The things people don’t know or remember about Scott Mitchell are 1). He had a MONSTER year when Lions signed him in ‘95 2). There were no other free agent QBs available to sign. Detroit won a several team bidding war for Mitchell just because he filled in for Marino for 6 or 7 games and did....pretty okay.
I remember it. Free agency was new, so it took teams to get the hang of it. Also, yes, there are always teams that need a quarterback and there are just never enough decent ones to go around. Mitchell wasn't great but when your most recent options are Rodney Peete and Andre Ware almost anyone else looks better. If not the Lions some other team would have paid him.
10. Emmitt Smith 0:00 9. Scott Mitchell 3:09 8. Ahman Green 6:37 7. Jeff Garcia 9:17 6. David Boston 12:30 5. Neil O'Donnell 15:07 4. Andre Rison 18:29 3. Raiders Super Bowl MVPs 22:00 2. Alvin Harper 26:01 1. Anyone to the Redskins 29:24
Interesting at the 6:00 that guy says Scott Mitchell was the most valuable QB statistically in 1995. It is interesting because he went 32-12 TD-INT that year. Ten years later, Carson Palmer had the same numbers and led the league with TD passes and TD-INT ratio. And as the league has evolved, the passing gets better each year. So for Mitchell to have the same amount of success as the best QB statistically ten years later is quite remarkable.
@Nigward I am just saying. In 04 the fact that Culpepper threw 41 touchdowns (I think) and was overshadowed by Manning's 49 and then the next season Palmer leading the league with 32 says something. But my point that Mitchell's numbers in 95 being rather remarkable still stands in my mind.
He also had two WRs get 1500 yards receiving that year, which was a first. Lions really weren't that bad a team in the 90's (they even remained a playoff team for a year or two after Barry Sanders left), it' just that they couldn't do anything in the postseason, outside of 1991.
I remember Desmond Howard. He was a great return man with the Packers. Because he could work with how the Packers blocked at the time. Also, all he did there was return punts and kickoffs. He was not a starting receiver. He wasn't going to be a receiver until he learned the job. He left before that happened, and was a flop. I remember seeing him on a TV show complaining about only be a return specialist.
@@chandlersbryant4047 It was even worse, as the Eagles' QB in that game was Rodney Peete, i.e. the guy Mitchell had been brought in to Detroit to replace. Peete had arguably the best game of his career against his old team and Mitchell was a disaster.
The Ravens brought Mitchell in for a season with a good D and it was a nightmare. One team that blew us out described going after the big and clumsy Mitchell as "he was like a big water buffalo back there." Haha. One of the first mistakes Brian Billick made.

Also, Scott Mitchell threw 4400 yards and 32tds. In addition to a decent year, smith, like they said for gods sake, brought fans in.....so that’s a very smart signing. This list blows
It was deliberately ignored because it didn't fit the narrative of the show. I'm a lifelong Eagles fan so Emmitt was never my favorite. But he had a HOF career and deserved a lot more respect.
Exactly on emmitt When they did their 31,000 per yard math for the 2 YEARS 8 Million dollars They did all 8 million on year 1 Purposefully deceptive Unless this was made in 2004 or before year 2 but I don’t think it was
You just made me remember something hilarious when I was younger around eight of my friends did a fantasy football league every year for almost a decade. I had one friend who kept bugging us to jump in for 3 or 4 years in a row but the only way he could was if one of the guys dropped out which finally happened after the fourth year. the thing was he loved video games but knew nothing about actual football or Sports in general the year was 2005 or 6 or something like that. all he knew was madden in 2000 & he knew it inside out. Of course he ends up getting the first pick in the draft and even today almost 20 years later I can close my eyes and see the entire moment vividly when we started the draft and he walked back into the room from the kitchen died his cigarette out looked at all of us and with a look of complete confidence as he banged his fist onto the table he said.... "I'll take DAVID BOSTON baby!" For the next five or six seconds there was complete silence in the room and aside from my friend shall we I don't think anybody smiled drop their call or move the muscles as he glanced around it all of us with a huge smile on his face thinking he had just made the pck which locked the championship down for him without a doubt. I could just be remembering you this long but I'm I was the one who finally broke the silence by making that noise you made when you feel your cheeks with air and blow them out before breaking into one of those fits that goes on so long it actually hurts. Everyone immediately followed prompting Joey to look at us all with complete shock and be interning red as he said what's wrong? he's the best receiver in the game? that's a good pick isn't it? I'm not going to go into David Boston details but I'm sure everyone understands that even in his heyday which had passed by this point he was maybe a 4th round pick it was just a hilarious moment and my friend dropped out after that first year so thanks for the donation Joey. Edit When I originally wrote this comment I had just started watching the video and had absolutely no idea that David Boston was on this list!!!! LMAO

