I grew up in the same town as he did. Me and my Grandfather used to go to every football and basketball game, so I watched his entire HS performances. He was an all time great. I was only 10 when he went off in that SB, but I'll always remember how proud I was seeing someone from a little town of 20k people in the spotlight. It made me sad to see how he flamed out after that game.
Went from getting sick at the thought of being a starter to the point they pretended he'd be the backup so he wouldnt have time to get nervous before the game, to spinning a football on I think Letterman? Demanded a huge contract after that game and it seemed to spiral from there. The story was cool but lets be real, those holes were massive. I'm not saying just anyone could've done what he done, but I think many non-starting NFL RB's would've loved to have been in that scenario.
I was thinking about that and Travis Fulgham with the 150+ yards and a td in that game, wondering if his stretch of 400+ yards and 4+ tds in 4 games was a fluke or not.
Matt Flynn was exactly what you needed from a backup QB and was an awesome guy. Crazy that all of these men trained their entire lives to only get one or two opportunities before being injured or benched, I hope all are doing well.
Chris Matthews Torched the Pats defense that game in 2014 until Kyle Arrington got benched. Brandon Browner was able to neutralize him, which is why he wasn't effective much in the 4th quarter. Also, that Jonas Gray game is also remembered for what Gronk did by tackling Sergio Brown out of the club.
Matt Flynn also came back to GB in '13 and brought us back from 27-3 in Dallas to win and keep us in the playoff chase, and then Rodgers came back for the finale to beat the Bears in the 4th-and-8 game. So I'd call Flynn a 2-hit wonder!

Also, the coaching staff picking Johnson over Doug Flutie to start the 1999 Wild Card was a stupid move to try and justify the contract. As much as any one hit wonder, his showcased a front office that made a mistake (both the contract and attempting to justify it).
@@fortynights1513 The weirdest thing is I remember reporters in camp noting how uncomfortable he seemed to be in the starter role as The Guy for the Buffalo franchise.
Larry Brown is unique because he didn't actually have to do much of anything in that Super Bowl. The Steelers QB threw the ball directly to him both times. All he had to do was catch the ball as if he was playing toss in the park as a kid. It's not as though he made spectacular reads on the QB or made great breaks on the passes.
That's pretty insane to hear that Tyree never caught another pass in the NFL after SB42. That memory of the helmet catch will forever be etched in my mind and is one of the first SB's I remember all the details of.
Those Washington counter treys with Timmy Smith were things of beauty! Watching those pulling linemen cross the field in front of Timmy was something else. I miss those days of running backs.
David Tyree should've been number 1, I don't care if people disagree, that was the performance of a lifetime for him even if it wasn't much until the Helmet Catch, which ironically was his last ever catch.
Unlikely because of how many teams have running backs by committee and run less as a percentage of plays in general. A list of unbreakable NFL records could be filled with volume rushing records.
@@fortynights1513 Yep. Teams don't operate with true workhorse backs anymore. It's just not sustainable. Derrick Henry to me was the last we'll see of that. I looked up the running backs to play in Superbowls during this millennium, and the closest someone came to Timmy Smith was Michael Pittman in Superbowl 37. 124 rushing yds. And a good reason for his yards was Tampa Bay jumping out to such a big lead that they were running the ball a ton so they could drain the clock.
@@KMC5240In Smith’s case, Washington also had 35 points at the end of the second quarter, so they also ran a lot (also a team that did so a lot generally).
@@fortynights1513 They had a big lead at the half, but Smith was putting up yards in the first half while Washington was making it a game, taking the lead, and extended their lead. He had 131 rushing yds in the first half. More than half of what he finished with.
@@KMC5240True, and that’s more than Pittman in that whole game. Also you mentioned workhorse backs, well Derrick Henry this next season might reach 10,000 yards rushing, and after him, and maybe Christian McCaffrey, I don’t know who else could rush for 10K in their career. Don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of players that might be capable of reaching 10,000 yards, but most probably won’t get the opportunity to do so.
