One thing I forgot to talk about was the image going around showing off what looks to be some sort of badge system. Obviously we'll have to wait and see, but at the moment it feels a lot like the "partner" system. It looks cool, and I'm glad it's there, though it feels like another half-step toward the original concept rather than a full return to it. We'll know soon enough, though!
That'd actually be a smart boss idea and a really smart promotion that wouln't be there just for the sake of. On the other hand, MS dropped clippy a long ago anbd I don't think they want to hear of him ever again
Hard to talk about that when there's so much else to talk about, both in the trailer and also outside of it. It WAS a "'blink and you'll miss it" moment within the trailer, just like the fire bird and water dragon.
what if bobby is the son of Bobbery from ttyd and due to the memory loss thing he forgot about it. and he might be separated from his father so he is on the quest to find him.
Well he kinda is a regular Bob-Omb. There is nothing special about him. Just put another Bob-Omb beside him and you won´t even know which one is Bobby.
I feel like “half-step” was definitely the right word to use in regards to Origami King. I think it boils down to the conflict between the game the creators/developers want to make and have a passion for versus what game the fans want to see. Honestly, I think it also has to do with the genre of traditional jrpgs being mostly incompatible with Nintendo’s design philosophy. Nintendo always wants to be the leaders of innovation and create unique game experiences. The problem? Jrpgs is a relatively stagnant genre when it comes to gameplay experience. Sure, you have differences in combat “styles” between Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy, Paper Mario, etc., but the general strategy behind the battle mechanics are pretty much all the same. And it’s even more apparent when you look at games from the same series (e.g. FF1 and FF7 is basically the same battle structure with the uniqueness coming from minor things like statuses, elemental types, special moves, etc.) Then why do people love a jrpg series so much if it is relatively stagnant compared to other genres? The only thing that makes sense is that the players fall in love with the characters, the settings, basically what makes the rpg genre so amazing imo. I think that’s why we see the downward spiral of the Paper Mario series. Nintendo/game developers want to make a game with a unique experience, which is great in its own right, but I would say successful RPGs require you to make a unique story and develop a game around it. I would say the original Paper Mario itself exemplifies the RPG genre the best actually. An RPG should be a book. A book that is a page turner from cover to cover. P.S. Well, that was a lot longer than I thought it was going to be haha. Thanks if you read it all, even if it dragged on. 🙂
"the players fall in love with the characters, the settings, basically what makes the rpg genre so amazing imo" Ya know... that's a good point honestly. Even the original Paper Mario nailed those down to a "T" and the story was basically rescue Princess Peach from Bowser but clearly, Peach gets more involved in helping Mario out on his adventure and Peach getting help from the little star Twink is adorable. ;0 And even amongst the generic Toads, you also have Toads with small design quirks that make them stand out. I can always remember Russ T. because of those small quirks (he's a blue Toad with reading glasses, and a dictionary in his hand and he lives in like a makeshift library lol). or Tayce T. the old lady Toad chef. lol. We even had Toads with turbans who look like they come from the Middle East. lmao. I didn't even think about that at the time but that's pretty interesting. Now, there are _only_ generic Toads. There's not even Toadette (she was in Thousand Year Door) But your comment is interesting. I can agree that they're all very similar with *some* differences to set each one apart gameplay wise, but the characters, stories, and settings are what really shine.
I always consider paper mario to be more unique compared to other rpgs. So for they to change an already unique rpg series just didn't make sense to me.
Interesting comment. Never really thought of Nintendo trying to take this series and constantly try to change it up. Especially how the first two games were so similar.
I agree too. Like imagine if the coloured pencil boss was a disgruntled artist and had their own reason for joining the origami king and was actually an original character. The tape could have been a weird mechanic who uses tape to fix everything. It would be so much more intriguing and interesting if they were actual characters instead of just things
"Okay. You're allowed to use original characters in Paper Mario again... but you're limited to whatever's on your desk right now." -Miyamoto, probably.
Im convinced Miyamoto put people on the spot to come up with a boss design and they only had 10 seconds so they panicked and grabbed the first thing on their work desk.
There's rumor about its name being a thing added in the english version, and that in the original japanese he's just called bob-omb. Can't really confirm it or deny it.
In this game's universe, Mario and everyone else are made of paper, right? That means that the confetti is made from the severed body parts of Mario's enemies!
The thing about the “thing” bosses is that... well, people still remember Rawkhawk and want him in Smash Bros. No one will ever want Tape in Smash Bros.
Y'know, I'd be more charmed with the pencils and tape kind of bosses if they were mid-bosses you fought and then you could use them like the special moves in those other two Paper Mario games. Kinda-like older Final Fantasy summons where you fight them to "prove your worth" and then you can summon them in battle. But as end of chapter boss fights? ...Even for me and my love of silly shenanigans, that's just dumb.
It at least looks like an improvement from what the series has been as of late, but like they're still holding the series hostage from what it should be.
Honestly, I'm going to waste so much confetti. I am absolutely going to be that guy who throws out confetti at every conceivable moment, just because I can.
@@nolasmor Well, unlike white areas, Mario can't walk over holes, so they could make gathering confetti necessary at which point it depends on how much you can acquire from hitting the environment to know if fighting will be it necessary for atleast that.

