***** I've been all up in everyone's notifications, as always!
I've worked in retail for 6 years, best advice I can tell you from working in the industry is don't get caught up in the holiday rush. I can confirm that if you wait til January- February when the real after season sales start, you'll save the most money since almost everyone is broke by that time and there isn't as much demand in retail, and businesses still need to find a way to make money, while also getting rid of stock.
Those items were never actually worth the prices you've seen before the "sale", and you don't have to pay that price. Some items are cheaper during the year than on black friday. You just have to keep an eye out and be smart, and not impulsive. Prices are inflated in the early months, and then deflated to its original price around holiday season to imitate a sale.
If you're a frequent shopper to a certain store(grocery, walmart, drugstores etc...) pay attention which and when items go on sale. Sometimes they're cheaper at the end/first of every month, or the end of each season depending on the retailer
Ex. the best time to buy winter jackets at most stores is March early-July when there is obviously no demand for them during the summer months, and businesses want to get rid of them to make room for in season merchandise
-Shop for summer clothes end of August-November IF retailers still have them in stock.
I worked 8 Black Fridays an will never shop one. People turn into animals running over each other, stealing things out of each other’s carts, etc. One year, I heard in my Walkie-Talkie that there was a customer threatening someone with a knife! Is a cheap tv really worth your self respect? 🤦🏼♀️

I actually like presents. It's a nice feeling to know you got something you really like from somebody you love. Makes it more fun using it.
But this is rarely the case. Most people don't have any clue, but feel obligated to gift you something, so you either get crap, or worse, a crappy coupon.
The "best" thing about coupons is, they run out of date. I'm very much not a restaurant type of person. I usually gift them to other people, but usually they don't end up going either. That's, over the years, hundreds of bucks we are talking about. down the drain.
Even if I end up going, it's only because of feeling guilty (which is what you want as a gift, don't you?). It sucks. You don't want to go alone, so you take someone with, but then the coupon isn't enough for both and you end up spending money at a restaurant you don't really like, to not waste that gift...
All this because people think money isn't personal enough, but somehow a coupon for a shop or restaurant you'd never go to is way better.
I could rant about this all day.

Bcuz for me, i would be fine if people give me cash for birthday. I mean, at least its not something that'll be useless (unless it had sentimental values). In my family, we oftentimes give each other gifts by what we want. we ask them about what they need, what they want. And we give them exactly that! Surprises are good, but since our family are medium-lower income, we don't want to spend valuable cash on something that we don't need, all for the sake of a surprise.
And for cash, i always appreciate it. You'll always use em, they don't expire (unlike coupons LMAO) and you don't need to do gift hunting for me, just cash it up babyyy.

Answer this, 2 years ago Macy's sent to me their black friday online deals. One of the deals I was after, Kitchen Aid Professional mixer reg. price $650, black friday online deal? $200 plus my macy's stars rewards 40% off. I only paid $120. I checked and looked and searched for that very same stand mixer during that year, not once did it go on sale, with the exception of black friday. That is just only 1 of many things that I had purchased around this time of year. Do I physically shop in stores on black friday? HELL NO!!! But at the same time, I perfer not to shop online, I much rather go to the stores. So, don't sit there and presume to tell me there are no huge sales on black friday...

I work in retail, have now for 7 years; you people have no idea how accurate this video is.
I was for 4. That fact that my store would make us work Thanksgiving to do black Friday gave me a sick feeling in my stomach and the direction we as a society have gone. It was honestly all very disgusting the more I think about. I remember watching CBLs on what to do for crowd control trample hazards. The fact that we can't control ourselves enough to not potentially kill someone to get a new TV made me embarrassed to be human on this earth.
Lol they left out the bit about jacking up the prices and then reducing it back down to the regular price and calling it a sale.

though i dont think it is entirely true. they do sell things for cheaper probably if they say 90% it's actually just 30% off but they do lower the prices.
this is basics in economics, it's better to go as low as possible in prices with items that are more necessary as every 1% cheaper gives a ton of buyers meaning more profit even with cheaper sale price.
non necessary,prestige items are much better sold as high as possible as 1% price change still leaves almost same amount of buyers.
and on black friday those prestige,unnecessary items suddenly go into category 1.