Emmett smith's 2nd season with the cardinals was actually decent, they focus on 1 injury riddled season but he ran for just under 1000 yards and had 9 touchdowns in 15 games
@@christopherhaynes8101 yeah his last season was alright, they are just saying it wasn’t worth that much money especiallg with inflation 2 years $11 million with todays monetary value
Yeah, Smith was still effective to a degree and I remember him with the Cardinals. He was hurt for a lot of one year and came back for a final season. I can still remember there being moments where he looked like he was young. It's crazy how that works. Guys get older but every once in a while, it's like their body is feeling great and they have some plays where they look like they're 10 years younger. I remember watching a game when he was with the Cardinals and he had some plays where I was like, "Omg, wow. He looks like he did years ago." I was young and just didn't realize at the time that age works that way.
The worst thing about the Larry Brown and Alvin Harper deals is that it was part of the process that dismantled dominant Cowboy teams. And Oakland compounded their mistake while further tearing up Dallas by signing Russell Maryland in 96. Those players couldn't be the man for bad teams elsewhere but they certainly could have continued to be part of an exceptional team in Dallas if they had stayed.
Smith in Arizona doesn’t belong on this list. He didn’t make a difference in wins but many players who were there during that time said he changed the culture there. He also instilled a TON of invaluable veteran knowledge to all stars we know today like Larry Fitzgerald.
Couldn't agree more. Larry Fitzgerald has said that for years and he said it in the football life episode on Smith. He said he and boldin learned a lot from him and it shaped their early years big time.
10:08 it wasn’t Garcia’s fault in Cleveland - Butch Davis had no business coaching in the NFL. Garcia later had good years with both the Eagles and the Buccaneers. He’s taking the heat for Davis.
@@KWCline91 Yeah. A redone list would absolutely include him. When you trade a highly paid, prized QB away and give up a huge pick to ship him away, you've messed up in the front office. He went from potentially the puzzle piece for the Texans to their championship puzzle, to being a boat anchor on those hopes.
When it comes to RBs, if you're looking in free agency, you'd better not be looking for an all-purpose feature back. The only solid one of those signed as a free agent was Curtis Martin. One lone exception in a field of mistakes is clear: search only for role-player backs.
Smith's 2nd season with AZ was actually not as bad as this video depicts. By no means was Smith the same as he was back in Dallas, but he rushed for just under a thousand yards behind one of the worst ranked offensive lines in NFL history. I don't know if he really deserves to be on this list.
Yeah, most of the clips they showed of him playing poorly were because his line completely blew their blocks and he got smoked in the backfield. Kind of hard to rush effectively when your O-Line gives the D a free line into the backfield every play.
There was a lot of excitement when they signed him. Personally I never pictured him out of a Cowgirl uni. It was helpful in legitimizing the Cards as was drafting Fitz.
Lol now that would be a good idea for a video: one season wonders. Peyton Hillis comes to mind, who else? David Johnson, RB for Arizona maybe? JuJu Smith Schuster its looking like lol
@@billblaski9523 Marcus Robinson for the Bears. 1400 yards, 9 touchdowns in 1999. Yes, you read that correctly, a Bears receiver put up those numbers. He never have more then 1 season of 700 yards iirc after that and he played multiple years following that. He came out of nowhere and just fell off the map. Noone remembers that year Marcus had because he played in a division with some great receivers taking all the focus/spotlight. I think if I brought it up to NFL Films they might be genuinely confused I'm not meaning someone else.
Emmit Smith has 937 yds in his last season in the NFL with the Cardinals. That's not bad. They also picked up the edge late in his career. Really a RB is like a QB, only as good as the O-line
As a Ravens fan, Albert Haynesworth is by far my favorite Washington player of all time. He literally stole $40,000,000 from Dan Snyder and that’s hilarious. It’s still funny to this day.
When you see how many HOFers like Emmitt Smith have gone to another team at the end of their career to demonstrate that they have nothing left, it makes you respect guys like Barry Sanders for going out at the top of their game.
Oh yeah tell me about it. Tony Dorsett got one mediocre season in Denver before he suffered a career ending injury. Franco Harris ended up in Seattle at the end of his career and was never heard from again. Marcus Allen managed to hang on for 5 more years in KC but never had over 900 yards in a season with them. And Roger Craig bounced to the Raiders and ended up in Minnesota for the end of his career. For every case of a late career revival for a player like OJ Anderson, or John Riggins there far more endings like Earl Campbell in New Orleans or OJ Simpson in San Fran.
@@ashleighelizabeth5916 All great points, but in fairness to Marcus Allen, he had to share carries with Christian Okoye. Allen made some big plays while in KC, and was very good in the redzone for them.
SAM BRADFORD should of been #1 And he is still getting checks........ this dude has been getting paid since his first big injury out of College. Good luck Arizona for signing him in 2018

