while Unity shone with its varied parkour animations, I felt like Arno was someone floaty in his movements. This makes it all a little bit unrealistic because moving from point A to point B should have some weight to it and gravity. Hence, if Mirage could incorporate the animations and improve upon it, I think it can have so much potential.

I think that perhaps what gives AC Unity its fluidity in parkour (besides transitions from one animation to another) is that it takes its time in the air in the jumpsUnlike AC Mirage who seems to barely reach the top of her jump, she lands at a fixed speed instead of landing at an increasing speed. Let them fix that and they will have a large part of the parkour fixed, and it is that in reality there are several points. Another would be that when he jumps from one beam to another, it should be with the same speed as when one would cross a frozen river and the ice is breaking, as if the foot barely touches the beam, you jump.
