Harry Engel Tom Brady is on the list. His backup career is far less expansive than Young’s.

@@JonPITBZN Should I start the list?Foles has the Highest post passer rating in NFL history. Still one of the highest pre-season passer ratings. Files has the Highest completion % in NFL history. Files ties most TDs in a game 7 for 0 int. 3rd QB to ever win a Super bowl with 4 or less games in the season. Foles has one of the best Td-Int ratio 27-2 in history and the only QB in NFL history to record 20 plus passing TDs with no more than 2 int. Also has more Team records... but I'll leave that for next time.

Plunkett is #1 by a mile. He was a true backup and WON 2 SBs after starting the season second on the depth chart. Other QBs on the list are better overall, but hes the best BACKUP
An honorable mention would be Danny White as Roger Staubach's backup. In the 1978 playoffs he came off the bench with the team losing 20 to 13 and won the game 27 to 20. This propelled them to their second straight Super Bowl.

I believe it was 5 games that Stover and the defense did all the scoring, and we lost the last 3.
I dont know why people hate on him, he was very good for us and did what he was asked- play conservative, dont turn it over, get into field goal range but hit the long passes if you see one wide open. And he did. I dont understand how people can talk about how bad he is after the super bowl performance he put up too. That ball he threw for the touchdown was absolutely perfect.
Joe Montana and Steve Young were literally one of the NFL's biggest starter-backup duos and, somehow, Young didn't make it here. Wtf.
Because he wasnt a career back up. He sat a few like Rodgers did. Montana got sent to the chiefs and Brett team hopped.

Earl Morrall was 33 wins and 4 losses as a starter from 1968 to 1976. 15-2 in 1968 and 9-0 in 1972 alone. When asked about the HOF QB's he coached, Unitas, Griese and Marino, Don Shula said "If a game was on the line, Morrall would be my starter. He has a special place in my personal hall of fame".

Earl was a 3x sb champ. He backed up Unitas and griese under the Shula regime. I believe he was robbed of his chance to start in the super bowl after posting a perfect record.tough competitor worthy of respect he should be in HOF

I went to high school with Frank Reich’s daughter back from 2004-2008 in Charlotte, NC. Frank and his family lived in the Charlotte area for several years during the 2000’s. He was the head pastor and creator of a large local church in Charlotte during this time. They ended up moving around 2010, and after awhile he was hired as a coach in the NFL and moved to his current home. He was a super nice guy, met him a bunch of times, very humble and easy going. Underrated quarterback in a lot of people’s minds, glad he’s pretty high up on this list

Peterman was changing the way the position was played but these low IQ fans never could understand his God like play and neither could hisreceivers. It's all there fault. Kurt Warner was such an amazing QB that I forget he was a back up.
He couldn't make an NFL roster the first few years of his career. He backed up Trent Green before he had his coming out party before losing his job to Marc Bulger. He was shipped off to NY where he was just keeping the seat warm Eli and was out cast to Arizona to sit behind Matt Leinhart. He spent a good part of his career as a back-up. He is well-deserved of the HOF, but how can you not remember him as a back-up?
THAT is how good Warner was...he puts me in mind of a Jim Plunkett; both were highly talented, very experienced, had tasted the sweetness of success and the bitterness of defeat and were almost lost to the game, yet found redemption.

At the time of of his 3rd Superbowl, he had the most, 2nd most, and third most passing yards in any Superbowl game. Kurt Warner is a Hall of Famer.

I agree with Kurt Warner at number 1, I did want to mention though that Earl Morall had a 39 game stretch (over 4 seasons, Regular Season and Playoffs) where his teams went 35-4. That's pretty incredible, as a back-up QB. He was certainly helped by having 2 great defenses (in Baltimore and Miami) but 35-4 still speaks for itself.