@@SunshowerHeathcliffBeliever It means I'm sick of games being self aware and crazily silly just to make you shocked they would even do that. Basically a roll of tape as a boss is perfect meme bait for this kind of crap. I'm sick of games being self aware jokes towards itself. I just would like a Paper Mario game like the first 3 games. Not a silly adventure time gimmick for a game.
Paper Mario was an rpg, with Sticker Star they wanted to remove rpg elements, making it just a shallow shell of a game with a myriad of issues. Now they’re inching slowly closer to an rpg by adding basic necessities... I’m glad but not hopeful
I hate how there seems to be this sentiment with the TTYD/64 Loyalists that Generic designs = Generic personality, everyone's complaining about how generic the partners look, but if the trailer is any indication, these characters will be brimming with personality.
Nostalgia goggle wearing idiots will shit all over it because it's not the eaxt same The Thousand Year Door because those kinds of people always have an allergic reaction to something being different.
@@trenth.7053 From Nintendo UK site: During your quest to push back Olly's forces, you’ll cross paths with some quirky characters! remember when the first major boss of the game was a cool, giant papercraft _dragon?_ I like the design of the rubber band golem, but the other two are about as uninspired as you can get.
@@chick-fil-achickensandwich5403 There are origami bosses and "thing" bosses. the origami bosses are mid-bosses which Olivia gains the ability to transform into once they are beaten. the "Thing" bosses are area bosses.
I've been calling my thoughts about this game "cautiously pessimistic". There are things that look promising and things that look worrying. I'm going in with an open mind, but low expectations. Gonna wait for reviews before buying
Based on this trailer I think I’m gonna love this game in the same way I love Super Paper Mario. A different game than I’d ideally want, but a fun time to be had regardless.
Some thoughts: -The game overall looks like a middle ground between classic Paper Mario and Sticker Star/Color Splash. So they aren’t all the way there to greatness but it’s a good start. Nintendo seems to be learning. -My guess is the partners work as summons in battle. Like instead of Mario attacking he can call a party member to do the attack that turn. -Coins instead of XP is potentially salvageable depending on what you can spend coins on. Note that a lot of RPGs like Dark Souls mix XP and currency into a single thing. We know Mario’s health increases throughout the game. Maybe you need to use money to upgrade Mario, and battles could be the most profitable way to make more money even if you use up some weapon durability during battle. -Personally I think the “thing” bosses are a fun idea, especially since we’ve seen other bosses are in the game too. And I’m more sympathetic to it because the villain of the game is the “Origami King”. So it makes sense his top minions would play with the paper or arts and crafts theme. It would be silly if they were working for Bowser or something. -Also the pathing mechanic for bosses might seem strange at first, but it’s actually necessary. The game’s normal battle system is based around grouping together large numbers of weak enemies for AoE attacks. So bosses that are 1 v 1 fights need something different. -Some other videos and screenshots show that the Origami partner can transform into a giant turtle monster, so maybe she can do some powerful summon moves. -Apparently Bobby has amnesia. That explains why he initially just identified himself as “Bob-omb”, and it implies that we might get some interesting character development for him.
The "Partners as summons" Idea is also was I initially thought, but looking at bobby's attack, it wouldn't make much sense to have it use up Mario's turn. When Bobby attacks in the trailer, he hits one enemy for damage that Mario could have done with a regular attack, so doing that instead of using Mario's turn wouldn't make much sense. Maybe it's a thing where you can call on your partner once per battle, just to add a little bit of damage. I agree that the "Thing" Bosses are a fun idea, as long as: 1. They are creative in their attacks (Like using colored pencils as missiles, or maybe in the tape boss we see the roll of tape leave the dispenser as a final form) 2. They have personality, like you see them trying to thwart Mario as he gets to the boss, like how in one shot we see Mario getting attacked by some colored pencils. Maybe in the region with the tape boss, we see regions blocked off by tape. I also agree that coins could be used as a replacement for XP as long as: 1. There are useful things to spend coins on, like health upgrades or time extensions 2. Battles are the best way to get coins (Looking at you RoShamBo temples)
@@03bgood Well, I think there's a good way to do a "thing" boss and a bad thing. The rubber band man is a "thing" boss, but there is something to his design. He's kind of creepy, the loose rubber bands on his head act as hair almost, and he generally looks like an actual character rather than the thing he represents. But the tape is literally just a roll of tape. Aside from possibly having dialogue, it doesn't feel like a character at all, not even a design. For SMRPG, sure there were bosses like the sword, but even he had eyes and they cleverly used the guard of the sword to look like arms. And even if you think the design is a little uninspired, there are literally dozens of bosses in that game that have a far more interesting design. A roll of tape is literally just a roll of tape, I am having difficulty even calling it a design. The creative ones seem to be the ones who designed the encounter itself, as they had to find ways to allow a roll of tape to attack someone. To be fair, we haven't seen the game in its entirety, but I can't help but feel skeptical since Nintendo decided these were the best bosses to show off the game with. Maybe they are just the first three bosses, but...the first few major bosses of Paper Mario (N64) were the Koopa bros, Tutenkoopa and Tubba Blubba, all very different characters with varied designs. The first 3 of TTYD were Hooktail (whom I've always thought used the Paper aesthetic well without looking out of place), Magnus Von Grapple and Macho Grubba. I don't know, I suppose I simply prefer this style of boss to a roll of tape and a case of color pencils. Like Arlo said, could they not have a guy that uses colored pencils in his attacks? I don't know...