10:28 It wasn't that Jeff Garcia was a bad player, in actuality he was very good. He took my Philadelphia Eagles to the Playoffs . Cleveland is such a deplorable place to play football is what made him look so Damn bad. Cleveland is so bad that the original team relocated to Baltimore won 2 Superbowls, They named an expansion team The Cleveland Browns and they Suck ass more than the original team.
You do know the Brown won 16 championships since they became a football team right? Theybalso won their division/conference a total of 23 times. So how can you say the original team sucked? But the team name never left. The Ravens didn't play a season as the Browns they didn't inherit the Browns history like the Titans inherited the Oilers history.
I remember Neil O'Donnell signing with the Jets. What is forgotten is Neil O'Donnell was a decent quarterback in his second year after the Jets got Bill Parcells as their head coach. O'Donnell's first year with the Jets he had the worst head coach and his two receivers were both rookie; Number 1 overall pick Keyshawn Johnson and undrafted Wayne Chrebet.
They can say all they want about Ahman Green but he absolutely deserved that contract. What this league does to RBs is despicable. Pick em up for cheap, run em into the ground, and toss em to the side without ever paying them near what they're worth.
membersonlydave Jeff Garcia was a good quarterback who at times flirted with being great, he was just in a bad situation in Cleveland with a bad team, poor coaching and no direction or cohesion whatsoever.
Yeah Brock Osweiler was absolutely terrible even with Denver he wasn't worth any money they pay him by the way they really Paid Kirk cousin 87 million I didn't know that you're right that is absolutely absurd and unheard of pay an average quarterback that much money I think it's just downright ridiculous how much money these football players make just to play a couple games a year that money should be cut back exponentially and in turn be given to the men and women that fight for our country who are fighting for dirt cheap to fight for our freedom I also think that money should be used to help the veterans and the homeless people find shelter you realize how many empty mouths you could feed with that kind of money how many homeless shelters and Veteran shelters you could build with that money even if you just cut them back 10 million dollars a year they will still be making enough money that they'll never have to do anything else in their lives but then you have these guys getting paid millions and millions of dollars a year just to play football it's ridiculous it is not right at all it's so corrupt they make more than surgeons do way more I think they should at Max be paid seven hundred fifty thousand a year if that sorry for the rant you guys it's just how much money they make gets me so heated and angry
As a eagles fan i agree namdi has to be one of the worse but i think its 50 50 because we got hitters too bit i think the "DREAM TEAM" was the moment our secondary died. And Peterson brought it back to life
Do not let the score fool you. When Mitchell was benched in the third quarter, the score was 51-7. He had thrown 4 interceptions, including a pick 6 and completed less than half of his passes. His backup, Don Majkowski, actually put up better stats and made the score respectable in helping the Lions put up 30 points in the second half.
Where going need a new update with the Worst free agent signing. Because theirs more bad deals, Deshaun Watson, Daniel Jones, Russell Wilson, and I know theirs more that are missed this year.
As a Raider fan, I'm insulted. Larry Brown and Desmond Howard aren't even top 5 worst free agents. MeAngelo Hall made $1 million per game (and had $24.5 million in guaranteed money) and the Raiders cut him after EIGHT GAMES! Same year, we signed Gibril Wilson to a 6 yr/$39 million and he was a flat out bust. Cut after one year and $16 million in guarantees. And yet, none of them TOUCH Javon Walker. $55 million contract...he caught 15 passes in TWO YEARS. At least Desmond Howard made a few plays for us on special teams. Not even remotely comparable to those deals...we were STILL dealing with Al Davis's cap hell when Reggie McKenzie got hired.
