  • The problem with using analogies to explain the Holy Trinity is that you always end up confessing some ancient heresy.

Jesus also said, “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist” Matthew 11:11
Jesus is clearly greater than John the Baptist, or was Jesus claiming John was greater? Or is Jesus not "born of women"?

So it's a incoherent mess that you just have to blindly believe in despite the fact that it's nature violates the law of identity and conventional logic is that objects that violate the law of identity do not exist, since there is no entity that is not itself. 2+2 must equal 5.

@@gregorymckenna2727 by your logic simple quantum mechanics is an incoherent mess because it violates what we perceive to be simple logic tests. I mean heisenberg uncertainty in many ways doesn't agree with conventional logic but you don't see me running up to Niels bohr screaming at him to denounce quantum theory as heresy. The rules of logic apply to what our simple human ape brains are able to conceive of the world around us and largely have to do with their utility in everyday life. It isn't generally advantageous for someone to believe in Heisenberg uncertainty because it doesn't help your everyday life to believe that something can exist in two separate locations at the same time so for most of human history that concept would have been regarded as illogical. Similarly, it does not help our everyday lives to understand how one thing can also simultaneously be three distinct and independent things so simply we don't, and because it has no utility (and may in fact be disadvantageous to understand it because it would break many of the other logical laws that you need to have to orient yourself in the world and function in it) we regard the concept as illogical. Tl;dr: our tiny ape brains are limited to that which we can perceive and what we can make sense of is limited to what we can utilize for our own advantage, so because of that inherent limitation on human thought and perception it's impossible for us to understand the trinity, like how it's impossible for a human to imagine a space with 4 distinct dimensions simultaneously and to grasp the concept, we have to collapse the 4d space into 3d space even though a computer does not have to do this.

@@johnmcauliffe8824 @John McAuliffe " by your logic simple quantum mechanics is an incoherent mess because it violates what we perceive to be simple logic tests."
No? While quantum physics may seem weird and counterintuitive, it has ultimately found to be in compliance with classical logical. QM does shake up the linguistic choices we use when using logic to describe reality around us. For example, it forces us to completely rethink the concept of an object being "at a position in space." QM does not say that an object can be in two places at the same time in the way you or I might think of it.
The idea that quantum mechanics fundamentally challenges the rules of logic was popular for a while, but has fallen out of favor. Even the original proponents of "Quantum logic" moved away from their position in later years.
"I mean heisenberg uncertainty in many ways doesn't agree with conventional logic but you don't see me running up to Niels bohr screaming at him to denounce quantum theory as heresy."
Which would be weird, not just because Niels Bohr is dead or that to apply concepts like heresy to scientific principles is nuts, but because there is nothing illogical about not being able to know the location and momentum of a particle to the same degree of accuracy.
"It isn't generally advantageous for someone to believe in Heisenberg uncertainty because it doesn't help your everyday life to believe that something can exist in two separate locations at the same time so for most of human history that concept would have been regarded as illogical."
Ah, so you don't actually know what the uncertainty principle actually is. It is about the accuracy of knowledge of two features of an item (location and momentum), not about the items ACTUAL location or momentum. You have it confused with quantum superposition, and more specifically the popular misinterpretation of quantum superposition. The popular misinterpretation of superposition that it is about the same object being in two places may be peddled by many laymen books, but it is not what it actually says.
And while at first-glance, quantum superposition (i.e something being in more than one base state at the same time) might seem like a challenge to the rules of logic, by invalidating the law of non-contradiction, this is not the case. An electron in a superposition of spin |+> and spin |-> might seem like a contradiction, but it can simply be treated as being in a distinct third state of being "either |+> or |->".
Although talking about it that way, I wonder if one could apply a similar idea to the Trinity somehow. Then again, positing that the Trinity is a relation between multiple versions of the same object sounds a bit like Modalism too me. I'll have to consult with some people.