Here's an idea that hit me recently, coins could effectively be EXP. Games like dark souls had it to where you collected currency and then used it to "buy" a level. I mostly suspect this looking at Mario's health. We see it vary weildly through the trailers, and in enough small intervals I suspect it dousent come set milestones in the game. The possibility of buying health upgrades might mean getting a coins is rather significant.
I like the way you think but it looks like you’ll be able to get coins from many different sources in this game unlike Dark Souls which was only from combat or certain rare-ish items. DS also had many stats that dramatically changed the combat gameplay and thus forced you to make increasingly difficult and intentional decisions. This made the game much more variable and interesting. If coins in the new Paper Mario have scarcity, the balancing was tightly controlled, and its economy made you make decisions that dramatically change your gameplay, this could be interesting. But the signs and history point to Nintendo wanting to make a spin (no pun) on a shallow idea and continue to make it more accessible, rather than deepen story, challenge, gameplay, and memorable characters.
@@chloro8306Are there that many accessories? The Hp increases so many times that you would need like 25 or 30, depending on how much hp increases per accessory, maybe 5 or 10.

Ah yes. I remember when my teacher threw pencil missiles at the students. I'm sort of joking, one of my teachers actually did once throw a pencil at a classmate because he was talking while she was teaching. It was hilarious.
It seems like there is no form of exp in this game and a reward for battling is coins. Notice how I said "a reward" instead of "the award". It seems like enemies drop confetti as well. Confetti has a very good use in the game but deplets fastly. Opponents being defeated also seems to be the only way to obtain confetti. If you ask me that seems like a good incentive to battle. In all the gameplay shown I believe Mario doesn't go above 20k coins. This shows it's likely items a very expensive. This could slso be another reason to battle.
First off, we haven’t seen the full ending sequence of battles. A very brief short of it. But it shows four lines, so it’s probably going to mean more rewards.
@@Pokemen396 based on some extra gameplay, (you can find the gameplay at Gamexplain) you can do stuff like fill in holes which will lead you to goodies. It feels like they're so close towards what we want but they still refuse. Like they're reluctant to take that final step into Paper Mario finally being an amazing franchise.
Have you considered that not everyone wants them to make a thousand year door again and again and that seeing new mechanics and new gameplay could also make paper Mario an amazing franchise.
William Richards but not everyone wants this style of game. They don’t need to make TTYD again and again but you could use that same logic saying they shouldn’t make a sticker star inspired game again and again

Basically the only difference in battle is that you can't run away. Other then that, I'd say it's a really good rpg
@Big Butter Building the deep, engaging combat system of the originals has been almost completely replaced, so fans of that original formula feel betrayed because they have nothing to return to. it's like if the next 3d mario game didn't even focus on good platforming. fans would be angry because they go to the 3d mario games for the complexity of the platforming, so if that was changed, it'd be like their favorite series was being killed off in spite of them.
@Big Butter Building and I don't know what makes it OK to act all indignant about it either. arlo has explained this many times before when talking about paper mario, but for some reason sticker star fanboys never seem to listen.
3:56 I love how they call them “A Colourful Cast of Characters!” when in total they only include like half of the basic colour spectrum colours and all except Bobby use Yellow as a major part of their design.
Tbh, I don't think they need to go back to TTYD. I think Nintendo is trying now to mix the past formula with original stuff, which is cool for me. It doesn't need to have HP, BP, FP AND SP to be a Paper Mario game. For me, this series core is the creativity. Of course, I'm very disappointed to see the RPG elements being taken away. But as long as these games try to be RPGs, I am fine
@@mrjohnful The only "original" idea that's worked so for me at all is Super Paper Mario and that's literally basic Mario but with RPG mechanics. Sticker Star and Color Splash fundamentally doesn't understand Mario worldbuilding established by previous games or how RPG mechanics work, there isn't a proper reward system, and the lack of partners and interesting bosses makes for a very monotonous experience. TTYD would be way better than trying to inch closer to it while copying sticker star. Like I've been fine with gimmick games for a long time, I'm one of those guys who likes pretty much all the Kingdom Hearts spinoffs because they actually know how to make good games or at least consistent game design. This team has no idea how to make an RPG and unless we get something solid I'm likely to skip Oragami King based on what we've seen so far. The combat looks like a decent puzzle minigame but if that's literally the only selling point, why am I not playing something like Bug Fables or Rabbids Kingdom that does it better?
They still heavily hinted at them, enough that it was easy to make an argument for them. I saw the menu, didn’t seem like there was any levels are stats to increase by leveling.