It’s hard to ‘raise mediocre talent to another level’ when your laying on your back. I’m not a Jets fan but I felt bad for Neil O’Donnell that year. We would all count out loud until the first defensive player got a hand on him, rarely got past 3. The guy couldn’t even get his passing arm up before he was sacked. That offensive line let him get beat to death then they dared questioned his toughness. It was a QB slaughter no matter who the Jets O-line faced. The only one who took pleasure in O’Donnell’s o-line death squad-if they were trying to get him killed, they couldn’t have done more-was my husband…the life long, die hard, there’s only one team…you got it…Steeler’s fan. If you mention O’Donnell to this day, that man will go off in a tirade. He has never, will never, get over those two interceptions which were so bad with no Steeler in sight, my darlin’ insists O’Donnell was paid to throw the game. I’ve never heard him say that about another player in any sport. Ewwwww, a blast from the past…I feel a BAD MOON RISIN.
O'Donnell actually did pretty well after the Jets when he went to the Titans and became McNair's backup. Neil won several games for us when Steve was out. As for Haynesworth, I never understood what happened with him. He (mostly) played really well for the Titans. We won more games with him on the field than we did when he was on I.R.. Then he goes to Washington and turns into a huge bust. I never understood his thought process there. It was like he just suddenly shut down and gave up. Never made sense to me.
He played in a 43 system in Nashville. Lined up over the offensive guard or tackle. In DC they forced him to play over the center as a nose tackle. Completely different skill set and Albert was not excited to do that...so he didnt
@@randalprichard7206 a great player will learn to adapt and be a great at a new position, a lazy one would fold himself and just give up. It's as simple as that.
@Fries As an Eagles fan my favourite Kotite moment was after we beat Buddy Ryan's Cardinals to go 7-2, he said, "People complain about my coaching but my record speaks for itself". They proceeded to lose out, 7-9, and Goodbye Rich Kotite. Hello Ray Rhodes. Fun fact: many Pro Bowlers key to the 4 consecutive Conference Championship appearances Andy Reid gets credit for, Dawkins, Taylor, Vincent, Staley, Mayberry, Tra Thomas, Trotter were all Ray Rhodes era picks and signings.
Couldn't be further from the truth, except Mitchell lasted longer with his team than Osweiler did. Both of them were backups, extremely tall for quarterbacks, got big fat dollar contracts, couldn't handle the pressure of being a full time starter, were immature, and then plummeted. Mitchell was surrounded with more talent on offense that Osweiler was. Mitchell was surrounded with multiple pro bowl players including Barry Sanders, Cory Schlesinger, Herman Moore, Tommy Carter, David Sloan, Lomas Brown, and Kevin Glover. Osweiler had only two pro bowlers DeAndre Hopkins and Duane Brown.
They failed to mention how Emmit Smith had over 900 yards rushing and 9 TD's his second year with the Cards. At 35 years old, by the way. What a dumb ranking!
I was thinking the same thing? I said didn't he get 800+? Then I watched this and I said "well I don't even need to look it up. I must have been imagining"
Emmitt Smith still ran for 950 yards in his 2nd season with the Arizona Cardinals. Thats not bad at all. The first season was just marred with injuries.
100% of the blame has to be on ownership and the front office. It all starts at the top. If you can’t get things together at the base level you won’t get it together on the field. Same with any business. Unless you have amazing employees that can work through the ineptitude you’re companies bound to fail without solid smart leadership. Hopefully the Browns will one day find that. But for now it seems they are lost.
to me one of the biggest free agent bonehead signings i can remember was when al davis gave d'angelo hall $70 million and $24 mil guaranteed for like 7 years. & dude couldn't cover in man on man defense and they traded him to washington after like 8 games. like bruh how do you go to the raiders knowing they play man defense and you can't cover in man on man? dude got exposed and burned quick.
Nice list, but I would suggest that Joe Namath signing with the Rams as a free agent and playing in a total of 4 games before getting benched and ultimately retiring merits consideration as well. The money was much less back then, but the Rams definitely made the same mistake as so many teams highlighted here... chasing after a big-name player who had no actual game left.