@@Adays700 Steve Young played in '88 and '89 when they won those Super Bowls. When the 49ers let go of Joe Montana, some fans lost they damn minds. When Young and 49ers played Montana and the Chiefs, some 49ers fans were cheering for the Chiefs to win the game. I also believe Steve Bono should be on this list not apart of the Bret Favre back-up tree.
@@Adays700 - true, but Young had some big moments as a backup. He filled in for Montana and got the 49ers to the playoffs for the '88 season. He was excellent during the 1991 and '92 seasons that Montana lost to injury. He was an excellent backup who accomplished something every time he got a chance. He just never directly took them to a Super Bowl except after Montana had gone to KC and Young was the unquestioned starter.
Steve Young was a backup for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he went to the 49ers too, why he is not on this list blows my mind.
Respect to Trent Dilfer - he deserves more.
Being from Maryland, a lot of us were pissed with how Billick treated Trent. He clearly just did not like him for some reason. Ditched Dilfer for Grbac, which cmon at least give Trent his bench job back. Instead they didnt even talk to him when he came in to get his ring and his stuff. Just shipped him off and didnt even entertain the idea of keeping him.
Billick was not actually a good coach. He got very lucky to have Marvin Lewis commanding his defense, Ray Lewis being a generational if not all-time talent, and a lot of the players on the Ravens being under-the-radar dominant players- Sharper, McCalister, Stokley(Sp?,) Ismail, and about 10 other names I could list but I'll stop. He's supposed to be an offensive mastermind but Baltimores offense was always dreadful when Billick got to have his way.
@@booradley6832Dilfer was not a good QB lol. Threw almost as many interceptions as touchdowns that regular season and couldn’t even complete 50% of his passes or throw for 150 ypg in the playoffs. He missed throw after throw in the Super Bowl and threw a pick 6 on a screen that got called back.
I love that Drew Bledsoe wasn't pissed off that Brady took his job. How encouraged him, told him good good job and tried his hardest to win his spot back, but couldn't. He didn't act like Brett Favre
I believe Jeff Garcia should be on this list. Look at his body of work after his San Fran run. He became a journeyman that had solid outings with several franchises.

Tom Brady backed up Drew Bledsoe. Picked #199 in the 6th round after 31 teams passed on him 6 times! Won his first Super Bowl (as a back up QB) when I was 27 years old. Just won another one, his 6th, last year after I turned 45... How is Brady not #1?
Kurt Werner was a rookie at 29 years old and took his team to 3 super worlds and one 1 while also being the best qb when he played

I think this list is more about quarterbacks who spent either the majority or at least a significant portion of their career as a backup, and when called upon to come off the bench, they’re able to get results. Brady is the greatest quarterback of all time but after 2001, he wasn’t a backup anymore, he was the full time starter and never looked back. If you go by that criteria, Kurt Warner would be higher than Brady on the list because he did it twice, coming off the bench to replace an injured Trent Green in 1999 and leading the Rams to a Super Bowl win, then doing it again in 2008, he was the backup to Matt Leinart, got the starting job after poor performances by Leinart, and leading the Cardinals to an NFC Championship victory and two straight division titles.

Drew Bledsoe will always be my #1 backup quarterback. Not because he was actually a backup quarterback, but because if Drew Bledsoe is your starter your team's backup quarterback will begin to play amazing and take his job.
Honorable mentions: Danny White (punted and backed up Staubach), Steve Young (behind Montana), Romo (behind Bledsoe and has a brilliant football mind), Dandy Don backed up Eddie LeBaron for two torturous years before taking over and taking the Cowboys to back-to-back NFL Championship games, where they lost both times to Lombardi's prime Packers, and with both games decided in cinematic fashion at the goal line on the final play of the game.
All four of them are worthy of this list.

Fact that Kurt Warner told them that about Eli Manning, mad respect, great dignity shown from Kurt, sucks he was plagued by concussions i hope his later years will not cause him trouble like others who suffered lot of concussions playing sports.

Did you forget that guy named Brett Farve? You named his backups but he was a backup as well. In 1992 he was a backup to Don Majkowski. When Majkowski was injured, Farve replaced him and never looked back.
Not to mention those years he spent buried in the QB depth chart in Atlanta...
Earl Morrall really played behind Y.A Tittle, Bobby Layne, Fran Tarkenton, Bob Griese and Johny Unitas. That’s 5 hofs.

Here in Denver we're kinda proud of our backup Gary Kubiak. If Elway got hurt and Koobs had to go in you knew it was going to be alright.