Here's a transcript if anyone needs it:
Donall and Conall with St. Patrick
    Discussing the Trinity
Donall: OK, Patrick. Tell us a bit more about this Trinity thing.
    Conall: Yea, Patrick. Tell us.
Donall: But remember that we’re simple people without your fancy education and books and learnin’ and we’re hearin’ about all of this for the first time. So, try to keep it simple. OK, Patrick?
    Connal: Yeah, real simple, Patrick.
St. Patrick: Sure. There are, uhh, three persons of the Trinity - the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Yet, there is only one God.
Donall: Don’t get what you’re sayin’ here, Patrick.
Conall: Not pickin’ up what you’re layin’ down here, Patrick.
Donall: Could you use an analogy, Patrick?
St. Patrick: Sure, uhh, Trinity is like, uhh, water and how you can find water in three different forms - liquid, and ice, and and vapor.
    Donall: That’s modalism, Patrick!
    St. Patrick: What?
Donall: Modalism - An ancient heresy confessed by a teacher such as Novatus and Sabellius which espouses that God is not three distinct persons but that he merely reveals himself in three different forms. This heresy was clearly condemned in Canon 1 at the First Council of Constantinople in 381 AD and those who confess it cannot rightly be considered a part of the church catholic. Come on, Patrick!
Conoll: Yeah, get it together, Patrick!
St. Patrick: OK, uhh, then the Trinity is like, uhh, the sun in the sky where you have the star, and the light, and the heat.
    Donall: Oh, Patrick.
    Conall: Come on, Patrick.
    Donall: That’s Arianism, Patrick.
    St. Patrick: Arianism?
Donall: Yes, Arianism, Patrick. A theology which states that Christ and the Holy Spirit are creations of the Father and not one in nature with Him. Exactly like how heat and light are not the star itself but are merely creations of the star. That’s a bad analogy, Patrick!
    Conall: You’re the worst, Patrick!
St. Patrick: Alright, sorry. The Trinity is like this three-leaf clover here…
Donall: I’m gonna stop you right there, Patrick.
Conall: Yeah, hold your horses, Patrick.
Donall: You’re about to confess partialism.
    St. Patrick: Partialism?
Donall: Yes, partialism. A heresy which asserts that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not distinct persons of the Godhead but are different parts of God, each composing 1/3 of the divine.
St. Patrick: And who confesses the heresy of partialism?
Donall: The first season of the cartoon program Voltron where five robot lion-cars merge together to form one giant robot samurai. Obviously!
St. Patrick: I’ve never heard of Voltron.
Donall: Of course you haven’t. It’s not gonna exist for another 1500 years now, Patrick.
Conall: Yeah, get with the program, Patrick.
    Donall: I mean, really, Patrick.
Conall: I’m gonna stab you in the face, Patrick.
Donall: OK. That was probably a bit much.
St. Patrick: Alright. I’ll try again. Uhh, the Trinity is like how the same man can be a husband, and a father, and an employer.
    Donall: Modalism again!
St. Patrick: Alright, then it’s like the three layers of an atom…
    Donall: Partialism revisited.
St. Patrick: Fine! The Trinity is a mystery which cannot be comprehended by human reason but is understood only through faith and is best confessed in the words of the Athanasian Creed, which states that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in unity, neither confusing the Persons nor dividing the substance, that we are compelled by the Christian truth to confess that each distinct Person is God and Lord, and that the deity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is one, equal in glory, coequal in majesty.
Donall: Well, why didn’t you just say that, Patrick?
Conall: Yeah, quit beatin’ around the bush, Patrick. Now let’s all put on some giant green foam hats, get riotously drunk, and vomit in the Chicago River to celebrate our conversion.
St. Patrick: So, what do you guys do for a living?
Donall: Well, we come from a long line of snake farmers, Patrick, but truth be told business has been real bad lately.

I use this clip all the time... in Sunday School theology lessons and casual witnessing. It's brilliant!! One caution - analogies are not inherently bad. Jesus Himself uses the "imperfect" analogy of Father and Son to describe 2/3 of the trinity. You just have to know how far scripture allows you to press the analogy and stop one step before it falls apart.

@@mitchellc4 That's Adoptionism Patrick. Adoptionism was declared heresy at the end of the 3rd century and was rejected by the Synods of Antioch and the First Council of Nicaea, which defined the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity and identified the man Jesus with the eternally begotten Son or Word of God in the Nicene Creed. The belief was also declared heretical by Pope Victor I. Adoptionism denies the eternal pre-existence of Christ, which contradicts John 1 : 1-16, John 10 : 31-38, and yes even John 17 : 21. Jesus never directly said I am God, because He didn't need to. Just as God told Moses "I AM that I AM," Jesus told the Pharisee's in John 8 : 56-59, "before Abraham was, I AM." If someone wants the translation to Spanish:
Obviamente.
    - Nunca he oído hablar de Voltron

While I do not deny He was man while on Earth, the wonder is that He was still equally God. Matthew 1:23 captures this as His name is Immanuel, "God with us". However, this was not just an isolated verse twisting as Jesus Himself affirms that He is God when He answers a group of inquisitive Jews, "I tell you the truth, before Abraham was born, I am!" (John 8:58). the Jews correctly understood His claim to Deity as they picked up stones to stone Him. After all, what Jew would not understand the words spoken to Moses from the burning brush "I am Who I am" (Ex.3:14) being only applicable to God Himself. As for the Holy Spirit being God the words of our Saviour clarifies and affirms this in Mark 3:29, "But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, he is guilty of an eternal sin". This is affirmed many times in the epistles in the Trinitarian references (1 Peter 2 being a personal favorite). I love this cartoon so helpful for my preparation for Trinity Sunday. I DARE NOT TO use analogies best to explain the doctrine not the Trinity.

I remember my youth pastor showing us this video a while ago. A friend of mine shared the most recent Donall & Conall video with me today and I have found my long-lost Irish Lutherans.

Justin Martar used the Sun analogy. This was very cleaver and well argued. May God forgive our best attempts to explain an utter mystery.

At the right pressure H2O can form ice, water and vapor simultaneously. So it doesn't have to be modal. The same substance (H2O) can be experienced in three forms. All analogies break down, or they wouldn't be analogy, they would be the thing itself. So I don't mind if analogies are inadequate. We shouldn't judge them on what part breaks down, but what part of them reveals or explains biblically consistent truth.
Even words are metaphorical by nature, because they are representational of a thing and not the thing itself. But words are a great way to communicate truth, even with the limitations of vocabulary, translation, comprehension and more.

Keep it simple we're illiterate 5th century Irish peasants without books or faaaaancy education. We just happen to be experts on Church history and Systematic theology

Well, I understood the Shamrock analogy. I'm not saying I believed it, but I understood it. What was Patrick supposed to do? Find some plant that is 3 different plants but is also only one plant? If these are "bad analogies," then give an example of what a good analogy would have been.

      There isn’t a good analogy

There is no good analogy because the concept is fundamentally incoherent, and thus intrinsically wrong in and of itself.