Detroit Lions could of got Joe Montana look it up before he went to Kansas City Chiefs but Joe was old so they went with Scott Mitchell

So for Mitchell to have the same amount of success as the best QB statistically ten years later is quite remarkable.
great point
I know. No one looked at a record book to see what Mitchell's stats were in 95 or even 96 and 97.
Yes but point being, he folded like a cheap lawn chair under pressure. You gotta win games.
Honestly, most of the bad highlights for Jeff Garcia was the ineptitude of the O-Line. Bad snaps and bad blocking.

"I'll take DAVID BOSTON baby!"
For the next five or six seconds there was complete silence in the room and aside from my friend shall we I don't think anybody smiled drop their call or move the muscles as he glanced around it all of us with a huge smile on his face thinking he had just made the pck which locked the championship down for him without a doubt.
Edit
When I originally wrote this comment I had just started watching the video and had absolutely no idea that David Boston was on this list!!!! LMAO

Agreed
It’s about value.

@@lynnerose7891 Still it doesn't excuse their lack of mention for 2004.

Do not let the score fool you. When Mitchell was benched in the third quarter, the score was 51-7. He had thrown 4 interceptions, including a pick 6 and completed less than half of his passes.
Javon Walker made the Best of the Rest list so did Kerry Collins.

I agree with your husband! He HAD to be paid off
O'Donnell actually did pretty well after the Jets when he went to the Titans and became McNair's backup.
Just goes to show you his real person. He got paid all that guaranteed money and just decided to chill for the rest of his career
@Fries You mean the one with Parcells instead of Rich Kotite.
5:25 your teams defense giving up around 51 POINTS in the playoffs and you getting the blame is honestly so funny lmaoooo
Scott Mitchell = Brock Osweiler
TheBlub I was thinking the same thing, both backed up legends and played average in relief then got massive contract
To be fair, Mitchell did have a decent season in 1995, but it was just that: decent.
I say Scott Mitchell is AJ McCarron’s future
Yet DeShaun Watson lighted up that somehow mediocre offense?
They failed to mention how Emmit Smith had over 900 yards rushing and 9 TD's his second year with the Cards. At 35 years old, by the way. What a dumb ranking!
I was thinking the same thing? I said didn't he get 800+? Then I watched this and I said "well I don't even need to look it up. I must have been imagining"
I just posted that several times. Good call brother. Very ignorant... Emmitt ran for most yards after 30
The best part about these list are the pencil neck cucks, the ones who couldn't play one down of football.
you can average 60 yards a game and get 900 yards and for 8 million hell no!
Bruh so you’re telling me that brett favre’s only super bowl win he didn’t get mvp lmao
Emmitt Smith still ran for 950 yards in his 2nd season with the Arizona Cardinals. Thats not bad at all. The first season was just marred with injuries.
As a Broncos Fan I feel this list will be rewritten if Wilson has a crappy season this year
Looking like that might end up as one of the worst trades in nfl history. As an eagles fan we’ve had our share of busts too. 😭
Wilson was traded, though, right? Not a FA signing.
Should create a list of ten worst players team let walk, Drew Brees is definitely a must on the list
Are we including trades in this too? If so, Khalil Mack and OBJ is right up there
I just heard about David Buston. For the Unchargers. Same as Choke Garcia for the Cleveland Brownies.
Michael Silver sounds like he's about to yawn with every syllable he speaks.
That's pretty wild about what happens to players that go to Cleveland. Why is that?
Yeah, Garcia made the mistake signing with Cleveland it seems.
Fitty Gang Hue Jackson has only been the HC since 2016, he's had hardly any bad signs yet.
Poor leadership bad coaching over and over.
Unless you are Gary Barnidge
to me one of the biggest free agent bonehead signings i can remember was when al davis gave d'angelo hall $70 million and $24 mil guaranteed for like 7 years.
