I absolutely love this watch for everything it can do. From a distance and having never tried it on, I dreamed of getting this watch for a long time. So with lockdown I decided to take the opportunity to save and sell a good number of things to be able to afford it. In the meantime, I watched every single review (well nearly!) on youtube and I even put an order in for one with an Un-AD despite having never seen it - but it was cancelled.
When I had enough I took myself along to my AD to try it on. They say don't meet your hero's and this was mine. I don't know if I over-hyped it in my head, but it did nothing for me. I still appreciate all of the mechanical prowess and that is what attracted me to it, but in person, when it's on your wrist, it just becomes a mass of parts and it left me feeling cold, despite being a perfect fit. I know there will be plenty of people that love this, so don't let me put you off, but it is definitely one to try on in person. This will always be the one that got away and I won't know if I made the right choice or not.

The movement in the Defy is haute horology at its absolute finest. What makes the Daytona so appealing is it's resale value throughout the yrs. If I had a choice however, i'll have this over the Daytona anytime! Loved the video, you gave this Zenith the justice it truly deserves.

  • @rfueiodafiodas

When I first started my watch journey, the Daytona was my goal. A few months later, I saw the Zenith Defy El Primero 21 (Exact one in this video) at a dealer and fell it love. It fit my large wrist perfectly, I could watch the movement for ages, and the shine on the case and bracelet reflected every little ray of light it could pick up. I'm just struggling with the current price tag, but it will be mine some day!

I'm not big on both chronographs and skeleton watches, but this movement is very impressive and would be a shame to hide. However it's too big in both diameter and thickness for my liking. I love this watch. Having lived with it for a little over a year I can tell you it still excites me every time I wear it. I sometimes think they could have done a better job designing the blue parts of the skeletonized dial on the right. I feel it needs more separation between the parts. But I still love it. I once tried to measure something in fractions of a second but I remembered that I read somewhere it takes your brain a 10th of second to react to something .. so it is a bit fast for our brains I guess

Normally, I'm not a huge fan of skeleton watches--not because I don't like seeing the movement ( just the opposite, actually--I definitely prefer display casebacks), but because they can be hard to read. This one, though, is awesome, and has nice hands and markers that stand out. Really digging this design. This one and the Oris Propilot X (which I was lucky enough to see and try on recently) are my favorite skeleton designs out there.

Just one correction Jenny, the first automatic chrono, the Chronomatic, was announced in January 1969 (not in 1968) and released to the market in April, and this was not built from scratch as it used the Intramatic as a basis for timekeeping and a modular chronograph from Dubois Depraz. The first fully integrated automatic chronograph was the Seiko 6139 released to market in May 1969, a full 5 months before Zenith

I saw this watch in person at the boutique and it is not that huge as one might imagine. Nevertheless, I believe it makes not much sense not to release a smaller versions with bearable 42mm so wider audience can actually. At this moment, this Zenith Defy 21 model is limited to the customers which larger wrists. Finally, thickness of 14mm could be yet another showstopper where the watch becomes simply too uncomfortable to wear.

usually not a fan of skeleton dials - but this one I LOVE, as for its use?? I'd use it to soothe my engineering soul, daily... from a software engineers perspective, I like the fact that there is no software / electronics involved - there's a purity to mechanical watches that will keep them around for a long long time....

    Hi Jenni
Really love the channel and enjoy the content and your presentation style. You wanted ideas. Watch reviewers see to consistently miss out some really interesting brands and cover rolex too much considering we all know the brand very well. How about IWC, Blancpain and Vacheron. Would love to see something from you covering these brands. Keep up good work.

Pointless complication, I guess, but amazing nonetheless - I'm not mad about skeleton dials, usually, but the blue and red with the titanium works well on the Defy 21 - I like it (Agree about the images, stunning work!)

Wow that’s a fast secondary movement.

Zenith get very little love out there and the fact their used prices drop makes them a great bargain on the secondary market. I nearly picked up an El Primero that sold for 7.5K only five years ago and haggled them down to 3.7K. Unfortunately it was the smiley face RDM version and once seen I couldn’t get past that. Still, with the exhibition case back the ElP movement looks incredible. This particular model is a lot of watch for the money. The best part being they are readily available straight out of the AD and you can get a good discount price new. Go Zenith!