I hope so. Coins could also be a decent replacement for EXP if they're used to purchase HP, stat upgrades, accessories, etc. BUT that would need to be carefully balanced, to the point that it feels like a challenge/struggle to get enough coins to purchase all the upgrades per area. Otherwise, if the game just throws coins at you or doesn't give you anything significant to spend them on, the battles and the entire game will feel pointless and tedious. Visually, the game looks fantastic overall but if they screw up the battling/progression system, it won't be a good game.
@@davetheimpaler204 I feel like the confettis are gonna be what you get from battles, I mean what is the easiest way to get confettis ? *By tearing paper to shreds that is.*
Yeah but they easily could've used a boss that uses a wip out of tape or a boss that uses colored pencils for spears or something. This is just shear laziness and uninspired design. This also is why I don't like what they're doing with paper Mario. It's making arts and crafts villains, which puts Nintendo in a bad light with the people that enjoy arts and crafts. Paper Mario was much more fun at 1000 Year Door and even the first one just called Paper Mario. The last good one was Paper Jam. I never used the stamp feature, however arguably it better fit the aesthetic than fighting a tape and dispenser or colored pencils with their carrying case.
@@Openreality Paper Jam is usually seen as a Mario & Luigi game rather than a Paper Mario game. You almost never hear Arlo talk about it when talking Paper Mario, for example. I stopped watching GameXplain a long time ago because of how sick I got of that behavior. Which is sad, because I used to really like them. But every new video I watched, they felt more and more like shills. And I don't mean they weren't being loud and obnoxious (because it is good to be respectful and diplomatic). I mean it felt like they would refuse to accept any negatives about the games they were talking about, and even going after fans instead. Once they started dismissing fans and generalizing their discontent as "entitlement", I finally had enough. Sounds like it hasn't gotten any better?
Unless I'm mistaken, Bobby and Professor Toad's Japanese names are just the Japanese words for "Bob-omb" and "Toad", so I think this was a localization move to appease fans worrying about the lack of original characters. That also explains "Bobby"'s standard enemy design. Bit of a bummer to me. This just doesn't feel like a world that I'll be able to get fully invested in. :(
How the hell does any one get invested in these new Paper Mario games anyways? The mix media art style and the overreliance on things makes the world an incoherent mess. Add the huge emphasis on meta humor and they're basically designed to not be invested or immersed in.
I mean, to be honest, I'm still hoping from the bottom of my heart that if there's not an exp system, AT LEAST there's an upgrade system to up your attack, HP, defence and possibly to unlock items to buy/get to use in battle. It can still be saved even without an exp system, but I don't wanna have expectations towards the game so I'm set up to be dissapointed. Oh, and while I HATE the Thing bosses, there's still hope. The Rubber Band Mummy guy seems super cool and interesting, there's still a boss battle we didn't see fully with Mario driving a giant water or ice dragon thing and we saw Gooper Blooper at one point. I still have hope those are just... A bump in the road.
Use coins to upgrade a shop to sell better items, coins to buy overalls and hats of different arts & crafts products, coins to learn how to jump better or swing harder, coins coins coins.
Kinda like the Generation 1 pokemon where they power up their Special (special attack and special defense) and forget things and then sweep and tank things.
No EXP gained from the looks of that one battle that shows the end-of-battle results screen. The fact that the trailer cut away from it incredibly fast gives me a lot to be concerned about.

@@davetheimpaler204 Correct! It's why EXP is the easy way out. Using currency alone is a much more delicate balance than simply slapping a leveling system and balancing the game around it.
I think they'll balance it well, *but* I saw mario getting 1000 coins from a block as a reward for a puzzle, and it looks like only 200-300 coins for a battle. That rate seems good, if the high coin blocks are rare, but if they're not, I'm doubtful.
I just find it funny/awkward that they stopped making tradicional Paper Mario games because they didn't want to "keep doing the same" but now they are literally making the same game over and over again repeating it's flaws along the way.
Speaking as someone who’ll be entering the series with this game it looks pretty fun and interesting. But I did follow the response to the last two games so I do understand the concerns.
Its like they said: Remember in older paper mario games, we had "things"? Yeah, why? Remember how people hated them? Yes, but why are we talking about them? Well, if they hated them so much, they would love to beat the crap out of them, so I thought to make them bosses! That's…A TERRIFIC IDEA!!!
Yeah, I’ve only played a bit of Super Paper Mario (fun) and Sticker Star (not very fun) and I’m not a huge RPG fan but I’d like to check out the other PMs. Looking at just the public perception of this whole series and as someone who may or may not check this game out, a game in the tradition of the first two would be neat, but it seems there’s been an upward trend since SS and I think this Paper Mario is its own beast now. I respect the criticisms but I think certain precious things like more unique character designs could be let go of, I’m honestly not sure though.
@crazy silly You can throw around all the buzzwords you want, Sticker Star and Color Splash are still fundamentally flawed games in how they approach combat.
That's what I figure might happen, like you buy equips that raise your level manually, like what happened in kingdom hearts 358/2. Not a great idea though honestly.
realpichu 1 yeah, but that is the problem. They are taking it to its extreme. Especially with the bosses in this game. Why are we fighting Tape, Rubber-bands and a box of Colored pencils when we can be fighting actual characters that use those things instead of them just being living objects.