Young is known mostly as a starter. This is mostly about career back ups or one year wonders. Brady would have to come off this list as he is now a starter. You get it

For People commenting saying that Rodgers or Foles should be on this list... I'm not sure when exactly this was made, but... I am pretty sure it was made long before Super Bowl LII, due to the fact that it mentioned calling Warner, one of the "best of the decade". My guess it might have been made sometime in the early 2010s. Rodgers wasn't really a backup to Favre. He did back him up in one game back in 2007, but that's it. So, I won't count him.
As for this countdown, I agree with Warner being up there. I always respected him and everything that he went through to become the Super Bowl MVP QB he became. Brady might have five rings, but Warner sure had to go through a lot more than Brady did to get where he did, while leading two different teams to a Super Bowl.
Rogers is on the list though at number 7. Cant really have Rogers or Young on this list as they were drafted as the future not the backup.
Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers,etc. All great quarterbacks who were backups, but because of some circumstances (injuries, trades, retirements, etc.) became starters. Makes you wonder how many great quarterbacks we've missed out on (or are missing out on) simply because their quarterback didnt get hurt or leave the team
George Blanda once came into a game for the Raiders and they scored 4 times in the final 4 minutes to win the game. Most amazing performance I ever I witnessed!

Unquestionably? Not at all. The only records he holds are career yards, which is a collection stat. His individual efforts are not exceptionally above everyone else like you're suggesting. Doesnt have the most in season, game or per attempt (Manning, Van Brocklin and Graham respectively) He has super bowl victories on a technicality, he's tied with Otto Graham who had 7 championships- the superbowl with a different name- and lead his team there 10 consecutive seasons.
He's a great quarterback but the only reason for the NFL to hype him up as the greatest is as marketing. He's another in a line of generational talents that has their individual up and downsides, mostly up, but does not stand out above the others because he cant, nobody can. You really cant pluck a player from an era and say they're better than everyone who played under different circumstances, with other players, under different rules, with teammates, ownership, coaching, medical technology and other things outside of their control all as factors. Even Belichick thinks Bert Jones was a better QB, but he lived in a time before the medical technology could properly support him. They ruined his shoulder whereas today he would have been able to play 15 years.
So no, the jury is out unless you're just playing the fanboy.

Earl Morrel and Kurt Warner are legendary players at this point so having them as the top 2 back up qbs makes sense to me

Also Ryan Fitzpatrick. I get Ryan never went from back-up to starter to champion, but Ryan is a solid back-up and a back-up to feel confident in off the bench.
Kurt Warner was an inspirational player and from what I understand, he is a good person ... Nice guys finish first!
Missing Honorable Mention, arguable top 10: Gary Kubiak, Denver Broncos. Kubiak was John Elway's backup, seemingly forever. Darn good QB. Elway would be out injured, and Denver's opponent (e.g., Seattle Seahawks) would come into the game expecting to win with Elway out. All Kubiak would do is carve up the D and win the game, leaving the opponents thinking they might have had a better chance against Elway.
I love Jim Plunkett and wouldn’t consider him a backup because he began as a starter, lost his way, and then regained his starter status. Some of these other guys were backups, got a moment to help the team, and then went back to backup status.
The only reason New York won against San Francisco in 1990 was because Joe Montana went down with an injury after being hit.

Boo hoo. The Giants lost Phil Simms earlier in the season. 49ers had a hall of Fame backup and hime field. Giants were just better.

I remember that year the Ravens won the Super Bowl with Dilfer. There was a guy who promised to live on his roof until the Ravens scored an offensive touchdown. I think he was out there for 3 weeks. That Ravens defense that year was one of the greatest of all time, several HOFers.
Teddy Bridgewater saved the Saints season last year, when Drew Brees couldn't play for like five games because of an injury to his throwing hand (something I still think he's feeling the effects of to this day, to be completely and totally honest with you). Teddy stepped up to the plate and won ALL FIVE of the games that he was backup to Drew for. I was at those games, by like the third game the fans loved him so much they were chanting several times throughout the games "Teddy! Teddy! Teddy!" It really hurt to see him go to Carolina, but at the same time he deserves to be a starter somewhere and I am both proud of him and grateful for what he did last year. I have even watched a few of his games and rooted for him, something I'd never have pictured myself doing for the Panthers before.

The thing I liked about Doug Williams was he could through a football faster than most baseball pitchers could through a baseball. Maybe to fast.
Also beat Elway who didnt wanna play in the DMV in 83.He lost the superbowl to a DMV qb 😆