WR are most common on these lists because teams have so many of them and it is also the easiest position to replace. Pittsburgh's Markus Wheaton was good but they had 5 or 6 WR on those teams that were even better. He had 2 seasons with over 640 yards receiving as a non starter(which means he isn't a 1 hit wonder) which just happened to be the only 2 seasons he played more than a couple plays. He retired at 27 to take care of his 3 children and to keep his body mostly healthy.
One Hit Wonders! They have one shot to shine with talent! The Jeff Janis Hail Mary from Aaron Rodgers was amazing to see and Aaron Rodgers did it twice the same season. Malcolm Smith is another name that comes to mind. 10 tackles, 6 solo, 69 yard pick 6 and Super Bowl MVP. Never heard his name before or after that Super Bowl against the broncos
The ironic part about Chris Matthews big game in the Super Bowl is that because of him the Patriots benched Kyle Arrington which then forced an unheard of backup cornerback into the game. That was Malcolm Butler. Weird how things work out.
GB went 15-1 in 2011. Got the bye, played against the NYG in the divisional round and got bounced out while the Giants went to win that Super Bowl against NE...again. I think it's great that NY embarrassed the mighty Packers twice
Helmet catch bowl will always be my favorite Super Bowl. I hated the Patriots as a kid so I was so happy, and the helmet catch just topped it off. Also, people forget that the Giants were 8-8 and barely backed into a wildcard spot that year. Which made them winning it all, and beating the 18-0 patriots that much more insane.

Max McGee in the first Superbowl. He was the backup to Boyd Dollar and didn't expect to be playing, but Dollar hurt his shoulder in practice that morning. Max was hungover but had an MVP performance
Larry Brown is not a one hit wonder. He played 95 games, started in 75 of them, 14 INT's 2 TD's. He was practically the Cowboys starting corner from his rookie year in 1991 till he left after the 95 season.
Would've loved a mention of the late Kwamie Lassiter-caught an NFL record 4 interceptions in one game back in 1998 against the Chargers. I did Taekwondo with his son back in the day, great guy and awesome performance.
Chris Matthews had 1,200 receiving yards with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2012 and was named Most Outstanding Rookie. He also won a Grey Cup with the Calgary Stampeders in 2018.

As a Ravens fan, I remember the year after the Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl we had a late season game against the Steelers where despite being ravaged by injuries and well out of the playoff picture, we somehow upset them. Chris Mathews scored the first touchdown of that game and I watched it thinking, “wasn’t that the random guy who had the breakout game in the Super Bowl last year? I wouldn't take away from him. He had a good career with a lot of picks. But O'Donnell threw the ball right to Larry Brown both times in that Super Bowl.
Redskins beating broncos was one of greatest days of my young life at age 9. Timmy Smith on another planet. Jerome Harrison’s freak run in late 2013 probably cost my a fantasy title the next year as I drafted him either in 2nd or 3rd round and he was absolute trash the next years. Marcus Wheaton was a dude I liked but he flamed out.
I was wondering whether Percy Howard was going to be mentioned. Not only was the only catch of his NFL career a touchdown in the Super Bowl, it was a very consequential TD. The opposite of a 'garbage' stat! He almost pulled the last pass of the game down for a catch in the end zone too.
The moment it was stated to raise your hand if "you know LeShon Johnson," I was like...right here! The Packers drafted him from Northern Illinois because I was a fan of his, and I thought he was going to be a good back for GB but then ended up in Arizona after 2 seasons with Green Bay. Funny, he was involved in dog fighting in 2005 in Oklahoma.
@@georgep.burdell7237 That'd make sense, but they do it during conversation/color commentary too. Like, "And a really good quarterback, is Tom Brady" kind of stuff. "One of the fastest players in the league...(pause as though distracted)...is Tyreke Hill" etc.
No wonder Timmy Smith had 200+ yards as the Washington Redskins beat The Denver Elways. You could start most healthy adult males at Running Back that day and they would at least have 50 yards. Just getting those Broncos "teams" to the Super Bowl three times in four years is one of the greatest accomplishments in NFL history. By comparison, look at the horsepower Buffalo needed oufside of Jim Kelly to get there four straight times: four other HOFers and a few borderline like Steve Tasker. And while Dan Reeves probably should be in on merit as a coach, very often his philosophy was usually to run the ball for 55 minutes and then wait until the fourth quarter and then watch Elway do something miraculous.