I think arlo covered that in a previous video. The lead developer lady or whoever she was said that paper mario no longer needed rpg stuff since mario and Luigi bro games had it. Sounded stupid then and looks stupid now
I'm a whole lot less skeptical than I was back when they first revealed this and while I probably might just buy and enjoy this one, i'm really glad bug fables came out when it did because this game alone would've been heartbreaking.
Then why in the Japanese Trailers he is still refereed to as Bo-bomb? It's pretty obvious they are hiding the fact that they never intended to have real partners.
This is probably the least creative way to take the pencil crayon idea. Imagine a boss made out of melted crayons. Or a child's drawing made with pencil crayons that comes to life. Missed opportunities.
Honestly it's the most disappointing thing in the game so far. It suggests just how creatively bankrupt some parts of the game are. Very unusual for Nintendo to do something so incredibly bland.
I think youre taking this in a non creative way, the whole plot of this game is origami vs paper, and those "things" aka pencils, rubber bands and tape are all used.. on paper? Crayons to draw, rubber bands to roll them up and tape to glue them together, making these guard the streamers make so much sense vs a random character loosely based on those things
omar janabi You know, just because it fits the theme, doesn't make it less lazy or uninspired. With this theme, they could put a blank piece of paper as a boss. Note how the rubber band boss is made of many rubber bands, taking a form? By your stance, it could have just been a single rubber band, with nothing unique about it.
I've recently been playing The Thousand Year Door for the first time (Illegally? No, of course not, where would get that idea, I would never), and as I've gone and played through it, I began to understand certain complaints about the later games. The main problem I see is indeed the battling system. The system of getting coins from battle to then buy card to battle with, like Arlo explained, is just plain dumb. I really enjoy the system Thousand Year Door has of gaining XP, and getting to upgrade Mario's abilities by doing battle, not just getting coins. (I'm actually always dead broke in the game, but that's besides the point) If this new game can find a way to make battling unique and worthwhile, then I think the series can finally be at a place where most people can enjoy it. (Except Arlo until partners come back 😂)
The problem is they're going out of their way to not use exp and levels and whatnot even though those have proven for decades to be a super fun way to feel like you're making progress and reward you for fighting. I really wish I could talk to the devs and understand why they're going at it this way.
Confetti is gained from battling, The coins seem to be the way to progress through the game, Mario is shown in different screenshot with more max HP and dealing more damage. The fear mainly comes because people think the fighting is like SS/CS but in reality, it's closer to TTYD (The attacking part, not the turning part). Partners are back, the reason the narrator says that some partners can battle is so people don't think that Folded Bowser would be battling (watch me get debunked as soon as I say that) another fear is that the partners are temporary, which is confirmed by the website, but Bobby can be seen in later parts of the game. also, the UK Nintendo shop page for Paper Mario The Origami King states that while Mario cutting streamers/ defeating enemies, Luigi will be looking for keys to The Castle, the way they worded it makes it seem that there will be intermissions with Luigi. Also there aren't only real-life objects as bosses, there is Gooper Blooper, Origami Peach is probably a boss and King Olly is probably the final boss, and Bowser is a powerless ally. Sounds familiar? *Possesed Peach (TTYD) *Final Boss not being Bowser (TTYD/SPM) *Intermissions _maybe_ (TTYD) *Bowser being an ally (SPM)
Faisal Alsubaihen where in the whole wide world is temporary partners listed on the website? Cause I just looked and there’s nothing even listed about party members. Also what’s bad with area exclusive party members? Kingdom hearts does it.
This trailer confirmed that I'm not missing out on anything by skipping this one. The bosses are the biggest kick in the teeth. What an awful decision.
Dude are you seriously so clouded by rose tinted nostalgia that you can’t even give a game a chance before completely writing it off? (Sorry if I sound abrasive but I’m sick of people who write games off without giving them a chance.)
Cosmoniums Comet I think its perfectly fair to be totally turned off and disappointed by this trailer. People who loved the originals have been totally left to wayside with these new games. The soul of the games has vanished and its become all about stupid paper gimmicks instead of a series of games with characters you can grow attached to. Like Arlo said, this game feels like a bunch of half measures to fix things, and its just not what we want. And the thing final bosses is like a kick in the teeth. What an awful decision and really shows how disconnected they are from fans of the old games.
Cosmoniums Comet And I’m really sick of Nintendo refusing to acknowledge that the first two games exist. This is more a sequel to Color Splash than any other game. Respect your series, Nintendo. Don’t make “sequels” that abandon the prequels in the dust forever.
