Spider-man 2 despite all its flaws I feel tackels spider-mans addiction very well and shines a light on addiction itself. I just wish it was longer and felt less rushed at points.

when i was playing through the campaign of spider-man 2, peter actually started scaring me slightly at certain points, just in the way he spoke.
so basically insomniac's writing is actual PEAK.

I don't think Harry gave the symbiote willingly. It seems that it chose to leave Harry in favor of a stronger host.
Even early on, it shows interest in Peter almost as soon as it recognizes his power.
It makes me wonder if Harry would've given it up to save his friend at all, knowing that it'd essentially be trading his life for his friend's.

to be fair. venom views peter as the perfect host for his needs in almost every game, movie, and series. Eddie is usually the one that ends up being the back up fallback, and harry in this game is still just as much a secondary fix for even Venom. Venom is just as much guilty of falling into the trappings of addiction as Peter is in the long run. Peter just happens to be able to figure out that he sees the old addiction and somewhat choose to fight it back and stop it from re-consuming his life again like that. Venom can't most of the time.

So, I haven't played Insomniac's Spiderman. I don't know where Harry's story goes. I do think it's interesting to see how the Symbiote is treated differently between him & Peter in this though. Because it is almost like real medicine. Harry needs the symbiote in order to live, but it doesn't seem to do much. There's a single scene where it does something big, but not on the scale Peter does with it. For Harry it just allows him to manage his symptoms. I think taking this into the addiction metaphor leads to some interesting implications.
Relying on medication is not the same as addiction.
Not an implication. Just a fact. People who rely on medications are not addicted to them. Yes, that includes people with chronic pain who take pain meds. Just as much as it includes people with high blood pressure who take meds to lower it.
But Harry... he uses the symbiote to live. It is a medical treatment. Unlike Peter. It's not maladaptive. We have seen this with the symbiote before - with Flash Thompson. The Veteran bonded with Venom and it gave him prosthetic legs after he lost his own in war. Harry using it to cope with his disability and make it more manageable is in line with that. It also makes it similar to many real-world medications which can also be addictive when they are not taken as prescribed.
I don't have a good way to conclude this. Just to say that addiction is complicated and that everyone is deserving of respect. "Drug seeking behavior" is not a reason to ignore someone's pain - often they ask for drugs that treat pain because they're in pain. Peter's actions in the video, calling Harry a "pill popper" when he was taking medications to treat his condition were obviously presented as a bad thing - it's the symbiote making him a shitty person and a bad friend.

I feel like this game was a real awakening for those who played it whilst having an addiction. It really drives home the what when why where and how of addiction whilst not using any real life examples, so rather than giving you a specific addiction and possibly alienating other groups with different addictions, it gives a general overview of addiction as a whole, everything that comes with it, and how to escape it!
And your video did all of that without me having to both buy and play through the game, so props to you man, amazing work!