Elizabeth Swims stores do this every major season. All spring and first part of summer computers are cheaper than holiday and back to school. Plus in the last 5 years most black Friday electronics that seem unreasonably cheap are pretty much garaunteed a refurbished product, which is fine...but not the fact that its falsely advertised by not stating it. Some things are a good deal, but you really need to be careful and decide if saving 20-40 percent worth the hassle of the people.

Artificially jacking up the price only to give it a fake discount to give it a fake sense of urgency is illegal. Bethesda got in trouble for doing that in their game store a while back.

The most fun thing is when you go to buy That Thing that usually costs, let's say, 10 money but on Black Friday the tag says its usual price is suddenly 20 money and only today you can buy it for just 12 money. Yay!

I was in retail for many, many years, and I can tell you that ALL of what he says is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH.
You get better and CHEAPER deals in February - April. Most places will have good deals for the 4th of July. Then once they get rid of their summer stock and get in the fall stock......prices get jacked up. Not once, not twice, but more than three times before November!!
The "super black friday deal" you think you're getting, was regular price before summer.

It's definitely more useful than that George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine that has been at the back of a cupboard for 11 years, or that sandwich press you got on a whim, or the rice cooker that you used lots in the first month but not at all in the last year.

its not that they go unused, they go unbought. Crockpots last years after you buy one so long as you arent a clumsy twit. I use mine probably a dozen times a year, making sauce, chili, slow cooker ribs, chicken pot pie, and other assorted meals.
And it's only gotten worst 7 years later...Amazon, Target, and every other retailer seems to have created an October event, after the month long "Black Friday" events in November weren't enough. It's amazing how we can so easily be convinced we're "saving" money by buying things we weren't even remotely thinking of buying.

Davethe3rd if you look at the actually history of Thanksgiving as began by Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, it had nkthing to do with pilgrims and Native Americans. People in Europe and American all had a special time in autumn to gather and feast after thr harvest and soemtimes this lasted days. Hale simply wanted this made into a national holiday (we were like the last modern nation to do so) because at the time we had so few. The twist of tieing it to history as we think of it was just a misrepresentation in text books.

I worked in a retail electronics store (think blue shirt with yellow tag) and saw it time and time again. They would sell one stupid tv for $20 less, but what nobody notices or reads on the box (or cares), was that very significant modules were removed (like a tuner, a remote, proper attachment plugs, no speakers etc.) * My guess is that was worth well over $20. Stuff that normal models have as standard was just left out, meanwhile the joke is people woke up early, went nuts over this, researched ads, stood in line, camped outside store, fought with other customers in an overcrowded over-stressed environment over this carefully planned scam. This video is spot on, LOLOL

My analysis is that every year people start searching for things related to Black Friday on that day, and since this video discusses something related to Black Friday it receives many indirect hits from people probably looking for something else. That spike in traffic to the video triggers RUclips's AI to show it as a recommended video to others during the period when the searches occurred. I don't claim to know the exact algorithm, but as a software developer, this is how I'd personally approach implementing such a feature. Happy Thanksgiving!

My kid has worked Black Friday in Target and Game Stop.
He confirms the absolute insanity. He's witnessed customers who have mapped out each department at Target days in advance and each member of the map group is assigned a specific location. So when the doors open, these people scatter like ants in all directions to grab their assigned department item - Like a maniacal scavenger hunt. My kid says it would be much more entertaining if these people grabbed all kinds of weapons Hunger Games style before actually shopping.

You can see them from miles away, a big group literally walking the whole store with pads of paper...it's really the best when you see them walking out with nothing Black Friday, nothing but a dejected look of failure.

+KhaosElement When I worked at Target during Black Friday, the managers mapped the store out and put all of the important merchandise on a circuit around the store. They then taped the floor and blocked off all of the aisles so you could only make that circuit and end up at the cash registers. I remember the security guy (who was scary as fuck. Seriously, don't mess with Target security) talking to everyone waiting outside instructing them not to run when the doors opened and how the whole circuit thing worked. It made me laugh watching all those people fast walk like you wouldn't believe when those doors opened. They went straight to the shitty Element TV's that aren't worth a dime.
Overall though, it ended up being a pretty good system and I think they should do that in more stores.
Oh! The element TV! Those things are WORTHLESS but people flock to them like nobody's business. I saw a fist fight break out over the last one a few years back. While the two were fighting and our security was trying to break them up, myself and another Team Lead took the TV, and gave it to a little old lady who was standing there giggling. People are just too much some days.