@@parkerdinhwilliams15 Writing off this game as "Just stupid paper gimmicks" without even giving it a smidgen of a chance to do anything creative with them is abandoning the franchise that you loved. Everything that turned you and many others off this game ("Thing" bosses, and the paper theme) all of those can be done correctly, they just haven't in the past. The paper theme was used as a replacement for a story and the things served as a way to make boss fights uninteresting. But this time is different, the paper theme isn't the story this time around, replace 'folded' with 'brainwashed', and 'ribbons' with 'chains' and the story hardly changes, the same goes for the 'thing' bosses, if you look closely, you see Mario being attacked by the colored pencils in other parts of the chapter, if the bosses are a menacing force and try to impede your progress throughout the chapter then that would be an idea even the originals didn't even do. These characters even have the chance to be even better than TTYD personality-wise, I never grew extremely fond of any partner in TTYD because of the fact that most of them stop being characters once they joined you. Once the partners became part of your party, outside of some chapter-specific dialogue with Gombella, Koops, and Flurrie, they stop being interesting personality-wise, they just stop having dialogue once you're done with their chapter (Outside of some stock story-related lines that all basically say the same thing). Because TTYD allows you to have any partner out at any time, that basically makes it impossible for there to be character-specific story-related dialogue, thus making their character not really have any meaning past their chapter. This is why I like how this game is going to have section-specific partners, it gives us more opportunities to get to know them better. In TTYD, it feels like they were interesting when I first met them, but then they quickly took a backseat to other partners/characters. (Goombella and Vivian are the two exceptions to this, Goombella because she has tattle and her out-of-battle ability, and Vivian because we get to know her far before she joins us) It's a situation where less is more, having less characters means the ones we do have are more interesting and more developed, I don't know about you, but I would much rather get to know 1/2 characters at a time, while having them interact with each other, over 6 characters, each for only a small segment, and the only interaction they have is with the main character that doesn't speak. (I've played all the Paper Mario games, and 64 is one of my favorite games, the reason I don't bring 64 up in this is because TTYD as far better partners character-wise, everything I've said about TTYD applies to all of 64's partners)
Honestly I didn’t buy it until this new trailer suddenly randomly had Gooper Blooper from Sunshine. Petey Piranha has been a fan-favorite for years, but as far as I know, Gooper hasn’t really been in anything past Sunshine. For that reason alone, I think it’s happening. He’s just such a random character to slip into this trailer for seemingly no reason.
@CraftyMineDan I’m not so sure about that since in Color Splash, your max HP would rise drastically after every boss, sometimes even up by 50. In Origami King, it looks like HP goes up by intervals of 5. So unless there’s a ton amount of bosses in every world, that doesn’t seem like the case
Toad Howard In Sticker Star there were these heart items in the game that would give you +5 HP if you found them. You would be able to max out at 100 HP if you collected them all.
Awwwww yeeeeaaahhhhh! I’m super excited that partners are back! I’m a little disappointed that they mostly look like generic characters, but at least they do actually have unique personalities! A freaking anime protagonist amnesiac bob-omb named Bobby??
Spin combat seems gimmicky. When I saw that in trailer 1 I was like “ah cool, special scenario!” But nope, that’s the entire game. Tbh I don’t hate this game, but I still have no desire to actually buy it. There are a bunch of great indie games that capture the magic of the originals by telling interesting stories. $60 is a lot and “it’s a slight improvement is not enough.”
This is pretty much exactly what I thought. I'm glad they showed if off now rather than closer to release so I didn't have to spend months being hyped.
@@cosmoniums5990 I don't think it's comparable to Fossil Fighters, that game uses positioning of your team in battle well. This is more like solving a puzzle to maximize your damage.
This game sure is different, and i respect everybody that likes this kind of new approach... But for someone like me (that perhaps it's true that i am clinging to the past because it was just too good).. well for me.. this looks like i won't be enjoying this game as much as i wish i would.
I still say give the game a fair shot. It does looklike their at leadt trying to put more effort into things this time around. For all we know someone higher up is causing problems for the staff behind the game. You know the type of execs who don’t actually make movies or games but think they know better snyway.
Is it truly wrong to long for a past that was Golden? I hate that argument that you're living in the past, what does that even mean? So let's say the next Paper Mario game right after this becomes a first person shooter? Are the Color Splash and Origami King fans living in the past if they complain about that? Living in the past is a cop out argument when someone doesnt want to prove you wrong. The only criteria for you "living in the past" is if the thing you love happened yesterday. And everything that's ever been made has existed in the past so what's the difference between you and Color Splash fans? You both like something that happened in the past and it existed before the present? Stupid argument. And anyone that uses it is stupid for saying it.
Well paper Mario come out three years before I was born, I get it for free via club Nintendo, I haven't finished it yet but I love it, it's the only one I've played but still... Even though it's the only one I played I not apposed to games like SPM or of course origami king I'm quite excited for it's release of course there's some things like character design, diversity of inhabitants and More New characters I do think it makes up for some of the things I mentioned but I'm not going over why
I’ve only watched Paper Mario and Paper Mario TTYD, I think those games look so good and I had my expectations of them doing something similar for the younger generation like me. Give them an experience that other older players enjoyed. But idk. I’m being very optimistic about the game and I hope things go well for you guys and the older generation.
Nintendo fans: "Back to Thousand Year Door formula?" Nintendo: "turnable battlefields! :)" Nintendo fans: "No, we want Thousand Year Door formula" Nintendo: "Turnable :) battle :) fields :)"
I honestly don't mind the turnable battlefield. Its fine if they want an interesting mechanic for the battles, but there some other elements I'd like to see come back. Proper partners for one. They could have done something creative and strategic with it, maybe give the partners their own circle turns on their own turn. Maybe each partner turns the field slightly differently than the others. Give it some strategic depth and we get partners back. idk why they didn't do something like this.