One thing you can say for Smith: On one of his touchdown runs he did outrun Dennis Smith I believe. Offensive line obviously helped him, but at that point he’s going against the secondary.
I don’t think Matt Flynn should be counted as a one hit wonder. He had some more action afterwards, including the 26-3 comeback against my cowboys in 2013.
12:30 Jonas Gray's performance won a Draftkings DFS contest (back when the main millionaire slate consists of the all Sunday games) he was heavily added in fantasy as I recall in my fantasy league his fabb was $50. After that because he missed practice and not getting carries he was dropped.
He says he missed that practice because he put his phone on the charger then woke up the next morning to birds chirping and knew he was fucked. He looked at his phone and the charger wasn't plugged into the wall outlet.
Not denying Timmy Smith his place at #1, but look at the size of the holes Smith runs through in that game. The Hogs were leaving caverns open for him to run through.

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
Im convinced all these guys are madden auto generated rookies in franchise cause I’ve seen these names before outside the games they played in
2:28 Almost 20 years? Try almost 30… Saw the Cowboys in a SB and knew it was longer than that 😂
As soon as I saw the title I immediately thought of Jonas Gray and Timmy Smith
Make a top 10 game winning toucndowns!!
I’m surprised this isn’t just 10 players that at some point played the Jets, they love doing those
Matt Flynn in 2013 led huge comebacks to tie the Vikings then beat the Falcons and Cowboys.
That Jeff Janis td was wild watching that live
People also forget that Chris Matthews recovered the onside kick that helped beat the packers and sent Seattle to that superbowl
I was at the Packers/Cardinals game. That was wild!!
They can still always look back at this and say that on that day I was the best on the field. So many have accomplished so much less.
As a lions fan, i had finally forgotten about that matt flynn game..thanks lol
1 I love these videos
NFL THROWBACK = 🐐🐐
Please do leading rushers / receivers / sack leaders each year by conference the way you did with leading passers
Al Michaels: "And then open is Ogletree!"
Why do all sports play-by-play people talk backwards like this?
Perhaps he was stalling until he could make out the jersey #?
But Al does make those kinds of calls frequently.
One thing you can say for Smith:
On one of his touchdown runs he did outrun Dennis Smith I believe.
Offensive line obviously helped him, but at that point he’s going against the secondary.
I don’t think Matt Flynn should be counted as a one hit wonder. He had some more action afterwards, including the 26-3 comeback against my cowboys in 2013.
Or 2010 when he went toe to toe with New England on a SNF
12:30 Jonas Gray's performance won a Draftkings DFS contest (back when the main millionaire slate consists of the all Sunday games) he was heavily added in fantasy as I recall in my fantasy league his fabb was $50. After that because he missed practice and not getting carries he was dropped.
He says he missed that practice because he put his phone on the charger then woke up the next morning to birds chirping and knew he was fucked. He looked at his phone and the charger wasn't plugged into the wall outlet.
Yep that was a crazy story.
I immediately thought of David Tyree of course! He made the most memorable catch in NFL history and did absolutely nothing outside of that!
Not denying Timmy Smith his place at #1, but look at the size of the holes Smith runs through in that game. The Hogs were leaving caverns open for him to run through.
Janus MAY be a one hit wonder but he’s in EVERY SINGLE HIGHLIGHT compilation the NFL has ever put out. Everyone who watches any football at all knows the dudes story bye doesn’t belong on this list of guys we’ve never heard of
Janis made possibly the 2 most clutch catches in nfl history win or lose, and I never heard of him after that game
I remember trent edwards gave us all false hole in Buffalo that we have found our first franchise quarterback since Jim kelly . That was just mean adrian Wilson
Payton Hillis from the Browns is my #1... Cover athlete of the buggiest Madden game that ever came out... (Madden 11)...
I watched just to see if Timmy Smith was here. HTTR!!
HTTR4L!❤
Other one hit wonder legend: Anthony Allen, Redskins WR in 1987
8 catches, 255 yards ( still franchise record) and 3 tds
I’ll never forget the one day Jonas Gray was the best RB in the league
Ahhhhh Matt Flynn 6 tds got him $19 millions!!!