I work for retail, and I can tell you this is completely true. The crowds shop black friday, the employees shop online, because we all know that is a far better deal and with extremely less hassle.

Eh depends on what you define as "saving" sure, if you pay $60 for something you don't need and didn't plan to buy that's a loss. But if you've been planning a big purchase for a while, have priced it out and budgeted a certain amount of money for it... If you managed to buy it for less you've created value. And you can put that money you were planning to spend, into the bank.

Same in the UK, they aren't even subtle, can if redbull priced on the can at 1.29 and then put it on deal for £1 and the deal will say it was £1.59 reduced to £1
Another one they do is sell sharing packs of chocolate that weigh roughly 120gram and it will be £1.50 then it will go on sale for £1 but the pack will be 90g instead of 120g and people buy loads of them thinking they are getting a deal when in fact they are not. Not leaving out the unmarked priced items, price for a bag of sweets will be £1.29, it will sky rocket in price to 1.89 and then you will be like fuck paying that, within 30 days it will be on deal for £1.29 or even better £1 and you think you are saving a fat amount of money resulting in buying more than you wanted in the first place, therefore you still lost out and they still made money and moved more units of the product without either lowering the price or just by simply slightly lowering the price
So we are going to ignore the fact this dude is the grandpa we never had?

I use a crockpot almost daily. I do ask the shopping and cooking for my family and I would be in big trouble without my crockpots. I've used as many as 3 during the same meal. If you don't have one but you do the cooking, your missing out. Turn cheap tough meat into folk cutting perfection.

Black Friday is spreading. 5 years ago it didn't really exist in Sweden. We laughed at the american shopping culture (while secretly being jealous when thinking about the deals we could miss out on) Now it's a thing over here as well. No chaos though. And after the first few years people are already starting to complain about the crappy deals and show it's a sham.
But I actually think we kinda enjoy the fact that there's some event happening in November for once...since we don't Thanksgiving or much else happening during November.

+BenRangel Same here in Brazil, nothing happens on November... But stores raise their prices a week before and the "discount" is the same price you'd pay a month before Black Friday, or even more. It's just a scam. The best time of the year to buy stuff is January, no one is in the mood and the stores have to lower their prices because of how high of a stock they may still have from the last year.

I have never experienced Black Friday, but as a German I suppose it is comparable to the good old Sommer-/Winterschlussverkauf (that doesn't exist like that anymore for a decade or so). Moms punching other moms in the face, pushing them down the stairs to get the last pair of 20 cents reduced socks. I nightmare for every child, because there are 3000 people in one shop, trying to get as many sales-ware as possible.

I remember my last black Friday. I work at a major retailer in the Automotive Center and my job was trying to figure out how to stuff a 70 inch TV into a Toyota Prius. The good old days before I became a glorified stocker.

Fun fact: If a retailer sells a crock pot for $30 during the year, they'll bump it up to $40 on Black Friday and list it for 50% off, thus bumping it back down to $20. So, the retailer takes a smaller hit for an inflated percentage discount, and as a result, sucking in more prospective buyers. :)

Funny enough, he's right. I worked in retail for many years, and Black Friday was the most stressful and dreaded day of the entire year. Now a lot of retailers open on Thanksgiving night, too or have so-called "Black Friday" deals the week leading up to the actual day itself.

I do my holiday shopping in the beginning of the year. I buy the same thing for everyone: gift cards (the type you can use anywhere). Short, sweet and to the point. I haven’t been in a Black Friday line once and have no plans to change that.

Personally I enjoy shopping on black friday. But not because of the "deals" or any of the reasons stores think people want to shop on black friday. I just enjoy going out and seeing the crowds and it's sorta the beginning of the holiday season for me, the day where I start listening to christmas music and wearing sweaters and everything. Just generally a nice kick off to the whole thing, with the added bonus of getting a bunch of my shopping done super early so i don't have to think about it later once things are sightly more picked over