Yeah I actually like this battle system Although the fact there's no exp worries me because it's the same fatal flaw Sticker Star and Color Splash had.
I still don't know how should I feel about this game. The combat system could be fun if it's well balanced, but if the last 2 times it wasn't well balanced I don't have any reason to trust that it will be fixed this time.
The primary theme of this video is “I have major trust issues with Nintendo” or “I am cautiously very very cautiously so cautiously optimistic.” And I played the originals. I never played Color Splash or Sticker Star because they just didn’t look like very good games, so maybe I haven’t had this massive emotional experience, but I generally avoid mediocre games. I’m still in “wait and see” mode with this one, but it looks like a step up from those games.

All this time, the Paper Mario series has just been a prequel to Microsoft Office; and the true villain behind it all, Clippy.
Well, Microsoft and Nintendo are being Buddy, Buddy these days...
You mean Clippit?
That'd actually be a smart boss idea and a really smart promotion that wouln't be there just for the sake of. On the other hand, MS dropped clippy a long ago anbd I don't think they want to hear of him ever again
Bonzai Buddy is an interference. He works for himself and also wants to kill Mario.
That would be so coooooooool
Is NO ONE else going to talk about the fact that there's a game show and its called "Shy Guys finish last"? That's clearly the best part.
Lmao, seems like the writing’s still great.
They took Snifit or Whifit from us. Justice for Whifit!!!!
the gameshow segments are always highlights in Paper Mario so hopefully this one will not dissapoint.
Hard to talk about that when there's so much else to talk about, both in the trailer and also outside of it. It WAS a "'blink and you'll miss it" moment within the trailer, just like the fire bird and water dragon.
I think it was a round of the game show, and that the Shy Guys finished last.
The reason Bobby refers to himself as Bob-Omb is that he lost his memory, and thus, he thinks he’s a regular Bob-Omb, which, in a way, is kinda meta
Kinda wish he was just named "Bob-omb?" till he got his memory back and we actually discovered his name
Its a bit less meta and more 4th wall breaking
I think that's a good way to look at it maria!
He also used the phrase "thinky thinky panic" as a reference to doki doki panic where bobombs first appeared. GameXplain showed me that.
what if bobby is the son of Bobbery from ttyd and due to the memory loss thing he forgot about it. and he might be separated from his father so he is on the quest to find him.
"the players fall in love with the characters, the settings, basically what makes the rpg genre so amazing imo"
Ya know... that's a good point honestly. There's not even Toadette (she was in Thousand Year Door)
But your comment is interesting. I can agree that they're all very similar with *some* differences to set each one apart gameplay wise, but the characters, stories, and settings are what really shine.
I always consider paper mario to be more unique compared to other rpgs. So for they to change an already unique rpg series just didn't make sense to me.
You're not wrong!
Speaking of Xenoblade I’m getting worried Arlo is going to skip it when it has pretty much everything he begs for in a Nintendo game
Interesting comment. Never really thought of Nintendo trying to take this series and constantly try to change it up. Especially how the first two games were so similar.

DatVocals! Well miyamoto isn’t the one directly responsible it’s Tanabe
Would that make Paper Mario 'Nintendo can't stick to a single formula for a Paper Mario Trilogy'
In a "Valve can't count to 3" way?
Some thoughts:
-The game overall looks like a middle ground between classic Paper Mario and Sticker Star/Color Splash.
Remember, SMRPG had weapons as bosses and everyone was fine with that.
Yah but origami king just leans on the paper aesthetic to carry it instead of having actual cool and clever bosses
I agree that the "Thing" Bosses are a fun idea, as long as:
1. They are creative in their attacks (Like using colored pencils as missiles, or maybe in the tape boss we see the roll of tape leave the dispenser as a final form)
2. They have personality, like you see them trying to thwart Mario as he gets to the boss, like how in one shot we see Mario getting attacked by some colored pencils. Maybe in the region with the tape boss, we see regions blocked off by tape.
I also agree that coins could be used as a replacement for XP as long as:
1. There are useful things to spend coins on, like health upgrades or time extensions
2. Battles are the best way to get coins (Looking at you RoShamBo temples)
I think that the summons are going to be extra attacks added on to Mario after you gain their friendship
Okay, I could live with using coins to buy upgrades fof Mario. More time to turn, higher HP, improving attacks.
The varied HP is due to the HP plus accessories.
@@chloro8306Are there that many accessories? The Hp increases so many times that you would need like 25 or 30, depending on how much hp increases per accessory, maybe 5 or 10.
NOLASMOR ANDORESU in some screenshots from the UK Nintendo there is only like 3 “badges” of HP plus and they range from small amount to most likely Large. They go from small on top of the “badge” or “accessories” then so on with the other 2 Hp Plus. It’s in game explain RUclips.

Ah yes. I remember when my teacher threw pencil missiles at the students. I'm sort of joking, one of my teachers actually did once throw a pencil at a classmate because he was talking while she was teaching. It was hilarious.
Im still cautiously optimistic, but the “reason to battle” thing is a little more worrying
I'm pretty sure you get confetti from defeating enemies.
@@paperluigidrivinthecar5070 yea but cant really say confetti is a good reason to bother until we know what it does like filling the holes
(Ex: Filling in a platform allowing Mario to get a ? Block)
Of course some holes will just exist to be filled in with confetti just for the sake of being filled.
I really am excited for this, it’s more in line with Color Splash than like TTYD but the battle system seems so cool.

The South Park games have Paper Mario battle mechanics?!? I’m not too familiar with them, how so?
@@julesthief they have different allies with different abilities, pp (which is basically flower points), you get exp from battle and level up to get stronger, and you've got all the other stuff like items, a variety of weapons, turn-based battle system, and a bunch of different enemies to fight and side-quests to do.

I'm sick of baby-steps man. Arlo is the only one who tells it like it is.
Yeah sooner or later they have to go back on the original form and improve upon it.
Maybe we like Nintendo, just need to let go of the past.

@@SchmergDergen well they did cut quite abruptly in the clip but idk, I honestly don't really care about xp anyway so I'm not getting any hopes up

You know something is fundamentally wrong with an RPG series when the fans have to be thankful that THE ENEMIES DISPLAY DAMAGE WITH NUMBERS.

Dave The Impaler agreed. Hope your write about coins, but I think they’re just gonna be for expendable weapons. They kind of brought badges back at least.
I agree Arlo is not afraid to point constructive criticisms about games rather than cover up and shush. I like TTYD too but I'm very open to Origami king however the last few trailers have me nervous.
@@davetheimpaler204 They'd have to be so particular about the coins if they did it that way. It'd be WAAAAAY to easy to take advantage of that system and just grab coins from all over without having to step foot into battle.
So it's like the reverse of how Kamek is just the Japanese word for Magikoopa?
That’s the impression I got. Those name tags feel like edited in and are simple text changes.
How the hell does any one get invested in these new Paper Mario games anyways? The mix media art style and the overreliance on things makes the world an incoherent mess. Add the huge emphasis on meta humor and they're basically designed to not be invested or immersed in.
I'm pretty sure that not right at all. Source?

I saw mario getting 1000 coins from a block as a reward for a puzzle, and it looks like only 200-300 coins for a battle. That rate seems good, if the high coin blocks are rare, but if they're not, I'm doubtful.

Petey Piranha has been a fan-favorite for years, but as far as I know, Gooper hasn’t really been in anything past Sunshine. For that reason alone, I think it’s happening. He’s just such a random character to slip into this trailer for seemingly no reason.
@@williamr7416 that isn't evidence wtf lmao
I think all the footage makes it seem like the battle timer is just how long you have to adjust the ring. After that, it's just a normal RPG battle.
How is there not going to be levels if Mario’s hp goes up throughout the game? If there aren’t levels, maybe you can buy stat boosts?
In color splash you would receive more hp after beating a boss, so I would assume that will be the case in origami king.
@CraftyMineDan
I’m not so sure about that since in Color Splash, your max HP would rise drastically after every boss, sometimes even up by 50.
In Origami King, it looks like HP goes up by intervals of 5. So unless there’s a ton amount of bosses in every world, that doesn’t seem like the case
The SS hearts are back
Toad Howard In Sticker Star there were these heart items in the game that would give you +5 HP if you found them. You would be able to max out at 100 HP if you collected them all.
IDK? Badges?
I have no main issues with the spin mechanics. (Then again I absolutely love fossil fighters champions which have that as a major feature.
This is pretty much exactly what I thought. I'm glad they showed if off now rather than closer to release so I didn't have to spend months being hyped.
The time limit bugs me, because then each random encounter is like a minigame THEN a battle. It seems too much.
@@cosmoniums5990 I don't think it's comparable to Fossil Fighters, that game uses positioning of your team in battle well. This is more like solving a puzzle to maximize your damage.
“Yknow what I mean”
Me: yes and no simultaneously
We've basically just become the older generation of ..."back in my day, things were better" only with Paper Mario.
what's crazy is that it's true but the kids will probably just think we're old, smh
It's not blind nostalgia if you can go back and actually point out what was done right.
Adam Feliciano nah. Y’all old XD
Nintendo fans: "Back to Thousand Year Door formula?"
Nintendo: "turnable battlefields! :)"
Nintendo fans: "No, we want Thousand Year Door formula"
Nintendo: "Turnable :) battle :) fields :)"
Nintendo isn’t gonna go back to an old formula without spicing it up a ton.
@WhinyDogFish you're probably young
WhinyDogFish Color splash was bad.
Yeah I actually like this battle system
Although the fact there's no exp worries me because it's the same fatal flaw Sticker Star and Color Splash had.
I’m just going to wait on reviews
I officially give up on Paper Mario, at least we have Bug Fables
See ya
I still don't know how should I feel about this game. The combat system could be fun if it's well balanced, but if the last 2 times it wasn't well balanced I don't have any reason to trust that it will be fixed this time.
Our expectations for this series are so low at this point that anything that isn't complete shit is seen as a step in the right direction.
4:14 nice pun there arlo
"No exp"
Here goes my expectations for the game
More like hadn’t been confirmed
